Lots of great artists don't get their due till they die. I only found out about these guys after Tim died and I'm absolutely astounded at how good they were. From what I've seen and read they had a seriously dedicated fanbase, too. Which is nice to see. I know some bands that I don't think get their due, but that's just the industry!
@@trollfinger They did have a dedicated fanbase- some of the best times of my life were seeing this band! But truly, the musical breaks , the absolute musicianship of them all.... brilliant, they sounded as good live as they did on vinyl!

@@jonkabrioska Tim was a fan of XTC, and Andy Partridge went so far as to call Punk Music "Pop." Maybe Tim got some of that idea from Andy. To Andy, if it sells, it's pop music. Andy made at least 3 XTC songs that are somewhat in this vein: 1977 / 1978: "This is Pop" (vaguely about pop songs, not very in depth. "What do you call that _noise_ that you put on? "This is POP!") 1980: "Travels in Nihilon" (About Andy's massive disappointment in September 1978 about punk music just being another cash grab. "Fashion, their vampire drapes itself around your back/as you fall from style, it waits rebirth on its rack.") 1983: "Funk Pop a Roll" (A dark, disappointed, jaded view of the music industry. nice post never heard cardiacs do a cover version before it works pretty well big fan of the kinks aswell so two birds with one stone final push on jims face is brilliant !!!!
Sorry, I don't agree. If you knew the tragic background of the lyrics you would understand that the Cardiac's version doesn't come up to the original and I just perceive it as inadequate. So it's just a fun song in my opinion.
I think you will hope in vain. The original, as most originals are, is far superior. This is a pastiche. The song about about a sad old girl really and the singer doesnt show much empathy for her predicament but turns the pathos into comedy. Wouldn't want to listen to it a second time.
plonk220a Well, that is the point. Cardiacs make everything sound ridiculous and circus'ish. They make fun of somebody and yet they actually speak for society, not for themselves. That is why I think that this cover is better. P.S. And also, I LOVE this musical arrangement ^~^
The original is slow, plodding, with Bob Dylan-eqsue harmonica sensibilities. Personally, I find Cardiacs' version to be far superior, in terms of listenability, arrangement, and instrumentation.
I swear Bill Drake can speak in telepathically through his playing. It's like he's giving you the finger in a really awesome way. Well when you get the finger it's always awesome, or not. MEhhh. Get well soon Timmy!!!!
Cardiacs were fans of XTC, and supposedly, XTC also had some sort of influence on bands such as Blur and Franz Ferdinand. I never listened to Blur or Franz Ferdinand much, so I can't comment on them a lot.
Waiting for Sarah's sax to kick in and... nope. When I saw them, Christian was with them but Sarah wasn't so never got to catch the classic line-up. :(
The Cardiacs does way better then The Kinks or Dave Davies. Number 1 The Kinks be going real slow but these guys are taking to the limit. Also 1:45 is the best part
March 2021 now and I’m still gutted about Tim. The man is going to remain one of my heroes forever. Absolutely untouchable
Take care phil. It was a shame what happened to the genius. Still listening though.
I have been also listening to his disciples: Knifeworld, Oceansize.
Tim you deserved so much more. brilliant totally brilliant
I totally agree with you on that one my friend
The band are pure genuine genius
AGREED!

The world's best pop band of all time.
The world's best band of all time (okay, next to The Beatles, Genesis and Frank Zappa).
Most definitely
« pop » is a little dismeaning or at least confusion regarding defining the band.
@@thomasdupont7186 i think Tim called his genre pop. Maybe he was ironic i don't know

Masterful. RIP both Tims
This is chaotic on every front. Love it!
It immediately reminded me of Mike Patton
The best band of all time doing the best cover of all time.

I'm in love with Sarah Smith.
Me too.
She was very sexy. I'll leave it at that.
She loverly ain't she.
The only band in the world that could improve on The Kinks. And put this song where it belongs. I hope Ray has seen this.
Saw them at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth in 1978 and they seemed to sum up the dystopian romance of the time. Total joy!
RIP Tim Smith, you glorious musical maniac
You were correct. I do like this. Spectacular!
Is it me or do Tim’s chords at the end sound like an homage to “Alternative Ulster” by Stiff Little Fingers?.
God bless you, Tim. ✌🏻❤️🇬🇧
Only discovered this recently and absolutely love it! Always playing it when I get a chance!
Awesome. R,I,P, Tim. Genius.
I will always thank the day that I first laid ears on these guys.
Greatest band ever

This is a Kink’s song by Dave Davies.
No shit Sherlock
I love the 'Tattoo' reference (the who). Great version, Mister Smith and chums.
I heard the cardiacs version before I heard the kinks version so I’ve always thought of the kinks version as a cover of a cardiacs song
I hope I am not the only one who finds this version superior to the original.
Sorry, I don't agree. If you knew the tragic background of the lyrics you would understand that the Cardiac's version doesn't come up to the original and I just perceive it as inadequate. So it's just a fun song in my opinion.
Oh, it's a great cover but can't outshine the original.

Fantastic - haven't heard this since about '88!
Great video, great quality!
It was by Dave Davies, brother of Ray. It's the only cover version ever by Cardiacs!
Wonderful, thank you gehennathehorse. I bought the 12" of this at the time, but have never seen the video before.
I am in lust with Sarah in this video! She's fantastic! :)
God bless you, gehennathehorse. This is magnificent.

whoever found this and uploaded it rules. I've scoured the internet and back again but i can't even find an mp3 for it, let alone a full on video.
fucking shit this is amazing
This strangely reminds me of Crash Bandicoot...
That main motif is reminiscent of the beginning of the Crash Bandicoot 1 theme
And it also has the dominant bass and brass combo
More than twice as many views as the original. By far the best.
Awesome!
best music ever
Orgasme musical.....Quel bonheur !!!
Is there anywhere I can watch all their music videos in high quality???
1:58 comedic genius...fun solo too....

Ahhhhh man I think I've been overexposed cos Cardiacs songs sound normal to me now.
EDIT: Oh it's a Kinks song...
One doctor I want nothing to do with medically. But the tunes rock.
Why is this not on their bandcamp? Licencing issues?
Did they play in '87? I know they played the year before cos that's when they recorded Rude Bootleg.

This Kinks tune fits them.
I wonder what year this was released
16 years ago? Where is this video from?
It was probably filmed in 1988 or 1989 in England, the group's home country.
It's a very good cover of the Dave Davies song.
