Patents have just leaked of Suzuki working on what looks to be an EFI version of the DRZ400. How legitimate is the news? Is their actually a chance we will see a brand new DRZ400 from Suzuki for 2025. Will it have 6 speeds and ABS? Lets find out.

The sticker designer must be so happy, he was alone in the DRZ RnD department for 25 years!!
😆
😂
Such a beautiful and perfect comment. I applaud you my friend.
😂
👍
I would be OK if stuck with 5 gears, just make 1st , 2nd and 3rd closer and stretch 4th and 5th for better road riding 😀 😅🍺
👍🍻
Exactly 1st 3 gears for off-road top 2 road gears . And still hoping they keep it ride by cable. I can't stand fly by wire . Modes I can care less about . Due to it's always set for full beans mode anyway . Rain mode ? really ! Radiator, I get it . But I'll give up some ponies not to have one . One thing I've learned less is better in the woods . On board computers, nah . Yeah, it's nice when it works . Only electronics I'm forced to have are abs shut off, and fuel injection keep the other crap . I don't need heated crap just to jack up a price and really I don't need abs as well . Motor, frame and all the other little things that holds this stuff together that we call a bike is all what is needed. Keep the tech and put a suspension on it for crying out loud ....
Agree with the gearing - 5 is fine if they stretch 4th and 5th. I’d also want a bigger fuel tank as stock.
❤
@brianrahuba6919 agreed. 5 gears with stretched top 2 or 6 if you must Suxuki, Showa suspension fully adjustable front and rear, bigger tank, and just keep it simple. No to unnecessary electronics or distracting multi-coloured, touch screen dash. They could stick analogue dials on it for me as long as it's bullet proof reliable, easy to work on, and priced right 🙏
Suzuki LTZ 400 quad has the same engine, and it has EFI and 6 gears (5+reverse) so the possibility that new DRZ will have 6 gears is higher than it was for Gen3 KLR.
I had that quad , it was awesome, except the front shocks, they were junk
I wish my KLR had either Reverse or 6th xD
I always thought the quad had a high maintenance mx type motor. Am I wrong?
@@KingFriday274 drz 400 is super reliable , the 450 ltz Suzuki is a higher maintenance race Quad, whole different animal
@@KingFriday274 it ran the DRZ E 12:1 piston, cam, etc.
I was about to pull the trigger on a KLX300 so i'll wait to see if the DRZ400 will be an option. As you mentioned, EFI, 6 speed and switchable ABS and that would hit my sweet spot, if the weight is right.
Yup if they keep it at 320lbs should be good
Hope they make it a 500cc, that is the sweet spot for a DP bike.
Don't know about that, but I do know my 250 is not enough, my klx300 was almost enough, and my 650 was way too much.
All depends on the terrain and the distance of your rides based on where you live, 650 is the sweet spot for me but a 400 would be better in the woods
Us boomers need lighter, high quality, moderately priced, Japanese options. The market likely exists. I love my vstrom but getting too heavy. If I trusted KTM I would have already switched.
If it aint broke, don't fix it...Carb and cable can be fixed anywhere; Lean it out for ADR and have a 'power up, off road only' Carb kit as a spare part; 450-500cc, 6 speed, cushdrive hub on supermoto and enduro; Adjustable USD forks and fully adjustable rear shock; maybe a bit of a fairing and a bigger tank with a decent seat....sell 'em by the truck load...oh, and put the kickstarter back on.
Sure you can fix carb and cable anywhere but you can't ride it anywhere either. Plenty of existing DRZs, big bore kits and suspension upgrades if you want that but any change to get 6 speed won't be grandfathered in so you'll have to put up with EFI or 5 speed....them the breaks
@@visualagnosia4179 "can't ride it anywhere"...and the rest of your comment makes no sense; Come back when you have something logical to comment with.
They should make it a DRZ 450!
Sounds like the Kove 450 has finally woken the sleeping giant. 6 speed would be good, 50 more cc, and a decebt dash, whether that's TFT or not.
