Kyushu is where I want to go next in Japan. Very excited to see all of your adventures! Wish you had a tour plan that I could sign up for! All the best!
Ah that’s the car I did all my road trips in Japan. I’m missing it already. I’ve taken mine on the expressway for an extended period of time. It can take it. It can take a lot. I think I put almost 150,000 km on mine in 6 years.
I love the Japanese countryside so much, it's beautiful and just breathes character. Also pleased to say I'm pretty sure Australia still has the caramel popcorn oak milk! But they have a new flavour now too which is zooper dooper (a fruity-flavour icy pop), which is honestly a lot more questionable. Glad to hear you're enjoying flight school also and looking forward to your continuing journey :)
I love this type of video. I can’t drive so I always have the privilege of staring out windows on car rides and that’s basically what this video is. Yay for staring at all the things!
You guys can't just leave with such a cliffhanger :( But what a lovely ride, your scenery shots are always on point Norm. And can't wait to see what you and Dogen are coming up with!
Fun! Every car enthusiast should do at least one of their driving adventures in a cheap snotter like that humble little Mira. Also, back roads FTW in general. The older-generation Miras, curiously enough, get used sometimes as low-budget drift cars by sliding PVC pipe over the rear tyres to make the back end slide around.
My first car was an 87 Civic. It had that feature of the key will lock the door, so no locking then in. No power steering 5 speed stick, and hand crank windows... I loved that car.
I actual use this car (it’s a backup car of my family in Japan) and have some extras like automatic door lock and the bester A/C. It’s quite good. I drove to Nagano City, which is 250 KM from my city with not problems. It was even able to climb the mountains of Gunma. Of course it’s not an aqua or so, but it’s ok for what it’s made for
When I visited japan in 2019 I drove from nikko circuit to mt haruna on backroads only (in a rental yaris lol), I drove through some amazing scenery and had the best time! Also drove from Narita to Fukushima city (via tsukuba circuit) doing the same, avoiding tollways, it took ages but was worth the time B)
I'm honestly in awe of your dedication to all the awesome drone shots. I would have been too tired to make all those stops along the way and factor in the time necessary for that.
Your smile, tone in your voice and enthusiasm always makes my day better, from your point of view Japan looks incredible (those backroads has to be fun to drive through), I wish you the best, take care and can't wait to see what's up with the new SECRET project, lol.
I really enjoy your trip, Japan is such a beautiful country. For example, there's places that look like we're in the future and there's a lot countryside as well.
Traveling through the countryside is a really special feeling IMO. When I'm on the Skyliner going from Narita to Ueno, just seeing the areas I pass through brings a smile to my face.
Japan feels like a great country to road trip the country side, those beautiful mountain roads and it seems like there’s barely any traffic unless you’re in a larger town or city
I think what keeps me coming back to Tokyo Lens videos is Norm's neverending thirst for life (and coffee). His videos are just full of curiosity and amazement at all Japan has to offer. Keep up the good work Norm, great stuff here!
The reference to the office was everything! You said "compact spot", I immediately thought of that line in the office, and then I was greeted with that little excerpt... bliss!
All the rivers and forests were beautiful! I also loved seeing the rainy weather. I love storms and definitely don't get enough of them where I live. Thank you for sharing! Stay safe!!
I love all of your content so much. As someone who has never been able to travel to Japan, your videos really give me a view into a world i have not gotten to see. I am in the middle of a career shift and I'll finally be able to afford to save for my trip to visit and i cannot wait!
This makes me miss road trips! Tip, you can get a small coffee maker that does 4 cups. They’re tiny and easy to pack, and if you are like me and really need that first cup to get you going it’s totally worth getting one and brewing a pot at the hotel before you leave.
Dude the music you choose is always perfect. It always sticks out to me in every video. Super excited to enjoy this video! Also loving that little plane sneak peak at the start!
It seems that you intentionally didnt mention early on you are going to Beppu to surprise us with Dogen. The roads are so scenic, dark green mountains after a rain or morning mist is always chef's kiss. THANK YOU for making the effort to show it to us.
I'm a big car enthusiast (especially Japanese and vintage cars), and that Daihatsu is the literal definition of cheap and cheerful. yes Its not fast, but its a wonder that you can even get a car for that cheap. Also at 14:16 that interaction with the old man was absolutely awesome, I'm always interested in really unique interactions such as that!
