Molasses is a Canadian sugar! It is heavily used in traditional Newfoundland and Maritime cooking, baking, and distilling. Newfoundland has its own rum (screech) because of that.
Whether chili has beans is a matter of personal preference and regional style. The International Chili Society (ICS) defines traditional red chili, also known as chili con carne, as meat, red chili peppers, and spices, without beans, rice, pasta, or other fillers. However, chili has evolved over time and many regional variations include beans. For example, classic Texas chili is often made without beans, but chili parlors that became popular in the mid-1900s began to include beans in their recipes. Other regional styles, like New Mexico chili, may include green chiles and pork.” Actual OG chilli does not have beans. People began to add it when enough meat wasn’t available bc beans can be grown and bought for much cheaper.
The bugs caleb was saying is used to make red food dye is called a shellac beetle. They also finish wooden furniture with it sometimes. It's also in some red candy 🍬
Funny story about Hickery Sticks. ( Yes,I'm Canadian. ) When my kids were 10 and 11 they had a friend over to play video games. They brought a family size bag of Hickory Sticks. As 11 year boys do,they got hyper and started play fighting which turned into a tug of war on the bag of Hickory Sticks. Pop went the bag and there was Hickory Sticks everywhere! Those things are tiny like confetti and we were finding them for months after. LOL
Man, y'all really under represented the deliciousness of Appalachian snacks! Not sure where you grew up (the majority eastern us has some of Appalachia in it) but in the east Ky and West Virginia side we had all kinds of good stuff growing up. I'll give it to ya though, the peperoni roll is a defo classic but they're usually stupid big and cheesy and that one kinda looked a little under stuffed. I was hoping to see some banana pudding, kilt salad, papaw fruit or fried bologna on that table lol.
I kept getting mad at him saying Appalachian, I would have said Appalachia snacks;😂I’m like directly in the middle of Appalachia mountains but I would have loved to see homemade pepperoni rolls.
my grandma bean loved making corn pone, she would usually make it during holidays and stuff like that....until she died on new years eve in 2022 so new year no grandma! but on a serious note her cooking was the best it brought everyone in town to form a line at her door. i miss her so much and think about her all the time and every time i think of corn i think of her and holidays and cooking i spent with her.
I have never related to Caleb more than in these food videos lmao. As someone with sensory issues(good old ‘tism) the reactions he has to certain foods are so real 😂❤
Small tip on the corn pone = put stuff in it. Easiest thing is to just mix in cooked corn kernels. They actually make decent fried dumplings with berries, meats, gooey stuff, etc.
Kris, we grew up on CHILLIWACK peaches n cream corn on the cob!!!! tis the best and immediately reminds me of being a kid in the summer. Also I am a Canadian born in the USA so I appreciate this video so so much. The ketchup chips and coffee crisp are a must!

😂😂😂😂 From Luray Va. right down 340 from Front Royal !! Appalachia!! “ where a hungry man can survive “!! 😂😂😂😂 we can make a snack out of anything! 😂😂😂😂
My friends Canadian and she went to visit her mum in summer once (we live in England) and she bought back one of those big bags of ketchup chips and all of us except for one of our friends hated them so the one friend who loved them ate them all within like 15 minutes 😭😭😂
I already love it cause its 5 past 12am here in northern Ireland 😂 and i was gonna sleep then got this notification that theres a new video helllllll yeaaaaaaah boiiiiiiii❤😂
Here in Alabama, chili usually has beans, but if you're buying canned chili there's cans with beans, cans without beans, and also a separate "hot dog" chili. For my homemade chili recipe, I use dark red kidney beans. The recipe is pretty close to what my grandma made, so I reckon it's pretty true to the Southern palate 😆It's nice learning about Appalachian and Canadian snacks😊
Here! This is my proof that I’m here before 160k! lol ik nobody cares btw, so no need to say it. Btw at this time I am here at 155k! Love you two so much.❤️❤️❤️
My pop used to make buckwheat pancakes the first day of hunting season every year for breakfast at the cabin for anyone there...all family members said the same thing every year, which was "dont eat pops pancakes or you'll be going to the bathroom, pop makes em so he goes and doesn't chance scaring the deer with his gas" 😂😅😅😂
The milk and butter comment about the cornbread is spot on. I'm from the deep south... my grandmother would spin in her grave if I used oil instead of butter!
kris and caleb:🥰😇😽 their producers:🖤💢❤🔥🛹⚡

"Is this hotdog cooked?"
"Yeah, in the microwave"
This woman is diabolical.
Caleb ending his sentences with "bud", is adorable. 1000/10, no notes. Like someone saying "bro" or "fam", but "bud" instead. I love it.
"I'll tell you what, bud, shiiii!"
He's calling you weed.
trust me he is NOT calling you bud thats for sure 😭
All the Apalachian snacks were spawned out of workin' class farmers and their family's "we gotta eat, food is fuel" mentality.

“No im Canadian I need maple syrup” my favorite kmk quote
The little happy dances from Kris for nostalgic Canadian food make my day!😊

You gonna drink it?
I felt that. (Am also Canadian.)
Straight molasses is NASTY! 😂
You're damn right 🫡🇨🇦
"Its cold fresh out the can" And your editor smiles ear to ear while shaking her head yes lmao.

we know what molasses is
True, but it's nowhere near syrup. Molasses is great for baking but it's too strong to put on pancakes! Lol 😅
I had little bread medallions dipped in molasses when I was there.
Fun fact brown sugar is brown bc of molasses. So there is light brown and dark brown depending on the level of molasses in the sugar.
I love molasses cookies, bread, etc. Never had just straight molasses tho.

Wtf!?!
Look, I'm just gonna come right out and say it;
It ain't a proper Chili if it ain't got beans in it.
Period.
I’m am a born and raised Texan
And I would just like to say
We do put beans in our chili
But some places don’t
Please believe me🥲
Whats in the chili if it doesn't have beans is my question 😭😭

Caleb, "eat more chili " ... Kris, " ok master!"
I love corn bread with honey baked into it. My grandmother made it in a cast iron skillet and cut out slices like pie.

Carmine beetle is used in makeup all the time!
If it’s food and drink, it’s almost assuredly cochineal (stuff like skittles, dairy products, gum, etc)
the little maple candies, sucre à la crème d'érable in french are my favorite and Caleb is like "is that insolation?"
But he said installation.
@@Khtcalypsohe said insulation...

Man I tell you what, the cuisine of my homeland of WV, doesn’t get more complex than a good ol fashioned pepperoni roll
they called it a pizza roll and my first thought was "and he's from Appalachia?". Those are pepperoni rolls and I love them so much.

the difference of Kris reacting to her snacks vs his is night and day hahaha
