Seeing houses that we have lived at over the years and the gardens that our family planted and created is such a buzz to see years later. A whole row, awesome
steven rowson thanks Steven. I need to start digging through the mountains of actual photos (printed), and find trees from years past to make growth comparisons.
I heard that they are common in London because they shed their bark which was useful because back in the days of coal being burnt in every fireplace across London, every surface would be covered in soot but these trees would stand out as a little oasis of nature against the grime of the city.
Wow. I wish the UK gov was so proactive on tree protection! :) England have tree protection orders on very few trees. Nice info on thinning, chopping, species differences and the advantages of following tree progress year after year after year. Knowledge is definitely as important as experience for sure.
This type of tree management is very popular on street trees in cities in the UK, London plane and lime are 2 species that we often see topped and then managed on a cycle of cutting back to knuckles every few years.....these species seem to be able to deal with this form of management and as long as the cycle of cutting is maintained. The benefit of this form of management would be relatively low risk trees but high costs associated in onging management.
patrick baldwin When a species that gets too large for a given space is planted then pollarding works, but it ends up being additional maintenance. If a proper species is selected, then the tree can grow slowly to become a quality tree without the expense of annual tree work.
I grew up in a New England town with a large Portuguese population. Many neighbors would pollard their deciduous trees to keep them from getting too tall. I guess it's a more common practice in Europe. I was always aghast by how ugly it looked.
The london plane is a really interesting tree. I heard it's the most common urban tree (as in along roads) in europe. All the way from warm spain up to cold sweden it seem to do fine in places with limited root space and barely any water at all.
I know its probably not of huge interest but can you talk about pruning limbs from a conifer and why the limbs never grow back? Maybe provide some basic info about how conifers are different from hardwood trees?
Personally I think that cities and towns should rarely be telling you what to do with your trees that is not to say that there isn't a time and place for it.
Blair, I was busy with family concerns. When I finally got back to confirm tha address it seemed to be gone. So I tried the one I thought I remembered. Did my note come through?
Lots of common names are used differently in different areas. In California, these trees are commonly called Sycamore. Listen to the explanation within the video.
Man! I watch dozens of your videos - VERY RESPECTFULLY - and I give a peep, and can't catch a break??????😂...... Bottom Line: Sycamore and London Plane are two First cousins....they can kiss....they are legally even allowed to marry.......
arboristBlairGlenn I practice fly fishing as well it is so captivating.over here in Québec ice fishing is losing ground is not as popular as it used to be. but summer is verry popular as Québec as th ou sands of Lakes and rivers.🐟
Blair! please throw together a video of some of the fish you've caught fly fishing! trees and fishing are my passions so im glad luc asked that. I've been wanting to get into fly fishing but its an expensive venture. Luc goodluck on the ice! its getting sketchy with all this warm weather and rain. (from Ottawa!) love quebec.

Thanks for the video.
Duncan MacKenzie sometimes I think I might be preaching to the choir on some of my topic choices. Hope this video was useful.

Peter Brown I do enjoy the U.K., thanks

Love your videos but most of the time you record facing the sun and can't see the beautiful tree otherwise keep the good information coming

TheDisorderly1 good subject. If I find an example that I can talk about, I will do so.

Damon Reuning I see both sides of the issue. Real estate values are out of control and trees impact those values.

Thank you. Got it.
That's AMAZING that sycamore trees seem to handle poor prune jobs! (Although they should still be pruned by someone like you!)
Precious Pecans you will like this collection of sycamore grafted trees