Don't know how you do it but always look forward to the end of your videos, feels like a little treat is always waiting for me and it feel so good again and again. Love the videos as always and I'm glad that you at that little bit into my daily youtube experience.
Road trips are the best when not rushed. Of course, now I want ramen and snacks ;o) Love following your adventures, Norm. I hope you have a fantastic week!
Hi Norm! Just wanted to say I love your videos. I appreciate that your content is clean, I've been trying to listen to less UA-camrs that curse in their videos and your videos are some of my favorite to watch. Keep up the great work :)
Love a road trip vid, it's like Google Earth but SOO much better, have to watch a few times, I like to pause the vid & look at the background, the houses, cars, trees. I think We had a great trip, despite the fog, hope I was a good travel companion lol
This was a great video to wake to on a Sunday morning. I absolutely love watching your trips and this was so nice~ Can't wait to see what you and Dogen are up to!
First day post resignation from a call centre gig as a mid-life techie. Going to teach myself code for 6 months, so I appreciate your flying and pursuing your dreams. Clear skies and Cheers from Toronto
I can't imagine going on such a long roadtrip in a K car. Gotta respect that. The scenery looks great so fresh after rain, haven't driven down south to Kagoshima or east to Miyazaki for a long while but seeing this makes me wanna go on a road trip again.
Little milestones consistently is more beneficial for mental health than reaching for the stars on a prayer. When you can appreciate little things like finding that coffee and just set those markers to get a little bit done but keep that momentum rolling, you'll find looking back at how far you get a bit surprising. Keep it up~
2 years ago, I drove with my girlfriend and 85 years old grandmother from Fukuoka to Beppu to Nagasaki and back to Fukuoka without going through the toll roads. It was one of my best road trip.
I'm only 142 cm tall so I have zero issue with the tiny cars - in fact, I kind of prefer them. My first car was the base model Yaris hatchback, although I've now "upgraded" to a Prius C (aka Aqua.)
Third times a charm 😅 When you and Sharla go on road trips in the inaka I get so nostalgic. Japan and the weird limited edition sodas will never not make me laugh 😂
My wife owned the exact model when we lived in Japan for three years. It ate up the highways there with no issues at all. Don't worry if you ever need to take them
I've always loved the little compact cars and trucks. A dream of mine is to eventually own a custom kei truck. Saw the vid about the accident, really hoping you heal well and can get back to flying soon!
I didn't know that car exist hahaha well it does the job! I'm glad the flying classes are going great. I can't wait to watch those videos! Keep the awesome work, Norm!
In all truth, the car is kinda cool. It would be good for 1 or 2 people to just chill...seeing nature, hanging out, etc. I would like to try out a similar car if I ever live in Japan. Glad you are having fun out there :)
Thanks for taking us along!!! Can’t help but be a little hurt, I drive an American K car, the Nissan Versa Note, no power locks, stick shifter….. hamsters for an engine…. Come on man give us little car drivers some love!!! 😂
In Malaysia, this car is manufactured locally by Perodua, which is a local manufacturer that has links with Daihatsu. Under the brand, it is called the Axia. They just moved on to a newer model last year, but still retain an option for the old on (this model) as the cheapest car that can be bought here. It's basic as basic can be.
Such a tiny little car, though it's nice to have a cheap little thing to get around. Wouldn't mind that myself. Love the back roads, so pretty. Especially when there's creeks and streams. Always a sucker for just listening to the sound. Love the fog too. So lush and green, gorgeous.
Hahahaha... @ 2:22 you said "I'm pretty sure I have more than 50 horse power" 😂 you made my day with that one. I believe you, it looks like you can put that car's engine in your pocket. It looks fun though, probably very fuel efficient too.
Aww man, this makes me want to do a road trip on the backroads!! I'm glad you were able to find ramen and coffee!! I can't wait to see your project with Dogen--you both make great content. Thanks for a great video Norm!!

I fell asleep watching some of your hikes, woke up not even two hours ago and here you are again! Awesome to follow along this journey :)
yaaayyy!!
I actually owned an older generation of this car. Its very solid ! I went on a road a 1000kms road trip on rough roads. Drove like a champ.

I absolutely LOVE small cars. Everytime I have to leave my car to the garage they lend me a Twingo 1 or 4 and I always get so excited !
