It's amazing how far Microsoft has come with their Surface line; their devices are really the Macs of Windows in terms of design & build quality. For their prices, the Surface is definitely the better buy, lack of USBC is the only glaring downside. The only reason to go for the Air is MacOS and the battery life. I've been thinking of switching to MacOS for a while, but Apple's not making it easy selling expensive products with mediocre specs, while Windows laptops have really improved the past few years.
I'd really recommend you stick with Windows if you're already use to it and aren't actively disappointed by it in some capacity. There's just so many more options in hardware, and you just get so much more bang for your buck. I say this as a current owner of a MacBook, and someone who loves macOS. As much as I love the platform though the hardware really does feel a bit uncompetitive when you see what's available on the other side. I'll likely end up upgrading to an Air at some point anyway, but it will be in spite of the hardware, not because of it.

Specs aren't everything but they do matter, unless you're saying hardware in laptops mean nothing. There's a reason most reviews have said the Air would be fairer priced closer to $1000. Again, the main reason to pick the Air over the cheaper Surface is if you prefer MacOS to Windows.
Nikka M yes their CPU’s are usually more powerful. Just less ram. And highly optimized to the bone. My iPhone 6 Plus 2015 performs better than my Samsung s8 2017. In almost every way minus the android freedom. But for a mobile device I say iOS is more efficient by a long shot. A more much pleasurable experience since everything basically works flawlessly

for any video test you must equalize the brightness in actual brightness, not just put them both on 50%. Most have said the air display is less bright and less contrasty, interesting. Thanks.
Sadly not so fast. Compare SSD performance and you will find 200-300MBPS on the latest Surface vs 2000MBPS on the Air. And that is much more noticeable in day to day applications.

IOPS are arguably more important, but you don't mention them at all, because your understanding of what makes an SSD great is rudimentary and one dimensional at best. Apple nerfed the 2018 MacBook Air by putting the sales people in charge of design decisions and let them offer customers an inferior product for marketing reasons instead of designing the best product they could. The fanless Surface PRO 6 tablet has the same quad-core cpu as the Surface Laptop 2, so there's no reason the new air couldn't house the same quad-core cpu. Sadly the people in charge do not have the best product in mind.

Basically the same as on the Surface Laptop 2. You wont notice a difference in resolution, but you might notice a difference in quality, depending if one is higher quality than the other.
Battery will be always better in mac because of lesser screen area. But for me lesser price and the 3:2 ratio as well as i like the keyboard on surface much more than any other laptop keyboard. And macbook air has not came to draw new user to mac but to stop users from switching from mac to windows.(1200$ starting price for a laptop is ridiculous) Also i like windows ecosystem.

Looks better is very subjective, has better specs I agree I wish we could have an option to go to a quad core i7 on the air. Software ecosystem... no, better looking screen? Looks like the MacBook Air trades performance for more battery life, and the Surface Laptop vice versa. But since neither is a powerhouse, I'd pick the Air. As an added bonus, you get USB-C over the antiqued mini display port, which absolutely no one uses anymore.
Surface laptop has a very big problem in design. It cannot be opened to be serviced, so after 3 years when the battery doesn't hold charge anymore it will not be possible to just change the battery. Also if anything breaks you will not be able to fix it, macbook air is modular, so most components can be serviced. The alcantara on the surface laptop can be stained, a laptop is a high wear device so over the years it will show wear, which will make it not look very sleek and clean after a couple years. It does have higher specs but up to you if you still want the surface.
Half way through, I stopped. You're biased. Two examples. Keyboard, when referencing the better Surface keyboard, you said "like your grandfather's". Which, doesn't sound like a compliment. When referencing ports, you used no derogatory terms for the Mac, but had no problem criticizing the Surface which has more options, just no USB C. I usually let a video play out. Not this time. In a couple of years you will see that the new Surface laptops will come out with USB C. Easy win for the MacBook. Also, you can plug in an external GPU and high-resolution displays. So in 2 years, you will need to throw your surface in the trash while your MacBook is still on the table running perfectly fine.
Recently got the surface 2 after being frustrated with latest macbook air which I have now sold. Reasons : - keyboard on new macs are just not great to type with. Hate them. - Macs only have usb c ports. - Macs have no touch screen : this is such a big advantage with the surface 2. Once you have a touch screen on your laptop, you don't look back. It makes the interaction with your computer more natural and overall easier. - Windows 10 is a v good operating system. Have used Macs for over 10 years now but have to admit, my return to Windows has been a pleasant one. - Macs and all their accessories are terribly overpriced. It's becoming a joke really. I've had Surface 2 for three weeks now and don't see me returning to Macs anytime soon.
@@gingerreilly I don't know what you're studying but if it's nothing graphics or design related then you're fine with the Surface Laptop 2 otherwise Surface book is better for rendering and editing. Neither are great for gaming but light gaming is fine. If you're not in a hurry you can wait for the Surface Laptop 3, they probably would include the USB-C port for more future proof. I personally don't see the missing ports to be a deal breaker so I went and got the Surface Laptop 2.

