When there was that whole moral panic about "WAP" when it came out I was thinking "have any of these people ever listened to music within the past...hundred years?!" There were songs about "another way to call a cat a kitten" dating back to the 20s. LOL.
It is worthy of moral panic, unfortunately. There's a very good argument in the lens of Marxist feminism that the controversy around WAP was actually just the current liberal and conservative feminism that is just masked misogyny. Liberal men advocate for women to be consumed publicly whereas conservative men believe women should be consumed privately (historically conservatism dominated and does when economies are low). Both sides want women to be able to be obtained, objectified, dehumanized, but in different ways. The two artists are women but women historically can be vehicles of misogyny because of their oppression. Women have been oppressed since before ancient Greece so the argument that this vulgar fascination with women's genitals has existed before WAP does nothing for its justification. The agricultural revolution spelled doom for women's reproductive rights so let's be critical of how culture has been almost entirely controlled by men.
I remember people's parents being up in arms about inappropriate rap music as a teenager but had not problem playing a country song that literally went baby let's lay down and dance 🤦🏻♀️ there has always been and always will be inappropriate music lol
Honestly, it makes me really happy seeing Link branch out and give listening to new artists a chance. I love music, but I sometimes find it difficult to allow myself to try and listen to new things, I'm so used to routine playlists and such. So I really appreciate link expanding his musical horizons.
i love that you share your music with your kids. some of my favorite albums are ones my mom showed me, from her high school years. (side note do your kids ever share music with you?)
I never realized how dirty Jessica Simpson’s song I wanna love you forever was until I became an adult lol….”pour yourself all over me and I’ll cherish every drop here on my knees” 🤣🤣
Dang that lyric by BBD is crazy. I never heard it but I had to look up the lyrics to “Do me” because “backstage, underage, adolescent” is the wildest weirdest choice in lyrics 🫣
I love hearing you guys read lyrics. And damn I used to love OPP as a kid and never realized that it was about cheating. I just never put it together 😭🤣😂
Garth still holds up for me. Not in the way it did for teenage Rhett roughly a quarter of the time, but still. I love that y’all are more scandalized by that lonely widow woman riding the thunder than Papa Loved Mama and Thunder Rolls.
Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em came out when I was really young, but I distinctly remember my best friend having the tape around 1st grade. She won a pageant with a dance to Pray. lol I heard those songs so much as a kid and had no clue! Thanks for the enlightenment!
During the whole boots convo, all I could hear was Link saying, “I like your boots” (which I always say) 😂 PS. Richard Cheese’s version of “Do Me” is the best 😂
DAMN. Really wish I could make it to Mythicon. Sounds AWESOME. But we have a trip already booked for Mexico that week. Hopefully this is a hit and you have this annually. Would definitely plan for it next year. Love all the content, keep up the great work. Thank you.
I could watch this ALL DAY, i understand this was more to get a point across, but a part 2 for fun would be much appreciated, this was amazing to watch
23:33 I was listening to this episode on Spotify and taking my morning walk when this part happened! Except on Spotify it was NOT CENSORED! It hit me like a truck hearing Link drop the F bomb! I had a super unusual awkward laugh/scream thing. I didn’t realize anyone was outside their house until after I heard it and made an EXTREMELY AWKWARD sound! I liked it though! I have always wanted them to just use swear words if they need or want to on GMM! It BROKE MY HEART to miss “Good Mythical Evening!” I have been watching them for a long time and I respect them choosing NOT to allow swear words! However there is the other side of me that just wants them to relax and enjoy themselves even more. I agree it does seem strange to want a specific channel to use cuss words. It makes me seem like a child who recently got permission to watch/listen to uncensored stuff. I feel weird being so enthusiastic about wanting them to swear. I just have so much respect for them and love what they do but I think they deserve the option to swear without UA-cam or certain fans coming down on them!
For some reason it’s really hard for me to understand people when they’re singing. The only way I know what the lyrics are to a song is if I heard it an ungodly amount of times and I eventually pick it up, or I look up the lyrics. But usually when I listen to music it just sounds like a person making noises, very rarely do I pick up specific words. So for me every song lyric goes over my head because I can’t understand singing. 😂
Me screaming when rhett was talking about garth brooks...thunder rolls!! Yes someone is going to break it down. I'm 34 and just came back to Garth thinking OMG that's what that song is about. 🤦♀️. Just to think theres an updated metal version on tik tok.
Link should've called himself "DJ Shuffle" and his gimmick is just going up there and hitting play and the shuffle button then he shuffles off to mingle for the rest of the night.
