It's incredible how much you get in the low end. The fit and finish looks great for a budget car. Compared to a used previous Gen Equinox or similar the kicks is a completely separate class.
Anecdotal evidence in coming... wife drives a 15 year old / 180,000 kms X-Trail (100+ in freedom units). It has a POS Jatco CVT which behaves similarly to this. All we've had to do is replace the fluid 5,000 kms ago. Only thing gone wrong is the driver's side door hand fell off recently. :)
Had one of these as a rental last year and to be honest I haven't been in a modern car (2012+) in a very long time. I was a little surprising how well it handled and power delivery for the everyday driving. I guess I been out of the loop experiencing newer cars and only do so when I drive other family member's cars such as their '18 toyota highlander. I daily a 2000 subaru impreza 2.5rs and a lexus gx470 so I was fairly impressed.
As an old school Nissan fan, I liked the previous gen kicks, Miles over the rouge sport, so I’m glad they are stepping it up. We need more decent affordable vehicles.
I planned to buy kicks but I ended up buying rogue sports. Why do you think its miles over rogue sport? I thought they are similar price size and power?
I know it’s a little more expensive but idk why anyone would consider the ecosport, trax, or kicks when the Honda hrv, crv, and Mazda cx3 exist. Those cars just seem way better in every way. Shit I’ll even throw the Honda Ridgeline in there. I think that “truck” is extremely underrated
I just want to thank you so much for this thorough and honest video. Car shopping has been overwhelming but this video helped me make the choice to buy a Nissan Kicks. Test drove it today and it was great!
Loved your final thoughts.. i have many family members that can barely pay there bills and your exactly right bout that aspect of pricing for some. sadly from comments on here i can tell alot don't understand not everyone makes over $60-70k a year. These low price cars are just a piece of the market for them.
If someone can barely pay their bills they should not be purchasing/leasing/financing new vehicles. That's how broke people stay broke. Leasing is the most expensive way to drive a vehicle by the way.

Thanks for doing this. I'm sure as an automotive journalist, it's more fun to review sports cars. But I usually pay more attention to a car that a normal person can afford. Too bad this one doesn't come with a regular automatic transmission.
Looking at a premium Mazda 3, and then jumping to this video really puts things into perspective. Thanks for reviewing all of these different kinds of vehicles. They're really interesting.
Sweet review. Glad I watched this one. Looks like CVTs and driving pleasure shouldn't be used in the same sentence. It's a great car for the masses and especially a student or new graduate. We all need help to start out in life and from your review, it seems this car fits the bill very well.
I definitely like fast cars of course, but these types of videos are valuable. I’d feel really good about making recommendations to friends and family off these, thanks Goose!
This just popped into my suggested list. Considering a Kicks; thank you for doing your review in snow country, for those of us who live in cold climates. Want a smaller SUV for less than $30k OTD in this current auto market.
@@braetonwilson4296 Hardly enough to make the Ecosport a decent car. It's slow, homely inside and out, and has an extremely cheaply made interior. And no, it isn't reliable, either. The Kicks has a POS transmission, but is otherwise decent.
@Moe Waste or not, AWD is a desirable trait for most consumers who buy crossovers, even small crossovers. For example, the Honda HRV became more desirable when they included AWD.
The Rouge and the smaller Rogue Sport (basically the same size as the Kicks) both offer AWD. They keep the price down and also increase interior volume by not offering AWD on the Kicks----and for most parts of the USA, there's no reason to even have the AWD.
Nissan sales took a 30% kicking in 2020, I wonder if they will still be here next year. BTW I don't think you are being fair to dumpsters when you mention them in connection to the EcoSport.
Ecosport is not bad. I like that the Ecosport has 4WD and a traditional 6 speed automatic transmission, no CVT. Two huge advantages over this Nissan Kicks. All the Ecosport owners I talked to love their cars.
