- Aram Khachaturian: Piano Concerto in D-flat major, Op.38
I. Allegro ma non troppo e maestoso
II. Andante con anima
III. Allegro brillante
Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano
Orchestre de Paris
Kazuki Yamada, conductor
I feel cheated because I’m 40 years old and only really started to explore Khachaturian. I don’t believe his music got a fair shake in the West due to his Soviet ties. Politics aside, I find this concerto exhilarating beyond belief.
So happy you’re discovering his stunning music 🎶 ❤🎉 it’s truly one of the biggest hidden gems of all classical music
It is a releasing opus to perform...the feeling of utter freedom is wonderful! You realize exactly what the composer was experiencing for his country, the love and the anguish !
In addition, look up the late William Kapel who died tragically at the height of his concert work. His performance later inspired me; also, the great Leo Pennario, whose recording is the ultimate.
So you do not like Borodin, Tchaikovsky, etc. Is only another style of music, is abosutly modern, thats all
Just saw him play it with Dudamel conducting at Disney Hall Nov 4, 2023. Wow!
I saw this concerto on Nov 4, 2023 played by Thibaudet and conducted by Dudamel with the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra. This was by far the best interpretation of this concerto I've heard in my life. Thibaudet was unbelievable and Dudamel was fantastic. Together they brought this piece to such a high level that would make Khachaturian extremely happy and proud. I can't complement enough about this performance, all I can say is that I couldn't stop yelling "Bravo" at the end.

To understand how to play the works of this great composer, one must listen to the folk music of his people many times. Khachaturian's works are so popular that they are listened to at family celebrations, and the saber dance from the ballet "Spartacus" is even danced. I am glad that many have discovered this great composer.
Sabre Dance is from Gayaneh, another highly underrated masterpiece of the ballet world. ❤
Thank you for your beautiful sentiments about one of our nation’s biggest sources of pride!! Khachaturian’s glorious music is truly inseparable from Armenia’s national identity ❤🙏🇦🇲
Saber dance is from khachaturians Gayane balet. NOt Spartacus
Certainly one of the very greatest piano concertos of the 20th century and, like all of Khachaturian's works, very seriously underestimated. A great work.
let's not get too carried away with superlatives here. this is far from being "the greatest". it's an interesting curiousity piece that's about it.
@@papagen00 he didn't say that. He said "one of the.....greatest.... of the 20th century". I find it pays not to paraphrase people incorrectly then negate it, it's just nonsense.
@@adriendecroy7254 I completely agree with @papagenOO - this is not 'one of the very greatest piano concertos of the 20th century'. Derivative, confused, posturing - listenable, no more.
I have been listening to western classical music for the last 75 years. Only now I discovered Kachaturians wonderful piano concerto. The rest of my life is made.
Khachaturian was obviously one of the greatest modern composers.
definitely. Check out his ballet music (especially Spartacus) and violin concerto.
@@adriendecroy7254what about “Gayane”? (Sable dance )
@@СевелинаНазлуханян yes, Gayane is also fantastic, not just the Sabre dance (which is extremely famous), but also Gayane's adagio (for strings) which was used in movies like Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also his music from Masquerade is excellent.
I love his music the most❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Colorful to the fullest extent! All Armenian landscape and colors are in this concert. It is like a book about Armenia.
It's so nice to be among so many Khachaturian appreciators. I grew up with Kapell's interpretation and feel it MAY be equaled, but not surpassed. But I am happy when anyone plays it. To me, Khachaturian is very unique. He is the greatest melodist since Tchaikovsky and the greatest counterpuntalist ever. In his music, the themes he uses along with the main themes are exquisite and give the works such emotional depth. Even his orchestration is moving. Vastly underappreciated!
I still have my Kapell LP. I fell in love with it when I was in the 10th grade, and I'm 75 now. I agree, he will never be surpassed, but this is lovely.
This performance was outstanding. A powerful, sensitive interpretation by Thibaudet and the orchestra under the skillful baton of --?????
Totally agree. Very underrated composer.
I had overlooked your comment. So true about William Kapell...one of my first musical heroes, reinforced by his tragic early death. AMAZING Interpretations and technical performances.