My MacBook has the most customization possible, can change icons constantly, backgrounds, highlight colors, cursors, and so much mood. The opposite on my surface pro, I can legit change nothing and icons have a set place they go into.

Hamzah Nadeem you must have never used a MacBook. I had a 2015 MacBook and never once had any issues with it at all. I dropped it many times spilt food all over it. And still not one problem. So where’s the scam part in a laptop that worked completely perfect for 4 years and would still be perfect if it was still my main computer I used everyday
If you actually want a useful laptop which can game, get a Surface pro. If you want a cheap(lol) Mac get a MacBook Air which still uses a Y series Dual Core CPU.

Well I think it comes down to what you are using this for. Movies, Streaming and maybe some office work? The air is excellent and 11-12 hours of battery is pretty nuts. Anything more intensive, maybe you lean Surface. I don’t understand why the surface does not have a USB-C. Laptops should be future proof than that at these prices.
look at the geekbench part it's all lies. it is written "Surface Pro 6" and trust me none of them has a score of 2800 in single score performance it should be more than 4000, I have watched so many video about that

The major deal breaker for me in macbooks is the weak charger that was converted from being plugged in parallel to perpendicular. So instead of replacing the charger every 2 years, it will probably break in months....

Mac might be more expensive. But I can honestly say apple products are generally better quality. Just my experience. My apple products have been near flawless compare other products. Nothing has come close. I find the price worth it. My 2010 laptop has been going strong ever since. That’s 9 years! Try using a windows for 9 years. It will literally be unusable after some time
Have you used a Surface product to make this statement? I had to get two of my three MacBook Pro's replaced due to thermal issues. I used Apple Laptops for 6 years then swapped to Surface devices after that. Yes apple products are great quality, I honestly have got much more out of my Surface products. The build quality is the same if not better on the Surface line-up and the butterfly switches on Macs are truly horrible, there is not a better laptop keyboard on the market that can even come close to the Surface products. I have a Surface Pro and it is amazing, I am constantly being asked what my device is, how much it costs, do I recommend it. But at the end of the day you are paying more for less when purchasing a Mac as seen in this video with the spec comparison. P.S - Once you go touch screen you will never go back. (Said everyone with a touch enabled laptop)

Macbook Air makes no sense. It's slightly lighter than the 13" Macbook Pro and has the same dimensions. Macbook Pro has superior screen to the Air and the option for much better CPU.
I would love to see a surface laptop 3 with a larger trackpad, two or more type C thunderbolt and possibly a model with a GPU like a mx150 or 2050. That would be my perfect laptop
You mention the Integrated Video Card not great for gaming. I am not a gamer but would be using it for 3D CAD design whereby the best way to go is always a 'dedicated' video card. That said, would you favor the Surface Pro 6 for 3D CAD like SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor (both running on Windows 10 and Parallels for Macs)??
Both great laptops. But just a fun fact, Apple doesn’t omit touchscreens on Macs because it’s not optimized. They omit it because the idea is impractical, especially considering they sell the best tablets on the market. One huge reason I’d choose to get a laptop over a tablet is precisely because I DON’T want to touch, smudge, and dirty up the screen I’m looking at, all commands being operated through the keyboard and track pad. Are there SOME benefits to have touch abilities on a laptop screen? Sure. But definitely nowhere near enough to warrant me choosing to smear up my $1000+ laptop screen over using a tablet dedicated to that function.

Specs wise the two aren't in the same class it's only the price point that places them there and shows just how over priced the Apple is. I am Mac user but the more years that go by it's seems Microsoft is trying harder to get me as a customer.
The MacBook has a much better build quality while the Surface has this weird Alcantara. I spilt my coffee all over the table a million times and picked up my mac, cleaned it and used it. With the surface, you will stay there with coffee spots on it

I fell in love with the aesthetics of the surface laptop 2 and bought one, even though I’m a Mac user. I ended up returning it because it crashed on me twice in front of clients 😂 I know that could’ve been partially my fault but I’m not messing around anymore
I think the base model of the 2017 13.3" MacBook Pro is the Laptop 2's target, whose specs actually lie between the 2017 13.3 Pro and the 2018 13.3 Pro, way better than the duo-core latest Air. Yet, some sources suggest that Macs' read/write speeds are much faster than any Windows devices, thanks both to Samsung's supreme SSDs adopted & Apple's own software optimization.