What your sayin makes no sense... why? used car dealership would get a " used " car with only little warranty first off.. then they would add the little theres will give the customer.. well people tend to blame the dealership and not the car itself so your dealership could end up loosing money depending on the wording in the warranty to get the cvt fixed ectra.. The customer would see you selling them junk and not come back.. yet your dealership gets Nissans and usually needs to get the cvt replaced.. im just sayin your comment sounds odd to me as a customer. If i knew a dealer made the comment you just said id not shop there, not cause of the car but what you said.. " you purposely sale junk?"
I purchased a brand new 2023 Nissan Kicks SR with Premium Package in Boulder Gray Pearl back in October of 2023 and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with my new Nissan. The longer I own it the more I appreciate how good of a car it really is for the price. I find more and more little things it does and I tell you its good all kind of features especially on the safety front. It does everything so well and is just a really well rounded vehicle that is an unbeatable value especially in features per dollar. I live my Kicks! Comfort: The front seats are so comfortable and just hold you perfectly and support your back and legs so well (I am 5’11”). I usually have issues with seats not supporting my thighs because I have long legs. Not in the Kicks, its seats support the back of my thighs perfectly. The 2024 Altima SR I had drove had a much shorter bottom seat cushion it seemed and my thighs were not supported and were up off the seat at a weird angle no matter how I adjusted the power seat. Now the Sentra SR seats were excellent and had a long supportive bottom seat cushion and were even a tad better than the Kicks seats. But anyway the seats in the Kicks I love and are perfect to me lol. Also the multicolor Primatex Synthetic Leather material used on the top trim SR with Premium Package is so durable lookibg and feeling with such a sporty flare. You can tell they will hold up very well compared to true leather and they have not sagged, creased or got shiny at all like a lot of real leathers do on the seat bolster getting in and out. My 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE top trim that I traded on this Kicks had neat premium plaid cloth seats with leatherette bolsters and after 2.5 years of owning it the seats had not one sign of wear, no creasing, no shininess and no sagging and in the top trim Mirage SE the material is very thick and durable like this Kicks. The front area in the Kicks is so roomy with tons of legroom and I and headroom its crazy. I keep the bottom part of the seat in its half way back/forth position and the pump action height adjustment I keep in the lowest position. If I slide the driver seat all the way back I cannot push the pedals thats how much seat travel they give lol. However it slides back soooo far that it eliminates rear leg room lol. I have long legs and am almost 6 ft and in my seating position I can sit behind my self with room to spare. The rear seats are just as comfortable and you sit very high looking over the front seats and like I said I still have a ton of head and leg room behind my driving position. I know some cars have what they call stadium seating in the rear but I have never experienced it as much as in the Kicks as you sit very high and way above the front seats and if you get car sick (I hate riding in the rear seat) it really helps because you do not feel like your in the back seat and are up high and not claustrophobic feeling at all. Even still there is a ton of headroom. Back in the front seat like I said I keep the height adjustment in its lowest position like I do in all vehicles I own and its perfect for me and leaves a ton of headroom above my head like several inches. Everything in the Kicks is just placed in easy reach and is so easy to use and understand. It fits me perfectly. Cargo: The cargo area is huge for such a small vehicle at 169 inches long. It has 25 cubic feet and can hold so much more than you realize and even the sides of the cargo area are carpeted which keeps the car quieter and prevents getting those ugly scratch marks. It also has 2 built in bag holders and a very heavy duty solid cargo cover. The cargo cover only comes standard when you get the top trim SR and add the $1,400.00 Premium Package which I did. Features: Where do I begin. This top trim SR with the $1,400.00 Premium Package is loaded for such a small car and comes in under $26,000.00. It has things like rear parking sensors, 360 surround view cameras, rear automatic emergency braking (rare in vehicles under $40K) for parking and works damn well, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 