Kove, Ibex, the new Himalayan, they're all pushing the older brands to actually update things. Wouldn't surprise me to see a DRZ450 and maybe DRZ450-ADV version in addition to the -SM
It was the EPA getting muzzled 2 months ago that did this. Suzuki wasnt going to spend the crazy $ to try and meet their Nazi level regulations. Kove, Beta etc are smaller companies that dont sell so many bikes/per capita so the latter EPA rules said they didnt have to meet such high emission standards as larger companies.
I don’t want a TFT on a dual sport. Simple is best. TFT’s are more expensive when they break. Fine on an ADV or street bike.
Ok, I'm stupidly excited about this!!
Just hope they can keep the weight down.
Likewise 😎
why? like you're going to compete or something
oh, and calm your titz, you're not a child ffs
The DRZ400 needs USD forks, EFI, and a 6-speed. Then we're good.
This comment 👌
and more torque and power but with emission regulation it won't happens
@@MrNaxen Yep you are probably right
💯 come on now! It's about damn time.
Why usd forks? I like the flex of traditional.
I got the 1st DRZ “S” model to hit my dealer in June of 2000. After break in, added RaceTech suspension (SX spring rate!), emulators, & valving. Then Yosh pipe, cam & igniter box w/ Wiseco piston & jet kit. RM “tall” seat foam & high Pro-taper bars to fit me & called it good!
24 years later, the DS world has changed drastically, & I’ve done it All on this bike.
Multiple “Alpine Loops”(once two up!), Super-Moto wheels in 2004, but nothing compares to beating your Arkansas Dirt Rider club members on the AHRMA grass track race course, that I got to lay out with the late, great Dick Mann! R.I.P.!
Please bring to UK, it will sell thousands, with me first in the queue.
I agree, we want it in the uk
EFI would mean it could be sold in the UK and in the EU. We might just take a hit on the power output, but the aftermarket can deal with that.
🙏
Agree with you completely. This isnt a race bike and doesn't need to be totally redisigned..
I’m a Honda guy, but 6 gears and EFI would really make me interested in this
Nice bit of thought put into this Solid.
When Kawasaki sent me a survey about future KLR models after I bought a 2018 KLR, I gave them the advice of updating it minimally. Keep it inexpensive, and allow the aftermarket to cater to garage mechanics.
I think that is “solid” advice for Suzuki with the DRZ 400.
Hi Pinkie.A DRZ 400 fuel injected model be awesome or a 500.A updated 650DRZ with ABS EFI be great too. They are a Legendary Status dual sports bike & Companies like Acerbis make larger tanks etc.Needs ABS EFI to be road legal.
@@ruahinesrider FUCK ABS EFI
Drawing is also showing upside down forks.
The SM model always had the USD forks. Also a different swingarm with a block/bolt chain adjuster
Probably right off the sm model.
That would be great, imagine other manufacturer follow, XR650, Yamaha XT ect ... :)
Owned for 5 years and loved it.
Styling wise they're somewhat timeless. They've always been a "nice" looking bike. Nothing exciting, but not ugly either.
Modern lighting and modern forks wouldn't go astray, but if they only added EFI and ideally a 6 speed, they'd be a great little dual sport
New shocks without the ugly crinkles
Except the headlight (ez fix) and GIANT rear fender. Again, ez fix.
So, I just checked a local dealers Suzuki inventory and they are deeply discounting the several DR-Z400's that they have in stock which they NEVER do. Other Suzuki models that they have listed are not discounted at all. Could this be a sign? Hmmmm.
Don't start any sentence with "so" and never, ever use "hmmmm" anywhere. Never use ALL CAPS in a comment. All of this is what adult men never do. Man up.
@@clvrswine F.O.!
DRZ-550 please, 16+L tank, Fisher style seat, wide range gear box and decent suspension. A guy can hope.
Don't give me hope bud
Amen!
