How much does make in a year?
In this video, we examine the average Industrial Engineer salary in 2019. We gathered data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to determine the average salary of Industrial Engineers. We also look at the historical salaries of Industrial Engineers and the top 5 best metro areas by salary for Industrial Engineers.
These income statistics are from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program. These salaries do not include bonuses or benefits. In our opinion, these are the most accurate salary numbers (better than indeed, glassdoor, and payscale).
Industrial engineers find ways to eliminate wastefulness in production processes. They devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service.
Industrial engineers typically do the following:
• Review production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows, and other information to understand methods that are applied and activities that take place in manufacturing and services
• Figure out how to manufacture parts or products, or deliver services, with maximum efficiency
• Develop management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient
• Enact quality control procedures to resolve production problems or minimize costs
• Design control systems to coordinate activities and production planning in order to ensure that products meet quality standards
• Confer with clients about product specifications, vendors about purchases, management personnel about manufacturing capabilities, and staff about the status of projects
Industrial engineers apply their skills to many different situations, from manufacturing to healthcare systems to business administration. For example, they design systems for
• moving heavy parts within manufacturing plants
• delivering goods from a company to customers, including finding the most profitable places to locate manufacturing or processing plants
• evaluating job performance
• paying workers.
Some industrial engineers, called manufacturing engineers, focus entirely on the automated aspects of manufacturing processes. They design manufacturing systems to optimize the use of computer networks, robots, and materials.
Industrial engineers focus on how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors, such as time, number of workers needed, available technology, actions workers need to take, achieving the end product with no errors, workers’ safety, environmental concerns, and cost.
The versatility of industrial engineers allows them to engage in activities that are useful to a variety of businesses, governments, and nonprofits. For example, industrial engineers engage in supply chain management to help businesses minimize inventory costs, conduct quality assurance activities to help businesses keep their customer bases satisfied, and work in the growing field of project management as industries across the economy seek to control costs and maximize efficiencies.

Thank you!! Just went back to school for industrial engineering and i live in Texas! Thank you for the information it's greatly appreciated!!
Good luck in your new career!
What school?

The most I have ever made was being a control engineer with 6 contractors under me where I received $25 a hour per contractor and my base of $55 a hour and this rate went up on overtime by Multipliers of 1.3 @ over 40 hours and 1.7 @ 58 hours and up.. which my average week of 70 hrs which paid me $21,197 a week before taxes and insurances. I was only able to make a top gross earnings off $292,000.00 for the year because of slowdowns in between projects that only I was working. The other contractors under my supervision made $30.00 hr plus multiplier of 1.5 and 2.0. Plus they receive bonuses for early project dates equaling $1500-$4000 three or four times a year.
Thanks for the review. The information provided was really helpful. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Industrial Engineering and I appreciate your efforts.
thanks for the video. But in what specialization of industrial engineering are jobs available? Is it in Supply chain? Data science or others?
@careerwatch, nice informative video. I'm having a small query. There are many things that come under IE. which specialization is good under IE.
Thanks for the review. It was really helpful. I'm interested in studying industrial engineering in the U.S for masters. I'll appreciate if you can help with steps to take to achieve my goal.
Can you do a video of what should we expect when we will take IE? I am going to take IE as my course and I am too nervous. I don't know what topic should I start (reading)
Please can you make the video, that tells, which are the relevant skills for an industrial engineering and management
Great information!!!
Thank you so much for the video! I am an international student studying Industrial Engineering in the US. I really like IE, but I am afraid I cannot get a job after graduation. Is it challenging to get an industrial engineering job as a visa holder with OPT? I wish to be sponsored for H1B Visa eventually. However, it seems quite challenging for international students. In this case, would it be a good idea to change my major to CS for a better chance to get employed?
Very informative video. Keep up the good work!
I'm a student in BEng Tech industrial engineering, thank you for sharing with such information 🙏🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
would you please say which softwares we should learn as a industrial engineer?? and what should we do as a industrial engineer to have more income and more success in our academic life??
Would you recommend industrial engineering over supply chain management? These two fields seem very similar. I am currently a freshman in college and I am not sure if the heavier course load in IE will be worth it in opposed to SCM because they both seem to cross paths
Both are great fields. You are right, they are fairly similar. Industrial Engineering is more technical and supply chain management is more functional.
It depends on your personality. Would you rather focus on a business/functional path over a technical path. Do you see yourself as a future manager?
I would choose based off your interests and what you are better at than over just salary.
I'm a student in La trobe and currently studying in industrial engineering, thank you for sharing with such informative information 🙏🙏
Glad to help! Love that university.
Sir I have a question, I am an Argentinian Industrial Engineer (one of the best universities). If I do the adaptations and certifications will I be able to earn the same as local american engineers? Thank you
Thank you for this valuable information.
Glad it was helpful!

