My thoughts on the Premiership Dream Team and the Player of the Season for 2023/24. - Спорт
I am delighted that you put Will Evans in there. Deserves way more recognition than he gets. Ben Curry up there too IMO.
“The main reason Bath finished top in the regular season”? Er….😇🖤💚💛…….
I'd give Rusi Tuima and Alex Coles a shoutout for the second row spots. Consistently been great. Tuima proved himself to be a great carrying option and unique style of second row. Coles so solid both sides of the ball, makes an obscene amount of tackles for a guy that big but also improved his carrying picking up some tries where he runs good lines off 10.
It makes no sense to me that Tyrone has not been selected for the Springboks at some stage. He has been a special player since his schoolboy days. It will be a shame if we lose him to England. Hopefully he will be given a chance.
SA has never lacked depth in their backline tbf. Would definitely take him over Le Roux as fullback nowadays though
@@Gilescowdemdem Damian Willemse and Tyrone Green would be my choices with Fassi and Horn as their back ups.
Is his defence good enough though? Seems a bit of a turnstile sometimes (everything being relative). Then again so did Le Roux for Wasps, oddly 🤷♂️
1. Finn Baxter
2. Theo Dan
3. Thomas Du Toit
4. Maro Itoje
5. Courtney Lawes
6. Chandler Cunningham-South
7. Sam Underhill
8. Zach Mercer
9. Ben Spencer
10. Finn Russell
11. Ollie Sleightholm
12. Cameron Redpath
13. Henry Slade
14. Tommy Freeman
15. Tyrone Green
Only three Saints players and one of them out of position?😮
Courtney Laws is one of those players that ooze rugby.
1.Baxter
2.Langdon
3.Du Toit
4.Itoje
5.Coles
6.Lawes
7. Evans
8.Mercer
9.Spencer
10.F.Smith
11.Sleighthome
12.Esterhuizen
13.Slade
14.Feyi-Waboso
15.Green
Tommy Freeman deserves a spot. Much as I like Slade I feel Freeman offers more. When he is on the field things happen.
Freeman has started 6 games at 13 and 6 games on the wing in the Premiership. Makes it hard to pick him in either position over Feyi Waboso, Sleightholme or Slade, who have been exceptional in their set position. No reflection on Freeman, who is class, but hard to justify in a Dream Team.
@@EggchasersRugby I think Slade would be a better number 23 as he can play anywhere in the backline. Nice to have such difficult decisions and highlights what a wealth of talent England has.
Great set of selections. Slade as top pick especially.
You make an interesting point too about Will Evans with respect to his size and England selection. He's probably a little unlucky to have had to compete with the likes of the Currys, Willis, Underhill and Earl for that 7 shirt. And with Earl currently getting picks at 8, it makes it even more difficult to pick Evans imo.
Sale fans perspective:
The "would be in with a shout if they played for anyone but sale" selection:
Roebuck (joint top scorer but hardly mentioned compared to the exeter flyer)
Carpenter, very similar player to Green. Both high high class.
Ben Curry, finally a (fairly) injury free season and as club captain has been superb. Totally outplayed lord earl this weekend. Consistently man of the match.
This one is tough for me to admit, but the one player who proves me wrong time and again? Rob du preez.
Flop of the season? Raffi Quirke. He has a rough time in the middle with injuries but even on return is nowhere near as good as Gus warr.
Mentioned both of those guys (Curry and Roebuck). They great really strong. Someone else was marginally better, or in Curry's case - as good but for the whole season. Ha, Won't have a bad word said about Raffi - he's from my local club and comes and helps my sons team...he'll be back :)
To suggest Carpenter is similar to Green is an interesting take!!! Rafi has struggled a bit with consistency but at least he’s back fit. He’s miles more talented than Warr and we rely heavily on him off the bench at times to change the tempo. Warr has been good and should be starting but he’s out of his depth when it comes to the big games. Hopefully after a strong pre season Rafi can kick on for Sale and England.
Tim and describing players as ACE. Name a more iconic duo..
Great selection, Tim. WDYT of Spencer and Russell for the '25 Lions half-backs?
Shocked at the lack of saints in this list given they finished top
Their team has a balanced level of skill just below top tier (with exceptions of course) and it allows them to work together to find weak links in their opponents. they are the definition of teamwork over raw talent. My takeaway when watching them is this team is amazing rather than what a performance by whoever
Saints top of the table is a team/whole squad achievement. Individual accolades don't always reflect quality of a team. Look at Sale - top 4 and like Saints, won 12 out of 18 games but not a single player selected.
