- Ben's mom, Barb (guest star Candice Bergen) tells Dan (John Goodman) that he's being selfish by not selling the house so Darlene and Ben can live together. Watch 'The Conners' on ABC and Hulu, streaming and on demand.
Ben’s mom had absolutely zero right to say anything about Dans financial situation. It’s none of her concern , regardless of her son and Darlene living with him. Adults help out their parents financially all the time , so it’s not like he’s taking advantage of his children. If Ben is so unhappy with his living situation, then he can date someone else. He doesn’t need his mommy fighting his battles.
I guess she forgot to tell her dead husband and son that she had the son with another man.
Yea well someone wrote that scene in and she isn't really bens mom. Lol. The writers and actors really must be that good for you to comment on it like it actually happend in real life. Wich im sure it does and thats why they wrote it in the script. Also you dont know what darlene or ben said to her to make her say that. why should ben leave just because he wants to start a life with someone he loves? Thats not going to make him or darlene happy either. What a weird suggestion.

Makes no sense. His adult kids went to live with him when they were down on their luck. Why shouldn’t they pay rent to him?

I think they're trying to reflect the reality faced by people today, where the nuclear family is no longer a viable option, but people are going back to the extended-family model where generations of people are living in the same house.
Darlene is paying rent or else men's mom wouldn't be starting a fight
@@pandulce4447 I know she’s paying rent to her dad. Why would Ben’s mother have an issue with that? She helping out her widowed father with rent while her and her kids live at his house.
Darlene can pay his mortgage if she wants to, that's he father, that lady needs to mind her business
The problem I have with her thinking is that Darlene, her boyfriend, son and daughter live there . Paying her father rent is no different than paying a landlord. Expecting her father to carry their adult weight on his own is wrong. With their rent he can pay towards his mortgage which helps not only him but everyone involved. If they left he could also rent out their rooms if he wanted. He isn't forcing his children to stay!
But they already had a nice apartment lined up and Darlene decided to give it up and use the downpayment to help her dad out. I guess that’s what they mean.

As was written below it is smarter for Dan to stay in the house and have the kids help pay off the mortgage. That way Dan gets to stay in his home, the kids still have "the folks place" to call home, Dan will have the home equity to fall back on if need be and when he is gone he can leave the house to the kids and they will have equity from the house.
If Dan sells the house and rents a small house with garage he will eat up the equity he gets out of the home pretty damn quick and then what? Title 19? And the kids also are left with nothing. Them helping pay the house off is nothing but win/win for everyone and really a long term investment for the 3(4?) kids.
Selling the house isn't a bad idea..not Ben's Mother.. It should be something the family Members decide on together..whether Darlene and Ben end up together or not..that little place above the hardware store can be Ben's Apartment if he fix it up a little..

When Dan lost the bike shop, he and Roseanne had two mortgages on the house. Liquidating the business brought them back on schedule, but it didn’t pay either off. The bike shop was a cool idea, but it was the wrong business for where they lived. Not enough demand for it and I’m surprised the bank even green lighted the idea in the first place. Even dreams require business plans.
@Censorship Sucks You’re right. This writing is very sloppy. Even on Season 10 Roseanne they really played it up that they were so poor with him not being able to afford Roseanne’s operation. I get that they weren’t rich. That they did struggle financially but they were made out to be absolutely destitute.
Dan never should have bought the bike shop. It was a very selfish decision.
@Censorship Sucks, DJ doesn't live in the house. Only Mary does. DJ works long hours and his wife is stationed overseas. She was alone too much at her house.

It's been 25 years since the first run, and they had been in the house some time then, enough to get the equity for a second mortgage. Why isn't it paid off by now?

Plus it's not just a house. It's the shelter that keeps them together as a family.. It's the home full of the memories of growing up with the parents who worked so hard to support them and raise them.
I don't see what's wrong with making some personal sacrifices to help care for the parent that was always there for you when you needed them. It's better than everyone ending up drifting around various crappy apartments with obnoxious neighbors and a money hungry nitpicking landlord until Dan ends up alone in a miserable but expensive nursing home that costs more than keeping the house ever would have. Better to age in place.
Maybe there is some hold back, but it wasn't her place to step in and say something. That's rude, not to mention that it was none of her business.

