Welcome to The Sound Check where hosts Tommy & Blake react to the latest & greatest in music!
Today we're checking out 'why the music industry is terrified of bts'
    Wikipedia states:
BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan; lit. Bulletproof Boy Scouts), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010. The band consists of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, who co-write or co-produce much of their material. Originally a hip hop group, they expanded their musical style to incorporate a wide range of genres, while their lyrics have focused on subjects including mental health, the troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards self-love, individualism, and the consequences of fame and recognition. Their discography and adjacent work has also referenced literature, philosophy and psychology, and includes an alternate universe storyline.
BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. BTS released their first Korean and Japanese-language studio albums, Dark & Wild and Wake Up respectively, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. By 2017, BTS had crossed into the global music market and led the Korean Wave into the United States, becoming the first Korean ensemble to receive a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop", as well as the first act from South Korea to top the Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). In 2020, BTS became one of the few groups since the Beatles (in 1966-1968) to chart four US number-one albums in less than two years, with Love Yourself: Answer (2018) becoming the first Korean album certified Platinum by the RIAA; in the same year, they also became the first all-South Korean act to reach number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 with their Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite". Follow-up releases "Savage Love", "Life Goes On", "Butter", and "Permission to Dance" made them the fastest act to earn four US number-one singles since Justin Timberlake in 2006.
As of 2023, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history according to the Circle Chart, having sold in excess of 40 million albums.[2] Their studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the third best-selling album of all time in South Korea, as well as the first in the country to surpass both four and five million registered sales. They are the first non-English-speaking and Asian act to sell out concerts at Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl (Love Yourself World Tour, 2019), and were named the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) Global Recording Artist of the Year for both 2020 and 2021. The group's accolades include multiple American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and nominations for five Grammy Awards. Outside of music, they have addressed three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and partnered with UNICEF in 2017 to establish the Love Myself anti-violence campaign. Featured on Time's international cover as "Next Generation Leaders" and dubbed the "Princes of Pop", BTS has also appeared on Time's lists of the 25 most influential people on the internet (2017-2019) and the 100 most influential people in the world (2019), and in 2018 became the youngest recipients of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit for their contributions in spreading the Korean culture and language.
On June 14, 2022, the group announced a scheduled pause in group activities to enable the members to complete their mandatory South Korean military service, with a reunion planned for 2025. Jin, the oldest member, enlisted on December 13, 2022, followed by J-Hope on April 18, 2023, and Suga on September 22, 2023.

What's ironic is that literally, LITERALLY every interview BTS did in the US when they started to be known, they'd get asked this question: when are you every going to do an English album? Radio stations would tell us they couldn't play their music because it wasn't English? And now they release English songs and people are complaining about how bts only sing in English and the radio still refuse to play their English songs. What a corrupted music industry. ( both in the West and in their home country)

They are in such a Catch 22. If they sing in English they get Chastised. If they sing in Korean, they are told media outlets won't play them. ARMY has always followed the rules but media outlets find ways to stop BTS from Being Successful.

But we know why US Radio are corrupt they do under the table agreements with US music companies where they demand huge amount of money otherwise they won't play the artists songs. It's illegal and has been talked about it in the US press yet most Americans have no idea that this illegal pay for play system is going on. It's referred to as 'payola'. BTS and their company refuse to use illegal methods.

Back in 2018 Jin wore a shirt at a Korean awards show that was a copy of a Dead Kennedy’s shirt calling out the corrupt industry (it’s a giant spray pained dollar sign). He also asked the industry to basically be less corrupt calling them out very politely in tears during a 2019 awards show speech. BTS doesn’t do pay for play so the industry hates them in Korea and the West. Boracity videos are so good.

JK recently performed at Times Square, 30 mins or so before it starts it was only officially announced and thousands of ARMY gathered and filled Times Sq and sang word by word even when the album was only released days prior. One time a BTS ad was released and thousands of ARMYs gather ud think its concert crowd and BTS was not even there. 😅 i think its safe to say ARMYs are not bots like others claim. ARMYs are loyal and we go hard for our boys. And that scares the industry. That for once, fans genuinely love their artists music and willing to stream it multiple times a day and that is deemed as bot behaviour 🥲

Taylor chooses when to play industry games and when not to. And you can find numerous examples of this. That's not saying that she isn't talented or that her success was industry based. She had her share of pushbacks. She fought with Apple music for artists rights, she is fighting her old label with rerecording and finally owning her masters.
The thing is BTS never wanted to play the game and on top of that the industry wouldn't let them because they are a band from Korea, speaking Korean and showing how you can succeed with only having FANS buying your music.
BTS never wanted to be a part of anything dirty revolving music, no radio payola, no bundles, no shaking hands and pleasing industry important people for their gain. BTS only makes music. And they make music the right way. No sketchy things involved. And ARMYs, get this, BUY that music, BUY physical albums, help spread it by showing it to people.
As SUGA said: you'll like BTS music if you listen without prejudice.
Thank you for this reaction. I subscribed. 💜.

