    --------------------------------------------
Disney Lorcana is a trading card game (TCG) that features Disney characters in both original and reimagined art styles that live in an all-new world with unique and magical gameplay.
The game is set in the rich and fantastical world of Lorcana, a combination of the words "lore" and "arcana". Players will take on the mantle of Illumineer, a powerful sorcerer, and band together Disney characters from Lorcana's "The Great Illuminary", a treasury of all Disney songs and stories ever made.
Disney Lorcana doesn't have an official player count on the packaging, but the designers have suggested 2-6 is an appropriate range.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

I can really see Disney Lorcana drawing in more people into the board gaming hobby who otherwise have only known games like Monopoly or LIFE growing up.

Been a Yu-Gi-Oh player since 2001. I've played competitively, I've judged tournaments and even organized tournaments. But the complexity and power creep has reach ridiculous levels. I'm eager to start Lorcana for a new experience and something I can quickly teach to kids and adults alike. Basically I'm hoping to recapture how YGO made me feel during its first 10 years. It helps I also love almost all things Disney.

Luckily Lorcana’s resource system should help with the balance. Yugioh forewent the resource system which kinda forces you to have insane power creep. I grew up with yugioh and loved it, never played competitively though.

I've been staying away from almost all others because of the resource systems. I hate that you have to draw a balance of resources and playable cards- I never do. The resource system in this game being playable cards that you play facedown makes it infinitely more playable

@@braedonmb Pretty much but you do have to be careful not to include too many uninkable cards. Seem common consensus is a max of 20% uninkable cards for stability.

one thing i like about this game over magic in the base design is that they separated how much your summons can progress your lore and how much they attack the opponent's summons for. that should give them more room to design summons that are both at one but not the other, whereas in magic a creature is either good at both killing other creatures and damaging the opponent's life, or neither

I was at Gen Con all 4 days and my brother got in line Thursday morning when it was pretty chaotic, but was able to get the booster packs and starter decks. We demoed the game on Friday and loved it, but heard the line started around 6pm Thursday night for the Friday opening, so we just figured it would be even crazier Saturday morning and didn’t want to wait 16 hours, but we noticed the line wasn’t too bad Friday night. My brother got in line around 5am and I got there around 5:50am. He was 97th in line and I was about 195. We got the player mats, themed sleeves and portfolios this time (on top of the boosters and starter decks).
I’m in the same boat as you - I love it right now, but time will tell. My sister-in-law collects the Disney pins, so I’m sure we’ll be collecting this Disney thing as well for however long they do this, but at least we can play with it. I never bought into any TCGs before, but I like the IP and the demo was fun so I was happy to buy it. I also demoed Star Wars Unlimited and might also buy into that one next year as well haha. So here we go. (Also I wasn’t able to say hi to you or Meg unfortunately, but I did run into Devon.) Love your content and honest opinions as always.

PS- I use to play MtG and enjoy the game, but have switched over to board games since I can play those at home with neighbor friends and still be present with the Mrs. and my kids. MTG requires you to be away from home for hours and hours to play at FNM or casual meetups. For this time in my life, board games have proven more convenient (and have given me some amazing experiences). I am unsure if I will ever go back to MtG since my board game group is growing older as I do and sharing the same life experiences, while the age gap between me and typical mtg players in FLGS is increasing.

Does look appealing. Don't Think it will beat the ONE Piece TCG for me though. Game is just so fun. My absolute favorite tcg atm. Always comes down to the wire and intense, with tons of variability thanks to how the avenues you have in choices from resources, countering and everything... This though will fill a more casual and accessible tcg space for me at least.
Personally Id rate my favorites being Battle Spirits Saga for hyper competitive/complexity, lorcana for casual/accessibility, and one piece tcg for a perfect mix of the two. Has the competitive tense ness to a decent degree, but its not overly complex overall and keeps a healthier amount of accessibility.
Magic is nice and all, but it has its problems and I am not a fan of rotating card pools that outdate my older cards and make them unplayable. I have this issue with pokemon as well, and hope it doesn't apply to lorcana. Yugioh has power creeped into oblivion, so fun, but it has just gotten a bit too out of hand. Had been lucky to play it when it was at a fairly healthy state, and have a large amounts of decks for it. Sad about it.
Glad we have some of these newer games giving us some freshness to the hobby.

I am into TCGs, but Lorcana doesn't do anything particularly new or exciting…except have a Disney license, which I'm middling on. I'll probably still pick up some because I like TCGs, and the Disney brand means I might be able to play it with a few people who wouldn't enjoy Magic or Keyforge, for example. But it'll also depend on how available the product is-it looks like set 1 might be hard to get our hands on, and I probably won't buy any set 2 if I can't get set 1 first.

