This cardiologist's approach has my ultimate respect--I am encouraged by what was shared--Thanks Dr Berg. I really like what he says about CIMT and calcium scores, LDL and risk, and an emphasis on diet instead of treating a risk factor. Great Interview--as a Pharmacist, I am also struggling with some of the treatment modalities and the practices encouraged by professional organizations and certification organizations. Many of our guidelines and continuing education is heavily influenced by drug companies who sponsor the organizations and create the content we use. This is not a post to demonize 'big Pharma'. Solutions to health is multifaceted and I don't want to rule out medication when appropriate. This cardiologist gives me hope that I can redefine my professional purpose as I respectfully acknowledge emerging information on the effectiveness of low-carb (fat fuel burning) diets to promote health. I am frustrated with the promotion of drugs to compensate for our over-fed-nutrient poor insulin spiking diets. The future of health is low carb, fasting, exercise, microbiome health, adequate sleep and stress management--not a better drug or medical procedure.

Excellent commentary. I think as this type of information becomes more widespread and inevitably accepted, medical professionals will have no choice but to acknowledge it and implement it into the their patients' regime. However, we're already seeing pushback from those who have a vested interest in the status quo.

Get an education on herbs, and nutrition like Dr. Berg. If you stay as a pharmacists, know that some people just want to pop pills and don't want to change their habits. It's frustrating. I'm an LVN and have experienced this.

As a nurse, I was also blown away, confused, then angry that I'd never heard of Keto before. It was hard to change the ideas that I was taught. It's great to see a Doctor open to the info. Now, all the nurses I work with are on Keto and have been for a least a year and all are doing great! Oh an Keto for 3 years for me.

To come to a place in his life where he had to reevaluate all he believed to be true, admit that what he thought was true wasn't, and to now help people in a world that is still fighting a healthier way of life and eating, is frankly, amazing! I applaud you both! Thank you!

My cardiologist, even with my lab work being amazing, tried swaying me to a higher carb, 6 meal a day "heart" healthy diet, even though she knows and uses keto for herself. She also tried convincing me to go back into meds saying that heart disease can never be reversed and that I can and probably still have a heart attack again, if I'm not taking meds and eating how she recommends. I had a heart attack when I was eating similar to what she is pushing and I feel so much better with keto, IF and prolonged fasting. I'm even looking at flip flopping between carnivore, keto and just low carb, just to keep flexible. Thank you for everything you have been doing!

    • @sykotikmommy

@Steven L. I sure can. They had no idea based on those numbers though, because I was always in a "good" range. Triglycerides are 45, HDL was 74 and LDL was 100. This was only in January.

    • @sykotikmommy
      @sykotikmommy 5 років тому +1

@Steven L. I only just started eating keto, off and on in November. They do say that the numbers that they go by aren't exactly the right thing to look at now. It's extremely interesting.

Keep up the good work, I encourage you not to get "the shots" which cause vascular inflammation, and keep proving them wrong :)

Great information! I love how studies are now able to reflect how heathy Keto can improve our lives. My PCP was concerned as my LDL numbers jumped way up, but my already high HDL was even higher and I told him that I expected it. I'm 50 + lbs down and went from a sz 16 to a sz 6 back to my pre baby weight. I would not change a thing and don't regret it. I feel healthy, happy and my arthritis flairs are gone. People are shocked when they see me and find out I'm almost 50 yrs of age as they think I'm in my early thirties. 😂😎

Fantastic interview! Several months ago I watched an interview of another cardiologist who saw the light and switched to functional medicine, successfully reversing heart disease with keto diet & supplements. Gave an example of a patient: a surgeon forced to stop working, very weak heart function, on a heart transplant list. Today he's feeling great, running several miles a week, and back working as a surgeon. Nature is amazing, a wonderful blessing.

Oops, are we not supposed to? I work in Mental Health/addictions so we have to do more teaching since they rarely see our doctor. I've been teaching my pts about it if they ask, usually from seeing me drop all the weight. Most the nurses and support staff I work with are on keto as well after they saw my success. What's sad is that I see some of the same addiction issues with sugar as I do with drug/alcohol addicts. When I got the Keto flu, I experienced some of the same symptoms that my heroin detoxers exhibit. It really opens the eyes. I realized I shouldn't be eating anything that causes me to detox when I stop. Keto on!

Think about the number of times over the last 50 years they’ve been wrong, especially about diet. It is refreshing when one finds a doctor who is willing to admit what they don’t know or what they’ve been wrong about in the past.

Impressive. Thank you Dr. Berg and Dr. Scher - I listen to both of you every week. I choose my personal doctor's carefully - I highly respect that they're the experts on medicine - but I'm the expert on myself, my body, and my life. If they don't show respect for that, they don't deserve my money, time and attention. Humility and desire to learn for the good of their patients and their practice should be a quality in every doctor - I've found it more the exception than the rule. I'll always respect that quality in our medical practitioners. It's refreshing and encouraging to see it here.

Maybe the fact of higher LDL is also our heritage? We are all family- wise, from Prussia? And our relatives have always lived into our 90's...but I have noticed, in the recent 40-50 years, with statins, our folks are dying earlier!

GMA just covered a very small segment and said that on a low carb diet it may effect the heart but they never said how much of a low carb diet effects the heart. A moderate low carb diet was just fine though. Getting enough low carb dark leafy green vegetables was mentioned but they did push the grains.

What about the measuring of the C-reactive protein? That's a simple blood test and it's supposed to measure heart disease risk as it measures inflammation in the body. Mine was very high before I went on keto and went down to normal after 3 months.

i think i can encapsulate in just a few words, what the ideal diet consists of: to eat no carbohydrates whatsoever, other than at least two pounds of low-starch carbs per day. even if i am right, though, the hard part of this is actually implementing such a diet plan. meals would be just fine, but it is the snacks that are the difficult part....but maybe that only goes to show that we need to stop eating snacks altogether. so basically our two meals per day should consist of animal protein, a lot of low starch vegetables, and a small amount of some kind of healthy dietary fat, such as avocados

Wonderful information. An “A” list guest.
Again - Great job letting the Guest Speak. People get antsy because LCHF/KETO is off center to conventional teachings. Getting ‘involved’ with your ‘own well being’ is a ‘commitment’. A worth while commitment.

  • @alphacause

I can see why Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt hired Dr. Bret Sher as the host of his Diet Doctor podcast. Dr. Sher doesn't appear to be dogmatic, and that willingness to listen is such an important character trait to have when hosting a show about diet - a topic that is only second to religion and politics in terms of controversy. Having listened to the Diet Doctor podcast, I can attest that Dr. Sher does an excellent job challenging his guests, but at the same time being flexible enough in his views that he is amenable to change. For those of you who haven't, I would recommend checking the podcast out.
