Vacation Link is absolutely amazing! He's a little like a robot living his best life! Also, telling people that Rhett is coming up the mountain is so adorable.
I’m glad Link enjoyed his diving experience. The ocean is a precious resource. Of its wealth of services, the fascination it inspires is truly unmatched.
I think the point Rhett made about having a guest around for a vacation and that guest's presence causing everybody to have better behavior is very, very true. LOL
I live in Polynesia and I'm glad Link took a moment to talk about some of the ethical problems of tourism in Hawaii. I myself have stayed at a Polyniesian resort and enjoyed it, but my mind was changed after learning about the history of colonialism in the Pacific and how the tourism industry at its core remains a colonial enterprise. At the resort lu’aus they tell you all about how the Native Hawaiians navigated the seas and passed on traditional wisdom, but they don't tell you about the history that comes afterwards. Many of the pineapple plantations that scar the landscapes were established by Dole, who in 1898 urged the US government to annex Hawaii. Because of our exploitation 75% of species extinctions in the US have occurred in Hawaii. At this point the islands take on an average of 7 million tourists every year-5 times the size of the local population. We all deserve to experience the majesty of the natural world, but this ain't it.
Imagine those mythical beasts from Kansas listening to ear biscuits and then hearing Link start to tell that story. Gone from excited to 💀💀 real quick 😂
As a PADI Divemaster, hearing Link talk about diving is so interesting 😂 he may we slightly clueless but we all start somehwere. Link, i bloody love ya!!!
Actually I think Link looks pretty cool with his slightly tinted sunglasses! And yes, I also frequently wear tinted sunglasses indoors because I am a goblin that hates light, so I am not biased at all.
Been to Maui twice. Went up the volcano. Love it. It's much colder up there. Learned how to say Haleakala at the Grand Canyon -- found tourists from Hawaii.
Roy Orbison supposedly left his Rx glasses on a plane once and then had to wear his Rx sunglasses on a tour. He then stuck with the dark glasses for his image. Bono, on the other hand, wears his signature tinted glasses because he has glaucoma.
I was in Hawaii for vacation in May. We went to Oahu and Maui, and my dad and I went to the Haleakala volcano. So I could literally envision it as Link told his story! That was definitely a top highlight along with the beach at the La Peruse lava fields and some waterfalls that we hiked to.
I live on Maui, Haleakala is a dormant volcano and erupts every 7,000 years according to information on their plaques if you went up to hike the area on the national park. Every Hawaiian island is different and Maui is a super laid back small town, country feel.
I've been a certified scuba diver since for twenty five years. I've gone both the inside and backside of Molokini Crater. Pretty freaking cool. My favorite dives are still in the Caribbean, but the backside especially was something unique and just crazy. I had a mini freak out because I realized, while diving, I'd never done a dive where I couldn't see the bottom before and it was a mind trip. I calmed down and it was a great dive but I still laugh at myself for it. We saw a shark on the backside dive, too, I think it was a white tip, but it's been years so I don't really remember. Scuba diving is just a huge passion of mine and it's for the beauty of the water, but the wildlife is just incredible for an animal lover like me. Also wrecks- if you've never done a wreck dive, I highly recommend it! (There are plenty of wrecks that don't require special training beyond normal dive certification; I don't do overhead environments, HARD PASS on cave diving).
Roy Orbison had misplaced his regular prescription glasses on a flight to England, so he only had his prescription sunglasses. He felt he looked better in the pictures afterwards and kept on wearing sungsunglasses most of the time.

Please go back to Maui to do the road to Hana. There is an amazing bamboo forest hike at Seven Sacred Pools. There are so many beautiful waterfalls along the way and delicious Ono places to eat. It's so lush and incredible to see!!
I've transitioned (heh) to tinted prescription glasses for this very reason. And the contrast when reading, plus the protection against screens which I use pretty much all day, is a great bonus too!
this is such a crazy coincidence. my husband just started wearing rose colored glasses that look the same as link's. he tried an old pair of mine from high school and he liked how pretty it made everything look and said it elevated his mood, so he ordered his own pair and won't ever take them off. 😂 now when he takes them off, he says everything looks gross, lol.
Funn story. I went to Europe as a teenager as a student ambassador. We climbed mount Vesuvius and then two days later a group of us kids were super tired, it was like 7am and a tour guide went “have you guys seen any of the volcanos yet?” And so many kids just responded “no, not yet”. Funny part is, while you don’t see any lava at all, Vesuvius is still very clearly active lol. You see giant plumes of smoke coming out of vents and stuff. And for some reason that immediate association isn’t really there when asked. You just assume people mean like..a very active volcano not a mountain who claims to be volcano lol
I loved Maui . There área I was in was a lil more rural but still close enough to lahaina to enjoy some of the "city" life. But the different sides of the island were so different from one another in regards to climate and atmosphere
Maui is one of my favorite places, I can't believe you were ready to leave after 9 days we do 2 weeks and I don't ever wanna leave but we do rent a condo. You need to go back for sure there are some other towns and restaurants you need to check out, you right the more lush part of the island is where you didn't go.
I don’t know what the odds are that this question will get to you guys, but I would like some advise or just your own experiences; did you experience any guilt when moving away from your families in your 20s/30s? I am a senior in college and my dream is to move to the Pacific Northwest, but ALL of my family is in south texas. I want to live where I feel happiest and have dreamed of for years, but I feel so guilty leaving my family, especially my grandparents who mean so much to me and are reaching their end. Any advise?
Roy Orbison definitely looked funky without his signature sunglasses. Just look at the _In Dreams_ album cover in which he has regular glasses on. Terrifying. But then there's other artists who used to not wear them but then started in their older age like Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Jeff Lynne (Roy's fellow Traveling Wilbury) who just look unnatural without them simply because we got so used to them having them on.
lmaooo 2 mins in and my gpa was stationed in japan back in like 40s or 50s; he never got to hawaii but legit ALWAYS sunglasses; GOAT; he has similar mane in older years lmao
Love Molokini! But Link is off on the facts. Great snorkeling and diving, yes. No resort. No one lives there. Not privately owned. It's a federally owned bird sanctuary. He was probably thinking of Lanai, which a completely different island on it's own. Also, Rhett needs a full face mask for diving

I'm glad Link brought up the fact that tourism is very much a colonial and imperialist practice as an American. Because it is. "Entertain me with your culture and history!" is pretty much exactly what is expected in cultural and historical tourism. It makes a spectacle out of religious and cultural practices that have to be practiced out of their original context as if a display. And the disparity about the wealth of the tourists, and the locals who actually live there, is stark. People should feel uncomfortable during vacations, at least a little bit, if you're even the tiniest bit self-aware.
