This civ has one of the highest ceilings in 1v1 arabia in my opinion! Alot of tricks to master, and not easy to find the optimal composition. Hope this vid helps!
Thanks you for "So You Want To Play..." series. Can you also include tips to counter the civs as well? For example. what should you do if you are playing against Khmer.
One trick which works nicely for Khmer: Instead of building a mill for a herd of deer, you can send a bunch of villagers, and when they are full, just drop a farm right there. When they are done building, they are automatically dropping of the food, then send them back to the deer. Repeat as needed, then have them stay on the farms. (Of course this works in principle with other civs too, and also with lumber or mining camps, but the Khmer advantage is that the farm just can be used where it is.)
It's a bit of an issue that you're then left with potentially unprotected farms, but it's VERY good when your deer spawn behind, or in Arena. Also IIRC 4 villagers will completely empty a single deer, as well - so it can generally be done pretty effectively with some micro. Micro that is unfortunately beyond me 11
Very important to know about ballista elephant: Their Bolt does Not Go through the unit you're targetting. It only (additionally) damages units in front of the target. Since you're usually targetting close units, BALLISTAS DONT WORK LIKE SCORPIONS AT ALL, unless you adjust the way you use them in some very awkward way
@Emperor AlHasan i think the reward can actually be quite huge. Especially when fighting against a ranged+melee composition, targetting the (squishy) ranged units will not only increase your damage output but also quickly reduce opponents damage output. If the entire enemy army outranges you though, than the effort is much more questionable
I love Khmer! I'm so glad you made a video on them! I usually scout rush into full scorpion/pikes and that holds off the enemy pretty well until imp, where I get 50 maxed out scorpions.
I like to play Khmer like: All dark age Vils on food under tc, click up at 17pop into 3 or 4 scouts. Followed up by archers. If this hasnt killed yet i go Castle age and add knights. Army Control is also helped a lot by that farm placement doesn't matter.
Hey Hera. Thanks as always. I really enjoy this video. Just a request/suggestions. When you are discussing the basic Civ strategy, can you add your thoughts of the Civ in a team game. Would be great to know your thoughts.
I hope future balances focus more on going with the civilizations unique units. Just playing different flavors of knights vs crossbows doesnt show how cool all those civilizations could be!
UU's are always going to be limited by the fact that you need a castle to produce (most of) them. Because they aren't usually available until mid-late castle age you dont get as much experience with utilizing them as other units, and therefore players are more comfortable working with standard units that they can build earlier into each game. Over 100 games, chances are you spend 2x as much game time controlling knights or archers than you do microing with a unique unit, so it may be a comfort thing (at least it feels like it to me sometimes).
@@0oShwavyo0 I mean I know why we dont see them, and am glad their not an cure all for ebery situration. Its just the civs are all so cool and the unique units doubly so
I used to love Khmer, but I got sistematically beaten up on Arena playing them. I'm a terrible boomer and every single time I'm up to imp after my opponnent and inevetably trebbed down. This transition to imp is always my doom
@@Wadusher I can't find the balance. Either I focus on booming and get rekt in Castle Age without army, or the other way around: produce too much army in fear of stay behind in numbers, then I have no res to go up in a reasonable time.
@@knasttrast7168 I need to work on that. Arena is a good map to defend this castle age aggression while booming behind since you have very hard time taking down defensive castles. Sometimes I managed to petard wall and raid with elephants, but the opponnent really need to be a bad defensive player for that to pay off.
I started playing tatars lately, go triple archery range in castle, but have no idea what to do with eco, fuedel age, more tc's or not. Would really love a video on tatars. Btw thx for your video's they carried me to 1250 (dropped back down to 1150 because I'm trying some new civs.)
noob question - how the heck all things in the beginning of the game seem to just happen automatically? 2 houses, sheep sent in all directions? I do not see any mouse pointer movement showing direction for sheep or where to place bulidng? I do not mean shortcuts to choose what building to make, just how they were build without pointing location? ok nvm, I guess it is just a recording :)
I used to think that Khmer was the most OP civ (back in HD Rajas) solely because of the combo of elephants with heresy. Then I realized how garbage and tough they are to play before castle age and changed my mind. Then I changed my mind again when farm bonus came out.
skipping buildings doesn't affect going feudal timing that much. And you're gonna want a blacksmith for fletching. You could do the 1 archery build to defend with less investment if you're enemy is doing 2 archeries, for example, and get faster to castle age
@@gunar.kroeger it doesn't affect feudal time if you play standard. But you could let all your vils work under your TC and click feudal before mill and lumber Camp. This is a good strategy for a fast scout rush. For fast archers, i agree that fletching is a big hurdle, but it doesn't mean that it cannot work (maybe even just without fletching)
@@derikaem8021 Not really. You want mill and lumbercamp for both upgrades as soon as you hit feudal, and for efficiency. You CAN skip everything and go fast imp if you wanted to, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should

@@ottomann4846 Agreed, though lower ELO scrubs like me tend to shy away from mangos because they're expensive, easy to counter in their own right, and can friendly fire if you don't have the APM to manage them properly.
@@Naxhus2 fair enough. I'm not very good but they are my favourite units! UU + mangos is the most fun style for me (because no other unit can defend mangos from both kts/eagles AND other mangos)
They are actually quite disappointing for their cost (and the castle requirement) because unlike scorpions they deal piss weak damage before they are in big numbers, the enemy doesn't need redemption to convert them and they get too much competition with the Khmer scorpions and elephants to have an actual niche outside cutting tree in castle age. Even that disappears in imp cuz the onager upgrade is cheaper than the elite ballista elephant one lol.