8 speaker Bose audio system with 2 neat speakers built into the drivers seat headrest, 8 inch audio touch screen, 7 inch half digital gauge cluster screen that does all kind of things, led headlights, led tail lights, led fog lights, 17 inch alloy wheels, push button start, remote start with intelligent climate control that heats or cools the car and even heats your seats and steering wheel and it bases what it does on the outside temp, auto digital climate control, auto up down drive and front passenger windows, nissan Connect Telematics, super sharp Primatex synthetic leather seats that are light gray and charcoal with orange accent stitching, primatex dash pad, rear seat occupancy alert reminder and so much more. This thing is loaded for under $26,000.00 with features reserved for more expensive vehicles.i absolutely love its 8 speaker Bose personal audio system it sounds amazing and looks cool too with the driver seat headrests. The 360 surround view camera system with multiple views makes parking a snap too. I just love everything about my Kicks. Safety Features: Wow does this Kicks have the safety features and they work very well and do not miss a beat. Lane departure warning with haptic steering wheel, forward collision alert and auto braking, rear collision alert and auto braking, rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, auto high beams, led lighting systems, park assist, 360 surround view camera, dynamic control module for engine braking (SR only) - ride control and pitch (SR only) - handling with active trace and yaw control (SR only), abs, electric parking brake with auto hold feature, stability and traction control, digital tire pressure display for all 4 tires, easy tire fill with horn alert, radar adaptive cruise control, Nissan Telematics with SOS button and automatic crash notification, 10 airbags, zero gravity seats, security system and more!!! Driving: The Kicks really impresses me with how it drives. Another thing that really impresses me is its sound build quality as the vehicle has absolutely no squeaks or rattles even when super cold out and just has a solid feel. This CUV does not have a wallow type ride like our Eclipse Cross SUV does to the point there is to much movement that can make you sick. The Kicks is planted and firm yet has a great ride and handles bumps and all very well. I know the SR has the dynamic module thing for ride control adjustments, torque vectoring using the brakes and active engine braking using the CVT and engine but I am not sure if the suspension on the SR (sporty trim lol) is any different than in the S or SV trim. But the point is it has a good ride which a lot of online reviews agree with. Thats impressive for its size and price. Like I said the Kicks drives with a very solid feel and has great steering thats very direct and communicative and very well controlled. It has a nice ride height too with 7 inches of ground clearance which is pretty good for a small CUV. The driving position and visibility are amazing and it had a huge windshield and huge windows all around. As far as power goes it does pretty good and has a very low reving engine while cruising and becomes very quiet. Also its idle is very quiet. The windshield wipers front and rear work great and the driver side wiper is huge and sweeps like every inch of the windshield for maximum visibility. The rear wiper has 2 settings which is nice, an intermittent speed and a constant steady speed. It gets great MPGs too and does better than most all in its class. On the highway it can get close to 40 mpg which is amazing. CVT (JF015E-RE0F11B Jatco CVT 7) Engine (HR16DE -1.6L 4 Cylinder) The CVT which everyone knows about and complains is a major sore point for Nissan unfortunately. I know they had issues years back on past generation Jatco CVTs but they have improved tremendously. My last 3 Mitsubishi Mirages (2015, 2017, 2021) all had the same Jatco CVT-7 as the Nissan Kicks and I had no issues. In fact our last 7 vehicle’s have all had Jatco produced CVTs with no issues and our 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring with S-AWC is 5 years old now and we have had no issues with its Jatco sourced CVT. I really like the programming of the CVT-7 in the Nissan Kicks and it really feels neat. It drives like a true geared automatic transmission with simulated fake shift points that make the car feel more responsive and fun. I love it. Also on the SR you have the active engine braking, active trace control and active ride management. As for the engine in the Kicks it is the HR16DE and has been around since like 2004! Of course over the years it has had several major updates and little tweaks but is still the same basic engine. I personally like that as it’s a simple older style proven powertrain. I have no issues with that.

