    Amazing. That high iron rail is unreal. 900,000 lbs. Can't believe it shattered after flexing that much. Truly amazing alloy.

      @@abdulfatahgazal8955 Rail is not cast, it is rolled. It has high carbon and manganese for strength. It is not brittle, but high toughness, it must flex when railroad cars pass over it.

      It's probably not very good for the mechanisms. It would wear out pretty quickly when it's on full power. But it's made to handle these tasks.

      Watching the piston shift and knowing the platten planness is fucked hurt my heart. This machine will need some amount of service if it is used for any precision measurements

      Pretty sure anybody that fliched definitely worked in a shop where a piece of equipment failed catastrophically. Nothing is much scarier than flying metal whizzing by your head missing by an inch or two without warning. 🤔

    Imagine what the results would be if you'd set these up straight instead of angled. And had that Big Rail not been bent to one side slightly it would have probably supported a lot more before failing. But squashing them when they are already leaning isjust setting them up. I am inpressed that even when compromised to fail that rail held a lot of weight. But last I heard trains are heavy!

    That big rail chunk was pretty scary. Kind of reminded me of a torsion spring failure. The sledgehammer was pretty bad also.

    One day I was removing a axle bearing from an old Ford axle. The splitter blocks blew apart. Sent shrapnel all over the shop. I'm glad I was the only one in the shop that day. The only thing that saved me was the scatter shield I built. Many years after that incident i still find pieces of those block sticking out of the drywall!

    Can I ask what on earth you use a 500 tons press for originally? 500 tons is insane.

      There are presses that are far stronger then 500 tons. Those are to mold high density materials. We are just luck to see what could happen in public. Where most places do not allow tours in high risk places. Another thing is if you think of it the big boy freight train when fully loaded it's self is roughly 1.275 million pounds. Which could travel up to about a top speed of 70 miles an hour.

    How many noticed that the heavy rail (by his word, by todays standard it was only yard rail about 70-80 pound not the heavy rail of 132-136 pound rail) that it was not centered on the press anvil.

    im glad u threw that piece of armor plate in the mill, it was interesting to see just how much it actually deformed, which was amazing by the way, also i was Not expecting the cone shaped piece to hold up anything like it did that was impressive against armor, whats the cone made of?? i was really expecting the armor to hold up better...but it IS quite literally a million pounds focused on a square inch or few...so...

    I'm amazed that the big survived 450 tons. I wonder to what extent the top and bottom (horizontal) part of the rail contributed to the strength. I would have thought these parts of the joist only resisted bending and shearing forces but maybe there are other forces resisted by the horizontal parts.

      A train locomotive is a few hundred tonnes spread over two rails and a few very small contact points. I thought it would survive more than that.

    At 450 tons the gauge only said 40 psi, which would require 22,500 linear inchs to get 450 tons...so what was the pressure in the gauge relating to?

    There is a big difference in the force applied by a large surface in the first experiments vs the sharpened point in the example with the tank armour. The psi in those piercing examples must be astronomical.
