***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out a new video every Wednesday morning! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I buy most of my seeds from Migardener here in Michigan. Luke has his UA-cam channel and I get so much information from him on growing here in our Michigan climate. Thanks Kate for sharing your thoughts and ideas on buying seeds.i enjoy your videos very much 😊
Thanks for sharing! It's great to have a local person to turn to for information!
I would dump all those "toss" seeds into a plot where you can water then turn your goats or chickens in that plot in the fall to graze on whatever came up....or a deer plot?
I use Johnny's for a LOT of my seeds too. I love the larger packages available at good prices. I'm in zone 5a/4b and we have a quite short but hot growing season. Very awkward climate.
Your growing climate sounds a bit like our, short - hot - awkward. Sometimes too much rain at the wrong time or not enough.
@@VenisonforDinner exactly like that LOL
You can grow beets and turnip seeds and harvest bacon and pork chops! Fun fact some city folk don’t know… 😂
You are too funny.
Sunshine Farm Seeds is a BC company from Kelowna. We have had good germination success and found them cheaper than Westcoast. And they have a cool model of working with adults with developmental disabilities.
Thank you so much for sharing the name to that seed company here. Love that business model.
I use johnys and Bakers Creek love them both! I'm zone 12a I believe....Caribbean life. I'm starting more seeds, too. And have tomatoes, peppers, spaghetti and acron squash, and cucumbers planted now.
Oh wow you are in a zone x4 compared to us! That must be amazing to grow there.
If you like squash try sweet lightening. I'm zone 3 northern MN and it grows great, great tasting and is prolific. Stored for a year for me. Also if you like cantalope try MN midget.
Ohhhh sounds right up our alley!! Thanks!
Thanks for bringing us along for your seed order! Glad to know I’m not the only one just kinda flying by the seat of my pants with the seeds and garden.
You and me both!
I love Johnny's! Fedco is also a good, ethical company for Northern growers with great varieties!
They're my go-to's also!
A fun thing to do with seeds i dont want is to give them to kids or spread them in the pigpen, they dont eat seeds and they sprout and are a fun experiment. I am ordering from Berlin seeds. Thanks for the note about west coast seeds.....i was considering ordering from there. one tip i found for hard to grow herbs is to buy the plants. I find better luck with that. For deer you could also order a groundcover mix
Thanks for sharing those ideas. It would be so fun to see what would come up in the pigpen.
These are not Canadian, but Territorial out of Oregon and Pinetree out of Maine have both worked well for us. Zone 5 can be borderline 4.
I think my grandma used to buy territorial seeds!
Fedco is another great seed company
Awesome! I've not heard of that one.
I ordered from Johnnys and really like them BUT holy crap their shipping to Canada is INSANE. Although like your sister, I ordered bulk and have lots left for a few years.
I think it's the only way to go if you live in Canada.
I know it’s too late for this years garden but I recommend T&T seeds out of Manitoba. I’m in Northern Saskatchewan, zone 3, last frost date June 10th, first frost September 15th and have used T&T seeds for 20 years. Even with my market garden. Large packages available and I believe they grow most if not all their own seed. 10% off orders prior to Feb 15th, orders in CAD. Can get most everything you want to grow there.
Also been using Salt Spring Seeds and Heritage Harvest for more rare or special medicinal herb seeds (also ancient grains!) This summer, I will save some of my chamomile seed and mail it to you. It has been self sowing for 4 years now and does great. It may work for your space. I’m pretty sandy but have added barnyard amendments to help along.
This is great to hear about T&T seeds! I will definitely look at them for next year!! Thank you for sharing that. Looking forward to camomile seeds!!
Rainbow Seeds is local to me. They do grow their own seeds and do larger sets but not large large bulk amounts. I have had amazing germination from their seeds. They are a smaller company but are also priced well...
They sound like a great seed company. It's just hard to order from different companies because of all the individual shipping costs. Otherwise I would love to support the smaller companies.
This year I’m growing all new things just for funsies. Love this time of year!
I love that!!
Thanks for this video! I don't need any seeds this year (have sooooo many!) so this felt like I was shopping for seeds! Two thoughts: I have good luck with treating kale as a perennial. Put a layer of straw over it before winter hits. The second year it will go to seed and you will never need to buy kale seeds again! It's great animal feed. Second: Give the Mexican Sour Gherkin a try. They are so much fun to snack on while working in the garden! Kids love them. Love your videos
Thanks for the great Kale tip. I agree it is fun to "look through" someone's seeds and seed shopping. Might just have to try those Gherkins! They sound very kid friendly. Thanks of much for joining us here!
I've even pickled the Cucamelons. Kids love them! Me too. I snack on them all the time.