A very underrated piano Concerto that should be played more especially by this guy
Both of the Khatchaturian concerti I have listened to are underrated, IMO. Not as fond of his other work as I am of the Violin Concerto but may give them more listens in the future now that I don't have to buy CDs of them.
I think the Khachaturian piano Concerto is more tuneful than the violin Concerto but take check it out for yourself

100% agree
I agree, but the orchestration in the Violin Concerto is some of the best I've ever heard.
This Concerto deserves to be heard and performed much more often.
This is not a classical concerto by any means. Garish arpeggios, jazzy elements, Caucasian motives ( and there are a few), grotesque dissonances, improvisation motives, and so many other elements. These are the tendrils of this concerto, asking it one of a kind. The clarinet, who can say why they fit so we'll in this concerto?. If you're willing to open your mind to the possibilities of a modern concerto, you will appreciate this. For inhibited minds this is just too chaotic .
Lol genius.
Kacharurian is incredibly original in his compositions. This concerto as well as the cello one has a very especial sense of rythm. It's "modern, very modern music". For few bars certain music like Gershwin's years later produced can be listened.
Great and magnificent!
THANKS ONCE AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO...jzpatelut..
agree in general Kachaturianshould be played much more often.
polskapianist Khachaturian works aren’t (mostly in the public domain, you can’t find them on imslp)
This performance deserves 200,000+ views. Bravo, Thibaudet !!
And Thank You, 1oo....
Okay, I see everyone praising Thibaudet and rightly so. But what makes this performance great is an outstanding orchestra and a conductor who knows his stuff. Khatchaturian's music is rhythmically complex, so the interplay between soloist and accompaniment makes or breaks this concert. A heartfelt Bravo to the OdP and Yamada.
Yes, the conductor is in the zone!
Except that Thibaudet takes a completely different tempo when he comes in. It’s like they never rehearsed, or had different ideas about tempo. Listen carefully. The orchestra is behind the first few measures. I personally like the conductor’s tempo better. I’ve played this Concerto several times. It was the first Concerto I learned in college. I don’t agree that it’s rhythmically complex. It’s pretty straightforward. Nothing like Bartòk 2nd! Not even close in terms of difficulty.
@@danielgloverpiano7693 I see what you mean - it might just be a rough start - Tibs trying to lead from the front instead of on the horse he was given. Mostly enjoys himself though!
@@michaelhoste_ I posted my own very old performance of the first movement last night. You’ll notice I took the tempo I was given, even if I might have thought it too slow. That’s what you’re supposed to do. You can gradually increase it over time. That’s what I was taught.

