Can't say that about the Lakers.....they were beaten from pillar to post in the 86 WCF by Houston. They were lucky that team fell off with injuries/suspensions and there was no teams out West that could match them talent wise til the Finals for the remainder of the 80s.
That actually began the year before. In general, though, I agree. The Pistons surpassing the Celtics was inevitable by then & everyone knew the Bulls were destined for something unprecedented once the supporting cast was built around MJ (which was just beginning to happen.) Those two factors basically spelled the end of the Celtics stranglehold on the East.
@@zap_sigma1 The Mavs and Jazz challenged the Lakers, but only the Rockets beat them out West in the 80s. Especially in 86 when they were even stronger than 81
@@FuShengAlex The Rockets also got cooked by the Mavs in series in the 80's before those injuries. Much respect to Hakeem. He is my all time best big man ever (guy should have been locked up for Shaq abuse for the '95 Finals, lol.) But that Mavs team was a hanful in the 80's. They stay together & healthy, we probably are talking about another Texas team dominating the west in the mid 90's.

The end of Boston’s dominance in the East (when the East was still elite).... even though they didn’t win this season Detroit’s starting 5-8 was a sensational bucket getting variation of the early “Bad Boys”
Dantley and Vinnie J were incredible. The Celtics were getting older and were a walking MASH unit in this series. One of the roughest games/series ever, but the Pistons pushed the physicality envelope as far as they were allowed. Len Bias (Projected by Red Auerbach to be a dominate game-changer like Bird, Jordan) dying two days after the 1986 draft and young all-star Reggie Lewis dying in 1993 ended any chance to extend the Bird-Celtic dynasty, but I guess they were due for a setback or 2 after their epic 30 year rein.
Boston native but Celtic hater at the time. Looking back, now that I'm detached, you have to wonder what happens if Parish doesn't get hurt. Vinnie is one of my all time faves!
Notice at the end of the game Kevin McHale congrats Isaiah and Vinnie after they beat him in the ECF. Watching this moment is interesting, recalling Isaiah's claims of following Boston's example after they lost to the Bulls in '91. Shannon Sharp check this out!!!
The Pistons were finally good enough to dethrone the king of the Eastern Conference. But what a brutal rivalry between these teams. Definitely more hate than respect.
that must've felt really good for the lakers in 88 to beat the Celtics the last 2 finals (1985) (1987) then beat pistons who beat the Celtics to win back to back lol
That stadium (Pontiac Silverdome 1975-2013 demolished in March 2018) was built for football (Detroit Lions home from 1975-2001) was so big that the court was laid down a quarter to the corner ends and 35,000 fans can blow by security. The next season the Pistons moved to Auburn Hills Michigan and played at The Palace of Auburn Hills until 2017.
@@redpillfreedom6692 The Pistons played a playoff series there in 1984 when the Silverdome was unavailable. It was that game Isiah scored 12 points in the last 90 seconds to force overtime. The Pistons lost bc Bernard King averaged like 40 ppg in the series
Isiah was right!!! the celtics walked off and didn't shake the pistons hand. only hand shake was Mckale with IT and Vinnie. poor sportsmanship from the champs being dethroned.
I'm a huge Celtics and Bird fan but also a realist and I try and look at things objectively and your right about Bird in this series. He didn't shoot well and he looked old and slow. I think part of him looking that way was Detroit. They just did a great job of keeping him in check and making him look old. Plus of course coming off the duel with Nique he probably didn't have enough left in the tank for Detroit. I always say - Bird wasn't perfect. He lost a lot of big games. But he won alot as well. If he has played better in 88 they may have beaten Detroit - but by this time Detroit was the better team
Bird's back was in bad shape, his last 5 season's in the NBA his back would get worse every year and he never used it as an excuse for not playing up to his standards when the Celtics lost, plus the death of Len Bias hurt the Celtics
I know I may get some negative comments, but this era was just SO MUCH more fun to watch... Isaiah, Magic, Bird, and Jordan, along with Kemp, and a ton of Hall of Famers... Seemed like every game we watched something incredible happen. Todays game is definitely softer, less physical, and the types of fouls called now take the flow out the game.
They ushered all the players off the court because of the fans, even the Pistons LOL ...What a smooth brained comment, just say what you mean, it's all because of ''wasicm'' LOL
In 1988, the Lakers and Celtics were both challenged like never before. The changing of the guard in the NBA was starting to take shape

The Pontiac Silverdome. Got some good memories in the place. 😢
You can call holding on the defense on just about every play. If you played like this today half your team would foul by halftime.

I can see why the refs got the Celtics outta there, that crowd went wild.

Dennis Johnson shook hands too. That's it
There were a ton of people on the court so the Cs left. McHale dubbed up everyone that he saw including Laimbeer.😊
Bird was pretty lousy in this series, at least for his standards. That's something that's seemed to never have been talked about much.
Yep it was his worst shooting in a playoff series only 35% FG!
