It's the complete opposite at Carrowkeel in County Sligo. The chamber there captures the light on the longest day of the year. Carrowkeel is several hundred years older than Newgrange.
Yes and it needs protecting by OPW. Aren't visitors or others removing the stones? I saw a pic of damage done over last few years. An OPW-run site be good for the local area too

Nearly as magical as in-person viewing and yet deeply moving. My gratitude for all involved who've made this happen soars to great heights. Immutable, ephemeral, liminal, ineffable, transient all and more describe this mystical experience.
Watching from Ensenada in Baja California Mexico. We are on Pacific Time. It is Dec 20th. Thank you to all involved for making this possible. My deepest gratitude.
Just up the road from you in Rosarito Beach enjoying the replay, Juracy. I, too am grateful and deeply moved by this and all who came together to make this possible for us to see it thank you!
Thank you so much, Clare and Frank, for a most touching and informative presentation. I remember the time in the 50's - early 60's when you had to borrow a key from a local farmer so you could open the entrance gate at the front! No one was aware then of the significance of the Winter Solstice at Newgrange.
What a beautiful, serene place. Makes you forget about the world today, lets you transcend ages and feel a deep connection with the people who have come before us. Truly remarkable.
Just incredible. This experience made me feel my Irish spirit while I contemplated what the light must have meant to those ancestors 5000 years ago. Thank you from the United States, Idaho.

What a beautiful experience. Although I'm sad for the reason this was canceled, I am very thankful that this filming allowed me to see an event I would never otherwise have been able to view. Thank you OPW and everyone involved. This was stunning.
Just what my Celtic spirt needed this morning as Jupiter and Saturn also align up tomorrow - the Great Conjunction - we are all reminded that our place in the Cosmos , our Cosmic home, is here, now and forever, in time and space.
Thank you so much for offering this livestream; I live in the U.S. (central Ohio) and would normally not be able to see this phenomenon. It was just breathtaking to be able to see the light arrive and move, and think about our ancestors and the spirits of the dead. Sending good wishes for a happy new year to all!
Been there twice to see the electric approximation, but watching this - even from thousands of miles away - is amazing. Appreciate the Rooks on their morning flight too!
Amazing!! just wish the person directing didn’t focus so much on the sun rise! Would have been nice to see more of the chamber. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Thank you one and all... wonderful job. Discussion & information but not over done. Raking and care but not changing to suit your own individual thoughts. My father from Donegal passed this year, at 89. Watching this was very important to me. Thank you!!!
Two of the most passionate and wonderful people narrating and giving us a beautiful and knowledgable account of the magnificent Bru na Boinne. Thank you Clare and Frank, always a pleasure and thank you for all your passion and work keeping our love for Newgrange ever so alive! Thank you.
I visited Newgrange back in the mid 1990's when I lived in Ireland for a couple of years. I think it was in the summer that we visited. Thank you, OPW, for setting this up so people like me can finally see what it looks like in there on the winter solstice!
Thank you for making this beautiful moving experience available to the world. In October 2014 I was fortunate to be able to visit Newgrange and enter the passage. The mystical feeling I had there has never left me. Thank you for the respectful commentary too, allowing silent spaces and speaking in poetic terms. There's so much more than science happening there.
Buíochas as ucht an léargas...thanks for the enlightenment and illuminating the dark recesses of our uninformed minds. How appropriate that this phenomenal gift from Newgrange should go viral as we emerge from the darkness as we contemplate the error of our ways. If only we respected and embraced the precious realm in which we live and appreciated what we have, instead of pushing the planet to the limit in pursuit of greed. Feliz Navidad y próspero año from Andalucía ón Spailpín Spánach.
Many thanks to OPW for this. While I was able to watch via live stream here in Los Angeles, CA, I shared this far and wide with friends and family who couldn't. Thanks for all you do!
In the Burren in County Clare there are many unexcavated cairns. Several are at the summits of large hills and mountains. Slieve Carran is spectacular but Turlough Hill has both the large unexcavated cairn and over 100 hut foundations. It's an amazing site to visit and the views are astounding.

Drove down to watch it yesterday morning alongside the river boyne... great experience.. enjoyed watching the sun rise onto the monument while watching the live stream. Thank you to all involved ^-^
Wonderful to watch and experience(even if I am a day or two late).Thank you for the moments of silence to allow us to appreciate the spectacle for ourselves.
Thank you for sharing this 💚 I especially loved the views from inside (though the sunrise was pretty). It would be amazing to see continuous video from each angle. I would watch them all!
Clare, Craig reminded me to watch this amazing event this morning. You are bundled up warmly, so it must be a very nippy morning. I watch from the warmth of my home, but it must be extra thrilling to view it in person. Thanks to you and the professor for providing us with the opportunity to see this phenomenon. Well done, and Merry Christmas.
People show up on the exact same day as the people who built the alignment into their monument over 5,200 years ago and that alignment will continue 5,200 years into the future on the December Solstice. I hope this information gives some joy for although the technical issues are intricate, the monument itself is a testament to our understanding of the motions of the planet rather than guessing how the Newgrange builders understood the great daily and annual cycles.
The recurring aboriginal symbol for Waterhole (spiral) is again visible on the roof of the monument at 59:06. Has LIDAR ever been used to examine the site?
In a Water Dreaming painting to give an example, a U shape symbol is used for a man but if he is sitting next to a water hole, concentric circles would be incorporated and spiral lines showing running water. The artist is telling a story that the man by the waterhole “the waterman” is summoning rain to come.
Fantastic. It would be great just to keep showing the chamber...no need to show us the sun rising...we can see that ourself lol but would rather watch the sun enter the dark chamber ....the lady is doing a great job trying to direct.
I can't see the Irish sunrise from where I am, and have never seen the site and would like to. It's a clever idea. The other lady is doing a great job being condescending "lol"
An amazing event to witness! Fair play for all the hard work and effort put into capturing this. That said, it's real shame about the quality of the video mixing. Even the presenter (God love her) was getting frustrated with the chunkiness of it. For such a time-sensitive occurrence it's important to have this tight. Hopefully this will improve tomorrow and Tuesday
Thank you for this! Magical. I'd love to see a video of the entire thing in maybe a split screen between the two/three interior cameras, if you folks have that footage.
Lovely commentary - just a note for the camera work - could you not have the sunrise as a small insert to the full images of the light going into the tomb itself. Having grown up in Ireland, I know the surprise and wonder of a sunny dawn... no clouds or rain! But still - would have loved more focus on the megalithic structure.
Totally agree. Far too many cuts scenes away from the actual view in the chamber. We know what the sun looks like, we want to see more of the insides please.
Yes, I kept thinking how remarkably similar the sunrise view over the landscape was to everybody else's. While the commentary was interesting, I think a reflective, contemplative silence, with just a single camera view of the chamber, would have captured more of the moment.
The roof box view I'm only seeing at 36:30 ish, we could have a multi cam of the first chamber view, the roof box passage view side by side, and a long view of the top down camera underneath. Split the view into thirds. We do know what the sun looks like, so past the sunrise we don't need it too much. Great stuff
I believe they were occasionally cutting to the sunrise itself to correlate the timing of the light seen within the monument to the placement of the sun above the horizon.
Hearing the repeated begging of the lady to "show the Chamber Please." causes one to be irritated at the complete disregard of the event inside. She is lovely person whom apprisssiates this much more than the camera operator. It would be nice to have seen this strictly inside where it actually matters. If there is "artwork" in there no one would know.