@@EggchasersRugbySale would have more in if it wasn’t for injuries I suspect.
@@EggchasersRugby overlooked alex coles and juarno augustus both had brilliant season - langdon the modern day hooker england need with dan on the bench
Nah Bath did apparently 😂
Thomas is a lose head. He played lose head at school and was moved to tight head by the Sharks because they had Beast at lose head. When Thomas played lose head for the Springboks against Wales he showed how good he can be at lose head. However he has been doing very well at tight head. With Frans Malherbe, Vincent Koch, Trevor Nyakane, Thomas Du Toit and Wilco Louw the Springboks are blessed with good players that can play tight head.
Thomas moving to a European club was a good call. I would have liked to see him play lose head but so be it. He is still a player that I will select for any international team.
As a Bath fan, I’m very satisfied with that analysis! Charlie Ewels has been a hugely improved player this year and the Finn / Ben partnership has been sublime to watch!
Can't really argue with any of those - but I'd always pick Smith, M at 10. He may not be the best all round fly half but he can do things that none of the others can and is just electric to watch.
I also really hope Will Evans gets a spot on the plane this summer.
Been hyped for this video
@eggchasersrugby please do a video on the URC permutations. Loving your videos!!
Great choices. Terrific. From a Quins point of view, Will Evans and Tyrone Green have been outstanding in every game. Evans can never be rested or subbed, he is too important!!!!
Spot on!
I think jacques vermeulen has a chance to be in this team he’s had a quietly superb season for Exeter
There seems to be a lot of our boys in the Prem. Had no idea. Ah well. Hope they're working hard for their clubs.👍🇿🇦
A bit off topic, but are you in South Africa on 3 August this year? Would like to invite you to the monster Interschools game between Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gym.
Solid team !! Sale have done amazingly to get the joint most amount of wins in the league and not have a single player the best in their position (I’m not criticising because it’s kinda true) however, it just shows how much hard work they put in against probably more talented teams. But we like being the underdogs and quietly going about our jobs as no one takes notice, hopefully we get another chance to show that northern rugby isn’t dead. Despite that there’s so much exciting rugby played by all teams this year, love this game and good luck to all in the semis and finals!!!
Great selection. Only change (possibly for sentimental reasons) is Courtney in the top 3 players of the season.
No mention of Tommy Reffell or Dafydd Jenkins?
Surprised that Ben Earl was by far England's best player in the 6 Nations but has been reasonably average for Saracens this season
It’s cus he plays 7 there, I think him playing for England shows his true position is 8. Another thought is England use him differently, so maybe that plays a factor?
@@alexandervanderpluym5400agreed
No mention for roots or vermulen is shocking.
COYQ!
Alex dombrand had a fair season give him a chance to see if he fit's in hopefully
Agree. He has worked hard and moved his game on this year. He is doing much more of the hard yards in addition to all the flashy stuff!
I know it's not related, but what would be your choice for a Barbarians 15. Right on the money with Henry Slade BTW, the guy is special.
I mean ben earl and Mitchell are the only ones i would have instead. glad to see sleighthulme getting recognition. He is lightening.
I agree with most of your chices but really Ben Earl should be there and Murcus Smith at fly half (thiugh Faz also deserves to be there).
Marcus Smith a poor3rd choice . Faz 5th choice.
I apologise immediately for what I have to say next. I just re-watched 2007 world cup match between England and SA (Furious). Although England were trounced lucy being a great tackler England were still ferocious and battled with what a recocnised as great team - if only not for the ...kin BOKS but just what a tournament. A Lot of talk about the best ever SA squad, I think John Smith's (our boys) just if or maybe equalised the undefeated run of tests that NZ held.
Think it’s tough to make final decisions for your choices until the final has been played however overall agree with most of your selections.
I think selecting now is fairest to all players - only 4 teams get another game. I think the official team of the season was picked last week for the same reason (not announced yet though). But totally get what you're saying.
After all the hype I was disappointed with Mercer didn’t show the leadership Gloucester needed
Tyrone Green is amazing but competition is tough in Springboks 15 position.
I hope they pick Will Porter for the first training squad... he's been the Quins find of the season.
