      Just a heads up. A native speaker would have probably used "My English has improved". Using "has" changes the phrase from simple past tense(an action that happened in the past and is done) to present perfect tense. Present perfect tense is used to indicate a past action that has consequences that still effect you in the present. Because your improved English is helping you in the present but happened in the past, you want to use present perfect tense "has improved".

    Thank you for including the dangers of lab gloves with fuming nitric. I've been burned many times with fuming nitric on bare skin and it never results in much more than a 1st degree burn if washed quickly. I actually proved to a fellow amature chemist what nitric does by placing a tiny drop on the back of one finger for 60 seconds. Felt like lemon juice in a paper cut and did blister, but my finger did not dissolve. Much better to not have burning plastic on your hand!

    • @davidallen9459
      @davidallen9459 9 років тому +1

      +rajesh shahi rajesh shahi No, hydrochloric acid only comes in lower concentrations (in the neighborhood of 30%), so your nitric acid would be diluted with a lot of water. Even if you maintained the temperature under the boiling point of water, the nitric acid would form an azetrope, and you concentration wouldn't get much higher than what you can get commercially. That and there's also probably chlorine contamination or whatever, but I'm not a professional chemist, so don't quote me on that :)

    I use PVC gloves. I didn't try to put it into a beaker and left for a while, but direct contact is safe enough to have time to wash them on hands in the water without any visible damage. PVC is not very elastic and it's not hard to tear them, but they are as cheap as nitrile and handled with caution are fine complement to nitrile ones.

    can I use HCL instead on H2S04, HCL is much more easier obtainable at Home Depot or something, will it affect the cocnc. of the HN03 yield?, also wouldn't most of the yield be lost during the process because of NO2 escaping the nitric acid and mostly water being in the collection flask?

    • @queenelizabethii3606
      @queenelizabethii3606 9 років тому +1

      Sulphuric acid is available in many Home Depots as drain cleaner, just make sure it says sulphuric acid. You can just boil the excess water off and complete the reaction with it. If you can't get ahold of sulphuric and only have hcl, I'd recommend watching nurdrage's video on making nitric acid, the process is a bit different and the yield is lower but it's better than nothing.

    something i'd like to point out- while latex or nitrile gloves won't last long against concentrated or fuming nitric acid, good lab practice dictates that if you even think you might have any spill on your gloves, you must immediately remove and replace them. as such, the gloves aren't so much resisting indefinitely, but rather just buying you a few extra seconds (much longer than it takes to remove the gloves).

    Hey ! I hope someone will find the time to answer me :p : In this video you show us how to make highly concentrated Nitric acid and in another video you told that acid were most of the time diluted with water ... So I was wondering , knowing that boiling temp of nitric acid is 121°C and water 100 °C, why not simply boil off the water to "purify" the acid ? Would the reaction produce toxic fumes or something like that ? or is it just not how it works ?
    Thanks for reading and hoping for an answer :p

      The boiling point of nitric acid is 83°C and forms an azeotrope with 68% nitric acid and 32% water by mass. So you can boil it theoretically to that concentration but any further boiling wouldn't increase the concentration.

      I was under the impression that the nitrate stump remover was harder to get in Canada. Are you saying you can get it as long as you order it directly from the store?
      Anyways, there is actually a hydroponics store near my house where you can get potassium nitrate fertilizer (along with 25% H2O2 amongst other things) as long as you explain to them why you need it (I always just said I'm a chemistry student) they'll usually be fine with selling you it. So if you have anything like that near you it's worth a shot.

    If I react sulfuric acid and sodium nitrate yielding a distillate of fuming nitric acid, what am I left with in my boiling flask? Is it sodium metabisulfite or sodium bisulfate? What can I use this leftover molten salt for and how can I remove it from glassware without recrystallization occurring. It's a huge pain in the .

    • @Franklin-jj4jz

      It is sodium bisulfate (sodium hydrogen sulfate). It's water soluble, so just rinse the flask with cold water.

      Pulmonary adema is a life-threatening condition. As in, if you had it "way back in elementary school", you would have died. Like, bleeding through your lungs, coughing up whole chunks life-threatening.

    can this be scaled up linearly or does the ratio of acid to salt change for larger batches ?

    • @MedChemist1
      @MedChemist1 8 років тому

      Scaling up any chemistry is risky unless you really know what you are doing (i.e. are a chemical engineer), the ratios would remain the same but heating and cooling take much longer not to mention that a small flask loses much more heat in proportion to a large one, so thermal runaways are always a danger with scaling up not to mention many other problems that I wouldn't know. It's *much* safer to stick to millimolar scale. chemists leave scaling up to chemical engineers and specialised process chemists.

    • @196Stefan2
      @196Stefan2 9 років тому

      +razie85 You can use almost every nitrate salt, but calcium nitrate has two disadvantages compared to KNO3: it can form a tetrahydrate, which contains only 69% Ca(NO3)2, but there is also an anhydrous form, too
      and Calciumsulfate is poorly soluble. It may form incrustations in the flask, which impairs the reaction of "inner layers" with the sulphuric acid.