Good review, but you complain about the ports on the Air and they are way more versatile than the ones on the SL. I dig the 3:2 aspect ratio and many things on the SL, but those ports are deal breakers for me.
6:02 wow that is one skewed graph. why would you create something so misleading? That MBA18 graph should be about 28% larger than SL2, but is approx. 63% larger. You clearly either cut off the x-axis or just made graphs that have nothing to do with reality
Surface Laptop has the best keyboard of any laptops ever, and the 3:2 monitor is pretty handy even though the 16:10 monitor on the air is not bad either. For a writer or a office worker there is only one option though, and that is the Surface laptop.

I have both. I like the Mac personally based on the OS and build quality. Not a big fan of the alcantara and the trackpad. The touch screen is nice but hard to use the pen with a laptop. Terms of value the surface laptop has the better specs for the price.

I work a lot outside at almost direct sunlight, none of them are gonna do great, but I really want to know which one has the brighter screen or if difference is unnoticeable. Im having a hard time deciding and I need to decide by tomorrow because the air is on sale for $1000. My issue is the airs screen isnt very bright and its underpowered for the price point. Meanwhile the surface laptop has no usb c or thunderbolt ports which is inconvenient and its screen isnt a widescreen so its bad for watching but good for reading.

LPDDR3. No Intel mobile chips support LPDDR4 currently. And what’s wrong with DDR3? Is it because it’s one less than DDR4? RAM speed doesn’t affect performance to a significant degree.

Ain'tMyself it isn’t they messed up the benchmark and showed surface pro 6 results instead of the surface laptop 2 results for some reason you can see it in the video. The actual single core is. Just about 4000 while multi ore is around 13500.
I have the surface laptop first generation. Battery life sucked from the get go. Now about 2 years in. I may need a new battery and the only option is to pay for a refurbished product since the battery can NOT be replaced. Had I known, I would have definitely gone with any apple products. Check our all of the issues with the software updates too. Windows 10!!!!! Every update is a cringeworthy experience. You never know what will go wrong.
It would be perfect if microsoft at least put one thunderbolt for external GPU. But microsoft likely wnot do that, since they put surface connector that implement the same speed as thunderbolt 3, they would force you to use that and charge you for surface dock.

@CDLLRBM Cheif Executive Officer Surface Pro 6 has better thermals. It doesn't tend to throttle. I don't know about the SL2.

Looks like the MacBook Air trades performance for more battery life, and the Surface Laptop vice versa. But since neither is a powerhouse, I'd pick the Air. As an added bonus, you get USB-C over the antiqued mini display port, which absolutely no one uses anymore.

Surface laptop has a very big problem in design. It cannot be opened to be serviced, so after 3 years when the battery doesn't hold charge anymore it will not be possible to just change the battery.
Also if anything breaks you will not be able to fix it, macbook air is modular, so most components can be serviced.
The alcantara on the surface laptop can be stained, a laptop is a high wear device so over the years it will show wear, which will make it not look very sleek and clean after a couple years.
It does have higher specs but up to you if you still want the surface.

Keyboard, when referencing the better Surface keyboard, you said "like your grandfather's". Which, doesn't sound like a compliment.
When referencing ports, you used no derogatory terms for the Mac, but had no problem criticizing the Surface which has more options, just no USB C.

In a couple of years you will see that the new Surface laptops will come out with USB C. Easy win for the MacBook. Also, you can plug in an external GPU and high-resolution displays. So in 2 years, you will need to throw your surface in the trash while your MacBook is still on the table running perfectly fine.

Recently got the surface 2 after being frustrated with latest macbook air which I have now sold.
Reasons :
- keyboard on new macs are just not great to type with. Hate them.
- Macs only have usb c ports.
- Macs have no touch screen : this is such a big advantage with the surface 2. Once you have a touch screen on your laptop, you don't look back. It makes the interaction with your computer more natural and overall easier.
- Windows 10 is a v good operating system. Have used Macs for over 10 years now but have to admit, my return to Windows has been a pleasant one.
- Macs and all their accessories are terribly overpriced. It's becoming a joke really.
I've had Surface 2 for three weeks now and don't see me returning to Macs anytime soon.

@@gingerreilly I don't know what you're studying but if it's nothing graphics or design related then you're fine with the Surface Laptop 2 otherwise Surface book is better for rendering and editing. Neither are great for gaming but light gaming is fine. If you're not in a hurry you can wait for the Surface Laptop 3, they probably would include the USB-C port for more future proof. I personally don't see the missing ports to be a deal breaker so I went and got the Surface Laptop 2.

My MacBook has the most customization possible, can change icons constantly, backgrounds, highlight colors, cursors, and so much mood. The opposite on my surface pro, I can legit change nothing and icons have a set place they go into.

Well I think it comes down to what you are using this for. Movies, Streaming and maybe some office work? The air is excellent and 11-12 hours of battery is pretty nuts. Anything more intensive, maybe you lean Surface. I don’t understand why the surface does not have a USB-C. Laptops should be future proof than that at these prices.

