- Come along with us as we explore the island of Niihau, Hawaii and ride with Niihau Helicopters for an aerial tour of the "forbidden island," then explore on foot and snorkel around. My dad is from Ni’ihau, I shared this with him and he misses it there since it’s been a while since he’s returned. Sad that they have tours there, BUT it’s a way for the owners to make an income and continue to preserve the culture on that island. I’m glad that it’s quick tours and not allowing tourists to visit my family since it’s like using them as just some spectacle.
The owners do not make a profit on this tour; it is strictly for upkeep on the helicopter so it is ready when the residents need it and only around six people per week visit there. You only visit the beaches, Kiekie and Nonopapa are not visited, only observed from a distance above. This tour is not a show up, pay your money, and go. You have to make arrangements in advance and be approved to go. The process takes a long time and there is no guarantee you will get to go. All visitors are screened. This is all well worth it if you value the untouched, quiet serenity of what Hawaii used to be. Thank you for your comments. Aloha!

The island of Ni'ihau is actually quite stunning. Most people think it is just a barren desert, but there is quite a bit of lush greenery, along with the gorgeous beaches and ocean.

Can you go to the beaches and take shells like in oahu or no and is it hard to find niihau shells?
Yes, the helicopter tour lands you right on the beach and you can collect all the shells you want. There are many beautiful shells and coral formations to be found on the beach. They gave us a beautiful 12” coral formation found there and we purchased some of the jewelry the natives made from Ni’Ihau shells.
Before you take anything from Hawai’i you need to ask permission and give something back. Us Kānaka strongly advise this. But do not take Lava Rocks Or Coral.
It’s best not to take anything. Plus it’s very bad luck.

We spend a good part of the year on Big Island, between Hilo and Kona. We also frequently go up to Kauai.

We highly recommend it. A++++ We have taken a lot of tours in a lot of places; this tour is #1. The people and the tour are exceptional and you will see the most pristine beach you have ever seen. It is like going back in time 100 years. Make sure you ask for Dana as your pilot. He is the one who flew the helicopter in the Jurassic Park films. This tour is non-profit. All proceeds go to maintaining the helicopter for the residents of Ni'ihau.

Unfortunately, you do not meet the residents, but they travel back and forth to Kauai frequently, and are extremely friendly. @Jeffrey Haines just don't. Trust me. You will not be looked well on by the locals there or by the locals in the entire state. This state is very cultural and I suggest you respect that culture. And that culture includes not going to Niihau. Unless of course you're invited
The entire island is privately owned by the Robinson family. It was purchased directly from King Kamehameha IV, so you are trespassing if you go without being invited.
@Noah Manuel - Great advice! Part of the Ni'ihau Helicopter's function is securing the border. The entire island is carefully watched and if someone goes without permission, they better hope the helicopter gets to them before the residents do. They are very protective of their fish and resources off the coast. Trust me, it is very dangerous to go there illegally.

There is a local phone number for Ni'ihau Helicopters on the front of their building, which is shown in the video. Add an 808 area code to get in direct contact with them. It is the best way!

I just did a helicopter ride around Kauai. When I go back I'll be going to Ni'ihau. We could see it in the far distance on our ride. Kauai was absolutely gorgeous. I mean some breathtaking beauty there!!! Wouldn't have been much more to go to Ni'ihau!
We have done both and we found the Ni'ihau tour more interesting. First off, it takes most of the day; about six to seven hours. It has more adventure to it. You can swim and explore. Secondly, you see a lot of Kauai when you leave and return since it flies out of Waimea. An absolute must do. Mahalo nui loa.
we did Kauai as well, I didn't realize how many of those copters had crashed.... afterward someone said, are you crazy? do you know you could have died? I thought it was great and I'm a thrill seeker / AC Mechanic... our pilot was very skilled and I'm sure his autorotate skills were there!
@@mrr8682 lol I have been on a few helicopter rides but after going in Kauai less than 2 months later there was a crash. Then I found the website that shows all the crashes. Whoa! I'd still go again in a heartbeat!
A few of my commandos and I got parachuted into that island during the night for a training mission. I love that island!