They might as well compete with KTM's 690 while there at it then. 70hp, quick shifter.....why not heated grips, cruise control and rider modes. Maybe one of Hondas DCT auto transmissions.
How about a DRZ 400 with 6 gears, EFI and decent suspension first.
@@nathanf1934 It's funny that you mention the 690. That's what I think the market is missing, a lesser tuned Japanese alternative to the 690 that has decent service intervals.
Just get a honda cb500x at that point
Nice work Solid! 🍻 Keen to see if this idea of 2025 DRZ goes anywhere.
Fingers crossed 🤞 but it’s early days
Proud DRZ owner here. I can't imagine changing any of this bike without making it a 450 or 500, EFI and having 6 gears.
400 would be good tho. not really a 400cc dual sport that isnt a weird brand. all 350s and 450s and 500s
This could be an excellent seller for Suzuki…if it doesn’t weigh 400 lbs and make 12 hp.
I can hear the complaints already...weight...as the Cat/Converter and ABS isn't light, what needs to be fitted these days, and what's in the patents filed!
I see some comments about suspension and tech. I hope it is almost the same, but with efi and switchable abs. A 6 speed would be great. But its certainly not a deal breaker. And I doubt we will get it. Im not a big fan of uspide down forks for non race bikes. Conventionals seem to go through seals a lot less. And with a good sus tuner those DRZ's can be turned into proper trail weapons.
The only other change i would like to see is a neater, clearer speedo and handle bar setup
I like Suzuki but they're always dead last to upgrade their grandfathered models. I'd like them to make a 500 cc version with EFI, upgraded suspension and a six speed gearbox but keep the weight and price low. It'd be great if they offered a dual sport model, supermoto, and a lightweight off road oriented adventure model with a 4-5 gallon fuel tank and large rear rack.
EFI, 6 speed trans, upgraded suspension, switchable ABS, make it a 450 and I might actually replace my DR350. I'll never give up my 650 though!😂
Considering Kawi were happy to do a minimal update to the KLX250s to a 300 without ABS I think Suzuki will be happy with just the American and Asian market to get a good return for minimum investment. Those that know their history know the DRZ400 was actually a joint venture with Kawi and there used to be a KLX400
With how popular the 300 to 450 dual sport bikes are now …..yeah good timing on Suzuki
A new EFI DRZ is probable. 6 speed, not a chance. They’ll stick with the proven 5.
New all around LED lighting is a must. Update the suspenders ✔️
I’d love to see them incorporate the Trail Tech Voyager like Beta did. Having gps on a DS bike is a must. Trail Tech makes it easy.
The only thing I can say about Suzuki is first shame on you, and the big question is I would maybe suggest that because Enfield 450 Him and the CF Moto 450MT are doing so well sales of bigger models have dropped they kind of had to do something. I been waiting for the Suzuki for ages well Suzuki you snooze you kind of loose, I will probably get the CF Moto 450MT end of the year, I rode my friends Honda CRF 300 Rally and rented and borrowed a Kawasaki x300 Vers and I had the Kawasaki pegged as the winner until I rode the 450 MT the engine is almost on point with the cc and great on the road for touring for me anyway.
Ey solid, you probably have seen a modded drz with rally fairing, safari tank and pannier racks. There are a few second hand around. Imagine Suzuki following honda with the 300 platform and releasing a drz400 like current but EFI, and abs (switchable) and a factory rally version, with bigger fairing and fuel tank.
When I was buying a bike, I would have taken the DRZ more seriously if it weighed a bit less, were more modernized, and had EFI. I ended up getting a CRF300L Rally, because despite what people say, it checked the most boxes.
