- Amaryllis is easily my favorite blooming plant inside the home during the cold winter months. So to go one year without any blooms on your plant is a very sad year indeed. Many times we are able to get our bulbs to flower the first year but after that only foliage seems to grow. In this video I show the top three reasons that will keep your Amaryllis from performing like it should. With these tips in mind you can encourage your Amaryllis to rebook every single year for many years to come. #amaryllis #hippeastrum #amarilis

I want to say thank you I followed your suggestions after blooming I cut my flower stem I fertilized all summer early fall let it dry out cut the leaves down covered it in a cool place and my amaryllis is blooming it's absolutely gorgeous I'm so happy thank you Devin
Wonderful! That makes me thrilled to hear
Thank you for this informative video! I also love you're energy! 😁 You've got a new subscriber.
Welcome!!
I’m here in CA and our summer extended longer than I wanted. If I’m lucky, I’ll get my Amaryllises to bloom in late January or February!
I’d just leave them outside and let them bloom on their own schedule!
A great recap, thanks Devin. I've just taken my amaryllis out of the wine cellar (dark and a fairly constant 9°C) and into the 'sun parlour' (bright sunshine and 19-21°C) and they seem to be sending up flower buds...
Beautiful! Sounds like you know what you’re doing 🙌
Devon I have Ameryllis bulbs from last year. In mid August I pulled them let them dry remove the soil trim the leaves trim and the roots put them in a paper bag and put them in vegetable bin of my refrigerator. They stay there until the second week of November. I replanted them with a little bit of bonemeal in the soil; put them out on my covered driveway in bright sunlight. Tried to keep the soil temperature above 70°.(I live in zone nine)
I checked them to see that the soil was just barely moist and watered if they needed. Recognizing Here it is mid December, last year‘s bulbs only have leaves no flowers help!
It may continue to take time to flower! Don’t give up yet
Hi Devin good information about the beautiful amaryllis plants . I have red and pink colors soon they will bloom . I wish l could get wihte color and red with white because none of these colors in nurseries in my country .Have anice day .
Best of luck!
Thank you for this very helpful video.
I received my amyrlls as a gift last year, and they were in bloom. However, a year later, I repotted them and have not been able to get the stem to grow tall and sturdy. It's winter now here, should I move them to a cool dark place now (the air is drier) or should I do that in summer (the air is a little, very little humid).
I’d just allow it to live its cycle out now where you have it
Have you ever tried “chipping “ a bulb to get babies? Do you have a video? I bought some clearance bulbs this year just to try chipping, but I’m not sure WHEN to do it? Do I wait until next winter when they go dormant?
Your Exotic Star is gorgeous! It is one of my favorites!
I haven’t do that but I will do it this spring/early summer, which would be the best time to do it
so I'm guessing that just cutting the leaves and hiding it behind the computer monitor instead of it being in the window is why it didn't produce a flower this year. I kept it in the same pot and as soon as i noticed leaves growing i put in right back into window where it was last year and it has grown just a large, leaves are 18"-24" long, sadly no flowers ever grew. I also bought a pink and white bulb this year, like the one shown in the video and it never flowered either. So i feel better that even the professional growers don't always get it right.
Mine typically bloom closer to March so hold on to yours, they may still bloom
great tips! our amaryllis bloomed beautifully last year, my first year having them. i put them into brown paper bags in our unheated garage at the end of august (nj zone 7a) and we had an unusually warm fall though october so i dont think it got below 57 in there =0!! we have beautiful leaves now but no flower stalks!! can we try again?!
When the nights get back above 50 move them outside and let them cycle thru outside summer and autumn. Then let them remain outdoors until nights dip closer to 40. That will give them a few weeks experiencing the cooler temps. Skip the garage
I will get the stalk and flower blooms, beautiful, but no leaves like ones in your video. After the flowers die, it then starts to produce leaves . What is this about ? Also, i have a nice seed pod but it didn't have a chance to 'ripen and split' as cats knocked over the flower stalk. Will this seed pod still dry out and be ok to plant the seeds? Thank you!
definitely worth trying for the seeds! Amaryllis are very variable in terms of how and when they produce flowers and foliage
Not sure what the timeline/ growing season is but my plant is just now growing a long singular leaf. It’s seems it blooms in the spring, but that is probably my own fault . What is the preferred growing season ?
