Jeanie, I replied to your recent request for info about what translation I use, but it seems to have gotten lost in the ether! So, here is what I sent previously: As to what Bible version I use, I generally start with either the ESV or the NASB and then tweak the dickens out of it. If we are studying a passage from the Hebrew Bible, then I work directly from the Hebrew as all English translations tend to try to be a little too helpful (using ‘modern’ language, interpreting idioms, “smoothing over” awkward bits, etc., or trying to make the Hebrew agree with Evangelical theology) instead of translating the passage literally. So, there isn’t a particular English translation that I really upon. With that said, I highly recommend the Concordant Literal Bible, and also using Jewish renderings of Hebrew passages as they are much better at their job than most Christian translators. I hope this helps some!
As modern English-only readers we miss the acrostic. I am curious about this. Usually an acrostic is a aid to help memorize or to add special meaning if the acrostic is a word or phrase. What do you see when you come across an acrostic in scripture? It seems there is more going on here. Is there significance to the Hebrew alphabet. Is it a clue, like God's highlighter, to commit this one to memory? What else might we be missing? I hate being ignorant and love seeing treasures God has hidden. Scripture seems like fractal, you can zoom in or zoom out and the message is everywhere at every resolution.
What you say is true in regard to English speakers, but the Jewish people reverence the Hebrew language and the Hebrew alphabet in particular. So the use of acrostics, though they may aid in memorization, I believe are there primarily to honor each letter of the holy tongue. See Psalm 119, for example.

In fact, I have seen The Stone Edition of the Chumash go through many translation changes since its original publication. The richness and layers of the Hebrew simply cannot be captured in English.

Now, I find myself questioning - NOT the Word but the choices of the English words that it was translated to. Is there any rendition of the true Scripture, or do I accept there no longer is one to be found...is my Tanach as close as I, an English speaker, will get to Yah's Word?
