I like how David Grand presents his ideas about how the brain works and Brainspotting , but I have to recognise that in this video he seem to claim a few things that are not actually correct nor consistent. He articulates his ideas as truth rather than theories. Here is summary of what he says and why I reject this:
    1) ‘I will talk about how trauma affect creativity’: No matter how many countries David has visited and how many articles he has written , Brainspotting is still a theory in progress. David cannot say he is going to explain how creativity happens this is just his view on this issue. In fact, David admits he has just learned many things about the brain a year ago.
    2) ‘The problem with most of psychotherapies is that they use language. Most of what affect us is subcortical’. Maybe. if this is the case, how David explain the effectiveness of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF CBT) which has been recommend by the World Health Organization together with EMDR for PTSD. Hundred of studies confirm CBT effectiveness. CBT uses language only and it works. Also, you cannot separate language from emotions these are interlinked within the brain.
    3) ‘Brainspotting bypass the neocortex’: What is the evidence? Where is the research that support this statement? You have mentioned many theories but not provided with any evidence.
‘Everything we do in Brainspotting we try to make consistent with what happen in the brain’ At the same time David said that ‘ the brain cannot be understood from the outside’: A contradiction? If we we don’t actually know how the brain works, how and why Brainspotting works cannot be explained yet.
David also says ‘Science is very important for Brainspotting’: If this is the case how after 13 years of Brainspotting’s discovery there is still not a single Randomised Controlled Trial published that demonstrates its effectiveness in the long term, when compared to other approaches or no treatment. David also talks about the importance of attunement and relational frame in Brainspotting to help clients to stay within the ‘window of tolerance’. Yes, but this is needed with any form of therapy. Many forms of psychotherapy depend entirely on this attunement taking place and are very effective.
    4) Another one. David argues that Brainspotting works with all clients suffering trauma, if it does not work fast, it will work with more sessions. This is presumptuous. No psychotherapy can claim that because outcome really depends on so many variables.
    5) Finally, David says that ‘good actors have to be the character’. That is not correct. Acting schools will never teach students to ‘be’ the character as this can only lead to losing the crucial balance and control actors need to have as they play their character.
To sum up there are many interesting points covered by David’s presentation, but many are not backed by evidence. David’s theories are based on his opinion, or someone else’s opinion (read the German guy from Germany). To be more credible, David needs to be more open about Brainspotting as it being a theory in progress rather than expressing his ideas as they were solid truth.