They do typically bloom in spring or early summer but many bulb sellers condition the bulbs so they bloom around Christmas time
Just took two amaryllis out of the wine cellar to break dormancy and discovered that the neck on one has rotten looking spots. I poked around and even sliced more of the neck off and there are still brown soft areas. One bulb even had a lot of mushy pinkish gunk in the neck area. Both bulbs feel firm otherwise. I've never seen this before and have had amaryllis for years. Are they goners? Have 4 more in the cellar which I havent checked yet. Almost afraid to look :(
Hmm if they are mushy then it is unlikely they will make it
My amaryllis hasn’t rebloomed in several years, however it has developed 4 small offshoot bulbs. I’ve potted them up separately. Getting ready to let them go dormant & this year I’ll put them in the unseated, attached garage. Any other suggestions?
Yeah, put them outside in the summer next year
Thank you. Should I take the bulb out of the ground? My amirllas are about 5 years old now. Last year and this year they didn't bloom. They stayed in the same spot all this time.
Hmm yes if they haven't bloomed in two years then I would dig them up. Normally if grown in the ground they should bloom around May
I stored mine in a cardboard box in the garage for 12 weeks. We have a heater that keeps our garage at 6 degrees Celsius through the winter. (In zone three, chilling them is not a difficulty). I took them out of their pots in the fall and put them in peat moss to store . Should I have stored them without the peat? Only leaves came up, but the bulbs look healthy.
The peat should not have affected it. Keep growing them out and place them outside in the summer and they will likely bloom then this year. Try storing them 16 weeks in total darkness later this year
@@plantvibrations Thanks. I had them out last summer but will go with longer chilling this year. Do you let them die back naturally in the fall, or just cut them back?
I followed your tips (thank you!) & took my ameryllis out of the basement after 12 weeks. Its been out (still in a pot of soil) for about 3 weeks but its just growing very slowly? No stalks or foliage..just greening at the top of the bulb. Should I put it back in the basement again and hope for Spring blooms or take it out of the soil maybe & see if that does the trick? Thank you!
Give it more time! Place it in the warmest location possible
thank you! Will do! @@plantvibrations
I do all you said ( stored in my barn for months) and all I got was leaves. I also fed at the time one on line grower said
Try placing them outside this spring and summer and see if it encourages them to bloom
Give them potassium rich fertilizer to encourage flowering :)
What time if year do I need to put my plant into darkness/coolness for those 12-15 weeks??
Autumn
What time of the year do I put my plant in dark/cool for 12-15 weeks?
Plz see other response
January. Amaryllis didn't bloom last Christmas. The leaf finally died back last week. Do I leave the roots on b4 putting it in the crawl space? Should I wrap it in newspaper? 12 weeks dormant will be mid-January. Last year I had it in a South facing window and it didn't bloom. Maybe Ididn't have 7 enough bulb showing. I could put it in a north facing when it's done being dormant. Comments?
The lighting sounds good in south window. Was the area where they were dormant relatively cool? It’s best if it is quite cool
One blooming and the other leafy. Both stood in the same location in the basement.? The leafy plant is older. Any recommendations
Place outside for the summer
Loved the video however being new to Amaryllis last year I didn’t know how to care for them. After the flowers were done blooming the crazy leggy-ness of the leaves drove me crazy and I cut them. Then I stored in the basement at around 65 and now that I brought them back the leaves aren’t even coming back but the tips that I cut are green. My main question is what now? Do I toss it? Start dormancy over in a cooler spot? Just don’t know where to go now and I can’t find anything online.
Hi! my best suggestion is to just let them be and allow them to bloom on their own schedule. I personally don't have a basement that gets cool enough to really give them the dormancy that they need so I just let them grow on their own cycle. Many times that means flowers around spring time for me
I put my in refrigerator bottom 3 months gave them everything they need before now only leaves
December 2022 I bought 2 new amaryllis for me and my daughter. Mine flowered, and had leaves, her's did Not flower but had 2 nice leaves. I thought she might have watered the bulb too much before it started growing causing it not to bloom? She kept her's in her sun room all summer and I put mine outside in semi sun all summer. In October I cut the leaves back on both and put in cold place (first in cool garage then it got a little warm in there so I moved to the fridge to keep cool for a week and then back to cool garage for about 9 weeks total). Took out and planted in pots indoors and mine is blooming now with no leaves yet. Her's still didn't bloom this year. Do you know if it will ever bloom if it didn't bloom first year?
