Oldham's looking rougher than ever, shame really as the town does have a lot of good people there.
The place has changed quite a bit since I last visited, which was about 28 years ago. I used to live in Oldham when I was a kid we lived just down the road from the Greenacres Inn with the cemetery facing. Mum used to take us kids shopping with her to the town center, it was our day out and if we behaved we were always treated to a new Dinky or Corgi toy car from the little toy shop we new and loved so well. I recognized one of the streets you walked down, my old man used to work for a Taxi firm by the name of Eagle Jem Taxis, their office was on the right hand corner as you were walking down. We also used to go into Woolworths when we were there on a Saturday, which was just across the road and a little farther up and sadly now long gone as are many places including Gloddick Baths which we used to go to a lot as kids. We moved away from Oldham when I was around 11 years old, but I have many memories including playing at a place called the Manor flats which, then, was a wide expanse of open fields. There used to be an old Victorian tip there back in the day, and it became a favorite place to go dig up old bottles and such I collected quite the number over a period of time. I spent many hours down there with my little brother it was great fun and we'd always hurry home to clean everything up with a big bucket of hot soapy water. I'm now 58 years old, and those days seem so very long ago but, the memories are still as fresh as ever. Keep up the great work buddy now I've found you I'll check in from time to time, have a great Christmas Y'all
Oldham was a great place back in the 1980s. A great social scene, pubs, clubs, restaurants etc. A very much working class town, proud too! The Tories got into power in 1979, and that started te decline. Working men and women made redundant and then onto the dole queues for literally years. Going through into the 90s and the Labour council allowed the rot to continue. What you see today is a sad reflection on the town. Glad I'm old enough to remember nights out in Oldham in the 80s.
I was an alcoholic for years drinking three litre bottles of vodka a day ! I eventually collapsed at home and was unconscious for 11 days before the police found me ! I suffered kidney failure and had hypothermia ! After several weeks of dialysis my kidneys began working again ! I could go months without a drink at times but the biggest mistake I made was thinking that ...if everything goes wrong the alcohol is still there for me, at age 68 I'm still here but the alcohol left me life 20 years ago !

Just remembered something, I remember my old man picking up Tommy Cooper from a venue somewhere in Oldham town center, which would have been in the very late 70s one night in his Taxi. They were chatting as they went just kinda passing the time and just before Tommy got out of the car he leaned over and stuffed something into my dads top pocket saying "here you go lad have a drink on me later and with that he was gone. My dad clocked off for the night a few hours later and called in at the Greenacres Inn for a couple as he usually did before returning home and remembered the "tip, in his pocket, he reached in and pulled out, a Tea Bag 😂True story
That story reminds me of a story my uncle told me, he had a newspaper and comic stand outside The Adelphi in the 1950s 60s and 70s, he said Tommy Coop[er came out the hotel bought a newspaper, and when he checked the money, it was a foreign coin, he was there for three days, and he bought a newspaper everytime he came out, my uncle gave it back to him in his change the next time, and he came back and done the same thing again the next day. lol