That said, Michael's genius is undeniable. He almost single-handedly transformed the American music industry by creating the best, most popular & most financially successful version of American Pop imaginable. In an industry that was (and is), still deeply segregated, his music from the late 1970s to the early 90s was a watershed period for music globally. The rule was that non-White artists stayed within racially defined genre boundaries, while Pop was the melting pot where mainstream (i.e. white), artists were free to take influences, elements, songs & songwriters, musicians, designers, etc., from the various sub-genres at will, then re-package it with the edges sanded off for mass appeal.
Michael Jackson destroyed all of that by, essentially, reclaiming Pop music as a Black American form, thereby demonstrating to the world that Black music IS American music and is, by definition, (P)opular. It was always open to everything & available for everyone. Also, don't forget that Michael started with an independent label, Motown, as a genre artist relegated to R&B who also had to overcome abuse, exploitation, manipulation & entrenched bigotry to achieve what he did.

Spotify, I make my own playlists, and am careful not to listen to same songs in a row. apple music is total crap, social media award at billboard got rid of that award after BTS won it 4 yrs in a row as they know no one else will win it, and that fact makes them not getting awards in other category's ridiculous.

Just last week I noticed that Jungkook's Standing Next To You had a couple of million views deleted even though it's already been out for weeks. I just so happened to have watched it again and noted that it was at 48 million views, then a couple of days later it had dropped down to 46 million. This is weeks after release. And yes, I do also notice that sometimes official BTS content doesn't get recommended to me at all even though unofficial content like reactions and edits do.
I sometimes hear on twitter that something just got released and I come immediately to youtube, and logically you'd think that it would be at the top of my recommendations bc it's an official release and I watch tons of BTS content. But it's not there and I have to do a search for it, and sometimes it still doesn't come out at the top. The sabotage is real and it's insane.
There was a chart that was going around twitter a while ago that showed over 25% of their current spotify follows came in chapter 2. Take that in. In less than 2 years they grew the group fandom by a third, and the group isn't even active right now.

For anyone not in the know, Jimin and J-Hope that they have changed rules for This video doesn’t include the more recent releases by Jung Kook and V. If she had waited there would be Ben more proof for her to include, because the music industry changed more rules days before JK and V released their music. Billboard decided to exclude one of the main sources that many international army buy digital content from in an attempting JK and V from teaching number 1. I’m sure there are other things they’ve done, besides radio, that I’m not aware off.
As far as Taylor. She get HEAVY radio support. I respectfully have to disagree that her situation is ANYTHING like BTS and the members. (And I like Taylor, so my comment isn’t anti Taylor.) I saw a video a couple of weeks about comparing Taylor’s song at the time, Standing Next to You, by JK and the Beatles new single. Taylor had 77+MILLION radio plays, the Beatles had almost 2 million and SNTY had 400K. That is 76.6 MILLUON more plays for Taylor the JK although both were chatting and all English. That is a HUGE difference.