No.
Hawaii is the most secluded place in the world, and Ni'ihau is the least accessible island in the chain. The nearest place to Hawaii is 2500 miles in any direction. Thank you for watching.
Travis Family Travels Please go look at where the Midway Atoll is on a map, and reconsider. Take into account how difficult it is to get to the places I listed. Ni’ihau may require special permission, but it is still in range of a helicopter. Some of the places are of limits to every one but gov officials and scientists.
If you do a Google search for "what is the most secluded place on earth" Google responds with:
"Tristan da Cunha"
"Easter Island"
"Pitcarn Island"
Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland
"Bouvet Island"
And so on. Ni'ihau isn't on any of the lists. Surprisingly, Midway isn't either.
"Hawaii is the furthest from any landmass in the world. Formerly known as the Sandwich Islands, the Hawaiian Islands span the distance of 1,523 miles (2,451 km) from the Big Island of Hawaii in the southeast to the Kure Atoll in the northwest." While this might not make each and every island remote, if anything were to happen to communication, and the islands were in trouble, they are the fathest island masses from any other land mass (including other small islands) in the world. Ni'ihau is mostly cut off from the other islands in the chain, and that makes it possibly the most remote location on the planet. It's not impossible to access, but it requires a lot of travel and permission.
(the only thing closer to Hawaii than another continent is the Johnston Atoll but even that is like 700 miles away and isn't exactly a full island.
You're not wrong either, as all of those islands are secluded and remote in different ways that require different level of difficulty to access, but this island could also be up for such consideration. I'm in no way trying to start a fight I just thought this was interesting and looked it up.
@@FanFickChick1992 When I think of seclusion, I think of the following aspects regarding a location on earth:
-Ease of access
-Distance to civilization, a modern city, larger population, etc.
-Frequency of human visitation
-Likelihood of seeing another human
I don’t want a fight you either, but to me Hawaiian islands are disqualified, having been more or less continuously occupied by people for the last 1500 years or so. The relatively short distance from Ni’ihau to Honolulu is also an issue for me to consider it the most secluded, not to mention that it does have about 130 to 170 residents.
Johnson Island (part of the Johnson Atoll) on the other hand, is officially completely abandoned. It is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is closed to public entry, and access to Johnson Island is only granted by letter of authorization by not only the USFWS, but also by the US Air Force. It is indeed a full island.
I think there are more secluded places in the middle of nowhere Antarctica than Ni’ihua, given the hostile environment, and ratio of land mass to inhabitants on the continent. That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking to it. I just hope I was able to better explain my reasoning.
Interesting video. Interesting comments, too. When I lived on Oahu many locals could not pronounce my name and would laugh. It got old. I would correct them (nicely), but still would get giggles. On the other hand, if I mispronounced a Hawaiian word I was called stupid and disrespectful. Gave me great insight into the local mindset and ethos.

You nailed it. They love to call you disrespectful for anything they don't like. In a few words, they are unfriendly and arrogant. They say most haoles leave Hawaii within 8 months. That's correct. Why? Because they're treated like shit, harassed until they go. Oh, but they will take your tourist dollars. Meanwhile they're completely dependent on the people they hate so much. A lot of the residents are on welfare which is from US tax payers. So what, they don't even have to look for work? You are absolutely right. That is the purpose of the helicopter tour offered. It is expensive, but completely worth it as it goes to a great cause. It is not a tourist mill; it is a handful of carefully screened people that they take once a week.

