On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: Helson - Shark Diver 40mm ETA, a Wolf in Wolf's clothing!

- On this episode we check out a true forum favorite, the Shark Diver 40mm from Helson's latest batch powered by the venerable Swiss ETA 2824-2. The Shark Diver is well known in the WIS(Watch Idiot Savant) community for being one of the few microbrand divers that has generally garnered respect from even the most jaded collectors. A quick search through Rolex forums will find many reviews praising the piece as a nice daily/beater alternative for the beloved Submariner. Sure it's not without it's faults but Helson hits all of the right notes with the Shark Diver, it conveys all of the classic dive watch design language while still being original enough to avoid getting caught up in the homage debate. It's a watch that lets its quality and capabilities do the talking , there's no horological magic to pad it's ego, it simply stands on it's own as a fine timepiece, appropriate for many a collection. Let me know what you think in the comments below, thanks.
I absolutely love the design of this watch. Mine will be arriving tomorrow finally. I was searching for a specific model for quite a while and finally got an opportunity to buy it.
I’ve heard a few people express a dislike for the Rolex “super case” or “maxi case” but personally, I love that look. The wide lugs give the watch a rugged, built for anything look, rather than a more delicate, streamlined appearance. There’s nothing wrong with either look but in this case, I really prefer the massive lugs. I’m really glad that Helson chose to apply the same design language to this watch. No chamfers, no polish, no rounded edges. Just a brutalistic, overbuilt, no frills tool watch. And because they stuck to that design principle in every aspect of the watch, there’s nothing that seems out of place or poorly thought out.
Even the bracelet is brilliantly designed. You get the sense that the bracelet took just as much time and effort to design as the watch. Ive seen a lot of small brands (and even some large brands) seemingly spend all of their time and resources on the watch head only to pair it with a mediocre bracelet, if it came with a bracelet at all. Helson put a ton of emphasis on this bracelet and it really shows. If you were to lay out 100 random metal bracelets with 100 random watch heads and attempt to pair them up properly, there is no doubt that most people would easily be able to pair the Shark Diver with this bracelet. The same certainly can’t be said about the vast majority of other watches. The industry is flooded with generic looking bracelets along with copies of jubilee and oyster bracelets. A completely unique looking bracelet that was unmistakably designed for a particular watch instantly sets you apart from the rest of the companies out there. They really did an excellent job.
I got same size and color but only with Miyota movement. This watch have most of my wrist time. Great watch, especially with stunning aluminum lumed bezel insert. highly recommended.
Thanks for a most comprehensive review Mark. I own a brass Armida A1 which, quite possibly, will be joined by its cousin thanks to your advocacy.
Awesome , glad to hear Brian
Both of those are really cool! I'm going to check em out. Thanks for the review!
Awesome looking watch. I thought it was a lot bigger because it's so burly looking. The size is really nice, ETA and the LUME! Great pickup.
I have the black version of the Helson SD. It's a great watch however the only weaknesses I think is in the small screws that hold the links of the bracelet together. These loosen very quickly with every day use and you have to keep an eye on this else you could be in danger of the watch coming off your wrist. I have rescrewed each screw with Loctite 222. This is a common issue. But I love it.
that is a major thing. not buying this watch. lol
The blue stainless 40 is currently sold out, only the black is available. Saved my wallet from more damage.
The best looking version! :) Thank you for this review!
Love the hands on this beauty. I am glad to see a 'normal' sized diver at 40mm....even though I love my Ecozilla
Great review of a cool looking watch :)
Very cool. Great review
Appreciate it Chris, any big plans for the channel in 2017?
Average Bros none yet but will think of something. Take care
"the business"...lmao. Well said!
Thank you Sir, glad you enjoyed that, lol
Let's hookup and talk about a colab: maverickwatchreviews@gmail.com
emailed Sir!
Great review! My wrist is a bit smaller than yours, so I may go for the 38mm. I've been setting aside funds for a Sinn 556, but this might throw a wrench in that plan...
This might be my favourite affordable blue diver.
Great review man 🍻
Holy lume !
Would a 6.5 inch wrist be able to pull this watch off?
How does this watch compare to a Steinhart Ocean Titanium 500? I think I kind of know the answer to that. I haven't seen either one in the flesh so to speak. Thanks.
What are your thoughts on the aluminum bezel? Is it easy to ding up?
I've handled these types of inserts from Raven, Armida, and Helson and they've all been EXTREMELY durable
Where did you get the bracelet for the Armida?
Really like the case shape however in my opinion the position of the date window, not being equally spaced between the 4 and 5 spoils the watch design. I'd rather not have a date if, as in this case, it detracts from the look of the dial. Maybe it's just me but I would not buy this watch for this reason.
Agreed
Looks nice but the square lugs and box shape case put me off. If they narrow the case I’d buy one.
Have you taken a look at their 38mm options?
Average Bros the miyota movement is a bit too inaccurate for me liking but the case and watch on the 38 look superb. The clasp looks great as well.
@@wheelsandwatches I've been pretty lucky with my Miyotas, typically within +10sec or less a day, they did have an ETA model on rubber in 38mm, you never know, they might bring it back.
Looking at the official website of Helson I noticed that the model evaluated by the channel has a Japanese mechanism Miyota 9015 and not Eta as informed.
The eta powered batch is sold out, so they removed the listing
Thanks for the info.
looks better than the Sub
good watch for the money
Are all Helson divers iso rated?
What size is your wrist if you dont mind me asking?
7.25"
Do they not make the aluminum bezel anymore ?
Different batches have different configs
have one love it
How about a link to the watch!
helson case resembles the oris aquis
i hate how the 40mm doesnt have the nice clasp the others do
ASMR watch reviews
We are the World ?
Shame they're out of stock :(
I think the Helson lugs are too wide, on an otherwise good looking watch. The Wolf, the lugs are too thin. What were they thinking about when they designed them? LOL, the designers of these watches should be castigated, LOL...
too chunky
A tip: Stop saying "You know" or at least edit some of them out.
Great looking piece. I like it a lot. A shame there is no way to see and hold them before buying.
How come you never post links to watch you review?
