  • I'll show a cervical adjustment (chiropractic adjustment for the joints of the spine in the neck) and some Graston Technique to relieve pain and tightness for levator scapulae strain with accompanying stiffness and pain in the upper back and neck. Levator scapula pain is a common complaint in a chiropractor's office, PT's office, or even for an MD. The levator scapula muscle can be strained and painful from an acute injury, like a weightlifting or exercise injury, repetitively strained from working at a computer or desk, or develop because of poor body positioning and posture.
If you're experiencing a levator scapulae injury or discomfort, the good news is that the vast majority of these complaints can be relieved with what's called "conservative" care. Chiropractors and PTs will typically use chiropractic adjustments (or spinal manipulation,) soft tissue treatment like a myofascial release or Graston Technique IASTM, heat, and therapeutic exercises as a treatment to help you recover. These treatments are regarded as very safe and carry a very minimal chance of adverse events or side effects. Passive treatments like chiropractic adjustments or spinal manipulation can help improve stiffness and poor joint motion while relieving pain and make it more comfortable to proceed with corrective exercises to create strength and mobility in the affected region.
If you're having additional complaints that seem to come along with levator scapulae pain, I'd advise you to see a chiropractor or PT for evaluation and make sure you get a complete picture of what the issue is. Sometimes levator scapulae pain can mimic a cervical disc herniation which often responds to a different set of exercises and a slightly different treatment.