Regarding Henry Slade, he has been outstanding for club but he was poor in the 6-nations for England and didn't do well with the new defensive structure. I would leave him at home for the tour...
big up Henry slade
Watched Henry Slade a few times now & he always gets amongst the Team during breaks in play especially when things aren't going great for the Chiefs. You can't buy this kind of leadership & experience on the pitch & is probably one reason why Exeter didn't tank this Season.
Henry slade has been so good 🎉
Can’t argue with Bath props after the job they did on Saints on Saturday. But surely if Langdon is 2OTS, he’s first on the plane…? Ok second after Cpt George. Getting into a Dylan Hartley argument here. Itoje and Ewels fair enough. Lawes GOAT two thumbs up. Evans, yep, breakdown nightmare. Mercer… hard to love Glos this season but ok. Probs Barbeary for me. Mitchell at 9 wins all day, but I’m biased there. Same for F Smith at 10, just growing and growing into a special player. Ollie 100%. JVR is a freak, no arguments. Just haven’t seen enough of Slade this season, but everyone seems to agree. IFW criminal not to….. finishing on a massive BOOOO for missing Furbs though. Green quality though. Good round up! 9+10 least agreeable for me, but that’s a class 15 all the same.
Imagine if Bath had played so well they topped the league? Would all the players come from Bath?
He seems like a top class player, so what are Zack Mercer’s weaknesses that possibly keep him out of the England team?
Attitude. Walzed off to France for a few years then came back expecting to be 1st choice 8 not expecting to have to earn the jersey.
Ben curry started and ended this season amazing just a shame he couldn’t of had a full season
Agreed!
You'd think from this selection Bath finished top of the table not Northampton. Personally I would have gone with Mitchell and Finn Smith as the 9/10 although Smith and Russell could go either way, I don't agree with the justification you had in another comment that Mitchell has started less games, that's really irrelevant as no scrumhalf plays for a whole game and when Mitchell is on the pitch he's just better. Curry and Evans are 50/50 for me at 7, poor Ben gets overlooked because his brother is the big name international it seems. Largely agree otherwise, Cole, Painter and Davison maybe pushing for the 3 jersey and agree that Furbank and Freeman lose out in the back 3 due to positional changes (with Furbank having played quite a lot at 10 and Freeman at 13).
At last,, someeone else recognises Heny Slade's value - I've been ranting about it for years. :-)
Problem is we have race quotas for the Boks and the guys ahead of him aren't crap either. Willemse, Gelant, Fassiii are the right hue and can walk the walk. Let Roux going will almost certainly get replaced by one of these guys
No no no mate.Baxter,Thacker,Collier front row. Then all Quins.Scrumhalf & backline all Saints 😅
Yes, unquestionably Henry Slade...........indeed, he missed the 2023 RWC - but he also missed the 2021 Lions (probably because he declined the jab).
There is nothing he cannot do. True, he’s lost a bit of top-end pace - which is why, if I were Rob Baxter, I’d play him at 10 for the next 2-3 seasons.
Interesting about Barend Johannes Janse van Rensburg - he would be a great acquisition for ENG.
Had forgotten about the Lions...quite right
Agree on Sladey for No. 1.....I just feel he has never quite lived up to his potential in an England shirt but may be that has been down to the style of play and game plan that England have employed to this point...
Langdon has been underrated , however Thacker is the best performer week in week out .
Tommy Rafell no 7
All thoae tight heads you mentioned are well over 30 years old
Only 2 players from the top side shows how balanced saints are, I massively disagree with the omission of Finn Smith and think him or Lawes should be player of the season. That is probably saints bias though.
Teamwork trumps skill nearly all the time and i agree that finn smith at the playmaking helm of it all deserves more credit
Courtney yes the best. Smith great but a long way to go.
Bath top … regular season ????
I feel like northampton is seriously underrepresented here. So here are some suggestions from them:
The difference between northampton last season and this season is down to 2 (3) players. Curtis Langdon sorting out the lineout (with courtney Lawes' support), and the scrum being sorted by trevor davidson!
Davidson is the best english tighthead and should go to NZ, only player who can hold a candle to Dan Cole and if will stewart could, Thomas Du Toit wouldnt be in the conversation for team of the season.
Alex Moon and Alex coles are probably the second best Pair in the league after Chessum and Martin, but fit and avaliable way more often.
I couldn't disagree with Zach Mercer more. All his best performances (as have gloucester's) have been in the challenge cup, not the premiership. Sam Graham has been so good this season. Never lower than a 7/10 and has played nearly every game. Really key player.