These companies can honestly save billions by having 2 suv's, 2 sedans and a pick up reducing the cost of making so many models and trims and still cover 90% of their customer base as well as lowering the MSRP of said vehicles because you don't need to cover so many models with so many different specs etc. Really feel like these car companies are copying samsung with having a phone at every 20$ price point.
You don't get it. Americans are so crazy about crossovers/SUVs that manufacturers can sell five different crossovers and they will all sell well. Plus these manufacturers can sell these crossovers for higher prices than sedans despite similar production costs so this is a huge profit making operation for these car manufacturers.
They would probably save more money buying aisin transmissions for there cars then replacing hundreds of thousands of them for free as a warranty fix every year..
The weird cvt movements is such a total bummer. This car has everything I want and need. Love the look and design. The price is amazing for everything you get with this vehicle. But the CVT is a deal breaker. I’ve been driving a 2015 versa note for 4 years. It’s the highest trim with the additional tech package offered at the time. I love this car and wouldn’t even be thinking about trading it in, except for the CVT! It’s never failed or had to be replaced, but for someone that drives the interstate everyday, I feel like I’m playing with fire. There’s a constant delay with accelerating that makes it very dangerous when switching lanes or getting on the ramps. I am by no means an aggressive or fast driver. So if I’m having issues with this, then there is a problem. I was hoping Nissan had improved this in the 6 years since but I guess not. Nissan if your listening FIX THIS ISSUE!!
They say to change the transmission fluid and filters every 30,000 miles. Otherwise, the transmission will fail due to metal shards. I imagine it has two filters just like the Kicks.
My recent Lyft driver picked me up in one of these. As someone who has owned an original KIA Soul for 11 years, I still think the box on wheels is a very practical choice. This isn't quite as content rich as the KIA Soul, but the ride isn't as harsh either.
I think the Kicks is closest to a Versa note replacement than the Juke. That Juke had weirdly high horsepower for its class, more than most midsize sedans back then. They really wanted it to be a Pulsar GTi-R successor for North America
@@Zonno5 lol, I’m thinking of trading my Altima for the top trim one if I can find it. I saw a DudeinBlue video on a tuned one and the idea of crusing in that became infectious
This car is tons of fun good looking and very popular. I'm actually surprised it took this long for the review to come out. Been in the US for a year or two now.
This vehicle is intended to be a vehicle meant for city driving. It can be had with a 360 degree camera, which is rare for vehicles at this cheap price point. With the small size and 360 camera, it's easy to park. It gets great fuel economy. Nissan just introduced a new small crossover called the Magnite for India and other markets like that, which is similar to the Kicks but is actually better looking. It will have a 999cc inline 3-cylinder engine with a manual trans, or the same engine with a turbo with a CVT.
Watching the whole video + liking as always just to support the channel, even tho i would never touch suvs or other piles with a 100 foot pole. Keep Up the Great Work!!
I received one of these as a rental while my car gets fixed, I was curious as to what I was driving and watched this video. I’m not a huge fan of Nissan and their design elements but this has been a satisfactory vehicle so far
Saying this honestly, I'm glad to see a CVT programmed to act like a CVT. Fake shift points are...pointless. But that note about power cutoff with traction control is definitely odd.
Yeah, I am a bit surprised by how readily they simulate shift points on CVTs considering it costs efficiency. And since everything is electronic, why is it such a big thing to just make it an optional mode switch??
My wife and I bought her a 2017 6mt corolla iM hatch brand new at the end of 2017 for 14,600, the list price was right around 20,000, but I'm a cheap SOB and it was the only manual on the lot that had been sitting there for a while. It has DWB rear suspension, a full suite of drivers aides (which we turn off), dual zone climate control, and of course Toyota reliability it's been a great car. The reason I bring it up is because deals can be had if you buy at the right time and keep emotions out of the negotiations. We were only half looking for a car when we bought it; her 2007 5mt Yaris had about 130k on it at the time, the rear wheel speed sensors had died and the AC compressor had just died; basically repairs we're going to cost more than the car was worth, but it was still mechanically functioning so I started looking, when this deal came along we went for it, and traded the Yaris in towards the corolla. Don't settle for a CVT equipped Nissan, you'll regret it once the warranty is up.