The major deal breaker for me in macbooks is the weak charger that was converted from being plugged in parallel to perpendicular. So instead of replacing the charger every 2 years, it will probably break in months....

Mac might be more expensive. But I can honestly say apple products are generally better quality. Just my experience. My apple products have been near flawless compare other products. Nothing has come close. I find the price worth it. My 2010 laptop has been going strong ever since. That’s 9 years! Try using a windows for 9 years. It will literally be unusable after some time
Have you used a Surface product to make this statement? I had to get two of my three MacBook Pro's replaced due to thermal issues. I used Apple Laptops for 6 years then swapped to Surface devices after that. Yes apple products are great quality, I honestly have got much more out of my Surface products. The build quality is the same if not better on the Surface line-up and the butterfly switches on Macs are truly horrible, there is not a better laptop keyboard on the market that can even come close to the Surface products. I have a Surface Pro and it is amazing, I am constantly being asked what my device is, how much it costs, do I recommend it. But at the end of the day you are paying more for less when purchasing a Mac as seen in this video with the spec comparison. P.S - Once you go touch screen you will never go back. (Said everyone with a touch enabled laptop)

Macbook Air makes no sense. It's slightly lighter than the 13" Macbook Pro and has the same dimensions. Macbook Pro has superior screen to the Air and the option for much better CPU.
Do both screen have the same maximum brightness in Nits? Otherwise setting to 50% while comparing is pointless...

You mention the Integrated Video Card not great for gaming. I am not a gamer but would be using it for 3D CAD design whereby the best way to go is always a 'dedicated' video card. That said, would you favor the Surface Pro 6 for 3D CAD like SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor (both running on Windows 10 and Parallels for Macs)??

Both great laptops. But just a fun fact, Apple doesn’t omit touchscreens on Macs because it’s not optimized. They omit it because the idea is impractical, especially considering they sell the best tablets on the market. One huge reason I’d choose to get a laptop over a tablet is precisely because I DON’T want to touch, smudge, and dirty up the screen I’m looking at, all commands being operated through the keyboard and track pad. Are there SOME benefits to have touch abilities on a laptop screen? Sure. But definitely nowhere near enough to warrant me choosing to smear up my $1000+ laptop screen over using a tablet dedicated to that function.

I fell in love with the aesthetics of the surface laptop 2 and bought one, even though I’m a Mac user. I ended up returning it because it crashed on me twice in front of clients 😂 I know that could’ve been partially my fault but I’m not messing around anymore

I think the base model of the 2017 13.3" MacBook Pro is the Laptop 2's target, whose specs actually lie between the 2017 13.3 Pro and the 2018 13.3 Pro, way better than the duo-core latest Air. Good review, but you complain about the ports on the Air and they are way more versatile than the ones on the SL.
I dig the 3:2 aspect ratio and many things on the SL, but those ports are deal breakers for me.
The MacBook Air has only two ports and they are both Thunderbolt 3. One of those ports is used for charging and the other has to use a dongle.
Thuderbolt has passthrough for power, so you can conect like 10 different things in each and still charge your laptop. @@robertp457

Surface Laptop has the best keyboard of any laptops ever, and the 3:2 monitor is pretty handy even though the 16:10 monitor on the air is not bad either. For a writer or a office worker there is only one option though, and that is the Surface laptop.

I have both. I like the Mac personally based on the OS and build quality. Not a big fan of the alcantara and the trackpad. The touch screen is nice but hard to use the pen with a laptop. Terms of value the surface laptop has the better specs for the price.

Im having a hard time deciding and I need to decide by tomorrow because the air is on sale for $1000. My issue is the airs screen isnt very bright and its underpowered for the price point. Meanwhile the surface laptop has no usb c or thunderbolt ports which is inconvenient and its screen isnt a widescreen so its bad for watching but good for reading.

LPDDR3. No Intel mobile chips support LPDDR4 currently. And what’s wrong with DDR3? Is it because it’s one less than DDR4? RAM speed doesn’t affect performance to a significant degree.

I have the surface laptop first generation. Battery life sucked from the get go. Now about 2 years in. I may need a new battery and the only option is to pay for a refurbished product since the battery can NOT be replaced. Had I known, I would have definitely gone with any apple products.
Check our all of the issues with the software updates too. Windows 10!!!!! Every update is a cringeworthy experience. You never know what will go wrong.
It would be perfect if microsoft at least put one thunderbolt for external GPU. But microsoft likely wnot do that, since they put surface connector that implement the same speed as thunderbolt 3, they would force you to use that and charge you for surface dock.
I would say it’s all down to personal preference. The Air is perfect for some people (including me) and the Surface is perfect for some people!
