Sir, you explain this better than any other video on UA-cam. Squaring up the driver face consistently is the biggest thing missing from my game. Everything else has progressed nicely. I'm 35 years old and have had this problem for 20 years. I'm off to the range and then 18+ holes.
Brilliant video. This has genuinely helped me understand where I’ve been going wrong for so many years and it has really made a difference to my shots. Thank you!
My club face is in a really good position all the way through the back swing, then down swing it is wide open. Never found something as constructive as this to get me in a lot better position. Thanks man!!
As a lifelong mid to upper 90’s scorer...dude, you are spot on!!! I’m obviously not an expert, but man, when I try to instruct those that, “hate” golf, or those that think anyone can play, and try to explain on how to swing, I never have the verbiage or patience. Your content is perfect for folks like me and those that are learning. I’ve sent this video to 15 dudes. Thanks.
Love this feeling. This is something I’ve been searching for for a long time. The wringing the towel feel is perfect. I’m gonna take this to the range and try and stop the open club at impact I currently get with my driver.
I have added a badminton raquet on every club now with silver tape. Down to brass tacks. Did my best round of golf with them last round, but the club director wanted to have a talk.
Great video Alex. I have always squared the club face with my lead hand. Old School. But have a server injured lead hand. I will preset the club face like you showed on the first drill. Thank you.
Great vid. Just getting back into golf and this vid is perfect. Bought a driver years ago when playing but never used it as it was more trouble than it was worth. This makes me want to persevere once again! Thanks for making it so easy to follow.
alex, i right away tried the drill with a spatula while i was making blueberry pancakes and my wife said what the heck are you working on now so i said take a guess, golf she says. she doesn't like that golf takes up a lot of my time and thought but she lives with it. later on i grabbed the badminton racket out of the closet that i keep there to ward off the bats we get sometimes in the house. now i went outside in the yard with a bit of snow on the ground and hit balls off my mat using this action and it worked great. thnx for the info it really helped my impact and ball flight.
Range report- did this with my irons and hit much more shots closer to the center of the face. My problem is that I was hooking a lot of them. My path tends to come pretty far in to out. How would you adjust?
Hi Alex , great video thank you 😊, Played today using the preset technique for last parallel, The change on the course throughout my hole game was remarkable , never struck the ball so good , control consistency all there ! Wow . Top advice for anyone who doesn’t strike a crisp iron or who is short on distance . Thank you once again Take care and best wishes Paul
I find fairways with 3wood but my driver is all over the place but I think what you said about strengthen the face is the missing piece to my swing. Thanks AE!
Finally got to play the other day your right, I'm hitting longer and more consistently. You're a miracle worker Alex! This is the most important lesson every golfer should learn.
Great tip Alex! So if at last parallel my toe is pointing up then my face is open and I need to roll the hands?? I always thought toe up was the position you wanted..cheers
Need this! On the simulator, my path is 1-2 degrees in or out, not bad :), but my face to path is usually 15-22 degrees open, so straight push to the right. Have to aim at the left side 200 yards away for my target to have any hope of hitting the fairway. Funny but this is only with the driver, other clubs are quite a bit straighter.
Thanks Alex, great explanation of a concept I’ve just learned about in last year or so after 30 years of 7 hcp golf and trying to “time” my hands. Is it fair to say that at age 67, less flexibility (hard to get into side bend position at impact) will mean I do have to roll my forearms a little more? Your impact position is beautiful and I’d love the consistency but is it less possible as we get older? I am btw straighter (9 fairways, 11 greens, 5 hcp) and better for learning and at least trying to get into this position, just really hard compared to my 40 year old son who does it easily and plays to scratch
Alex I have always struggle with the dreaded pull. I finally said hell with it, I’ll try to slice it. Behold, it went straight. The feel is one of leading with the heal of the club head and keeping the toe up. Provided the rotation is there the club seems to square itself. What have I discovered?
Thanks Alex, great tip. I understand where the club face position should be during the downswing but where should it be after impact and the follow through???
Alex I use your preset method on the golf course that automatically gives me dynamic loft and lag and squares the club face. This along with your video on how far to stand from the hall have been game changers for me. Thanks very much.
@@AlexElliottGolf It's what we call in the Maritime as Shelia's Brush. A storm after St. Patrick's Day. Last Friday it was 17 degrees celsius. Typical March weather here.