Just test drove one of these this weekend, my wife liked it. This car was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever driven. I'm 6'2" and the seats are so high my head was almoat on the ceiling and I couldn't see past the rear view mirror. One more important thing, it has less power than a 80s chevette. Slammed the gas down just to test it out and it screamed really loud but did nothing except ramp up the rooms. The transmission does shift very smoothly.
IDK why but I hated in the beginning when he was sitting on his hands. He won me over by the end of the video. Who knew that would be a trigger? lol subscribed!
I just bought a brand new 2001 Nissan kick it is a beautiful car even people on the sidewalk now the car is really look at it it's really unique looking and real good paint on it shines like glass it is sure it's a beautiful car I'm glad I bought it
@@maniacrevenge It's not laziness, it's about performance and fuel efficiency. A computer controlled automatic can shift faster and with a larger number of gears can get better fuel economy.
Literally did the math: You can haggle a good price off of a sedan (since its a "dying" segment), get a XSE camry for the mid 20's, finance it, sell it after 3 years, and still loose ZERO dollars. Or you can buy this thing that you will never be able to get rid of and will HAVE TO bite all the CVT repair bills.
By that logic you could do the same to the kicks and get in the mid teens... not to mention super low interest and insurance. Plus despite what so many are desperate to believe CVT units hold a similar failure rate to other types across the board, especially if you fail to maintain the things. Not sure if its elitist or ablest to not be able to consider someone wanting a cheap new car that sips gas and has all that safety tech
@@air-headedaviator1805 it's actually harder to haggle down the lower the starting price. I managed to pick up my XSE for 25k but couldn't get a base LE bellow 21, and they wouldn't even budge on a corolla. Plenty of buffer to work with the higher up the price pyramid you go. It's also almost impossible to get deals on crossovers since they sell themselves to dumb blondes and oblivious gen z's. It's also not a smart purchase. You spend 22k on a car that isn't any better than a 25k car except that the 25k car isn't based on a bottom of the barrel junk architecture. You should be buying the car based on its underpinnings and reputation not the gimmicks.
Mexican here, can confirm SG is huge here just like the kicks! Even if previous generations performed poorly on the moose test. There's videos on youtube regarding the base kicks without stability control and fortunately the videos of SG & the moose where taken down #notnatural.
Really nice little car. Perfect size for me (used to have a Kia Soul and loved it). If only it had a decent, reliable transmission (or just a manual would be fine) and another 40hp I'd pay another $1000 for it.
Please consider driving these budget boxes on the highway-- how well they can get up to speed on the ramps, or highway speed acceleration [lack of?]. Sometimes us 'mericans need to be able to go from 70 to 85 mph and don't want the car to take 5 miles to get there. amirite *LOVE your reviews tho!
10:14 Rarely have I seen Mark so baffled over what the car is doing. It's bordering on being dangerous because you just don't expect the power delivery to fall flat on its face while the CVT lurches around like a drunk. This car would be acceptable if it weren't for the JATCO CVT, it's a junk design best suited for golf carts.
Yes it's popular in a lot of country, from Argentina I give you hints why: It's a basic powertrain so it's easy AND cheap to repair anywhere. An SUV is ideal for our roads that are not in great shape. It's tiny, our bigcity have narrow streets so it's a perfect fit. And, we have close to no loans here, so it's one payment cash only and this car has a lot to offer for the price. In the US the cars are very cheap, it's another story of course, but here, it check all the boxes.

This just popped into my suggested list. Considering a Kicks; thank you for doing your review in snow country, for those of us who live in cold climates. Want a smaller SUV for less than $30k OTD in this current auto market.