I’d suggest she put hers outside. That temperature change is essential
@@plantvibrations Thanks. Her sun room was nice and warm all summer but I will put both outside with actual sun this summer and see what happens.
So once you get only leaves do you have to let them grow till they die, or can you put them in a dark space and get them to die off right away.
You want to let them grow to absorb suns energy
When I bring my amaryllis in in August, is it better to store them in the pot of soil or take them out and store them loose?
Whichever is more convenient
When do I put my plant in the dark/cool for 12-15 weeks
About 4 months before youd like them to bloom
I guess I shouldn’t have tossed mine out after all I got was tons of leaves. In zone 9-1/2, it’s almost impossible to find a cool place for 12 weeks. Maybe a mini fridge with the temp turn up to the least cool setting?
Yes that would be my recommendation
This is my first yrs growing an amaryllis, It was a huge bulb, I planted it correctly (I think) it has now 2 tall stems with a few flowerheads about to burst open on each but, there are only 2 very short leaves squeezed between the 2 stems they are about 3 inches long and seemed to have stopped there.. is there a reason? thanks for any insight into this
that is totally normal. many times the leaves won't really start until after the flowers have finished.
@@plantvibrations Thanks! have a very merry christmas!
My amaryllis has bloomed for about 6 years in a row. This year, lots of foliage again. But no blooms. I did not change anything. Any ideas on how to get it to bloom now
Hmm maybe it’s time to repot with new soil?
How would I do that in the Caribbean, I several Amaryllis, and not one has rebloomed
Hmm the only solution I can think of would be to put them in a dark paper bag in the fridge for 8 weeks. I don’t think your climate gets cool enough for them to bloom if grown outside
Will amaryllis mother bulb bloom again after keeping the pollinated flowers on it?
They can send up various flowering stems in one season
My first question is how much of my amaryllis should I have exposed above the soil? Then my next question is what time of the year should I be putting my amaryllis in the dark and in the cool temperatures for that 12 to 15 weeks? Thank you sincerely, Deanna 🌺
Please see response in other video comment
I had them in cool place for 4 months, now adequate light, watered, but just leaves. One started to grow a stalk then stopped. What next? Thank you
How cool was it?
@plantvibrations in the 40's.
Do you have to pull the bulb out of the soil ? I can’t tell if that’s what you were doing during the cold season
You don’t have to but you can if desired
I've had the worst luck growing Papillio They slowly grow foliage then... just melt. most likely from too much moisture.. Tried 3 different times (they aren't cheap) but NOT giving up
Mine have bloomed at the most random times like late summer, I have no idea why lol
Why is the flower bud is small? Thanks.
Yours is small? Is it just starting? Sometimes they take a while to reach full size
I bought 3 plants this year at Home Depot and only one of them seems to be blooming. One has a shoot that looks like it will bloom into a flower and the other 2 appear to just be growing leaves. If I had known more about these flowers, I would have only choose ones that look like they are going to bloom. Am I just being impatient?
It's hard to say. but what is factual is that the bulbs from places like Home Depot are often not properly prepared before you purchase them and dont alway produce great results. the quality of their bulbs is the lowest out there
i have had decent luck with my HomeDepot & Walmart Amaryllis bulbs. Biggest challenge was mold from the cocunut coir that was fixed with TeaTree essential oils as well as cinnamon sprinkled on top of the dirt. I'm going to try small amount of fertilizer. I also realized I didn't quite have enough of the bulbs above the dirt... will remove a small amount out.
Good news...2 of the 3 bulbs have bloomed! The one I kept for myself is still only growing leaves. I will try to remove some of the dirt around the bulb to see if that helps! Thanks! @@joybird2528
I planted a bulb in April 2023 and all I have gotten is leaves. I did plant it correctly.
Sometimes they can take longer than two months to flower
I have a amaryllis that has never bloomed. I had 4 bulbs and planted them the same way I always do. There is green at the top as it it is starting to start to bloom. But no stalk or leaves have appeared. Been in the pot for 4 months and nothing. Just green what looks like the start of a stalk about 1 to 2 inches high. HEIP ..
Can you place outside in the sun all summer long? Leave it outside till night dip into 30s next fall
why is my fully grown amaryllis not blooming, I live in the tropics
Perhaps not long enough cold period for them
Why did he cut his hairs , he was soooooo cute
Because he is a boy.
When do I put my plant in the dark/cool for 12-15 weeks
