    I tend to do more and more simple "biotope style mix -ish" scapes. Nothing is wrong with fancy aquascapes but when you see the simplicity and beauty of underwater biotopes it will make much more sense.

    Hi Md, I am 14 and have set up a planted tank, but I barely have any plants. I can afford fertilizer, but my plants don't grow well. I have a dirted substrate with a gravel sand mix on top as the cap. I have a little Rotala and some Limnophila. Do I need fertilizers to grow lush, healthy plants?"

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  21 день тому +51

      They will help for sure. I can notice a big difference in growth rate when I use them. If you have nutrients in your substrate though, minimal algae and your plants don't grow well, it's suggesting to me that the lighting levels need to be increased.

    I really enjoyed this video. I felt you explained your thinking behind your choices way better than in other videos that I've watched. I also like the end result very much. One thing I wonder about though, is how these fish would feed in the wild. Obviously, they eat flake in a tank but, I wonder if it is possible to set up and show a more natural way of feeding. I don't know what that would be, you're the expert!

    Hi MD,
    I’ve been watching your videos for the past few months, and would really like some advice on a tank, i currently have a 15 gallon, stocked with a black molly lyretail male, 3 regular black molly female’s, two dalmatian molly female’s, a white mickey mouse platy male and a black tuxedo platy, and a dozen of fry (i’m getting new tanks soon to make sure all fish are thriving).
    I don’t have any hardscape such as rocks and roots hence my love for planted tank’s, i’d realy appreciate if you have any ideas on how to scape my tank to make my plain black and white fish stand out, or something that compliments their natural habitat.

  • @grilspartn

    Hey! You should let a propagated plant cutting dry slightly before putting it in water to allow a protective layer (callus) to form over the cut end. This helps prevent rot and encourages healthy root development!

  • @perthsteve5032
    @perthsteve5032 21 день тому +3

    I’m going to guess it looks better in person, but the light background isn’t working for me in this build. It kinda makes the vallisneria disappear with the green shining through. I’ve seen light backgrounds look incredible when they give a kind of sunset gradient look. Maybe the colour needs to contrast the green of the vallis rather than match it.

    @frittibreezedancer 21 день тому

    Masterful! It gives such a nice look and it really makes for one heck of a way more interesting breeding tank, if you would want to call it that. Probably much more successful as well because the natural environment of the fish is mimicked so they'll feel more, well, in the mood 😃 And that light background thing; man, to see how far the aquarist hobby has come compared to when I first got into it over thirty years ago and all we had then was fluorescent tubes, haha!

    I’m having a problem with Greenwater I glued my two different types of wood together one is I think walnut and the other is some type of hard driftwood to make like a tree with moss some of the moss has died off specially the big patch. I thought I boiled all the tenets out of the wood at first, but there were still more tins in it so I drained it started over put more quick start in there, but not the cheap stuff the expensive stuff and liquid fertilizer I destroyed one of my favorite plants that was more leaf like a tree my dark green tree plant. I don’t remember the name of it just fine so is my Nubias and my other plant I can’t remember the name of it. It’s pretty common. I clean all the algae off the wood. I have two lights on it just a 20 gallon bowfront the fish that I had in there died. It was something I did they were fine before I put them in there, but I think the algae eaters would kill the fish because they died first and then I started having problems with the Algae after losing the fish the tank is still cloudy. What should I do? I dreamed it took a lot of fertilizer out that I had overdosed it some fish tank clear stuff in there and algae killer but I have monster filtration on there. I have two Fluegel number three for a 75 gallon and a smaller 40 gallon maybe even a 20 it’s submersible at the bottom corner no carbon I took the tree out clean the gravel real good got all the dead fish fix the sponges in the filter and the biological bacteria pieces. I left them. how can I make the tank less cloudy and no more algae growth what should I do? I think I want to do mountain minnows and the white cloud windows, cherry barbs and the miniature shrimp a female and male and just let them breed oh and I only keep the heater at 76. It was at 80. I think that was too much. oh, and I forgot I got a lily bulb planted in there too that only gets about 15 inches same as exact height as detect that would look pretty cool a flower and leaves, I even glued Anubis on the wood