Well it would be nice. But by law if they change it, it will have to have Antilock brakes. Its the law on any bike over about 300lbs. So it will be required to have it...if it does get made. Im a huge fan of the DRZ. I have worked on and rebuilt tons of rhem...all for free, like you said .no brainer to work on. I doubt a 6-speed is in the works. But maybe that wide ratio gearing from ACT that already exists. I would have to see more to even begin to believe it though. But we will need to see a lot more before i would beleive they actually are making some changes. May be dump the DRZ400 and the DR650 and make a DR-Z500. That would be more believable to me. Would for sure makes more sense to me. As they stopped sending the DR650 to several countries already. So make sense to dump both and come out with a 500cc. Time will tell.
My 2023 klx300 is 300 pounds and has no abs. I would love a 6speed and efi. My first bike was a drz400. My the better ktm690, ducati hypermotard 698. I think I will buy the ducati hypermotard in 2 year. In 2025 year I will buy a suzuki gsxr1000r. For the past 3 year I been buying a new bike every year. This year was a yamaha r3. I need a bigger garage.
@@jessemeanlt1 yes. Its an addicting habbit. Been riding since i was 15. Bought the 1986 ninja 600R in 1987. Went to the track soon after. Road raced up an down the west coast for years. It will be dead in the water UNLESS it gets a 6th gear/ bigger tank, some electronics and about 100 more cc....
Efi, 6th gear and 500cc and I will buy it yesterday. Yes I know it probably won’t be bumped up in cc but I can dream.
I'm in the UK, if it happens, I doubt it'll come to Europe unfortunately. And I'll be gutted😢
If the drz400 gets efi it’s the bike I’ll want! I have a dr200 which was by no means my long term bike but I don’t know what I want next! I’ve thought about pretty much every possible option but still haven’t decided what I want my next bike to be
I'd be totally fine with a nearly identical design compared to the current DRZ.
Air filter changes are easy. Other maintenance is easy as well.
I even like the digital dash. Having a forward and backward adjustable trip meters, and TWO of them is awesome. The instrumentation was cutting edge when it came out in 2000. It was DESIGNED for people that participate in a lot of dual sport events by having the ability to adjust the trip meters.
All of the above is why I have kept the 2002 DRZ S that I've owned since 2006.
I much prefer it for a long, all day ride on dirt roads compared to my KTM 450 EXC-F
If true, this is good news. Honda CRF250L owner here, which has EFI and 6 gears 😋
Everything has EFI and 6 speed, Suzuki are stuck in the past.
@@MaverickAus the first 6 speed motorcycle was the 1965 suzuki hustler.
for a 6 speed to be as strong as a 5 speed the engine has to be wider.
a 400cc can pull 5 gears easier than a 250 pulls 6 and top speed is about ratios not number of gears eg a drz400 has the same top speed as a crf450rl which has a 6 speed both have a 10k rev limit they're cruising at the same rpm at 100kph or 60mph.
Needs EFI and either a 6 speed or wide ratio 5 speed and it will be a good bike. Bumping up the stroke would be great too
Another hint is that when you look at Suzuki's website, there is no 2025 DRZ listed, just the 2024.
There IS however a 2025 DR650 listed.
To me, this seems like a dead giveaway that something new is coming soon.
I think the market will appreciate the tiers KTM 500, Honda 450RL, updated DRZ 400 and the KLX 300 something for everyone.
A 450 or even a 500 , w/ a 6 spd g/box , chromoly frame & better susp. damping.. one can dream... 💡💫
i'll believe it IF i see it . (and would love to see it) 🤞🏼
Give me the EFI, LED headlight and ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION. Keep the rest!
don't hold your breath for an improved drz400e
more than likely the replacement will be heavier, have less power, rudimentary efi and be built more cheaply like most other bikes on the market at the moment.
Click-bait. ZERO content as usual.....
I wonder why it does not have a headlight drawn in the image, but everything else has been drawn.
Patent drawings commonly omit parts that aren’t relevant to the patent. The patent is about the efi and throttle, not the rest of the bike. It appears to require some repackaging of the exhaust and a few other things, which is why these are shown. Note that the brakes are also not shown, because they aren’t relevant to the patent.
The USD forks with proper setup could be nice 👍🏼
Some decent KYB forks and shock, not the bargain basement absolute garbage SHOWAs that came on the Honda CRF300L.