Im close to becoming an Industrial engineer in Honduras and im worried about where to do my internship and if and where im going to get a job in the department of El Paraiso Honduras got any tips or advice you can give me ???

I have admits from ASU and university at sunny buffalo for ms in industrial engineering....my intention is to land on good paying job....which university should I prefer to pursue my masters?
Sir, do you think after covid crisis the scenario has been changed in mechanical-industrial companies ?
Is it more profitable to study in IT filed like data science or Industrial engineering is also good ?
What do you think ?
Many of the mechanical engineering jobs are around the Detroit area, supporting the auto industry. If people are making less money, there will be less money to go towards new autos, which could affect employment. Data science is a great field with lots of job prospects. I usually tell people to do what they are interested in. You can make good money in either field.
I have completed my UG in mechanical and currently acquired 3 years of work experience in Caterpillar.Inc as a Technical Sales engineer/ Product Specialist. Holds Projects. Out of which, 3 got published. Paper 1 - Plant layout in spinning industry. Paper 2- Business Proliferation of Mining machinery in India. Paper 3 -Systematic approach of Temp and Exhaust Inventory of Mining machinery. Also accomplished 5 International business courses from edx, coursera. Currently I've decided to complete masters in Industrial engineering. How do you think my career would be?
which is better industrial er or chemical engineer? In all aspect
I plan to double major in industrial and mechanical engineering, since I like both of them and I plan to have a career as a manufacturing engineer. I want to do factory design, production layout, and management. Is this good?
Why double? Why not mechanical and then do industrial engineering masters? I think it’s redundant to have both as bachelors degree
I wonder why you didn’t look at a school that offers the manufacturing engineering major
Thanks sir, the data is very helpful..... Actually I applied to university of Houston for my MS in IE !
Can you please help me with the starting approx salary after completing MS in IE ?
Wish I could help. There aren't good stats on starting salaries. Oil and Gas industry will offer higher wages than say education. Really depends on industry. Good luck!
How is masters in industrial engineering course in northeastern University Boston?
Hi this was a very informative video. Thanks for making this. I'll be joining MS Industrial Engineering this fall at University of Florida.
I have two more questions, and it'll be really great if you could answer these.
1) Why does pure MS OR pay so much more than MS IE?
2) How do you rate University of Florida for IE?
Thanks in advance.
how is Masters in IE at USF?? will be helpful if there's a way to contact you