The Beatles sang “she was just 17, you know what I mean” in their 20’s! Joan Jett “saw him standing there by the record machine, knew he must’ve been about 17…”
yeah growing up in a Christian household, you wind up permissing some of them because they are pretty tame and you can construe them as a "Christian" band. Garth Brooks is also amazing! My favorite some of all time is Standing Outside the Fire.
i remember loving garth brooks when i was younger and listening to that song later on and just being shocked that garth brooks had released something like that
A song from the 80s that I didn't realize how dirty it was until I heard it again as an adult was Sheena Easton's [come inside my] Sugar Walls. Also, a favorite "dirty" song from our middle school years was "The Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground
No mention of Prince? I’m surprised. Especially because he had the songs “Soft and Wet” and “Do Me, Baby” well before the time of the songs mentioned here. If you ask me, I think Prince inspired much of the explicit nature of Popular music. Then again “Parental Advisory” labels came about because of Prince’s music
Listening to Link read out the lyrics to WAP... I can just say I'm grateful he wasn't my dad 😂 because zeetus lupedus the level of secondhand embarrassment i would have 😂😂
That is something that was fun about Digital Underground . You absolutely knew that they were characters ... I just edited to add that Link gets it ! Female rappers are lyrically offensive to lots of people , but it's about empowerment ... Rumors by Lizzo and Cardi B is a good example of that ...
First of all I thoroughly enjoyed Rhett reading those lyrics.. reciting actually if you will. It reminded me of Tom Selleck reading Sports Illustrated to the baby in Three Men and a Baby. 😆
Being from the same town as Naughty By Nature, and living less than 5 minutes away from where most of the video was shot; we found the song to be fun! Most rap back then didn't have that much cursing in it either.
Please Rhetts and Links if you ever decide to do another mythicon can you please come to Toronto Canada?!? We have lots of places you can hold all your beasts
Wasn't that Garth Brooks song popular right around the same time that Strawberry Wine (Deana Carter) was popular? Which was basically the same story from a female perspective.
I think one issue about things becoming more "explicit" or not as disguised is it opens the door more for young children to discover what this stuff is at a younger age. Which either could potentially not be problematic or it could be problematic. Depending on how it is taken.
I listened to this stuff growing up. I'm only a year or two younger than them and there was nothing problematic with us listening to these songs aside from adults being weird about it because they have to sexualize children and everything around them and it's weird.
I wish i could swing the $ and time for the con! Any chance of paying a fee remotely to tune into some of the events/shows virtually? That’d be awesome!
Her being a widow doesn't have to place her in the 40s. She could've lost her husband to the war in her mid 20s and could easily be in her 30s. And I think you're reading too far into the "hands of leather". It seems to just mean she went from having a hardness, maybe a coldness or closed off (leather) to being kind warm and loving (velvet).
In between the Sheets Isley Brothers and Reach out and touch me with Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass were 2 I didn't realize what they were saying till I was 40yrs old 😆
Man going to Catholic school makes you realize how bad sheltered kids really are. We’d go around singing a lot of shit we weren’t even supposed to know about😂
I was today's years old when I learned the lyrics to O. P. P we just to sing it at recess in elementary school.... I attended a Roman Catholic school 😬😳
My mom banned us from listening to OPP and I always thought it was cause of that last "P". But geez I never knew it was glorifying cheating like that. I didn't grow up with the internet, so never looked up the lyrics by the time I was old enough to not be banned from stuff by my parents.
Yes! Stephen Jenkins himself even said he was surprised it ever got air time because he never expected the radio to actually play it. Grew up singing it never knowing it was inappropriate 😂
When there was that whole moral panic about "WAP" when it came out I was thinking "have any of these people ever listened to music within the past...hundred years?!" There were songs about "another way to call a cat a kitten" dating back to the 20s. LOL.
2020s??
No...the 1920s. Look it up😎
It is worthy of moral panic, unfortunately. and how many of them were as easily accessible as WAP was? Stupid comment.
I remember people's parents being up in arms about inappropriate rap music as a teenager but had not
problem playing a country song that literally went baby let's lay down and dance 🤦🏻♀️ there has always been and always will be inappropriate music lol
Honestly, it makes me really happy seeing Link branch out and give listening to new artists a chance. It's important in life to try things before you judge them!
I love how Link mentioned alot of my fave female rappers. That's why he's my fave out of both of them, I love Rhett too just wish he liked cats 🤣
And wish he was nice to bugs 🐛😔
I love it! He needs to read some moonwalk by kupkake.
I love that, like music, ear biscuits, and gmm has always been talking about more mature themes they just used to code it and hide it in innuendo.
Stacy’s Mom was sung by just about every 10 year old girl and was considered to be very acceptable.