He is 100% independent, him and his girlfriend Nova do their own mvs, package & ship albums on their own and the industry has started doing the same thing because they make 0 dollars off of him. It is so sad and infuriating at the same time. THANK YOU!!! I am clearly an Army and I watch BTS content ALL the time. BUT in the last few months, i've realized that UA-cam stopped recommending me BTS videos. Like i might get 1-2 videos recommended, but for the amount of time i spend watching BTS content, that doesn't seem proportionate. Even BTS related channels I subscribe to, don't get suggested to me when there's a new video. I either have to scroll really far down my suggestion list, or have to go to my subscription tab to find it. There have been times where i can't even find a BTS video that i manually search for. I had to go to the channel and search their videos to find it. Seems highly sus to me.
And regarding the deleted streams and views. I have personally witnessed videos freeze views for hours or even a day, and have seen the counter decrease rather then increase. UA-cam and Spotify have also confirmed that they delete streams/views because of "bot behaviour", but how do they determine bot behaviour? Butter broke the record for the most views within 24 hours at over 100mill streams. Since PTD, all of BTS's new releases struggles to break 10mill views in the first 24 hours now. How does that even make sense? The fandom has grown so much since Butter. Whenever a BTS member does a live, it's usually 10-30 mins long, and i would say there would be an average of 5-6 mill real time viewers in that short period of time. Don't forget that the lives can be at odd hours too due to different time zones. So you're telling me, a live of 20 mins can get 6mill unique views, but an official MV drop can barely surpass 10mill views in its first 24hrs? that doesn't make ANY sense! If they want to say that views are from "bots" then explain how that other k-pop video Boracity mentioned get 80mill views in it's first 24hrs!
There's a UA-camr that did a cover of Jin's Astronaut and he was surprised that UA-cam was deleting his views on that video. It just goes to show that UA-cam will sabotage anything BTS related.
For Spotify's autoplay feature, before I turned it off, it was totally happening. My playlists are 90% BTS. If they want to recommend me other songs, wouldn't the algorithm know to play me other K-Pop artists? So why would they play me songs that are totally different then BTS?
One thing i've been trying to emphasize to others that are not Army is, you don't have to stan BTS. everyone has different tastes in music and BTS might not be for you. BUT they should be respected for willing to stand up to the unethical practices of the industry. Whoever you stan, this benefits your favourite artist! You should be thankful that BTS is willing to put their own careers on the line to fight this fight so that your fav might have the chance to actually produce music they want to do, AND make money doing it without having to be controlled by the industry. Isn't that a win-win for everyone? That's another reason the music industry is terrified of BTS. They don't want other artists to realize that they don't need the music industry to succeed. They don't want BTS to set the example.

    • @7Flowers1Dream
      @7Flowers1Dream 6 місяців тому +11

Yes! I can confirm both the insane number of views for UNANNOUNCED lives(often just a few minutes long) at odd times in the day/night. I once watched Jungkook work out at an ungodly hour along with around 12million other people. On a dedicated fandom platform. There is no way an ANTICIPATED new MV would not legitimately gather many multiples of that in 24 hours. Their own YT channel BangtanTV has over 70 million subscribers who SHOULD get notified and/or have said MV show up in their recommended list as soon as it drops.
And I can also confirm the situation of The Astronaut’s cover (a really good one, btw) getting views deleted. The vocalist documented the entire saga.

Thanks so much for your reaction to this. I am 51 and have been an ARMY since 2014. I always listened to pretty much all genres of music except hate music and the "roughest" metal. When I became and ARMY and saw how ridiculous the pushback was against having BTS's music played in the US (I live in Tennesseee), I was shocked at first. Then, a bunch of us got together and formed fanbases specifically geared to getting BTS's music on American radio. When I tell you that I had djs hang up on me, laugh in my face, refuse to take my request, spout racist and xenophobic slurs about BTS, require a certain number or ARMY to follow them on social media--all just to get 1 spin of a BTS song at 3am when everyone is sleeping, I mean that that was not the exception here in the US but the rule. We never gave up and finally got a little bit of airplay but still to this day BTS/members do not recieve the amount of radio play that they should get. I had to quit being in the fanbase because of my health but they are still around and stll to this day trying to convice radio stations to give BTS and the members a spin. Do you think that anyone has to call a radio station and request Olivia Rodrico or Taylor Swift for a station to play them 3x an hour? Nope. So, ARMY keeps fighting hoping that some day there will be a more fair and just music industry. ARMY in every country on the planet are doing what they can to fight. Thanks again for checking this out. I am enjoying your BTS journey!

Yeah, I’m gonna challenge u on that one… TS is not like BTS. While she does also have a large fandom to help drive her success, she’s grown up in the Western music industry & readily works within it. You see it in her media plays, in her history of bundling & other sales tactics, in the who, how, & when she chooses to interact or mention certain ppl or issues, & with her tracks being so overly saturated on streaming playlists & radio. She 100% plays the industry games & makes sure certain ppl’s pockets are being lined.

Hiya from a fellow Aussie! Some other K-pop companies were caught adding BTS into their search options so that when someone searched for BTS, their artists MVs also appeared in the search! On Spotify was the band they recommended next start with a B and P? 🤔 TS did not reject Spotify. She is industry backed and her “rejection” was all about making money for herself. It was a way for her to keep appealing as authentic and her constant self victimisation story.

