And as you explained you could have given him more room, but hind sight is 20/20. If the Porsche were a front engine car it would have spun like you expected it to. What happened to only overtaking on the straights and by invitation only? Lunge round the outside on a high speed corner? Brilliant. We did Silverstone a few months ago and honestly it was a free for all. My mate got passed on both sides by 2 Caterhams mid corner! It's only a track day. Calm down everyone. 🙄🤗

Never a great day when damage occurs phill , as has been said both of you are fine (most important) love your upbeat attitude think most would be gutted Phills approach improvements coming 😂 superb footage guys. Look forwards to rebuild/ upgrades easily rectified by jay and yourself stay safe .
The GT2 driver looked a bit inexperienced beyond the limit, not nearly enough lock early on and didn't control the spin afterwards, such a shame. You're so used to hanging up the inside of cars drifting it's no surprise, I would probably have done the same and been like 'oh that's cool WAIT OH NO'
Said the same to a mate just now. As a non-drifter I'd have backed away from that situation and allowed more room, but I can see why someone used to drifting and twinning etc wouldn't bat an eyelid at a car out of shape and stay a lot closer. Gutted for both drivers tho. Two very awesome cars out of action 😔
thank you for the excitement. terrible shame the way the accident happened, i dont think you could have predicted the 996 (what it looked like, could be wrong) to roll backwards like that after the spin... also just a shout out to the black e30! man that car was fast with what sounded like an s54 motor and analog shifting!
Man, mad respect on the attitude as well. I mean, after all though, life does go on and it did happen on the track. Lessons learned and that is a good thing despite the outcome. I am sure his rear quarter and intake area don't look too good. And yeah, bad time to overtake, I'd have waited until coming out of corner. All the best on the rebuild mate.
Loving the attitude towards this. This is why I had a track toy because if you’re gonna crash it that’s what it’s built for. Also big props to Nickson Motorsport for making it so strong. This is why he built the roll cage in my old R53!
Always good to have a positive attitude but u also have to hold yourself accountable. This accident could have been easily avoided judging by the footage. Sometimes you gotta let go of your ego on track and put safety first. Couldve gone worse but also couldve been avoided...
dang the way the Porsche skidded out what pretty unpredictable, I though he was gonna swerve completely out of your way but then came back out of skid and momentum reversed his car back in to your path, so unlucky in that regard.
wow great attitude ! Such inspiring channel, never been on a real trackday just currently doing sim stuff. Hopefully one day I'll make it to track thanks for tips and being transparent with sharing the less great stuff, newcomers need to be aware of the risks involved in racing.
Having watched the crash over and over quite a few times I've watched and gotta say (I'm very objective in doing so) that Phil was not at fault this time 100%! No question!
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been considering track daying, so this was really informative - and cleverly produced, as I have come to expect from DW. Best of luck for the surgery ahead !
Hate to say it mate, but this was as much your fault as it was the Porsche drivers'. You did brake way early for that turn which forced the Porsche driver to run wide and probably panic brake. He still had way too much speed to carry around the outside, especially as you swerved all over the place. As soon as you saw his back end stepping out you'd have needed to let off instead of accelerating. That steering correction you needed to make because of your acceleration is what finally caused you to run into him. In a racing scenario, this would have been a "shit happens" moment, but on a track day where you literally have nothing to prove to anyone, you should have just swallowed your ego.
All those attributing blame one way or the other are clearly driving gods. Both drivers could have done things very differently and Phil had more opportunities once it started going wrong to get out of it all as he said in the video. Being way off the racing line prior to the corner opened the door for the GT2, and don’t agree it was the standard sort of overtake under braking. If I were the GT2 I’d have seen it as someone letting me through who would slow down substantially more going towards the corner. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Haha yeah I mean, we don't know what it was like being there... and it's easy to judge from the comfort of my couch.. but coming from very serious sim racing, looks like he had ages to do something and avoid the crash, like... freaking porsche going sideways for a solid two seconds or so and he had time to lift a little, and go back to the gas, he should have slow down and maneuver right there, and then last chance was to do a very aggressive maneuver to the left, doesn't seem like he reacted, anyway... just watched the crash footage I'm unaware of whatever explanation he might have
You can hear him laughing so I assume he thought cool. This guy is pulling a drift around the corner. Not realising he was out of control and not experienced in keeping it going in the right direction. I.e. continuing in a drift.
Man it’s sad what has happen to possibly a dream build for me. But your optimism makes these videos so much more worth it, people always wanting to hate without seeing. Always love your positivity and ofc keep it going strong! ///M
It's one of them, you'll watch it back and wish you'd have just given the porsche more space. It was clear he was in trouble, u defo had time to give him space. But its done now. Its a what if
That one hurt to watch, glad you're okay. And, having no real chassis damage is a bit of a silver lining- you'll have the suspension and bodywork repaired in no time with Jay working on it! Hope the repair goes well 🙏
@@alexh1218 If you’ve ever been to a circuit for a track day you will very quickly learn that ‘racing’ is the number one thing not allowed. It’s a track day so technically it is not racing… 🤦🏻♂️ Overtaking is only allowed under certain conditions, usually along straights and on the outside of the circuit. If you are the slower vehicle you are asked to slow down and pull over to allow the faster car to pass. Most circuits don’t even allow lap timing to prevent people pushing too hard. These are track days, not race days. They have far fewer Marshalls and the drivers have far less talent than professionals. Plus the cars are, in most instances less suited for track conditions compared to a race prepared vehicle.
@@jakemico I mean I have a time attack / production car and go to multiple open test days and there’s basically no rules surrounding overtaking or hard racing and a lot of the times are present, sounds like you go to happy laps or coffee laps which is a waste of time.