Mitchell and Fin Smith were mentioned in the video, and while it it will just come down to personal preference, Fin Smith has also elevated way beyond expectations. Russell has been great but its expected of him.
Fraser Dingwall is the only english player in the conversation at 12, that doesnt give him divine right tho over BJVR or Andre.
Tommy freeman ahould be in there somewhere! His problem is where, but that doesn't change the fact.
Finally in the season where he solved England's fullback problem, Wing Comander Furbank also won 9 games in a row as captain, setting up this end of season for saints. The difference between saints season and quins' season is that winning streak.
Obano doesn’t have the gas
Such a shame there is no mention of Alex Cole’s of Northampton. Both he and Alex Moon have been exceptional all season and I can’t understand why Tim seems to constantly not mention Coles. But, as well as Ewells has played, , both Coles and Moon have proved themselves. So please take the blinkers off Tim. Otherwise, your take on rugby is usually exemplary.
No Montoya, gorge martin or reffell
Refell yes, the best openside flank
Alex Dombrandt … such a improved No.8. Much tougher now. Doing the hard graft as well as using his handling skills.
Open side Ben curry . Scrum half spencer deserves it , but not at international level , he has a bad habit of slowing down quick ball when he plays for England .
If Ben Curry had played the whole season, definitely. He missed the middle third of the season, so Evans gets the nod.
There's no chance C.Eweles gets in that Deam Team. GREAT Leader from people's feedback but doesn't hit or pack enough Punch.
C. WIESE or A. COLES or HERBST 2nd Row will always be We're The Real Monsters are Needed Most !!
Is Luke Cowan Dickie no longer on England’s radar?
He was injured for some of the season & therefore didn't play much for Sale. On his return, he hasn't reached his former form.
Jasper Wiese is far better than Zach Mercer
Green defensively weak
Sarries have only won one legitimate title , they others are null and void and before all you Saracens fans have a meltdown , think of all the times in your life you’ve railed against cheats and liars , that’s what your club was cheats .
Not going to get into that. In that same era I'd point out they also won 3 Champions Cup titles, beating teams like Leinster, Toulon, Clermont and Toulouse with much bigger wage bills than them. They were an exceptional rugby team.
@@EggchasersRugby irrelevant . Exeter did it without breaking the cap , Exeter would also have had 4 prem titles , and no doubt more sponsorship revenue . Wray et al are cheats Sarries should have been wound up . And don’t state you’re not getting into it and then make a counter point . Do you agree sarries cheated ? The squad that won the European cup would not have been together had they not cheated , they got away with not even opening up the books .
@@EggchasersRugbydifficulty is we don’t and won’t ever know the amount Sarries cheated the cap. Lots of top international English players appear to have colluded in this without personal penal. Or I am I wrong?
@@MACCA0405
What international players colluded with breaking the cap ? How does that work ? Players salaries are a club issue
@@bashab3098
Certainly Sarries broke the salary cap, it is well documented and they were punished for it. Leicester did it too. Do you really believe that they have been the only clubs to have done that ? All the clubs have to skirt the rules to remain competitive including Exeter. They have all been at it at some point. Why do you think that the club owners that make up part of Premiership Rugby voted to suspend investigations into the financial affairs of other clubs. Sarries exposed by journalists, Leicester by whistleblower. None by Premiership Rugby. Don’t be so naive .
I accept that Sarries kept their team together by breaking the cap to win the European Cup has never been a level playing field in terms of player spending. Leinster who they beat had a similar player spend. On the day the best team won
Get real Alex Mitchell has been far better then Spencer.
Mitchell's great. He's only started 8 out of 18 Premiership games, so had to take that into account.
Pathetic selection ...Saints win more games than Bath but you have 5 bath players .. no firbank (most try assists), Davidson or Coles? Its up to you but you have to consider things better.
Furbank has been superb. He has also only started 3 Premiership games in 2024. Green started all 18 Prem games and been outstanding as well so deserves the nod in my mind. Davidson excellent too but Du Toit shades it (and 7 Premiership tries to his name is a rarity for a prop). Respect your passion and opinion, not sure "pathetic" is a fair assessment of mine :)
If england have so much talent why are they still trying to poach players
WTF? Ever heard of Weise, Chessum, Martin and Steward? Not one of them even meriting a mention! Your credibility is at an all time low!
If they are so good - why are Tigers bottom-but-two?
Steward can't even get in for England anymore, one trick pony
Bath finished top of regular season? Certain⚫️🟡🟢missing
