Hah, we've preserved them alright! I don't know what the situation in Serbia is exactly (though I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar to ours, perhaps even in all countries of our region), but here in Bulgaria we have an enormous problem with the so-called treasure hunters (imanyari). Especially in our poorest north-western region (right next to Serbia), there are reportedly thousands of locals engaged with practically destroying our (local, European and world) history. For example, they've already largely destroyed the Roman colony of Ratiaria - one of only three cities in Bulgaria which had the status of a Roman colony. They're using tractors and other heavy machinery and are destroying everything, only so they could find some artifacts and their bosses can make millions (or maybe even billions) by selling them at Western auction houses. It's a good thing that our Balkan region is truly rich in history and archaeology, so we still have some things left, but the losses are catastrophic (and irreversible) nevertheless. P.S. Just for the record, the Bulgars have been gone for over a thousand years. We're Bulgarians.

Gokekli Tepe is like 11,000 years old. There's no cover-up here. The monuments of Sumer and Egypt were still standing in the 18th century so we just assumed they were the oldest. Now we know civilization actually started much farther back but that stuff was harder to find.

I'm from Varna and I remember having a history class in our Archaeological Museum in front of the oldest gold found on earth. We even went to the graves near Varna where it was found. I'm sure there are plenty of other splendid discoveries about those early ages of civilization in today's lands of Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukrajna, Serbia, etc... However, it has nothing to do with today's people of those countries - this is much older and greater.
I think the *I2a* gene present in our genetic mix in the Balkans, as one of the main distinctive components of the region - *is* linked to the DNA results of the ancient bones discovered on the land. So, there is genetic continuity (and therefore a connection) in today's populations. Culturally however, I'd agree that we're likely very different & almost all of that ancient civilization has been lost, replaced by something else, morphing through time. (it's only natural...)

I've read his book 📖 It's interesting but very dense. He writer a 📖 named The Horse The Wheel The Language How Bronze Age Age Riders From the Eurasian Steppes Shaped The Modern World. He has written a thorough going book about the origin of the Indo-European languages aka proto Indo-European European (PIE for short). He believes that PIE originated in the Pontic Caspian Steppes. IMHO He could have given less detailed description of the finds of grave goods and caches

The Thracians who lived on the Lower Danube during Antiquity instead called it Istros (and from them it passed on into Greek) and that form of the name remained for centuries after the Romans introduced the form Danuvius (f.e the Byzantine 11th c. province of Paristrion was also known as Paradounavion). Of course, the Proto-Indo-European root *dānu is also the root of many other rivers as well - the Dniester, Dnieper, Don/Tanais and so on, so your Danav reference may be referring to just about any body of water where the early Indo-Europeans lived.

The genetic and cultural connections between these old civilizations and modern ones are so little that any assumed direct connection (Cucuteni = Serbian) is laughable. In fact, the Cucutenians are pre-Indo-Europeans, and the Satem Balto-Slavs are Indo-European invaders. I'd throw a hypothesis out there that you're maybe 5-15% (a stretch) genetically related to those ancient European cultures. The rest of what you commented is pure Balkan nationalistic garbage. Once again, the pre-Indo-European Old Europe civilizations clashed with Indo-European invaders. The proto-Balto-Dacian-Illyrian-Thracian-Slavs had been at some point invaders in these lands, likely from the north Pontic steppes (Kurgan hypothesis). Hah, we've preserved them alright! I don't know what the situation in Serbia is exactly (though I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar to ours, perhaps even in all countries of our region), but here in Bulgaria we have an enormous problem with the so-called treasure hunters (imanyari). Especially in our poorest north-western region (right next to Serbia), there are reportedly thousands of locals engaged with practically destroying our (local, European and world) history. For example, they've already largely destroyed the Roman colony of Ratiaria - one of only three cities in Bulgaria which had the status of a Roman colony. They're using tractors and other heavy machinery and are destroying everything, only so they could find some artifacts and their bosses can make millions (or maybe even billions) by selling them at Western auction houses. It's a good thing that our Balkan region is truly rich in history and archaeology, so we still have some things left, but the losses are catastrophic (and irreversible) nevertheless.
P.S. Just for the record, the Bulgars have been gone for over a thousand years. We're Bulgarians.

The genetic and cultural connections between these old civilizations and modern ones are so little that any assumed direct connection (Cucuteni = Serbian) is laughable. In fact, the Cucutenians are pre-Indo-Europeans, and the Satem Balto-Slavs are Indo-European invaders. I'd throw a hypothesis out there that you're maybe 5-15% (a stretch) genetically related to those ancient European cultures. The rest of what you commented is pure Balkan nationalistic garbage. Don't worry, it's not just you. Many of my fellow Romanians feel "proud" to be descended from said old cultures as well. But it's not really so.

Romanian is romance, Bulgarian and Serbian are slavic. Culturally, we are Balkan (rusalka-iele etc) the folk songs, the accoutrements, etc. But Old Europeans we are not.