Even the music video was wild. Yet that was played endlessly. 😂
Right!!!
i love that you share your music with your kids. some of my favorite albums are ones my mom showed me, from her high school years. (side note do your kids ever share music with you?)
I never realized how dirty Jessica Simpson’s song I wanna love you forever was until I became an adult lol….”pour yourself all over me and I’ll cherish every drop here on my knees” 🤣🤣
Link genuinely laughing at Rhett saying “treech” 🤣
Dang that lyric by BBD is crazy. I never heard it but I had to look up the lyrics to “Do me” because “backstage, underage, adolescent” is the wildest weirdest choice in lyrics 🫣
I love hearing you guys read lyrics. And damn I used to love OPP as a kid and never realized that it was about cheating. I just never put it together 😭🤣😂
Lol same! I just thought it was such a happy, feel-good song lol! Lyrics went right over my head
I remember when WAP dropped and teenagers would blast the song on full and rap the lyrics out in public to see how others would react 😄
That’s not funny, it’s just obnoxious
I ride my car with my windows down. The music is violent but not sexually graphic.
Ear Biscuits is cancelled, I want an entire podcast where Rhett & Link just read inappropriate song lyrics and that's it.
Finally someone addressed that Garth Brooks song lol. Do Papa loved Momma next !
Link not understanding he can start music and walk away from it is really resonating with me. Love you m8
Garth still holds up for me. Not in the way it did for teenage Rhett roughly a quarter of the time, but still. I love that y’all are more scandalized by that lonely widow woman riding the thunder than Papa Loved Mama and Thunder Rolls.
Especially the Thunder Rolls with the extra verse 😅
Link reading Do Me was the height of comedy in 2022.
Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em came out when I was really young, but I distinctly remember my best friend having the tape around 1st grade. She won a pageant with a dance to Pray. lol I heard those songs so much as a kid and had no clue! Thanks for the enlightenment!
This is Amazing! A whole series should be started with Rhett & Link reading "Explicit" song lyrics! 🤩🤩
I'm pausing to listen to each song you talk about. This is going to take forever, but I'm having a helluva time! (yeah, you know me)
i love listening to this while doing my chores haha. i started listening when i was in 4th grade and now i will be a junior soon wow lol
lmao felt that. I was listening to them in 5th grade and I'm turning 20 soon 🥲 It all started with the belly button song
The memories you boys are bringing back!!
I’m cracking up! Thanks for the memories
Rhett gets a chub from Garth Brooks. LMAO. That's some funny shit.
"Co-hittin' that" is actually fire. LOL
During the whole boots convo, all I could hear was Link saying, “I like your boots” (which I always say) 😂
PS.
This episode was really fun! Can I just say, I'm not a country music fan but God damn could Garth Brooks write a beautiful song.
23:33 I was listening to this episode on Spotify and taking my morning walk when this part happened! Except on Spotify it was NOT CENSORED! It hit me like a truck hearing Link drop the F bomb! I went straight to apple podcasts after reading this comment just to hear him swear, was worth it
@@TheKingOfBeans RIGHT?!? 😆😂🤣 Didn’t it feel strangely satisfying just hear it? LMFAO
I listen to these on Stitcher, I rarely watch the video. So I always hear the swearing and I love it everytime! lol
audios are always uncensored
PLEASE do this again

Sorry rhett doesnt talk about thunder rolls I was just hoping that was the song he was going to break down. 🤷♀️
Link should've called himself "DJ Shuffle" and his gimmick is just going up there and hitting play and the shuffle button then he shuffles off to mingle for the rest of the night.
This was such a great podcast really enjoyed it 😊 but I enjoy all of them 😉
The Beatles sang “she was just 17, you know what I mean” in their 20’s!
Joan Jett “saw him standing there by the record machine, knew he must’ve been about 17…”
Good Morning Everyone 😁
It now makes sense why Rhett sang That Summer so intensely on that Instagram live from their tour in Sacramento...
yeah growing up in a Christian household, you wind up permissing some of them because they are pretty tame and you can construe them as a "Christian" band. Garth Brooks is also amazing! My favorite some of all time is Standing Outside the Fire.
i remember loving garth brooks when i was younger and listening to that song later on and just being shocked that garth brooks had released something like that
When did they perform OPP on the tonight show???
the way they read the lyrics makes me think of that robot mark zuckerberg trying to seduce a woman
Links awkward cough after "ninja" in soft and wet was my reaction exactly
I genuinely started laughing so hard when link had to specify rhett was talking about being a large man
Im the same age sorta born in 78.Seeing the differences between being east coast style is a little different.Ear Biscuits is nice!!
A song from the 80s that I didn't realize how dirty it was until I heard it again as an adult was Sheena Easton's [come inside my] Sugar Walls.