ARMYs paid money to buy a ticket and watch the concert. A stadium full of people is not even enough to describe BTS' success because there are more ARMYs who are so unlucky, willing to pay for a concert ticket, but can't purchase because they're all sold out.

The point you made about this also being a reflection of politics and media in general.... this is so important. ARMY have been talking about this too, and it's a theme that comes up in BTS' music as well. The nearly 10 years I've spent following BTS has not only destroyed any faith I had in the music industry and entertainment journalism (and let me tell you, this video still just scratches the surface!!), but it's also shown up time and time again how even serious mainstream news sources will copy-paste false information, run with shallow narratives, and basically print whatever they're told by the highest bidder. What I had suspected for some time as a regular citizen has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt by the example of BTS coverage.
Think of it this way: being a fan of something means you essentially become an expert in that thing, you become a researcher, you know all the facts, you have all the sources, you end up with a fairly encyclopaedic knowledge of whatever you're a fan of. And that means when you interact with the media, you have the perspective of an expert, comparing whatever is printed against what you know to be true - and as a result it becomes startlingly obvious that the media constantly prints misleading inaccurate 'facts', extremely biased 'expert opinions' (seemingly paid for), and does little to no research even on sensitive subjects.
The amount of times some shady tabloid or even amateur blog would post some kind of false rumour about BTS, and within the hour it would have been blindly parroted across the entire mainstream media without a scrap of research! The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The BBC etc. News outlets which cover important political news, which are supposed to have some level of editorial oversight and ethics. If they will happily print complete nonsense about BTS with no reliable source, then why should we trust anything they print about any subject?
What the establishment doesn't seem to realise is that ARMY includes 10s of millions of real people at this point, many of us adults, many of us voters, many of us politically engaged. It might seem petty and insignificant to focus on our favourite band being snubbed... but the corruption we've witnessed has far-reaching implications.

The thing that gets me as an Aussie is that we love an underdog that comes good and yet, by the time (if ever) BTS get a proper spotlight here, not the halfhearted attempts that happen on occasion, then most in the general public would just see a popular boyband and the tall poppy mentality would automatically apply. It's kind of frustrating actually 😅 The exposure here is minimal; radio play is almost nonexistent with few exceptions like Dynamite and Seven and to a lesser extent Butter (not that radio counts here like it does in the US, but it still helps with exposure). Even recently when Jungkook released 3D featuring Jack Harlow, one of the morning shows (I think it might have been The Today Show) in the preview of the entertainment segment described it as "Jack Harlow releases new music". They're barely given the time of day despite topping the ARIA album chart multiple times as a group, reaching #2 on the singles chart, with multiple top 10's as well, plus all the eligible solo albums charting well despite not officially being distributed here (for some unknown reason that UMA has never explained). Good thing they've got ARMY behind them 💜 Thanks for the videos guys, I love seeing them!

A few years back the streaming numbers (in US) came out & within the top ten every artist except BTS had this one town as their streaming epicentre. The town had less than 5000 people living there but were streaming more than New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles. The industry scrabbled so fast to cover it up & had that town removed but older ARMY have receipts. I believe they have even tried to remove access from being able to view streaming locations from public view.

I hate that people think that having a fandom is a bad thing of course every fandom has toxic people the bigger the fandom the more, toxic people and they tend to be loud but a solid fandom is the only thing an artist should need to be successful outside of their talent. As an army and a multi Stan fans in fandoms support almost no matter what and that isn’t bad it’s natural. In kpop people become interested because of the music and stay for the personality so just like you support your friends no matter if you agree or like what they are doing you support them because you like and care about them army is the same and so are most fandoms there are times ( very rarely) I will not like the song but I love our boys so I still listen and watch the video and reactions and performances and support them because that what you do.

i kept blocking them but you can´t really do that on YT.
but one day all of that stopped. from one day to another. it was like they didn´t excisted. so now i only get BTS suggestions again, because that is the only artist i listen to on YT.
and also other content i watch of cores. so this was the korean label paying for YT "suggestions or what you call it" and when they stopped paying it got cancelled. it was so obvious.

agreed it shouldn't be considered a view if you can't decline it eg run more than 30 seconds before you get the option to reject it.