Sor i am an industrial engineer in oir country Philippines and i migrated here in United States because of my parents since 2011. From then on i have never use my profession here in United States. Can you please help me how to get started.
If you were living in the Philippines does it good to be an IE? Or can u suggest some fields? Just needing an opinion from yours 😀
For remote jobs, I would suggest software development, recruitment, and data scientist.
But it really depends on what you are good at and interested in.
Also, definitely look into fiverr. Some people are making quite a bit of money on that platform.
@@CareerWatch Thank you so much man.
$57450 in 1999 is worth $88414 in 2018. So, the industrial engineering salary has been essentially flat for the past 20 years
Not necessarily true. I mean put it this way, would you rather be earning $57,450 annually or $88,424 annually? The fact of the matter is that the market value for industrial engineering is constantly growing unlike other jobs in the US that have not had a true increase in salary. The statistic you mention about how a dollar today is different in today's economy is correct, but to say that it has been flat line is just not true. Plus, industrial engineers can make themselves more valuable over time and earn much more money.
@@MarcusRangel704 your not paying attention. The value of a dollar has deflated in the period between 1999 and 2018. So, $57000 in 1999 dollars is the same as $88000 in 2018. So the increase the video alleges is entirely explained by inflation. This is basic Finance...time value of money (present and future value of money.)
Median income in 1999 was $44k, so the $57k salary was x1.29 of median income. Median income now is $63k, so the $88k salary is 1.39. So in relative terms the field’s median income increased by 8%.
Claiming the increase over 20 years was markedly improved by comparing inconsistent units is irresponsible. I have reconciled that to show the real change is relatively flat.
And, we are talking median salary. So you are arguing that some engineers will make more than the median. That is obvious in the definition of median...”denoting or relating to a value or quantity lying at the midpoint of a frequency distribution of observed values or quantities, such that there is an equal probability of falling above or below it.”
I am dismayed that an obvious observation is lost on you if you are representative of the field in question.
@@JustBCWi I appreciate the reply. I understand where you are coming from. Everything you said is facts and I am not denying that. When I initially read your original comment my understanding of it at first hand was this. Because Industrial Engineering has been “flat lined” in salary, then it’s not worth pursuing the career. Which is why I mentioned the hug gap of potential growth in title along with salary that most IE people have in the industry.
I misunderstood what you initially meant.
I think everyone would agree with you. We can love our jobs a little more if it paid a little more. 👍🏽
I wish the pay increase could have been weighted with cost of living. The pay above national average means nothing if it doesn’t even cancel the increase in cost of living.
Hi, I am industrial engineer not employed for long time, please help, in my country there is no knowledge about this field.
I’m an IE in the Detroit Metro Area, tons of people needed around here, not a terrible area as long as you live north of the city.

Your education is probably fine. Entry level industrial engineer positions don’t typically require a license yet and your university is accredited.
You would need a work visa, which is a different challenge, if you aren’t a US citizen.

@@CareerWatch I figure out I need a citizenship to apply engineering jobs from government department
What would you prefer and more safer for future?
Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
Both are great fields and regionally dependent. Almost 600 open jobs for mechanical engineers in Detroit right now.
Each has around 300,000 jobs. Only Civil Engineering has more total jobs.
Industrial Engineering is projected to add 23,800 jobs over the next 10 years. Mechanical is projected to add 12,800.
So many experts believe industrial has a better future.
But also consider which you have more interest in.
CareerWatch Do experts believe industrial has the best future out of all engineering?
Is it a good field for women?
Can you be a well paid industrial engineer in a remote area, is it possible?
Its probably possible, but not easy to do.
Why do i watch your video just as I'm applying to Universities for MS in IE xD
Hii..did u applied ?
what about civil engineering?? I mean job opportunities in USA comparing to the Industrial Engineering.
And what would you prefer?civil engineering, industrial engineering or chemical engineering. I am going to take admission for undergraduate.
They are both growing faster than the average engineering field. For the next 10 years:
Civil Engineering: 6% growth (+20,500 jobs)
Industrial Engineering: 8% growth (+23,800 jobs)

For a start the value you gave at the start of the video comparing salary in 1999 and now, LITTERALLY is the same value after adjusting for inflation. There isn't any insane increase demand for us.
Hoping wage growth picks up more in the future! The price of housing, education, and health care are getting way out of hand.
@@CareerWatch Can't quite say on health care, but my main goal, is to work from home as an IEng, and live in a cheap rural town. But my town is going through a migration boom, and housing is going through the roof (no pun intended)
My biggest worry will be inflation. Luckily, I don't have enough savings to be significantly affected by it since I haven't started my career yet.
Industrial engineering is good for girls???
The salary will obviously rise because of inflation. If you adjust the salary for Inflation the salary is not actually increasing... Simple economics