This was fun! Ty Kate for sharing. See you next week.😊❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’d say that mug is cobalt blue. Very pretty
I’ve heard good things of salt spring seeds!
Yes they are great! It's what my mom mainly uses....and it's also where she lives.
Love rainbow seed Co based out of Eastern Canada
Small family run company
Thank you for sharing that seed company's name.
Good morning, Kate! I use the same organizer for my buttons, my seeds are much more of a mess😂 zone 9 and I can't grow chamomile either. I love the new mugs and can't wait until they go on sale. I hope you and the family have a great day! I love that the kids get vegetable treats, my parents would do that as well.
Well as you can see, while I have the organizer it doesn't exactly always get into said organizer!!
New mug launch is this Thursday at 4 pm EST
Oooh and don't forget different soils! My native soil is acidic clay so i let strawberries spread themselves everywhere to suppress weeds - especially on paths but have to build soil to grow brassicas
Maybe you could have some hanging baskets with acidic soil mix for a few precious strawberry plants in the greenhouse. Mine climbed into forgotten hanging baskets in a greenhouse with bugger all potting mix left
Yes, you are right....soil plays a HUGE role in growing food.
Kate gift this seeds you don’t want to someone. Enjoyed this one although I enjoy all of your posts
True...good idea. Thank you for joining us here.
I choose diff companies for the same thing. That way I discover which I prefer. Cheers to the 2024 growing season!❤ Everwilde in Cali is a new seed company for me and I definitely love Sandhill Preservation in Iowa.
It is fun to try different varieties. Thanks for sharing the names of those two seed companies
Hi Kate! Zone 6b, I’m in Northern Idaho, right below Canadian border! Just place my Johnny’s seed order yesterday and ouch 400$!!! I only buy heirloom and organic. Being able to save true heirloom and organic because we aren’t down with toxic pesticides! Congratulations on the pregnancy! Subscriber for awhile now!😊
I love hearing about the ethos behind everyones different seed purchases. We are definitely not down with pesticides either. Thank you so much for joining us here!!
Hey Kate! Not sure if you have heard of them but I've used True Leaf Market for quite a few seeds..they are out of Utah here in the US but I do believe they ship to Canada.
No I haven't heard of them. Thank you for sharing that name here.
I have settled on Johnny’s as well. They aren’t cheap but the bulk seeds save me money and they consistently perform the best. I also decided to take a break from heirloom. If I have a variety that does well that’s fine and I try to seed save but cucumbers for example I have had year after year crop failure. We have an awful blight that the heirlooms just can’t hold their own against. Last year I bought some hybrid varieties and had a stellar crop. I decided if shtf we won’t be able to grow cucumbers anyways thanks to the blight but for now while I can get hybrid seeds we will happily eat bountiful cucumber harvests and pray it doesn’t come to that. I did have one fail with Johnny’s last year on bolero carrots. They have been my go to for probably the last 10 years because they are so tough and store so well and I’m very familiar with their shape. Last year we bought pelleted bolero from Johnny’s and they grew short fat carrots. Very tapered to a point. Nothing at all like the normal straight very cylindrical shape of a bolero carrot. I was disappointed but they still did ok and this year I ordered new seed even though I had leftovers.
I agree with you....we can't always grow our 'dream seeds', we have to plant what will grow within our location/weather/soil/availability. Looks like you've done your fair share of working that out!!!
Hello Kate, Hope you are well. I don't garden but have heard a lot about Johnny's seed and proven winners seeds. Maybe you'll have luck with those. It's worth a try.
Thank you for sharing the Proven Winners name. I only ever see plant starts from them.
Migardener!!!
Well there's a new one for me!
I have tried to grow Dill so many times here in Courtney BC it never seems to grow
My mom lives on Salt Spring and she finally got it growing by giving up. Now it comes up all over every spring.
I'd love to be able to pop over for tea n chat by the stove and eat a fantastic grill cheese made with sourdough with you.. u are more organized then I but my garden is tiny compared to yours❤❤
Wouldn't that be fun!
I cannot find a way to order the mugs! I subscribed to your site and have looked fir sis ceramics on line. Not happening!
Here is the link to Sift Ceramics where I collaborate with Keri on the mugs.
siftceramics.com/
She is always making mugs etc, but we won't have another Venison For Dinner mug launch until late summer I think. She does sometimes have some seconds for sale too.
Thanks!
I was spelling it Sip! Thanks. I subscribed!
How do I order the new mugs!!!
The mug launch will go public this Thursday at 4 pm EST
Question, how do you keep wildlife from absolutely destroying your crops year after year… we have a deer overpopulation in our area, and they’re HUNGRY buggers.
We deer fenced when we lived where there was lots of deer in the garden, now we dont have that problem and we have dogs.
I started to give some of the seeds I want to throw out to the chickens.
Great idea.