Yes, obnoxious.
Omg yess that would be so funny
Otherwise, how would the rest of us know the concert is over? 🤔😂
This is the best performance of this concerto I ever heard. And I have over decades heard a lot performances.
This is the performances I always wanted to hear, and now a dream comes true.
Kudos to all invovled and a big hug!
Dear JY Thibaudet , thank you very much for playing this great music and representing Armenian culture at its core. Amazing Armenian folklore elements all throughout and what an opening!!! Made us very proud indeed....
He indeed made us very proud and did justice to this concert!
I love your comment. Being from the UK I don't see that Armenian cultural aspect but I feel more connected to the music knowing that people can still hearing it as a living part of their own culture in the modern day.
Yes, Khachatourian really thought how proud he was going to make you...
Such a colourful and beautiful concerto which deserves to stay in the repertoire for a very long time. Jean-Yves Thibaudet is so magnificently a powerful pianist with a wonderful imagination. Well done Kazuki Yamada.
Love all Kachaturian concerti, piano, cello and violin. It is modern music that can be enjoyed as one use to enjoy Rachmaninov, Liszt, Beethoven or Mozart. It gives a lot of pleasure to one's senses and full hapiness. Thank you Thibaudet. Orchestra and conductor as well.
Good job!!!! 👏👏👏👏
I. Allegro ma non troppo e maestoso 0:14
II. Andante con anima 14:37
III. Allegro brillante 24:57
This pianist just crawled into my soul with his second movement. What a beautiful man you are, Jean-Yves.
Absolutely stunning performance. Glorious piece of music which is never heard enough in this country (Britain).
Khachaturian's denouncements as being formulaic and populist (and hence a minor 20th century composer) were clearly jealousy. I can see how this music would elicit jealousy from other composers - it is 'good', where 'good' stems from an artist's sense of 'what is right', of which Khachaturian had a good sense of, meaning most people would agree (hence 'popularity'). He was skilled and artistic, even within formula - but assuming it is formula is assuming you know how he thought artistically.
If he were like me, he would have ignored everything and just used core building blocks to construct his pieces, which is what a creative artist does (and add one who doesn't look back to see what people thought, and you have a pure, unfettered creative artist - one whose goal is simply to create works of art - meaning one who will elicit jealousy from those who care about what people think, and are creatively hampered by it - hence the jealousy) (and I know the jealousy from both sides - having been dismissed unfairly out of jealousy, and having watched myself dismiss other gifted artists unfairly - out of jealousy (to my dismay and horror - as if we cannot escape our primitive selves))...
Isn't 20th century classical music a real hoot! Think of the variety of composer and their varied music: Khachaturian, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Gershwin, Barber, Menotti, Chavez, Vaughan Williams, Hovhanness, Hanson, et al. It's truly a feast, with the mass communications to make sure everybody can have a slice of the pie. Was there ever such an age?
I've read so many comments on so many UA-cam posts of Kachaturian's music saying, 'Why have I never paid more attention to this composer?' I am among these ranks. I just watched The Hudsucker Proxy again, and realized the main theme was not Carter Burwell but Aram Kachaturian. I am going to have to listen to everything this guy wrote. Every single piece.
And I must say that JY Thibeaudet is one of my favorite pianists. His rendition of the Ravel Piano Concerto in G is absolutely perfect.
Gayaneh is the best semi-forgotten ballet. Everyone knows the legendary Sabre Dance but nobody knows it came from Khachaturian’s ballet and it has so many hidden gems!
This is the greatest performance of this very difficult concerto, bar none.
Jean is such a great pianist that he pushes the tempo in the dramatic way the composer would have liked.
It is a concerto that needs a flexibility of tempo and Jean is absolutely pushing all limits because he "has the fingers to do so."
It is mind-boggling that he never seems to run "out of steam" and the concerto never sounds rushed, just dramatically intense!
Wow!!!
The best comment in the chain. No better words!
I have listened to this recording 40 times, and now I am going to listen to it again. Today, while cleaning the living room and tidying the house. It cascades through apathy and fills my house with good pleasure.
Why doesn't it get played more? Well, hard to get hold of pianists this good, for starters.
WOW! Genius indeed; I felt volcano erupting from inside me . So intense. and this performance is PERFECT
Wow, how can I have gotten to 48 years of age without realizing that Khachaturian had written a piano concerto?!?! I only know him for the Gayaneh Suite.
should definitely check out Spartacus if you get a chance!
Listen to his violin concerto !!!
My favorite piece by Khachaturian is his 3rd Symphony. I love the interplay of the organ and the orchestra, it's not something we get to hear very often. And of course, like most Caucasian orchestral music, it has plenty of loud trumpets and plenty of percussion.
Giya Kancheli and Avet Terterian are a couple of other really good classical composers from the Caucasian region that are worth checking out.
I remember having loved this when I was young. (am now 85) Just rediscovered Khatchachurian again, and I realise more than ever why I love it so much !Strange how one can be English/ Norwegian, living most of one's life in France, and suddenly feel Armenian so deeply! Wonderful music, wonderful performance ! THANKYOU !❤❤❤❤❤
BOTH ,,,PERFECT...MAESTRO ,AND PIANIST.....AND KHACHATURIAN......
Thibaudet really absorbs his mind, heart, emotions into the performance. This devotion plus a phenomenal finger technique brings the music to life!
I am left speechless. What a brilliant masterpiece. Mssr Thibaudet is an absolute genius.
Thanks so much for posting this marvelous performance.
Just after the 20 minute mark--look how well this pianist understands the poetry. Wonderful!
Not just a great performance, but amazing camera work as well.
Bravo genius Aram Khachaturian, I'm proud you are Armenian!
One of the most beautiful slow movements ever composed.......A marvelous performance !..x
山田さん、何ヵ月で勉強したんだろう。
This has made my day, my week and my month. I studied this Concerto, and performed against a piano accompaniment - 34 years ago. What an inspired, forward-pushing performance. Thibaudet solves some of the problems in this Concerto with his sheer aptitude and grace Bravo to Kazuki Yamada as well!
It is good to get the reaction of one who has played this work, Mmah. And I'm so pleased you like the Jean-Yves interpretation. I've always been a big fan of his playing, and it is mystifying that some here feel he plays it too quickly. Being but a humble hobby pianist, to my ear he plays fast where it demands speed, and slowly and oh so sensitively in the quiet passages. Still, everyone is entitled to their opinion! Whatever, doncha just marvel at the rhythmic variation and flow! Love it
A FIREY EXPRESSION OF THE GENOCIDAL GRIEF AND JUST PASSIONS OF A GREAT NATIVE PEOPLES; NOT UNLIKE OUR OWN "FIRST NATIONS"!
Bravo, JEAN YEVES TIBAUDET AND Maestro KAZUKI YAMADA!!!
Beautiful Concerto!
I`ll suggest this to the National Symphony Orchestra or the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to bring to the concert hall, if for no other reason--besides the fiendish piano music--than to hear and see the Flexatone being played (melodically, no less) in the 2nd movement.
Oh, wow, why this isn't played more often and fully appreciated is puzzling. Spectacular in every way.
Not many people can play it.
Jason is right. I´d bet many pianists just fear it. Several sections are as difficult or more than the Ossia Cadenza of Rach 3.
A rarity of this Concerto is the use of the flexatone or musical saw.
My brother Felix Hug performed this concert at age 16 with the Symphony Orchestra of Namibia. I remember once during the rehearsals the first violinist stormed off stage, because he feared Felix would literally bring down the stage with his powerful performance (at around minute 22, I think :). Thank you for posting this. My favourite piano concerto till today.
A Piano Concerto and a Violin Concerto that both need to be programmed more. They stand up with the best that the 20th Century has to offer.
Just out of curiosity, what do you think of his cello concerto?
@@maandahhan4900 Admirable, but not quite up to the standard of the piano and violin works.
Thibaudet is quite superb in this underrated masterpiece.
I never noticed how long Thibaudet's fingers are. Unbelievable. He was really fantastic in this concerto. It was also my first experience with this piece. It must be one of the most challenging piano concertos around!
That passage starting at 9:00 is absolutely magical! I'm in love.
this really should be played on the stage more often.