In addition to bundling, TS also has a history of releasing multiple album versions. 3 easy examples: Folklore (18), Midnight (20+), 1989 (18) etc. Too tired & disillusioned to look-up ALL the limited, exclusive or bundled + variant versions/packages available for them OR for rest of her many other albums…..... I find this truly disheartening since it now forces me to re-examine her artistic integrity & re-visualize some of her formerly “courageous” actions as calculated risks instead. And re the Ice Spice racism/xenophobia ugliness:- Not just media critics but even her own fandom actually called her (& ex-bf) out on the entire fiasco & disingenuous PR damage-control cleanup. With her undeniably tremendous talents, TS is actually 1 of few artists powerful (& privileged) enough to NOT have to engage in mercenary tactics & still be able to succeed in the industry. So her questionable choices really hurt those who respect(ed) her, her music and/or even consider her as a role model.

That thing about Jay-Z. I had been wondering for a very long time why Holy Grail with JT was grayed out on Spotify. It was there one day, then it was cut to an abridged version, then it was unplayable. Then, for a while, it was completely gone. After a long time, it was there again. I didn't really expect to get an answer today for why that happened while watching ya'll today. 😂 Being ARMY really gives you pleasant surprises. Thank you! ❤️

I buy music only physical albums which I do listen to as I've a great sound system, but I also stream on spotify as well. In fact last night I pop V's Layover CD into the CD player and listen to it in bed before drifting off to sleep. The 3 reasons I buy physical music is(1) the artist get's more from the sale then they get per stream. (2) My excellent sound system (3) Streaming service's come and go and songs whole albums and artists can vanish off them.

I recently listened to Jungkooks album Golden on Apple Music, and as soon as it finished it started playing DJ Snake songs. He was a part of only one song on the entire album, so why not more JK songs or other BTS solo or group content? It would make sense since that’s what I listen to on Apple Music 99% of the time, but it hasn’t done that a single time.

    • @eileencritchley4630

that doesn't suprise me either it did the same thing to me on Spotify the first time I listened to Golden on Spotify and yes it was a DJ Snake song that started before I could change it to RM's Indigo album. Does one think maybe DJ Snake's label are doing some kind of deal with those 2 plateforms eg sponging off our JK.

There have always been shortsighted people working in the music industry but at the same time there were always visionaries who appreciated & nurtured talent, even if some of them were only doing it for the money.
Now the Western music industry has almost been killed off as the shortsighted ones are now in the majority. Racism, sexism & ageism plus laziness & greed have all played their part here.
I remember when Beyonce first went solo, her record company said that her first album was no good and they couldn't hear any hits on it. Beyonce actually had to set up a meeting with the company, she told them that she wasn't changing anything and that they would just have to release the album as it was. As we now know, that album included Crazy In Love which is one of the most famous songs of all time. As soon as I read that story, I knew the music industry was dead.
Ironically, it was the near death of Western music that opened the door for K-pop to become so huge.

Oh one group got court doing that here in the UK in the late 70's I think it was early 1979 and ended up in court and their company was finned.

  • @eileencritchley4630
    @eileencritchley4630 2 місяці тому

Thankfully you can't do that here in the UK because in order to air a radio broadcast you require 2 things (1) a Radio Licence and if you are going to broadcast artist music you also require (2) a paid up Royality licence. That Royality Lience is paid twice yearly and from it money given to every artist that who song has been played on a Radio station. We have very strict copyright laws, it's why you don't hear music in our shops unless they have a special licence ( sorry I forget what it's called) so that the artist will receive their money. Also UA-cam MV's can't be shown without the correct paperwork in a public establishment eg the pub or night club this is to protect the artists and they get their cut (royalities).

true, swifties and army is very much alike. their concerts for instance is very similar in terms of audience engagement. they know every song by heart. and both BTS and taylor swifts tickets is way higher than any other artist in the world. i saw ticket master reselling tickets for 42k that´s insane. and last time both Suga from BTS and taylor swift had concerts ticketmaster was also reselling, and two lawfirms contacted army and swifts because they where looking for witnesses so that they could bring ticketmaster to curt.
but we never heard from them again. so i think they backed away. because ticktmaster has monopoly on concert tickets.

The western music industry doesn’t understand the dedication of Kpop fans, and BTS is the strongest example on this because the fans know our/their dedication and it makes it so easy to spot the injustice as it happens live.
“It’s unnatural for someone to stream a song that many times in a short period” - yes for WESTERN ARTISTS, not for Kpop.
But even their attempts to put western artists on the same playing field as BTS by manipulating the BTS fandoms efforts, they still don’t measure up.
It’s sad that the industry isn’t grabbing on to new ways that can make more money, since they are instead focusing on “defending” their share of what they believe is “their” industry.