I had something similar at Combe a couple months ago on the final right hander at the start finish. There is next to no run off on the left and I ended up with a ton of oversteer when I turned right.. I absolutely knew I really didnt want to be crossing the track backwards going off to the left I knew there were at least three cars going fast behind me, I absolurely knew crossing the track would be a real pain, so I kept my foot in, pinned, and I oversteered nicely to the right, didnt actually spin, sort of gathered it up on the grass. In short, when stuff goes wrong like that, you still need to be making decisions

Ppl acting like you weren’t doing 100+kmph! The BMW would’ve had to do a dangerously hard swerve to avoid it. Bunch of comments from people who have never driven high speeds or been on a track!
Nice build, sorry about the crash for both you and the other party. You might want to consider selling the doors, if they are genuine M3 items, to someone restoring an M3. (They are M3-specific as they lack the side strip of the standard E30, as you probably know). I like the reinforcements in the front wheel well and the state of the chassis looks very clean too. The 'jacking point' you refer to is actually a receptacle in which the frame went that was used during manufacturing to move the body-in-white around in the factory back in the day.
I know you love your DCT and if it worked as intended it would be fantastic, but it seems to be a never ending headache for you. Will you reach a point where you just go sequential instead?
A good option would be to have the nearside wing 3d scanned and then create a mirror image wing in CAD to create moulds for both front wings. I have seen this done with great success.

