I'd say it's smart because India (a developing country) buys weapons from both Russia (minus sanctions, India also buys oil from Russia) and the US while maintaining excellent trade and diplomatic relations with both the countries. India was smart to reject the western narrative of "with us or against us" focusing on the needs of its own population as opposed to engaging in side picking and war.. Pretty darn smart!