@@user-se7vt5ow4e yupppp that’s what I’m thinking too.
Tackling the 400 instead of the 650 for a single cylinder in these new emission regulations definitely seems like the move, I’d doubt the 650 will ever get updated in the single cylinder format
Couldn't agree more, by far the easiest and most robust bike to service. The Toyota 70 series landcruiser of bikes.
Even though it has the additional liquid cooling system and shims for valve adjustments, they designed it in a way that it was simple to inspect if you ever had to. Many customers remove it from consideration due to the limiting narrow transmission ratio, and doubtful the new revision will be anything different than the klr.
Six speeds would easily promote more sales to cover the development... alas... just a dream :)
The most important feature for any adventure bike - large or small - is going to be range. Current range on a DR-Z400 is about 120 miles. That's running it all the way to empty. With EFI, that could increase to about 150 miles. EFI would require a fuel pump. If Suzuki chooses to put the fuel pump and filter in the tank, this would be a good opportunity for them to increase capacity. If not, aftermarket tanks like the large Safari tank could extend the range of the DR-Z400 to over 400 miles without modification.
That’s because the DRZ-400 is not an adventure bike. It’s a dual sport. Ride it how you’d like but this design was to legally go from single track to single track via the road with blinkers and license plate.
I wish more volume between my knees while standing on the pegs!
@@Captndarty I'm not sure what your objection is. Do you think that 400cc motor is too small for an adventure? Is the DR-Z400 too capable on dirt roads to be an adventure bike? With an alteration to the gearing, that 400cc motor is quite capable on the highway. Add a larger tank for range and it's beginning to look like an adventure bike. I don't know about you, but I'm going to take it on an adventure.
About a decade ago, a couple from New York rode DR-Z400s around the Western US two weeks at a time. They would ride for two weeks, put the bikes in storage, fly home, and return six months later to continue. They did this for several years. I would describe that as an adventure.
Noraly Schoenmaker, AKA Itchy Boots, has been riding around the world, most recently on a Honda CRF300L Rally. I would describe what she is doing as adventure.
The most important feature of any dual sport is weight or lack of it. A larger tank increases weight and puts it up high where you don’t want it. Ideally this will be like a CRF450L but with sensible service intervals and a less stressed motor .
@@nickclarkuk If all you want to do is ride local trails, the stock tank is fine, though the 320 lb DR-Z400 is already considered overweight by many dual sport riders. If you want to ride long distances and explore new places, you can take advantage of that 400cc motor and give it some range.
I had a DR-Z400S with a 7 gallon Safari tank, giving it over 350 miles range. I would make that mod again. The Safari tank is heavier than the stock tank, but I didn't find it a problem. Fuel burns off going to a destination, and if you don't think you need the fuel, don't fill the tank. Considering the weight allowances you make with a large adventure bike, a DRZ with a large tank is a bargain.
I took that DR-Z through Washington into Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, California. That Safari tank was indispensable.
Yes, bring it back with updates. Maybe Yamaha will update wr250 finally!
I would certainly like to see Suzuki offer EFI, and I would purchase an SM version in a heartbeat. If they go with ABS, I would hope that it's optional because I really don't want it. As far as the gearbox, I really don't care if they keep the five speed or introduce a Six.
I want the ABS, but only if it’s switchable. Honda’s CRF300L has this, super convenient
Dude, I don't need a reason to streak down the hallway naked
I don't understand why they wouldn't just use the RMX450Z platform...
Cause that’s a race motor
It's a lot easier to reduce d motor power than create it. The RMC is basically the same motor.. just add crank weight and a 6th gear.. cylinder design is basically the same.
@johnclowes3502: Honda tried that with the CRF450RL and failed. A reliable dual sport needs higher oil capacity, lower compression and longer wearing parts. It's not just a matter of nerfing an MX bike to make it into a dual sport. At least not a dual sport like the DRZ, which can be used for adventuring, commuting, offroading or whatever you want to throw at it.
