I am here JUST because of how specific this title is.
Also I can't wait for this years SniperRifleCon
How many concepts and understanding of games had I not been able to put into words that made it into this single hour... It was really something looking in depth at halo 3 for all those years and knowing it was damn genius, but to see into the process later has been a joy.
343i's design by committee has dammed the franchise to over a decade of weak entries, so that's unfortunate. Eventually things will get spectacular again.
great talk.
Usually the problem with sniper rifles isn't that they are overpowered compared to other weapons; the problem is that too many people focus on getting good with it, and that it's super frustrating getting killed by those continuously.
Brilliant talk!

It's just someone with a well developed quadratic sense. You get it by staring at parabolas.
fantastic talk
The dry talks aren't usually interesting and entertaining, but this one really was.
Title is wrong. This talk is about sniper rifle, not plasma rifle.
This guy spent an hour talking about sniper rifles. Wish I could do that too someday.
How did Jaime get the release of Halo 2 wrong?? it dropped in 2004 not 2005.
37:10 I never thought about that
This man is making me buy every book he quotes lmao
Based talk.
I really want to know what that last section was lol. If anyone knows please share
3:55 The slides are more to help him remember lol
god damn i wish theyd apply it to assualt riffle and sped it up so its actually usable
23:40
cool
too bad people at Bungie dont apply this to Destiny 2. that game is crazy
12:50 But were they looking for more energy, giving without think due to overwhelm or simply a matter of taste? A fit person or one who dislikes cake wouldnt have picked
No Jackal beam rifle or legendary difficulty tuning. Lies i say!
The programmer in me loved this video.
The misophonia in me absolutely HATED this video. My god, he spends 50% of this time making crazy loud mouth noises.
what is wrong with the title ?
It's amazing?
@@informativt it's too specific i think
haven't really watched the video but i am guessing it's about game desing / game balancing
Ikr? It's not long enough.
@@INeatFreak Correct, it's exactly what it says on the tin. It is used as an example for how to balance in general. Would love to hear how the process is for a sniper rifle in destiny.
I was a huge fan of Halo 2. Put countless hours into it. I always held that the changes Halo 3 made to the game were mostly bad, but still played a lot of Halo 3.
This entire talk was actually pathetic. I watched the whole thing, only to have the guy behind it all say "I'm not good at the game. The only reason we changed the sniper rifle was because it made the other weapons feel weak. We knew it was ruining the flow of the sniper rifle when we did it, but decided to do it anyways instead of balancing the other weapons."
His reason for changing the sniper's speed was literally "I had a feeling." He gave up on balancing the rest of the weapons because he had a feeling it wasn't good. That's actually one of the worst things he could have possibly said.
The developers accidentally caught lightning in a bottle, just like Super Smash Brothers: Melee, and then they tried to justify what made it so good after the fact. The problem is they have no idea what made their games good, because they're not even good at their own games, and every change they think they should make to a good game ends up hurting it.
This talk did answer the question that I've had since the release of Halo 3, which is "What the F*** were these guys thinking making the game worse like this?" Unfortunately, the answer was not one that I ever wanted to hear.
I too enjoyed Halo 2 more than 3 until a few 1v1s broke the illusion and gave me the realization that the only good weapons in Halo 2 are the BR, sniper, sword, and maybe the rocket launcher. You can pull the rest of the weapons out of the game because of how weak they are. The sniper in Halo 2 was a joke. The gun was fun to shoot but no fun to be shot at with. The recovery time from the last fire is so miniscule that, provided the user's aim isn't terrible, the person on the other end of the barrel is basically done for. The extra .2 seconds afforded in Halo 3 actually gives the table some room to turn instead of being deterministic like Halo 2. Granted, this will only resonate if you're actually playing Halo for fun and not just to win a game.
Halo 2 is a piece of garbage compared to Halo 3 or Halo CE and ANY Bungie employee would agree. Halo 2 is so unbalanced its barely even fun to play.
halo 2 is still the best
18:00 Me: ULTRA TRIGGERED!!!!!!
Have an idea how complex it can get??!!!! How much you can read about someone's tendencies??? Just watch Kaiji and there are scientific tests on this. And gamble is the purest form of decision making, in real like you're always dealing with chance! I might say the this uncertainty with what impedes some distopian prison of being stuck in a bad result.
Bad audio quality, terribly specific title. Why should I give a toot about that?
There's a reason why Halo is know for reinventing the FPS. Weapon balance played a pretty big part in that.
@@G4M5T3R Reinvent? It was an early console shooter, that's all. Before that shooters on consoles were more of a joke, but Halo kind of worked. I guess now that every second game is a FPS there are probably more console shooters as well, but how is tuning one property of one gun in one particular HALO game relevant?
If you actually watched it for a bit, you'd find that he gives a broad and useful overview of playtesting strategies and player psychology. The title is a tongue-in-cheek example that doesn't show up until the very end.
Yer attention span is absolutely shit
@@wonderguardstalker What's shit is the audio quality, otherwise I would have watched it.
