2023 checking in here...after 10 yrs this is still pretty much the most helpful video on this topic.
In defense of the customer, I'm in pretty much the same situation today and the vendors are giving me zero guidance on what sizes I need.
8 years after this was filmed it is still very helpful. Thanks for making this.
Says 10 years ago for me

This is one of the best videos about square taper bottom brackets I have ever watched. Very clear and informative.
9 years later still helping people with this vid. Thank you!
Perfect explanation. I've watched at least 20 other videos trying to unriddle the mystery of the bottom bracket dimensions. You win.
i wished you would have been around 25 years ago when i was destroying pike parts trying to fix things. i learned the hard way. I love your videos, thanks for being confidant in your skills and sharing your knowledge with us. For years i have dealt with bike shops that would not tell you anything. again keep it up.
yep they act like its top secret
Have been slightly perplexed by the bottom bracket for months now. You told it straight and easy for me to understand lengths and sizes of them. Thanks BikemanforU :)
Never Fear.... Thx for the comment and good luck
bikemanforu, your channel has been a real help/inspiration to me. Just did a vid on my channel about how to take one of these sealed cartridge bottom brackets apart and service it. If you do it that way, it only costs about $2.00 in replacement parts and you are guaranteed to have to correct spindle length! (unless you change the cranks like this gentleman did, of course) Thanks for all you do!
searching the interwebs for a week for info on bottom brackets. This is the best explanation yet!
Dear BikeManForMe, your hand extends to Italy and I'm so happy to search anything I need in your videos. Thank you: I'm restoring a 1980 bike starting from ZERO also walking by your indications.
When it comes tutorials, you are the best... Your message really sticks in my head...
His Mississippi mudflap is glorious. Rock on.
Thank you for this bike man! I had a short BB spindle and I realised by smallest chainring was rubbing on the frame and I realised it a little bit too late it had already carved in the frame. Now I have to buy a longer one.
Very good practical explanation, easy to follow and learn and what a gorgeous old Cannondale that is
Thank you, been searchjng for an explanation of bottom brackets all day, and have been confused all day. I was on the verge of giving up and taking my bike to the shop lol
You're the man, man. This is the best BB guide I've seen, super helpful
Great video thanks man. My new bike today is still using the square bb, and this was great guide for replacing/maintaining it.
This guy is such a character, could watch this guy for hours!
I never knew Stephen Segals brother was a bike mechanic....
People have said i look like a bunch of movie stars.... Never Stephen Segal.. Thanks for the comment
Just for the record: not stephen segals -Steven Seagal!
Maybe that's the REAL reason he's moved on from bike stuff.. one jerk too many didn't use enough grease and Bikeman had to start snappin' necks! (I just came from watching a bunch of Will Sasso's Seagal bits, and couldn't help it, even if this is TOTALLY digging up an old post)
this video is awsome it saved my day . i had the same problem but didnt know what to do . i ordered a new Cartridge Bottom Bracket
Bikeman knows all :) Nice, I had wondered about the numbers related to BB sizing and hadn't even considered different spindle lengths, thanks for explaining!
Bike man , thanks a lot, you just gave me the answer to my hair pulling issue with my front derailleur not going down to the smallest cog similar to yours. Greetings from Bristol , UK
Great job I finely understand bottom bracket sizes.
Thanks man!
This was really helpful!.. and I like your golden rolling neck River haircut
Never know what interesting things you're going to learn from the master. Enjoyed the video. Happy Thanks Giving.
I've watched a lot of videos on the "BB", this is the best bottom bracket video I seen out of the many and I can tell you enjoy what you do....thanks!
If you liked this, you are sure to like our LIVE SHOW on Saturday at 10 AM NY time. You can also catch the rerun anytime on our channel
Dude, I hope you are a school teacher or something similar... cuz you are so likeable and extremely good at explaining.. man you rock :P
Just what i needed this morning , Thanks
:)
I've been working on bikes for almost 40 years (25 years as a professional mechanic). This video is one of the best explanations of spindle length Ive ever seen. Well done! How is the chainline with the new spindle length? Mmmm...I wonder...
Thanks for the kind words..
Love the way he explains everything. What a master!! Thanks
Your information to help me out with all my bike issues are very helpful all the best allways !
Miss you guys.
OMG everything is so clear now, thank you!
I'm restoring a bike that has apparently had a spindle replacement at some time, because the one that's in there is 122mm, but it's too short, allowing barely any clearance between the small ring and the chain stay and drawing the chain line too far inward. I'm applying the somewhat controversial beer can spindle length augment method until I can get hold of a 127.5mm spindle. This gained me 3mm, just about perfect. And it will last until the next time I have the cranks off, which since I just overhauled the BB and will ride this bike only occasionally, the beer can shim fix could last forever.
Awesome, the talent and pragmatism around repair. We miss u bikeman and “son of a”. Some of the best videos on the net.
A gem of a video. Great presentation, information, and one hell of a personality. Thanks you.
Love your enthusiasm man. Learnt a bit and had fun. Greetings from the U.K. man.
I loved the vibe in this vid, great!
Great video.......I needed this to figure out the right bottom bracket for my Cannondale R300....thanks
I love your enthusiasm man....thank you for sharing your knowledge. Greetings from the U.K.
Hope you still alive a fit Sir. That was great and easy way to explain alot.
Love the vid bikeman! Thanks for explaining the sizing for me! As usual i thought it was a lot more complex than that! Keep the vids coming!
woooow this is way better than park tool explanation! maaaaaan much love from philippines!