Keep it off limits
It is off limits unless you are invited. They do also have hunting safaris. Both the safaris and helicopter tours help keep the helicopter operating for the residents as maintaining helicopters are very expensive. Perhaps all you people that bash people supporting the island should start donating money to support them so they do not have to offer tours. I'm sure about $500,000 a year would help them out a little. Thank you for your interest.
Travis Family Travels you got upset at me for no reason, then stared complaining on my channel. You completely misinterpreted my comment. I'm well aware if the rules with Ni'ihau. I am also part Hawaiian and live, I assume, right beside you. I’m not talking about the tours. I’m talking about the fact that it is off limits to people since it is privately owned, and for the fact that they preserve a little bit off the old Hawai’i that a good portion of my ancestors come from. I’m thankful for that and I truly hope that since it is privately owned, they continue to be able to hold out and keep Ni'ihau off limits. I have no reason to go there and disturb the place. Tourism is on enough if the Hawaiian islands as it is. It is very hard for them to do, but so far they have done it. I respect that, and good for them.

Who would want to go there? Not a thing to do except hunt for wild boar and snorkel, which you can do on other islands. The only reason to go there would be to experience isolation, a good thing, but they won't let you stay, so it's not an option.

This video shows absolutely nothing of the island. A glimpse mixed in with a lot of helicopter and Kauai stuff. As someone who lives in Hawaii and has been on that island, on their expensive helicopter tour (we bought all five seats as a single group), it's a drag you don't have more video of walking around. Walking west from the landing zone about an hour or so, epic beaches filled - first with garbage - then shells of all kinds, sizes, shapes, each clustered on their own beach.
We made an hour long video but were threatened relentlessly for posting it, so keep it private. The ground there, walking around, that is the magic.
I may try again putting some out. Just surreal, no people, seals everywhere we walked, and we spent our time, close to five hours in May 2010, walking as far as we could from the landing site/ picnic shelter area, just to see as much as we could. Pristine conditions in the water and beach in spots, wild pigs, all kinds of stuff. But this was just a super super limited view of Niihau. Really tiny.
This video captures sights not seen in other videos. We show the village of Puuwai and its residents. We also show Nonopapa, the wildlife (seals and elands). We have a lot more footage, but out of respect for their wishes we kept it minimal. We have taken our fair share of abuse and threats. As the old saying goes, it is easier to criticize than create. I think we all wanted to see Keith Robinson;s CASTLE (His NEVERLAND) with it's glistening solar panels, Golden Heliport, gigantic pool with waterfalls and all the glamorous crap that probably doesn't exist or does it??? we don't know... I'm sure he doesn't want people seeing the shack he lives in....

No. Ni’ihau is safe. That would be the island of Kauai, and the NaPali Coast. It is the same helicopter used in Jurassic Park, King Kong, and Godzilla. Despite the movie showing it being destroyed, it is still there and flying. We are big fans of these movies.

The price is well worth the experience you get. It is a beautiful island with exquisite peace and quiet, and knowing the money goes to help out the residents, they are not making a profit. They are keeping the helicopter maintained. You can find a Waikiki all over the world.
@@travisfamilytravels7504 Where you were snorkeling, it looked a lot like Queen's Surf on Waikiki at Kapiolani Park. Also, 2 little pieces of coral. The pink one looks like it is starting coral bleaching. If we could meet folks we might spring for it. The gorgeous Niihau Shell leis are created there. I'd love to watch the process, though I can watch it
on Kaua'i or O'ahu or even on line. We've met some Niihau people as they can come and go. I love to hear the way they speak Hawaiian.

We fully agree that the people of Ni’ihau are very special. You will not be able to interact with any of the residents during the tour. Everything you see is 100% our footage and authentic. personally i dont see anything wrong with visiting an island. and leaving it the way it was when you got there. the point is to preserve the island as it was as in not to build giant hotel for tourist. the only reason people want to see it is cause its "forbidden"
they limit tourism through this Helicopter crap!! it's not like anyones going to go squat in the locals houses like Florida and from what the author says, the locals will kill you with wooden arrows or sharp rocks like a tribe in the Brazillian rainforest so get a grip, it's okay!!

We did in fact walk on the island. You'll go around the island in a helicopter and land on the east side where you're free to walk around and swim in the ocean. My only regret is I wish that I had put in even more of our footage and done a better job showing the island. We are surprised at the number of views it has received. Also, out of respect, you're asked by the owners not to video some of the places and things. Thank you for the comment.
