This used to be my absolute favourite film when I was little. The amount of "Everybody wants to be a cat" I sang is *astronomical*
Also, little random fact, I still call blended minestrone "Creme-a-la-Edgar", because that was the only way for my grandma to get me to eat it.

For serious? I'd never eat something called that as a tiny kid. It would make me worried it would knock me out. It's like when The Simpsons made me think monorails were dangerous (although if I'd been a little older, I would have known it was just the ones Hartman's character was selling - but seeing one with broken brakes and another dangling from a broken rail...

This was the first Disney Animated Canon film after Walt died, so they were kind of aimless trying to make this one. I definitely find this one charming, but I can also see why it's one of the more generally unpopular Canon entries.

Phil Harris (the voice of O'Malley) recorded an alternate version of "Ev'rybody Wants to be a Cat" shortly after the movie was released. In the movie, the song is in 3 distinct parts, with a tempo change each time, and with many cast members. The alternate version was just Harris, and stayed with the soft jazz of the first section, basically more of a "hit single" than a movie scene. This version has only appeared on a couple of "Best of Disney" record and cassette compilations, and has never been released on CD or any streaming service, so some years ago I ripped it from a cassette and used it as the audio for a cat compilation video. ua-cam.com/video/1pmCE62OD8s/v-deo.html

But really, what a sweet and humble story and just a fun time honestly. This, Robin Hood, and The Rescuers were definitely some great gems from Disney's 70s era. I really hope you'll give us the Rescuers at some point! That one was definitely a stand-out film in the time after Walt's death, which led to a pretty incredible sequel during the Disney Renaissance.

Wolfgang Reitherman might not be a household name but he should be. He was an animator on Disney movies going back to the 1930s, he worked on Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty. He also directed 101 Dalmations, The Aristocats, The Rescuers, Robin Hood, The Sword In The Stone and The Fox & The Hound.
I wonder how many people have seen most if not all the movies he's worked on and still don't know his name.

A few years ago (2018 I think), a family in Texas adopted a white cat they named Duchess because of this movie. They thought she'd been spayed, but not long after they adopted her, she had kittens - a black male kitten, an orange male kitten, and a white female kitten. So naturally they named them after the rest of the cast. (There was also a "bonus" kitten born last that they named Blue.) You can Google "real life Duchess and kittens" or "real life aristocats" or something along those lines and see them. They're a beautiful little family of fur babies.

For some reason all the scenes with the two dogs were hilarious to me as a kid, especially the one by the haystack. Used to rewind those scenes over and over cause I thought they were the funniest thing I’d ever seen.
Also: a lot of Disney films from this era don’t have great reviews. And looking back I see a lot of issues with quite a few of them. Certain scenes aren’t as captivating and they do drone on for a while. I think they still have a sort of unique charm to them, but they aren’t perfect. They aren’t grand or epic, just smaller stories.
If you haven’t already you should watch The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh :) go in expecting it to be a compilation of short stories! It’s extremely charming. I’d say that, The Jungle book, and The Fox and the Hound were the best Disney films with this particular more sketchy animation style.

    Ok I gotta say :
As a french, I was very surprised when I first heared in this video the english version of "Scales and Arpeggios", because although I see what they tried to do by keeping the recordings with mistakes or whatever, and I'm guessing the voice actors were probably children... But yeah it doesn't sound very good, and that bugged me because this song was litteraly one of my favorite Disney songs growing up (liking both cats and also being a musician surely helped xD, but the song was beautiful by itself too).
I cannot recommand you enough to check out the french version of this song, because it is much more pleasant to the ear in every way imaginable (I also overall find the French dub much better than the english original during this entire movie, both on the performance of Duchesse and the kittens, or even Madame).
Edit : watching this video reminded me how hilarious and great I found the geese to be in this movie. I loved them both dearly.

Its okay if it wasn't your thing Nick, thing is with the Aristocats is, it does fall short a bit as a disney animated film. Walt died just 4 years before this film, the 70's and 80's were known as a very dark period for Disney as a company at the time. With Walt gone, it was very hard to recapture his magic in films. They almost had to file for bankruptcy until The Great Mouse Detective finally made them enough money to stay afloat, tho I'm sure later on The Little Mermaid was what really put them on the path of success. Personally I love this film however I so realize its flaws but I'm Nostalgic for it haha.

Well, another Bronze Era movie and the last one Walt Disney himself approved before his death! This movie is my childhood. But I don't mind that it's not great for adults. All I ask is appreciation of the trippy bits. And I think that's more than what you appreciated in this.
Fun fact: When I was really little and the music stopped at the end, Toulouse's "Oh yeah" was a major jump scare for me because the screen was almost blank and I thought that meant there wasn't going to be anything more. Good thing I didn't see The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad when I was little. I'd probably have reacted the same way to the narrator's final "Man, I'm getting out of here."