Thanks for the great videos you are doing us a true public service Mr. Bikeman.
That was just the explanation I needed. Awesome. Thanks. 😀👍
Finally someone that actually explained that there are different sizes, mine is the inverse, it won't go up to 3 gear, mine is a 122mm, just if I found this great video before buying my BB.
Great demo , has helped me a lot. Thanks
Thank you Bikeman! I just ordered the truvativ adapter kit in your ebay site. Once I finish the project I'll make sure to give credits to you.
You are truly a amazing teacher
Come back bm4u. We need you!!!
Thank you brother. You show me everything I needed to know!
Thanks for the tutorial video, learned a lot Bikeman
Best demonstration video on this topic 👍
Light bulb moment. Thank you for making it easy to understand!
your videos have helped me so much good stuff bikeman!!
Bikeman for u you are legendary !
Thanks for the great information, Bikeman, you are the best.
this video is absolutely perfect! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Once again Bikeman saves the Day !!! I'm learnin somethin Here U-da-Man when it comes to bikes I know more about these types of bikes since I started watching your videos this year Glad I Subbed to your channel !!!!
I saw that video before. Sunlite isn't the only brand that has a line of bottom brackets. Origin8 too has its own line of bottom brackets. They both are brands from J&B Importers.
Love the information, you guys are fun to watch because you are having such a great time yourself. Is there a way to measure for the proper bottom bracket, because the home bike mechanic doesn't have a great selection of brackets to choose from. I have to order my parts on line usually.
Finally found a video that explains it so I can understand, thank you
I'm amazed to hear an American talking in mm, and not inches! But as your a bike mechanic, you need to know them! I need somewhere between 132- 138mm axle, as I have an electric motor driving a special freewheel chainwheel on my axle!
hi, great video, could you do a video describing the mystery of mountain bike bottom brackets, the threaded outer bearing and crank combinations? cheers
Finally, some crystal clear examples of what the f*** is what. Also, it would be good to know how to switch from the different types of BB's and chainsets. I currently have a sealed square tapered BB but would like to change? Thanks from England.!
i have been searching internet for subject on adding spacer for square tapered BB, I need to push the single chainring outwards more so the chainline to the smallest cog is better. seeing the owner do this confirm my idea it should work.
Again thank you very much for a very useful video! Could you make one explaining the differences of bsa vs. bb30?
this is exactly what i needed to know.. thanks.
Excellent tutorial tanks for the help
trying different spindle lengths until it worked illustrated the issue perfectly
Thank you. Very helpful video. Just what I was look for.
yes Sir stay tuned
Lol this was a great video. Love all of your videos!
Awesome videos man! Got my calipers today :)
cool
Super Helpful Bike Man. Thank You!
Miss u bikeman
It is May, 2024 now…still very useful video…quick and on point🌟🌟🌟😎
This video was pretty helpful!
Excellent! Thank you
Now I know very nice video, keep up the good work.
thank you for this video..I needed to see it...I also recently went from a double crank to a tripple.and I needed to see the different sizes of cartridges....Thanks... How many different sizes of caps are there? This one is 68
Man I really appreciate it! You are the man!
Thanks mate, perfect vid. I have the same problem, bought a used bike which was a complete mish-mash of different parts. I actually got half-decent (but old) Shimano STX RC shifters set but the bracket and chainring/crankset is some cheese-grade chinese garbage.
I couldn't get the front derailleur to drop the chain to the lowest gear. I didn't know why, but now I do.
Great explanation, i think i have the solution for my bike!! Thanks
Craziness is in you but thank you for making me understand about bottom brackets. It is clear know. Thank you.
I wonder how long that mullet is now. Thank you for the great video
"Uno double-duece" has to be one of the best things I've ever heard.
Great video, I learnt a lot. I was wondering if you have any tips for removing a bottom bracket that's in there really tight. I'm using 15" adjustable spanner but can't seem to get enough power. Any ideas other than a torque bar (that I don't have)? Thanks
This helped me so much! Thanks!!!
Very useful info thanks!!
Thank you very much for info!!!!
You can also look up the specs of the crank groupset and it will say. For example my 2013 opus Zermatt has.. FC-m171 Shimano.. So.. UN26 or higher.. 122.5mm there is always a spec sheet for each groupset.
Informative and highly entertaining 👍😂
Ace ,thank you
Quality video.
Thankyou
Great video! I'm converting my mtb to a single speed. It currently has a 110 axle for the 3 ringed crankset. Will that still be good for a new single crankset?
wow excellent vid explained perfectly
GREAT VIDEO
Great I didn't know this about bottom brackets!
I wish there would have been a whole lot more explaining of chainline because I think there could have been a couple solutions to fix the shifting problem. Obviously the spindle length was to short once the owner installed a triple crank, but by just installing a longer spindle you also changed the Non Drive Side and Q-Factor. You may have gotten away with the 118mm BB if you added in those spacers that essentially would have made the BB housing shell a 73mm wide shell. Also aren't the derailleurs for double and triple different. I'm not the best bike mechanic so I don't want to criticize your skills and you probably solved an issue as cheaply as possible. I'm just looking for more tutorial info about Chainline and Q-Factor and ran across your video. You do have a lot of good videos that are very helpful.
Just changed my BB last week. Was a French threaded 35x1, pretty hard to find. Maybe tell us something about the different threads and how to find out which one is used on our frame? But thanks for the great video, Bikeman!