No AWD option with a snowmobile transmission, interesting choices Nissan.
Yep, at least the Ford Ecosport has 4WD and a traditional 6 speed automatic transmission. Ecosport is not bad, not perfect but a decent little car.
@@mezzb They have the Rogue if you want AWD. This is for people who can only afford a Versa but they must have something shaped like an SUV.

I work at a used car dealership and anytime we get a Nissan in, you can almost always bet money that the CVT needs to be replaced
@@Tinrs80 If the CVT is trashed it more than likely gets sent to auction and becomes someone elses problem.
This makes little sense to me. What kind of imbevilically run dealership buys vehicles needing major repairs? That's just bad business.
Comfort:
The front seats are so comfortable and just hold you perfectly and support your back and legs so well (I am 5’11”).
Cargo:
The cargo area is huge for such a small vehicle at 169 inches long.
Features:
Where do I begin.
Safety Features:
Wow does this Kicks have the safety features and they work very well and do not miss a beat. Lane departure warning with haptic steering wheel, forward collision alert and auto braking, rear collision alert and auto braking, rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, auto high beams, led lighting systems, park assist, 360 surround view camera, dynamic control module for engine braking (SR only) - ride control and pitch (SR only) - handling with active trace and yaw control (SR only), abs, electric parking brake with auto hold feature, stability and traction control, digital tire pressure display for all 4 tires, easy tire fill with horn alert, radar adaptive cruise control, Nissan Telematics with SOS button and automatic crash notification, 10 airbags, zero gravity seats, security system and more!!!
Driving:
The Kicks really impresses me with how it drives.
CVT (JF015E-RE0F11B Jatco CVT 7)
Engine (HR16DE -1.6L 4 Cylinder)
The CVT which everyone knows about and complains is a major sore point for Nissan unfortunately.
YESS FINALLY A CVT THAT DOESNT FAKE SHIFT
I rather it fake shift than sound like that piece of one gear shit

They share mechanicals and can be made on the same assembly lines. It costs a lot less to just design a new body and interior.
They would probably save more money buying aisin transmissions for there cars then replacing hundreds of thousands of them for free as a warranty fix every year..
The only car review channel I can stomach. Keep up the good work soon
Top of the line but has 7 blank switches in one location. That would drive me fucking mad.

Same to me , mentioning about Renault not in bad way , about India too, respect .
I think the Kicks is closest to a Versa note replacement than the Juke. That Juke had weirdly high horsepower for its class, more than most midsize sedans back then. They really wanted it to be a Pulsar GTi-R successor for North America
I wouldn't be surprised if the Juke turns out to be a desirable car in 4 to 6 years.
@@Zonno5 lol, I’m thinking of trading my Altima for the top trim one if I can find it. I saw a DudeinBlue video on a tuned one and the idea of crusing in that became infectious
Thanks, Mark. You addressed the negatives but you didn’t mock it because it doesn’t perform like a $30-50,000 vehicle.

Its a shame you don't get the new mk2 Juke we have here in Europe. Very cool looking car I think. Much improved over the mk1.
This car is tons of fun good looking and very popular. I'm actually surprised it took this long for the review to come out. Been in the US for a year or two now.
“The Ford Ecosport like something they just basically pulled out of a dumpster” 😂

The sound of the Nissan CVT makes me nauseous
So glad you put vehicles up on the lift. Shows us what we are paying for. Thankyou.
Nissan is doing a good job with these new models. They're serious about staying alive as a company.
It’s pretty cool, can definitely get the kick out of it.

Good honest review I liked it great job.

I own a Kicks 2019 and I love it.....no problems at all...it is a reliable car!!!
Yes it's popular in a lot of country, from Argentina I give you hints why:
It's a basic powertrain so it's easy AND cheap to repair anywhere.
My BMW also has an automatic breaking system, except it only detects when the warranty is up.
