Oregon governor declares state of emergency amid fire danger as resources strained

- Firefighters in Oregon are doing what they can to keep up with wildfires, but resources are strained and conditions are predicted to get worse.
Gov. Tina Kotek on Friday evening declared a state of emergency because of the imminent risk of wildfire.
Right now, nine fires are burning across Oregon.
Not only are resources strained in Oregon, but nationally fires and fire danger in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah are occupying much of the mutual aid resources that Oregon may have otherwise been able to count on in case of quick spread.

Earlier today I saw helicopters hauling buckets of water wast to east from the Dayton Or. area. I assume they were hauling water from the Yamhill river to a fire somewhere near here. The grass seed farmers all have had their fields swathed for several days now but unusually have not combined for the seed yet. Never seen that in the 25 years we have lived here. Normally the grass seed fields are combined right after being swathed. My nephew came up from Albany & said you could see smoke in his area as he drove up.
So you think they didn’t harvest on purpose?
@@rudyb1652 No, I think they maybe waiting for storage space for the seed. According to my neighbor last years seed crop has not all been sold yet & the $$ for this years crop has plummeted from the last few years. Most farmers don`t have a lot of seed storage although they do have barns to store the grass seed straw once combined for seed & then baled into 1,100 # big bales. I`m also thinking they maybe cautious with field fires as well. We have had several trucks & a combine catch fire last year out in the field across from our farm. Scary when that combine caught fire!
Two years ago we had a major thunderstorm (with Hail) in the middle of the summer. About 15 minutes later a helicopter arrived with a bucket of water, and we realized that three or four of the lightning strikes had lit up the hill above our house (about 100 yard away from our home). The two things that kept it from being a tragedy were the advantage of all that hail. And best of all, the immediate response from the forestry services, paying attention to the lightning, and sending resources. I have slept easier ever since that event. About 40 helicopter buckets of water from the Klamath River, and three crews wielding chainsaws, and they kept it down to 4 or 5 acres.
Pretty solid of him to squeeze in an interview. Go Oregon Fire Department!
That's just 😢
Maybe not start controlled prescribed fires in mid June..?
Why utilize forestry management. It only reduces wild fires and creates jobs and exports for the state via timber. But salamanders… Arson should be a minimum of a $10,000,000 fine and at least 50 years in prison.

We are late-August dry and temps so much higher than our average. We had a day of cooler temps and are back into the 90s again. Triole digits a few days ago. We used to get 5 90°+ days each summer. We've had at least 15 90° days already. I remember dry spells in the past. We'd have heat waves, too but for maybe 3 days.
You cannot live in Oregon and not see the effects of climate change. When marina docks are 100' from the water's edge at one of NW Oregon's boating paradises you can't help but see what's happening. Plus that area was the part of Oregon that that was obliterated by fires in 2020. That wall of orange smoke moving towards us. Couldn't sed the house across the street. Apocalyptic. Worst air quality in the world for 2 weeks straight. A 5 hour drive to get to clean air. The smell was horrendous and it lingered for days after. Everything saturated with the stench. It sure didn't smell like burning pine trees. Homes, businesses, factories and cars. Just imagine the chemicals released into that smoke. Had they only shut down the power grid until the high winds had passed all those people and their livestock and their homes would still be there. Downed power lines, dry conditions and high winds. Far easier to count buildings left standing than the hundreds gone. You could count them on one hand. When the smoke clleared and the little burger shop beside the highway was still intact in a sea of ash and twisted, melted metals it was such a sweet surprise. I was 10 the first time we had stopped there. 1967. Did so much camping up there as teens. My sister lost her RV that was parked at the marina. Small beans compared to the destruction. This was all just about 15 miles E of Salem. Way too close for comfort. Dry, burning pines in wind can spread a fire faster than a person can drive themselves out of it.
It was scary. Two old ladies and a dachshund on their own. There were fires popping up so close to neighborhoods. We had bags packed with essentials ready to go. My Jeep in case we had to sleep in it. Where was the issue. There was fire in every direction. It seemed like the lushest, greenest parts of Oregon were all on fire. Like half the state was in flames. I NEVER want to experience that orange wall coming at me again. Sorry about the essay.

@@LadyLithias Yes but at this time, it's not lightning related as we hadn't seen any thunderstorm for many weeks. Besides, didn't they rule that Larch Creek fire was due to human cause?
Around 90% of wildfires are human caused. Usually it's things like escaped campfires, vehicle exhaust manifolds, and discarded cigarettes. I was on a small fire in June that was caused by a guy grinding in his shop with the door open. People tend to think arson, but that's actually pretty uncommon.

How many of the fires are started by arson? Why don't they want to tell you?
I think in many cases they want to (a) deal with the fire and leave the causes to be determined later. If they say it's arson, but it's speculation, that's not reporting the news. We have a lot of lightning here in Oregon, and have been in significant drought conditions for years. It doesn't take much.

Although nearly 90% of wildfires are caused by human activity, very few of them are arson. Some of the most destructive fires have been arson, however. Like the Alemeda fire that wiped out two Oregon towns in 2020.

The management of Oregon and Washington and California needs to retire and get out of the way. Liberals cannot manage a country.
Yeah, I remember the republican representative I used to have here in OR, and he believed that the problem with forest fires is having forests. He just wanted to turn the trees into cash, and eliminate the problem.
Seems to me that your comment does a grave disservice to the human beings who dedicate their lives in a thousand different ways to make sure that their little sphere of influence is the best it can possibly be. Just because a person lives in those states doesn't make them automatically a "liberal" and the majority of Oregon that is actually burning is in counties run by conservatives. Also I think it might be important to note that these aren't countries. They are states.
The biggest problem is that (I'll generalize here).... country folks (conservative mostly) have specific concerns, and are often contribute to the economy significantly (Farmers, RAnchers), and they don't think that their needs are understood or given any voice. They feel ignored and attacked by laws put out by the city folks (liberals, mostly). For their part, they have concerns and needs that a country dweller can't understand either. The more the folks on both side try to understand one another, and suppress the radicals on both sides, the more real patriots can get on with trying to make this country "a more perfect union".
For the record, I was born in Seattle, grew up in Silicon Valley, and have lived a rural life for the last 25 years. I've been independent, republican and Democrat. I try to leave generalizations behind, and focus on what any one individual says or does. That is how I judge them. I might be more liberal than conservative, but I take each human being as a person with opinions. I don't think "that's an (R), must be an idiot." Actually, plenty of idiots on all sides of the idealogical aisle.
@@LadyLithias
It's not necessarily the people. So much of those states it is the people's will that they elect the same old, sad so-called leaders of the people. Everyone wants to concern themselves with issues that are above and beyond the limits of our borders.
And then they want to make all citizens of the world citizens of the USA. I'm on a rant. I've never been an independent. I've never been a republican. I've never been a Democrat.