We did Silverstone a few months ago and honestly it was a free for all. My mate got passed on both sides by 2 Caterhams mid corner!
It's only a track day. Calm down everyone. 🙄🤗
Here in the US they're insanely strict about that. Which I'm perfectly fine with them being strict. Don't need things like this happening.
@@FULLTHROTTLEAUTO Yep, 100%. No need for it. It's 'only' a track day. 😎
Biggest respect to you, and glad to hear your both are okay.
Brilliant stuff. Loving the CSL behind under the ramp. 😍 Sad about that GT2 and you bashing the M3, but as you say, sooner or later with racing these things happen.
Strongs Phill great attitude mate. Bit heart sore over the M3 I am sure the car will be better than ever once you're done. Silver lining is we will get to see lots of great M3 content coming soon.
Anticipate🙂 always if rear breaks out.. there is a great chance the wheels get traction again.. soo never pass on the outside.. only on the inside if enough room!
Thanks for the advice. It's useful as I have 0 experience with cars going sideways 👍
@@driftworks 🤣 I think a comments review video is well in order for this video. I'm more into bikes these days but your cars and way you mod them are proper cool 😎
@@driftworks to be fair mate that was entirely your fault 🤷 lucky you've got the money to fix it
i am loving the suspension setup goddayum that is absolutely BEAUTYFULLLLLLLLLL
Really Glad the damage wasn't too bad considering how bad it COULD have been! Look forward to seeing the new and improved car return ( some time in the future :D )!
Sorry, he may have made a mistake but he’s certainly very very very experienced.
thank you for the excitement. terrible shame the way the accident happened, i dont think you could have predicted the 996 (what it looked like, could be wrong) to roll backwards like that after the spin... also just a shout out to the black e30! man that car was fast with what sounded like an s54 motor and analog shifting!
cheers, hope you get it running soon. a bummer but also not that bad apart the custom bits! epic M3 btw
Thanks 👍
Man, mad respect on the attitude as well. I mean, after all though, life does go on and it did happen on the track. Lessons learned and that is a good thing despite the outcome. I am sure his rear quarter and intake area don't look too good. And yeah, bad time to overtake, I'd have waited until coming out of corner. All the best on the rebuild mate.
I lost a dust cap once and made more fuss than that! Great attitude!
That black e30 was smart and looked well set up 👌 unlucky on the smash but going hard its almost inevitable it's going to happen in some shape or form
11:39 Crash moment
Loving the attitude towards this. This is why I had a track toy because if you’re gonna crash it that’s what it’s built for. Also big props to Nickson Motorsport for making it so strong. This is why he built the roll cage in my old R53!
Always good to have a positive attitude but u also have to hold yourself accountable. This accident could have been easily avoided judging by the footage. Sometimes you gotta let go of your ego on track and put safety first. Couldve gone worse but also couldve been avoided...
Credit to the chassis build, that has stood up to the amazingly well! Apart from the bottom arm & wheel, it almost just cosmetic
That GT2 skid was sick until the crunch. Sucks but that’s life. Hope it’s back together soon 🙏🏼
dang the way the Porsche skidded out what pretty unpredictable, I though he was gonna swerve completely out of your way but then came back out of skid and momentum reversed his car back in to your path, so unlucky in that regard.
wow great attitude ! Such inspiring channel, never been on a real trackday just currently doing sim stuff. Hopefully one day I'll make it to track thanks for tips and being transparent with sharing the less great stuff, newcomers need to be aware of the risks involved in racing.
Easily avoidable, you didn't took enough evasive action and the car suddenly coming back caught you. But hey it's easier saying this on the couch
True with the couch bit but I also thought lol that was not super sudden or anything
Super positive attitude mate. Im sure the M3 will be back better than ever soon.
Having watched the crash over and over quite a few times I've watched and gotta say (I'm very objective in doing so) that Phil was not at fault this time 100%! No question!
Cyclist was at fault
@@dannyDC2 Cyclist at fault by default
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been considering track daying, so this was really informative - and cleverly produced, as I have come to expect from DW.
Best of luck for the surgery ahead !
Battle scars phil, i wish my jacking points on my 318iS we're like yours 😌
Mateys black M3 was looked quick !
Great video guys. Hope ye get back on track soon !
Terrible driving. I mean you could see it coming and you turned towards the dang car. Smh driver mod needed.
Haha yeah I mean, we don't know what it was like being there... and it's easy to judge from the comfort of my couch.. but coming from very serious sim racing, looks like he had ages to do something and avoid the crash, like... freaking porsche going sideways for a solid two seconds or so and he had time to lift a little, and go back to the gas, he should have slow down and maneuver right there, and then last chance was to do a very aggressive maneuver to the left, doesn't seem like he reacted, anyway... just watched the crash footage I'm unaware of whatever explanation he might have
He's definitely horrible driver ur right my grandmother with no hands could of handle that better.
You can hear him laughing so I assume he thought cool. This guy is pulling a drift around the corner. Not realising he was out of control and not experienced in keeping it going in the right direction. I.e. continuing in a drift.
if you just watched the video u all would know why he reacted that way
Man it’s sad what has happen to possibly a dream build for me.
Its a what if
All things considered you walked away and the car is in great shape. Cant wait for the rebuild!
That one hurt to watch, glad you're okay.
And, having no real chassis damage is a bit of a silver lining- you'll have the suspension and bodywork repaired in no time with Jay working on it!
Hope the repair goes well 🙏
Wow. It looked like very big damage at first. Hope you get it back on track soon. Nice video from both bmw's. Like the differ on the black M3
It’s racing, this is what happens, rebuild and resume - look forward to the coming episodes
This isn’t racing…
@@jakemico they’re on a track, so technically it is.
@@alexh1218 If you’ve ever been to a circuit for a track day you will very quickly learn that ‘racing’ is the number one thing not allowed. It’s a track day so technically it is not racing… 🤦🏻♂️
Overtaking is only allowed under certain conditions, usually along straights and on the outside of the circuit.
@@alexh1218 Sure you do...
As you clearly are an expert you should know a track day and a test day are two very different things. Timing is allowed at test days and I believe you may even need an ARDS license to take part.
Out of curiosity, which imaginary vehicle do you drive? and which class and series do you compete in?
Huge respect for your attitude towards this, not sure I would be as positive to be honest. I actually cancelled a track day with my road car later this month after seeing this on your IG. It's too good to potentially get written off because of someone else's mistake. Will finish my track toy over the Autumn and Winter and use that next year instead.
This could’ve 100% been avoided … I’m sorry that’s just poor reaction and bad driving
Lmao its literally the porsches fault
100% could have been, had I been able to see the future yep.
@@driftworks ah driftworks dont let them push the responsibility onto you, the porsche driver did dumb stuff that caused both of you to end up with undriveable cars
Honestly I would have done the same manoeuvre, I wouldn’t have expected him to slide backwards after he went sideways.
@@driftworks you are so bad driver man, go buy vw polo 1.2