Merci a JY Thibaudet pour son interpretation de cette oeuvre fantastique.
This is a wonderful performance. It requires a lot of energy by the pianist and the conductor. It's not performed often simply because it's extremely difficult. But when accomplished such as in this video, it shows the luster of the composer as well as the orchestra and the pianist.

Oh well, hope springs eternal...... and bravo to Mon. Thibaudet and the Paris Orchestra for a wonderful performance and thanks to 1oo for uploading it!
I agree. I heard this live in Philly and it is spectacular.Definitely needs to be played more along with Saint Saen 5 and 3.
Sort of reminds me of the Reger #2 in it's freneticism, though considerably less disjointed. Simply marvelous! I'm quite partial to the Saint-Saens # 2 , which to me is a minor miracle of composition, though some of its harsher critics deemed it mildly formulaic, even stylistically hackneyed in its day (Erroneously so,, I might add,IMHO!) . I've got a spectacular RCA RED SEAL LP with Artur Rubenstein and Andre Previn with the London Symphony ; on the flip side is MANUEL De FAYA'S "Night's in the Gardens of Spain".
If you want a very nice "modern" concerto, look up the TRifonov concerto...I was absolutely blown away by that one...
I have been putting off listening to Daniil's concerto. I guess I will have to listen to it now. No excuse to ignore it any longer. Thank you Stefan for your comment.
I felt that all the necessary constituent elements, piano soloist, conductor and orchestra really produced a memorable performance/recording of this wonderful contemporary concerto.
Khanchaturian is a NEW AGE MUSIC; so complex , not everyone can play.