Others call this the “twist away” to ensure the back of the left hand/club face point more down at the first check point on the back swing. Been immensely helpful to my game. Just do this on a 3/4 swing with a mid iron to start. Video is great but I think it over complicates the first step to get a square club face, fail this and everything else is a mute point.
Hi Alex, videos are great. Thanks. Can I ask you, on the downswing should I wring the towel slightly, or is it just a feeling? I can get great contact on the ball but always fades.
I have always struggled with being too "handsy" is that even a word? And fanned tbe club open and tried hudding it. I have tried doingbthis for years but never really understood how until now. Tried it on the range tonight with instant results....I did have to ensure in turned the hips correctly though. So cheers for the tips. (7 handicapper) at 57yrs old and improving 👌
Hello. Liked your video using the driver and hitting the ball square face. But how far should the driver be from point of impact that it is still perpendicular to the target, 2 ft or 4 ft? Thank you.
Great video Alex. This is my issue exactly. I have the clubface vertical at P6 and then rolled over and facing the ground at P9. When I practice (without a ball), getting the clubface correct at P6 it feels like I will hit a smother hook. Is this normal?
What is the feel you have with the upper portion and elbow of your left arm with this swing? Do you have the "hold the headcover in your left armpit" feel? Or does your left arm separate some from your body?
Look at Mike Melaska videos. He promotes wrist flap rather than roll to square the club face. He demonstrated how to alter the flap for fade and draw shots to get full release. It works!
When I close the face the club head is pointing down So when I hit the ball I’m striking down so I need a 1ft hook shot and make a divot after the ball
I am 5-8 fairways but I roll my wrist open to close, would love to be more accurate with GNR and NO rolling of the wrist. Seems if I don't roll the face open, I lose distance.
Hello 👋 Alex, good 🏌️♂️stuff here! Is this racquet drill good for both the Driver and Irons or just for the Driver only? Also, is it’s just me that sees this, or can this drill help with an Over the Top move as well with the motion it’s promoting for the downswing? I’m thinking 🤔 it can.
Great video and it helped me do quite well and consistent off the tee. For what its worth (doubt much), but I don't like the term "false" pre-set. Prefer "pre-set for success" and rotate through down the line! ;>)
I have a lot of forward shaft lean at impact, and I’m assuming I get the face exactly back to where it started, but that forward shaft lean keeps the face open. It also makes sense why Dustin Johnson has an extremely closed club face throughout his entire swing and he also has a ton of forward shaft lean at impact. I guess they cancel each other out, but the more forward shaft lean the more you need to close the club face. Solid video I liked it a lot and it was easy to understand
So are you saying there is no “roll over/release” with the driver? If you watch Rory hit driver, he supinates tremendously at impact which imo gives him an extra 3-5 mph of clubhead speed. I am 100% positive that screwing the club face at impact gives you more distance than just using a square to target flexion/extension release. In my swing it makes about 20 yard distance gain when I roll over release the club. So my question and problem is how the heck do you rollover your hands with driver without shutting down the club face too much. This is what K have been struggling with and nobody seems to give the right advice. Sure I can keep my swing as is but I really want the extra 20 yards that I know is there from rolling the wrists into impact without a low hook. Also this instructor mentions nothing about lag in the driver swing which makes a world of difference in timing. Anyhow, that’s my rant. If anybody knows what I am talking about please let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this. I feel like my drive clubface has to be adjusted to very open position for it to square up at impact when rolling the wrists. My irons are fine because the strike is down so the club face is square at impact and then “screws” into the ground at the low point past the ball. But with driver this means I would have to “screw in” as the club is on it way up into the ball (a later release then with irons) is that correct?
Driver is killing me at the moment, Just smother hooks. Got to the point now where I have the yips with driver! This is a really good visual drill. I feel my club face closes down very quickly through impact. And learnt to play in an era where I was taught toe up and forearm roll. I am also a below knee amputee, so struggle to pivot well
This has to be one ☝🏽 of the hardest skills in golf!! Master it - follow along 🙌🏼 thank you
Not for me. It happened accidentally and works brilliantly.
Also took me 4years

Hmm. Very well presented. Need to watch this again tomorrow. I’m not getting the concept of how the bowed left wrist closes the clubface
Hi Martin thank you!
Ultimately the bowling feeling keeps the face square - strong in relation to the shaft shallowing

@alexelliottgolf how do you know how much to bow the wrists? What happens if just keep your wrist flat and do you do the same for irons and wedges?

Hello Michael
Let the club go as it passes your hip height. Let go as if your hitting a bad ball or tennis shot
If you've passed impact I think one just hangs on and allow physics to take care of the rest.