Well, you know aging and all that. Lol. Plus the whole premise of the show is that they're normal, working class people who have had a bit of a rough time of it. They don't over make up them or put them in Spanx and perfect clothes or try to make them look unrealistically perfect or like they're at the gym every day. They're supposed to look like regular people.

Is Katey Sagal still going to be on The Conners as Louise? I know she has a new ABC show called Rebel so I was wondering if they're going to try to pair Bens mom and Dan together which will complicate things for Darlene and Ben.

And Dan and Roseanne got swindled by a con-artist (I cannot recall the character's name but he was played by Tim Curry) in a real estate scam. I'm pretty sure Dan put another mortgage on the house to fund the purchase and repair of another property and when it sold and it came time for the guy to split the proceeds with Dan... he just split, period.

My grandmother ruined a chance that my aunt had with a great guy by meddling. Some people need to learn that there’s a big difference between offering support and actively meddling in matters that aren’t their business.
It seems like Darlene living there with her kids makes sense financially. What is the difference in paying Dan and paying a landlord? She's probably paying less at home. Why would that bother Murphy Brown/Ben's mother so much? Dan welcomed her son in his house too, but if Ben wants to pay rent at some apartment then he can. It's probably just setting up the show so Darlene will go have a fun adventure with the guy at her plastics company she met.

You know, I see too many people like Ben's mom who are nothing more than pot stirrers. These parents have a very hard time letting go, and sometimes their interference wrecks their kids relationships -- whether they are dating, going steady, engaged, or married. It's parents like these that make kids leave home in the first place and live far distances.
For those complaining the house should be paid for... it's called a 30 year mortgage, that's what most ppl got/ get.
But "Roseanne" debuted 35 years ago, and we can assume they bought the house years before that. This is what makes this situation sad. Dave Ramsey would scold Dan if he called into his show. :)

The more I watch clips from this revival the more it solidifies my belief these days that they should have never revived this show. I mean, of course it's interesting to revisit beloved characters to see how they have progressed and aged over the years and this revival does cover very realistic issues that would take place for characters like that, but a huge part of me feels like they should have just left it well enough alone as the iconic 80s/90s show that it was. This revival seems way more depressing when the original had its darkness too but yet it also had more light and humor. The only thing that I really appreciate about this reboot that I don't like about the original series finale is that Dan Connor is still living in this one.
Edit: I want to add that another thing I like about this revival as opposed to the original series finale is that Lecy Goranson is playing Becky instead of Sarah Chalke.
DEPRESSING!!! yes, that's the word I'm looking for to describe this show. I am glad to see Dan still alive, or barely alive. He don't look too good. They should have just left us with our memories of a once great show.

I watched the original Roseanne as an adult; it was incredibly dark and incredibly depressing. So sobering. I even had to turn it off sometimes as I was binge watching and it was too "real" as in real life was too depressing as it was. I don't feel the revival quite has hit its mark, however, the old show was JUST as depressing and just as incredibly sobering. They were living in economic low income during the 90s when the average American was not doimg as poorly as they were, as we had a rich econ then.

How realistic it is now? Did you ever watch the original show? They literally had their power shut off in one episode. Roseanne lost her job in one episode and they freaked out about how they were going to survive. Becky ran off and got married. The entire original show was about real life.
I agree with Ben mom, Dan should just sell the house, everyone is getting upset about trying to keep it no one is able to move on. Dan made so many mistakes including quitting his job at the bus depot that his grandchildren are paying the price.

One thing i hate is the death of roseanne shed never over drug herself and the death of molly seems unrealistic and makes 0 sense at all. Molly couldve been darlenes real friend.
Roseanne had to go, the rest of the cast and crew didn't deserve to lose their jobs bc of her behavior, but I agree a lot of the character choices they've made are weird and really disconnected from the original show.

This tv Show is Just Horrible. Every episode is worse then the Last. No HOPE! no FUTURE just Sadness and Disaster. The Old Roseanne they always came together to overcome hard times this is just Terrible writing.

U know that the girl who plays harris was also filming shameless at the same time actors can do that you know the shows are not filmed as they premiere they take months of filming and editing and allot of down time between takes allot of sitting around to set up the next shot and lighting not to mention they do not get filmed at the same time. And its for the same network so yes she can come back