@@driftworks no thank you for the material 👌
Glad everyone's okay. Shit happens... We just can't control it. Good luck and enjoy bro
After seeing how the GT2 was driven I’m mad about it.
Damn, i really love this car. Gutted to see it like that. Hopefully the gen2 won't take long. Also would absolutely love to see this car with a sequential gearbox, maybe pneumatic actuated so you could keep your paddle shifter.
Everybody loves a crash
Aslong as your not part of it 🤔
Great attitude man, mad respect and hope to see it on track again soon-ish
Guy in the Porsche should of been on the brakes after his spin. Him rolling back across the track shows the he just came off of all the pedals and expected everyone else sort it out.
Nope it was brakes that got him into that mess.
@@dannyDC2 just had a peek at your channel, my little incident was also in a red MR2.. sorry to hear about yours
@@matteightytwo shit, I’m at Combe next too 🤣
@@dannyDC2 Dude said after the spin!! It was a lack of skill that got him into that mess!!
Yeah probably should've backed out way sooner once the GT2 was sideways, but we live and learn, glad the damage isn't too bad, one of my favourite YT cars. Good luck sorting it out.
I hope the guy in the GT2 is taking his cars damage aswell as you are.
Looking forward to seeing you rebuild the M3 😊👍🏼
I really doubt that, looked like he was fully expecting to be driving the GT2 home again.
Very sorry to see your beauty a little hurt but awesome how it didnt get hurt too bad. Cant wait to see her in her full glory again soon. God bless. Love that car.

Glad you posted it
reaction time where?
Good luck with the repair! Hopefully it will be sorted soon!

Passed the Porsche on the m6 today on the back of a recovery truck and thought that’s a shame, then just seen this video, what’s the chances 😂
Fair play for your positivity! Sure it will be back better than before once gaz finds space
Saw the e30 I just had to sub
Clean car💪🔥
good on you guys for being smart car guys... this car could be a write off, but you strengthened it and its able to make a come back. i always loved your guys work driftworks.... i started following around the time you guys built the ls1 ae86 and never looked back
Nooooo, That car is so Effing awesome, but it was doing what it was made for. The GT2 was just a "production" car , your car was a completely custom build. I hope to see the videos of it getting fixed back to new. Your right, as soon as, that guy dive bombed you should've thrown out the anchor, but you live and learn. Why is the DCT so hard to get to work right again? That car is /was/hopefully soon again beautiful.
Sorry to see her wounded Phil, I’m sure J will have it back in tip top condition v soon. She an absolute weapon mate ! Can’t wait to see her back up and running soon 👍😎 Take it easy
Ppl acting like you weren’t doing 100+kmph! The BMW would’ve had to do a dangerously hard swerve to avoid it. Bunch of comments from people who have never driven high speeds or been on a track!
Sorry to see this, hope you manage to find time to get it sorted, this time when you’re happy with the wings take a mold from them first!
You could have avoided that crash
I know. I said it in the video.
You could have avoided that comment
@@bernhardscharnowsky1990 hahaha, yep he could've by actually watching the video
Much respect for the way you’re handling this.
No wonder they call gt2's widowmaker!!
Phil any plans to throw away dct and go manual or sequential ??
Nice build, sorry about the crash for both you and the other party.
You might want to consider selling the doors, if they are genuine M3 items, to someone restoring an M3. (They are M3-specific as they lack the side strip of the standard E30, as you probably know).
I like the reinforcements in the front wheel well and the state of the chassis looks very clean too.
The 'jacking point' you refer to is actually a receptacle in which the frame went that was used during manufacturing to move the body-in-white around in the factory back in the day.
Well, that was avoidable :/
Glad you're ok Phil, that could have gone a lot worse.
Live and learn pal.
She'll be back better than ever 👍
You seem to have taken it well so fair play for that. I'd be pissed off with that Porsche owner, that overtake was a prick move.
I am just about to watch it after seeing the pictures, I am gutted for you it’s my worst nightmare. Much love! 💙
This is why I hate taking my car on track days too many drivers with more ambition than talent
