Those old buildings have massive style. I don't know a thing about heritage listing up there, but that's what's needed to protect the old structures. They carry the hopes and dreams of their builders.
I was born in Mansfield and it was once a thriving market town, I moved away many years ago. Unfortunately out of town shopping centres and the internet have killed places like this, it will never come back.
I've noticed Mansfield is changing rapidly, not the same when I was a child, and the rosemary centre was the biggest shock having been emptied 7 months tomorrow, and also it started changing when Burton and Topman clothes stores shut 4 years ago at Christmas, not been the same without them
@@mitchellhulston6706 Becoming a shit hole like lenton! Even a African shop there now. Full of migrants who hate the locals! Council has destroyed it.
On the whole i didn't think Mansfield looked too bad. Certainly easy to make improvements. Didnt see any homeless, beggars or spice heads and looked quite clean. Good choice of shops, nice buildings and plenty of pubs. I think last time I went there was two wetherspoons next door to each other.
My dad didn't realise how bad Sheffield was from my videos, until he saw it last Friday. Some of the paving was moving under my feet, it all needs replacing and the old shop fronts painted up.
Ayup Tim, great vlog mate, I think our generation will become the last to know about vibrant market towns as they used to be!! It seems that all the good stuff comes to an abrupt end while all the crap goes on forever... Mansfield has certainly taken a dive like all the other surrounding towns...no progress, just decline... Such a shame Tim... Thanks for the tour mate...👍
Hi Sam hope you are OK. There seemed to be a reasonable number of people, If I had gone in Worksop the same time it would be totally deserted. Too much focus on the surrounding boring shopping centre and not on the beautiful heart to it. Best wishes Tim
Thank you for the tour. I have fond memories growing up in Mansfield and especially the Town Mill on Sunday/Wednesday rock nights ! Its a shame to see it in this state now - The water wheel as I remember was inside the pub next to a spiral staircase between the floors.
My first job at 15 was in the co op then at 18 went to work on my childhood dream trains at Shirebrook West, Still live in Mansfield 69 yrs later thanks for showing. Ps the council are moving into the art deco co op building.
My Grandmother and Father were from Mansfield, went there as a child and once briefly for a few hours about 10 years ago. Would like to visit for longer one day.
Brilliant video again Tim. Mansfield had no passenger train service 1965-95. That line was just used by coal trains servicing the various pits. The Rosemary Centre was once Cashers Textiles, my mother worked there as a weaver in the 1960s. In the 1980s it was developed into a shopping complex, Argos and several other big name stores were based there. It's been derelict for 10 years and rumours of a Lidl opening there are rife. The Taco Bells site was where the old bus station once was. The decorative metal clad multistorey is a car park, Tesco used to be located there underneath where B&M Bargains are now. The derelict building opposite was once a pub called Stockwells, a very lively venue up until the 2000s. Four Seasons opened in 1977, many Victorian buildings were demolished to develop it. Saint Peters Church actually had the graves excavated in 1960s when the ring road was built and went straight through the churchyard. There were far more shops, market stalls, pubs and clubs up until the 2000s. The population of Mansfield now stands at 108,000, it was only 80,000 in the 2000s. Most of this via immigration. Apparently the local MP has secured 72 million pounds investment over 7 years.
Thanks Chris. Only ever been to see a Gt aunt there in the countryside and Wednesday at Mansfield town in a friendly. My dad says he remembers Tudor buildings as per Chesterfield, but I saw none. I watched an old video of Mansfield it looked so quaint. Best Tim

Very interesting video . My one and only visit to Mansfield was about forty years ago -- so it is not surprising that I don't recognize a thing . How does it compare with Lincoln, Chesterfield and other places of similar size in the area ? I am doing videos of various districts around Hong Kong ( together with a few other places around the world ) and can't help feeling England has lost some vibrancy. Good health and many thanks .
Chesterfield has been decimated but I prefer to Mansfield. Lincoln has the really old bit packed full of tourists and the more modern shopping centre that is vibrant.
Mansfield used to be heaving on a fri and sat night...... town had lots of shoppers any day of the week.....great market, i moved away 19 yrs ago and its so depressing when i go home
I do believe there was a branch line that ran adjacent to Radcliffe Gate, where there was another station up until the 1960s. Nottingham had two stations, the Northern Line ran out of Victoria (shopping centre now), whilst the Midland station is still there.
Its a hole for sure... Until you go to sutton, then it makes mansfield look lovely ❤ They are making an effort to slowly modernise mansfield tbf.... Which you seem to dislike
Its cheaper and better to renovate and make good what already exists. When they build decent modern building I am all for it, but I have not seen a modern build after the 1940s that isn't Orwellian.
I live in Mansfield, have done my whole life.. It isn't all bad, but everyone has their opinions! It has its bad bit, and its good bits, everywhere does. It can be a bit.. Depressing, sometimes, but the Town Centre makes it nice and lively, when it's busy.

It was a hard one for me as I have never been in the town centre and had no clue about the pubs. Like every town they are being gentrified and all the activity removed. As for Wednesday its no longer the club I loved.

Absolutely Susan but what has been knocked down to build the 1960s dross and later?
Being listed doesn't save them if no use can be found. 😢