@@jakeviolet2195 but we can't just keep rehashing the same.tbinh and then ask more for it.. and that's what they'll keep doing. The DRz is a dated bike. Its the same as the DR650.. People keep saying evolve the bike but then complain when it's not the same. The RMX460Z is a good platform that will not require very expensive retooling. The DRZ will take an expensive rework to make it a better bike.
Mx bikes aren't very good dual sports.
I really REALLY hope they dont ruin the suspension or durability. The drz is the last cheap dual sport that comes with decent suspension and doesn't break something every time you drop it (provided you add case savers)
It will have ABS. The question is will it have Super Moto ABS so we can still do sick skids on it!
If they plug in the upgrades you mention they get my money.

EFI, 6 gears, ABS and I would had: a bigger tank, for having more than 150km of autonomy! Maybe like the CRF300 Rally! Or at least a Rally option, like the CRF and the CRF Rally, it would be fantastic!
Solid, if it happened with the KLR, It could happen with the DRZ.

Well, they also leaked patents for a much needed new GSX-R1000 a while back, but that bike seems to have been scrapped. We can only keep hoping.
If they makea these changes it'll be an easy choice between the crf300l and the new drz400. The crf has efi and a better gearbox but the drz has more power and better suspension.

Now I gotta put my clothes back on and ask for my job back 🤦♂️
Never claimed to be a rocket surgeon but they could justify a drz350 to keep up with the crf300l and the klx 300 and the killed off WR. Make a efi 350 dr and be on top while keeping the loved drz400.
Give it fuel injection, 6 gears, make it lighter, hopefully slightly lower seat height, LEDs all around. Make it like a crf300l with better suspension and more power and these will sell like hotcakes if they get the pricing right.
The 450 motocross makes 55hp. Lower compression, cut rev lim down 2k, recast case to add additional 1qt oil space. Itd be reliable. That would be a lighter more potent package right there.
I currently have a CRF 300 Rally and have owned 2 DRZs, if these changes are true I would really love one. I also really like my CRF so I dont know if I should sell it or own both haha
It is just rumor, suzuki put most of their money on gsx 8s, 800cc parallel twin, they havent left enough money for the development of new bike, so no new suzuki bike for next two or three years.
People owned the DRZ for the reliability.. the closest bike to ist design is the Enduro RMX 450Z
Not happening. Those images on Webike were actually Kardesign renders and the specs were just made up. And with the way that the other Japanese manufacturers are creating dual sports by using existing motors for their other models Suzuki will definitely not engineer a motor for just one model. Sorry guys.
The day after US court systems dismantled a lot of govt branches with too far reaching control {The EPA mainly} Suzuki dropped the DRZ from '25 line up. That was 2 months ago, I knew it then. Good for them, to be worried about emissions on an EFI dirt bike while they take private jets for lunch was getting Nazi level. Kawasaki actually meeting the EPA stringent levels, and doing it in 2 years on KLR was impressive. But they always use the clutch switch to bypass rules, LOL. New KLR has a different fuel map if u bypass the clutch safety switch
I went to my 3x5 note card index…let’s see… yup this is the 57th “fuel injection etc” DRZ400 announcement
Just don't put ride-by-wire on it - then it would be the #1 rtw bike. Seems like manufacturers can't help themselves tho - yes Royal Enfield, you!
I hope so, it’s gone in Australia:-( no more 400sm
Buy an older bike problem solved i got a 1990 TT350 and a 2007 FMX650 both are awesome
I just dont see Suzuki spending all the time and money ro update a 24 year old bike. Plus if you leave it alone it will always meet emissions cause it's grandfathered in to 2001 emissions and you loose no performance
With efi and 6 speed. I might try a drz 400 again. But govscam epa will always mess things up.
Make it Euro5+ and you got my money, Suzuki! However then it needs not only efi, but also abs, onboard diagnostics…