Yea! Man “Gett Off”, I just setting in my car with my dad. I was like on my!!
Retts shirt blends into the background
28:13 I was expecting to hear Stevie’s laugh
This just made me realize I've just been blindly belting that summer having no idea what it is about lmao
Awesome podcast
In “that summer” he gets younger and she gets older every time you listen to it
Listening to Link read out the lyrics to WAP... I can just say I'm grateful he wasn't my dad 😂 because zeetus lupedus the level of secondhand embarrassment i would have 😂😂
Put that clip in tiktok!
That is something that was fun about Digital Underground . You absolutely knew that they were characters ... I just edited to add that Link gets it ! Female rappers are lyrically offensive to lots of people , but it's about empowerment ... Rumors by Lizzo and Cardi B is a good example of that ...
Stir my cowboy chili 42:06 😂
Damn that garth song was too real as a young man who recently experienced a cougar... during the summer .. on a ranch ... lmaooo
DJ Link sounds great!
"DJ Jimmy Hat" 🤣 😂 🤣 😂 oh my lord you guys kill me
First of all I thoroughly enjoyed Rhett reading those lyrics.. reciting actually if you will. It reminded me of Tom Selleck reading Sports Illustrated to the baby in Three Men and a Baby. 😆

Rhett, absolutely scandalized- "oh... my goodness"
Where’s the guy on the lefts shirt from????
When DJing, instead of a hat, maybe Link should wear a body stocking like Slim Goodbody. Club kids and school kids would love it.
I was widowed at 29.
Where’s rhetts shirt from!
them trying to figure out the age of the widow in the garth brooks song lmaoooo
I think one issue about things becoming more "explicit" or not as disguised is it opens the door more for young children to discover what this stuff is at a younger age.

Love you both! You make my day happier every weekday and Sunday. 🤎
You down with OPP?
Love you guys

Uuu
Austin is home to the recent James Beard winning chef and it’s a taqueria! I’m so jelly!
Your dancing kinda close you're making it hard for me.... 🎵 Rhett: mind blown 🤯🤯I think I know what he means 🤣🤣🤣
We need the debauched playlist even if it is just a society thing
In between the Sheets Isley Brothers and Reach out and touch me with Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass were 2 I didn't realize what they were saying till I was 40yrs old 😆
Anyone who knows who 2livecrew are, already knows why you drew that line there.
Where are the bodies, Garth?!?!
#freetom
can't believe i had to scroll this far to see this 😂
Amazing
Kinda feel like I’m in English class breaking down song lyrics but I like it
I went to Catholic schools and we were singing Freaks of the Industry.
Man going to Catholic school makes you realize how bad sheltered kids really are. We’d go around singing a lot of shit we weren’t even supposed to know about😂
I was today's years old when I learned the lyrics to O. P. P
we just to sing it at recess in elementary school.... I attended a Roman Catholic school 😬😳
The difference is that back then hip hop was about finding creative innuendos that rhymed. Now it’s all face value and blatant. Which is better art?
Oh now Link, Pray was pretty good. Had a good beat and the bridge (I guess that is what that section of the song would be called) was good.
In 7th grade when too close came out, my buddy made a parody called two claws and it was all about jurassic park
Listen to “Hungry like the wolf” by Duran Duran and think about it.
I have a shirt that says WAP on it and below that it says waffles and pancakes everyday and then a waffle and pancake dancing
Wish that theme song went on longer haha 🎶
43:15 this needs to be a tiktok sound PLEASE
My mom banned us from listening to OPP and I always thought it was cause of that last "P". But geez I never knew it was glorifying cheating like that. I didn't grow up with the internet, so never looked up the lyrics by the time I was old enough to not be banned from stuff by my parents.
The song whisper is crazy lol
I grew up with a jukebox that plays 45's (its mine now) and I went into 2nd grade singing every word to shoop by salt n peppa
Musicians could stand to use a little more code in their lyrics. Clever innuendo is more fun.
*More clever, creative, abstract lyricism...it's a lost art.*
Do Rhett and Link know what "Dancing with Myself" by Billy Idol refers to?
Didn’t even read all of Alanis’ lyrics 😭
Where is this opp on the tonight show and why can I not find it
I was today years old when I learned what OPP stood for!!!😭
Anyone else sad they didn't talk about Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind?
Yes! Stephen Jenkins himself even said he was surprised it ever got air time because he never expected the radio to actually play it. Grew up singing it never knowing it was inappropriate 😂
I don’t remember the radio ever censoring the whole “doing crystal meth will lift you up…” line either. 😂
They literally did talk about it briefly, although briefly…
49:01 - I listened to this one cuz I felt like... it was christian.
🤣
Stir my cowboy chili 🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀
