I bred chickens for over 15 years. I got on eBay for an incubator, reptile ceramic heater and I had a heat lamp already. Between my friends, neighbours and around my house, I had enough material to make a brood box. I love quail but the rest of the family are to spoilt to eat around all the little bones. Since my last surgery in 2019 I’ve struggled to get my gardens up and productive (new house and sorer than ever before). I still grow enough to noticeably lower my grocery bill and with 5 chooks I get plenty of eggs.🍺🍺
My young chickens are a bit bigger than quails now. Lost two yesterday, not sure what got them. Hawk, cat, fox, snake I don't think it was the big snake about three metres as it just ate the baby Possum that's nature especially living amongst the bush.
Yep! I've hatched hundreds of Jap quails. I called them my 'Popcorn chickens' 😆 I was able to process them from alive to ready to cook in 5 mins each. How fast they grow and how many eggs they lay depends on how much and the type of food you give them 👍 I also tried rabbits 😊
Ive kept large quail for eggs and meat. 4 quail egg = 1 hen egg. Meat is a bit fiddly, but very tasty. Make sure your quail pen is rat proof. We lost our flock to being eaten alive by rats overnight.
Bantam chickens are a great size. Not to big and not to small. When im getting closer to coming down for some supacoop compost i can bring you a few fertile eggs for you too incubate, bantam Australorp X english game if you might be interested. As i also heard that you mentioned about the quails for meat. Yes this will definitely be another awesome segment for your channel.
@martysgarden you should check out Serama chickens. They are pretty cool for little pets. I have another broody hen sitting on her wild clutch of 10 eggs in the old wood pile. I thought I lost her about a week ago. They should be hatching around the 20th. As long as the snakes don't get them. Fingers crossed.
OK now this is Food for Thought as my husband doesn't want chickens due to vermin & snakes but Quail hmmmmmmm. Cheers Denise at Geebung - Great video again Marty
Marty I saw the quail egg at my Local Brisbane at Aspley fruit market we brought a punnet it was nice in our omelette couldn’t tell the diff and with the egg shortage with chickens i reckon your on a winner winner quail dinner on that one
At the moment it may just be for the eggs. Just early days still as I learn and see if I enjoy the process of raising these lovely little birds. Oh lots of bean growing here now. The Snake Bean just started producing
I have had Quails before would love to get Guinea Folk great for eggs and good alarm protects stranger danger... Check them out for us please... Quails are great to clean up chicken or bird Avairy's live underneath and they clean up the leftover food dropped...😮😮😮 I miss my birds big time....and the noise in the nighttime they make the call out...😂😂❤❤
If someone has 6 eggs for breakfast, (I’d have six scrambled eggs back before I became a vegematerian) that’s 24 Quail eggs! You’d have to feed em steroids !😢
That's a pity Donna as you will miss the gardening videos and the rest of the series for the Cost of Living VictoryGarden. New Gardening video is out later today. Just choose what you prefer to watch is what most people do
I really enjoyed your videos, but do not eat animals and hate to see them die. I can't be cold-hearted in this manner. I've also unsubscribed from Mark at self sufficient me for this reason. It torments me how people treat animals, how cruel they are and how quick they are to kill them so they have their meat. Same thing with these stupid evil American. They just want to kill, kill, kill. I'm so tired of living in this evil world and preferred to never have been born in the first place. I don't belong here. I know people are going to hate on me, but this is how I feel. I just can't stand living anymore.
Let me wander north to the homestead, way out further on there to roam, by a gully in flood let me linger, when the summery sunshine has flown Spose yu hate Slim Dusty too!😂😂😂😂😂
This is great Marty! We’re thinking about getting more quails for eggs, we only have two and 5 hens. ☺️💚
Hi Missilla, let me know if you do!
Looking forward to seeing the quails continue to grow.❤
Me too, the babies are growing fast!
My Quails flu away straight over my fence the same day I bought them.
Oh sorry to hear that. I hope you got them back. They get tired quickly
@@martysgardenyeah they fly up a tall tree get tired stand on a branch and won’t come down.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. Ebay may be a good option for me to find an incubator. All the best to you and your family
Love your cheerful videos. Thank you.
Thanks so much, means a lot to me to get comments like this!
Love the quails, didnot seem tobe stressed at all by you being there.
They are getting used to me more every day!
Great episode mate, solid idea investing in quail, and I can't wait for the rabbits, fish, and king pigeons next on the micro farm!
Interesting times ahead. The Quail are still being trialed but look promising!
Have you ever kept large quail big enough for eating or to get the eggs?

Awesome mate, gotta get an incubator yet! Quail is still in trial phase, but looking highly likely!

It's a thought yer!

True, not as many eggs on the shelves these days. If the trial goes okay,,then hmmmm
Love the Quails. I will be curious to see how the experiment turns out.
Thanks! We're pretty excited about them!
Quail eggs are delicious,l like them more then chicken eggs
Wow, can’t wait to try them. My wife Sherly loves them as well
Have you thought about raising soldier fly larvae as chook food?
No, not really
Quails?! wow. You have a homestead!
Yes, you could call it that. Mark from Self Sufficient me said I am haha
I don’t know much about quails 😊
S you’ll need scrap vegetable for the chicken and quail 😊
You will soon Rick!
Quail yum yum, much better flavour and texture then all the foul imo other than wild mountain duck. 😋
Yeah the quail are great!
You're idiots.
Quail ❤cute. I'd die of hunger first 😅too soft.
They are cute! They do lay a fair few eggs though 😉
@martysgarden id raise them for the eggs. Food crisis . Girls gotta do what she has to do!!!
@@bonitahanekom2047 very true!
Poor little quail. 🔪 😢
Eat more beans, plenty of protein.

Oh I love Guinea, I wonder if my space is big enough
Great little birds, easier to keep when female & male ratio kept in check....they can get brutal with each other
I will have to keep an eye on them, so far so good
You need to clean out your gutters 😂
Haha, I know, gotta get on to it!

Thanks a lot of eggs bro, down them like snacks the Quail haha
@@martysgardenyep, but it wasn’t the 6 scrambled eggs I had that was greedy it was the 6 slices of toast as well!😅
Don't your chickens eat your vegies?
Scraps yes.
@martysgarden so you don't let them free range around your vegies?
@ yes
Is it really self suff, if you have to keep buying _their_ food, though. This is what stops me.
If you get free produce and cover costs you're on a win for sure. But the journey is my opinion worth more than money.
I will have to unsubscribe and stop watching. I want to watch strictly gardening video, not homesteading videos. Hate this word.

To each his own. Nobody fights against people eating Mopane worms in South Africa ironically. I like this channel.