I'm very surprised by how far a TCG can go by just copying Duel Masters with no twist (except the stats and damage I guess). It's a great entry point because Duel Masters is a great game, but I think that anyone "in the know" needs games to have more of an identity. Then again, a lot of TCG players I know still want to at least dabble in it because it's Disney, so what do I know.

It feels a lot like MTG, although I haven't played MTG in over 10 years. But the basics seem to be very similar. Ready(Untap) your cards and resources(Ink Wells), draw a card, Put a card down as a resource, play something but exerting(Tapping) your Ink Wells, attack(Challenge) or send a card on a quest to gain points(Lore). First to 20 wins. 60 Card limit Decks.

Agreed, the flow looked VERY familiar as an ex-MTG player. I'm rather disappointed that they added the Flying power from MtG (can only be attacked by other Flyers) but instead of actually using the term Flying, they used "Evasive." Like, what about being evasive means you're better at catching someone else evasive? Aladdin was evasive and the guards weren't but they still could chase him down and wear him out.

I like this game. It has Key forge's gameplay (tapping creatures to get closer to win condition/ attacking creatures with other creatures) and WoW TCG's mechanic of turning cards in hand into resources. The one thing they'll need to add in upcomming sets is different ways to win the game, besides lore. (mill, alternate victory condition)

    • @abesapien9930

@@abesapien9930 Not exactly. When you tap to attack in MTG your opponent can still prevent the damage by blocking with creatures. Unless you're playing a bunch of Prodigal Sorcerers. In Keyforge if you reap with a creature to get aember you get that aember, almost nothing your opponent can do against that. And besides: magic uses the same thing (damage) to advance the win condition and deal with creatures while Keyforge and Lorcana use different ones: You can ahve a creature that's good at challenging but not at questing, while in MTG a strong creature will beat up creatures and players.

Simple rules might make the game easy to learn and play with your kids but this game is far too simple with no interaction between players to be long-lasting. I have 15 different dead CCGs in my basement who all tried to appeal to different crowds of people and it's the companies who produced them that gave up on them after sales dropped after six months. The hype is there now but will players still be after it when there are no new cards for a while and competitive players wreck the game by min-maxing and figuring out how to win. There needs to be a competitive scene with company support and this is all on Ravensburger to do and not Disney. The only reason that Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon, and Magic the Gathering have lasted this long is that the company producing the cards knows what it takes to keep fans buying their products every three or four months. The looming lawsuit over who owns the game will also surely cause it to die a quick death.

He did that but Upper Deck was taking too long to release it so he took that exact design to Ravenburger and they just slapped a Disney theme on it and it became Lorcana. Upper Deck has all of the files and owns the game design and that’s why they are suing. It shouldn’t matter if it’s just a bunch of mechanics but how they are all put together to form a unique game. If that’s the case someone could exact copy Ruins or Arnak or Earth or any other board or card game and just change the theme of the game and boom have a cheap instant hit. Lorcana is not a unique game design but is just a stolen rethemed copy of the game the UD owns not Ryan Miller.

Is buying packs with unknown contents considered gambling? With a product like Disney the market majority target is kids. Is pulling the slot machine handle hoping to get that rare card a good thing? Certain countries have laws regarding gambling and kids. Does Lorcana solve the issue with defined content packs (You will get micky mouse card X if you buy this pack)? And what are your thoughts on TCG's, the randomness of packs, and how that might impact the target audience of kids with Lorcana?

Honestly I'm hugely impressed by the design, Magic is absolutely bloated and they've done a few small things to clean it up and set up a good backbone. Remove colour mana with multiuse cards, simplified combat, replace life with Lore (and hence also fix multiplayer) and get rid of mid turn counters/interrupts which adds texture but is just not nessasary...it all promotes faster more streamline play whilst giving the same core (but different) choice and making it assessible for a much wider audience. I'd say it feels about 25% as complex as magic, plays 50% quicker and retains 80% of that "crunchiness" (im talking about the system, more complicated cards will come) so a great tradeoff.

It's an entry level TCG aimed at kids. The gameplay is nothing special. The Disney IP is huge (despite all the damage they've done to themselves the last several years), collectability is very high with plenty of chase cards, and it's the first set (just like Magic and Pokemon first sets, right?) so the demand is huge. I expect the popularity to wane after a few years while the big 3 continue.
As a board gamer and former TCGer (Magic, L5R among others), the gameplay isn't enough to hook me. I'd rather use my money I would have spent (2 boxes per release) on large Kickstarters, an LCG or two, and board games that I know will hit the table.