He always showed a smiling face when he played and that was so enjoyable !
Bravissimo JY Thibaudet and the conductor and the orchestra! BRILLIANT performance of this great concerto, underrated indeed.
The passage starting at 5:32 is one of the most wildly exciting I know of in a piano concerto. Knocks me for six every time I hear it, no matter who's the soloist!! Who needs speed when there's this to get high on?!!
interplay of orchestra and piano from 6:05 to 6:15 also knocks me..
Same for me too. That part is so EPIC
In my opinion, this is the best performance of this concerto
en mono, il y a celle de W.Kapell avec Koussevitsky, très belle

Of all the concertos I enjoy, this one requires attitude and this attitude involves some audacity to go with its complexity, not arrogance, but a take it to the audience kind of experience. That attitude was reached in this performance.
Came for the flexatone, loved the entire performance.
Knock out work, knock out performance!! So original .Years ago I used to drive through the night listening to this work, placing the listener in another land. Across in America, Gershwin seemed to be doing a similar thing, helping to find another dimension for piano and orchestra.
Thibaudet's pianism is like missiles, bullets, that hardly ever miss the bull's eye, sort of like Michelangeli. Something perverse and wonderful about it. Jean-Yves also loves to fly around, chopping at the bit, to see how virtuosic he can be.
DAMMIT this PC has to be PLAYED MORE in the concert hall! Let's give a REST to the endless Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saens, Schumann, Brahms, Grieg concerti series!!!

Why underrated? By whom? I and all the music lovers I know rate it very highly as well as the violin concerto. Pity the flute version of the violin concerto is not easily available because I "rate" it even higher than the original specialy when played by Jean Pierre Rampal. Probably when people say they are underated they mean "underplayed" an with that I may agree. The same can be said of Britten's concertos! And, by the way, this rendition of Thibaudet is nothing short of fenomenal!
So, this week I learned that, not only did Khachaturian write a piano concerto, he also wrote multiple symphonies, a Violin Concerto & a Cello Concerto. So sad it took me so long to learn about the rest of his amazing works.
Finally, you've arrived. Welcome to the crazy club.
The violin concerto is his greatest work, ban his ballets.
He makes everything look so easy! I love watching him play in addition to the hearing.
Long live JYT! I just adore this man. And yes, as one commentator noted, the orchestra and the conductor are equally as sublime. What a joy it must be to live in Paris with so many fine orchestras.
And now the negative: UA-cam placed ads in the middle of the second movement. In. The. Middle. Of. The. Second. Movement. Ridiculous!
Yes. I got so fed up with that I decided to subscribe. Worth every penny. No adverts or interruptions of any sort. Bliss. Plus I can download and listen offline and watch later or from my playlists. Films are great because you can go to your watch later list and carry on from where you left off. I couldn't be without it now. You should consider it.
One of my very few recorings of any music in the late 1940's. Playing this on a player and speaker combo, I didn't hear much of the quieter passages. This music and a couple of other classical pieces got me through many "allnighters".
C est très bien joué, car je vous assure pour que ça rende quelque chose ces morceaux demandent un travail surhumain de la part de tous.
I've known this concerto all my life--my mother had a recording of the American pianist William Kapell playing it. But I've only heard the music--never seen it played before! This is so familiar yet strange. A wonderful piano concerto, too.
William Kappell was my introduction to this concerto, also. I bought the record without ever having heard the concerto just to see if I'd like it. This is the first item I've heard it played by anyone else. I like it.
