Lyricist: Martin Luther
Lyrics Date: 1529/1528
Translator: Frederick H. Hedge
Key: C
Theme: God: His Faithfulness; Comfort, Victory in Conflict
Composer: Martin Luther
Music Date: 1529/1528
Tune Name: EIN' FESTE BURG
Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.7.
Scripture: Psalm 46:1
The one hymn that most symbolizes the Protestant Reformation is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." In it, Martin Luther proclaims his confidence in God and rallies all Christians to war against evil. Basing his words on Psalm 46, he victoriously states "We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us." Those persecuted and martyred for their convictions during the Reformation sang these words.
Luther understood the power of evil: After he posted his ninety-five theses on the door of Wittenberg's Castle in 1517, he faced years of trials and persecution, he was excommunicated from the Roman church, and he continually faced threats against his life and his freedom. Other reformers had been persecuted and burned at the stake.
But he also knew "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in danger" (Psalm 46:1) and so he wrote "A Mighty Fortress is our God," proclaiming boldly that "the prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him . . . one little word shall fell him."
Since he wrote it in 1529, Luther's hymn has been translated into nearly every language. There are said to be over eighty English translations alone to this hymn, but the version most used in the United States is the translation by Frederic Henry Hedge in 1852.

Who is here 2020 singing for our King and Lord Jesus Christ
2021
2021 on Reformation Day.. ie October 31st.
2021
Oh yea
My God is a mighty fortress. We are a mighty fortress.
My father shot himself in the head several years ago. He lay dying for three days. Everyday when I'd go home just long enough to shower and change clothes, I'd sing this hymn to try to keep up my courage. I love this hymn so much. It's powerful.
🙏
I know that pain well, God is faithful
Patty, my father shot and killed himself in 1990. I never got " over it, but God sent me people to help me get " thru" it. I cried today as I was going through old pictures of Daddy to send to my nephew. May angels and memories comfort you. 💙🙏
Oh, How my heart goes out to you! May the Lord comfort you and give you peace!!
remember what St Paul says "For you have died and your life is hid with Christ in God"
I’m 14, and I really love this song so much!! I’m listening to this song while my private worship!! Thank you God!!
AMEN As you draw close to Him He draws close to you, such Love Our Father
I am 5 times your age but love this hymn even more than I did before!
My entire life, the Lord has stayed with me, in good times and in bad!
He has ALWAYS been my fortress and my strength!
I will tell you: God NEVER leaves us! If he feels remote or distant, then in some way we have left Him! I encourage you to persist in your faith, and endure to the end! You are entering into one of the hardest ages to keep your faith, when many of your friends may lose theirs. Be steadfast, have courage, and ALWAYS trust God!
May the Lord bless you and guide you. ☺
How precious this hymn is to me. A time in my life I was angry with God and turned to the evil temptations of this world. Later in my life I finally found God again, my faith and spirituality grew stronger in Him, but I could feel Satan trying to lead me into temptation again. How this led me into another great depression, I felt as if I were in this state of "limbo" either being with God or being sucked into Satan's realm. I felt that maybe God didn't want me back, but a couple days later I remember my dad playing this hymn for me and I remember it driving me to tears when reading the lyrics. Knowing that God is our fortress and protects us from Satan's power is the most reliving thing anybody could hear. To anybody that may read this I wish to tell you that God will never reject you and that he will ALWAYS protect us from Satan's wrath.
❤Amen
“The body they may kill
God’s truth abide the still
His kingdom is forever!”
Love that saying
The very first hymn I ever learned when I became a Christian! I praise God for the testimony of the Protestant reformers and Martin Luther in particular. His life inspired me to open the Bible for the first time. I gave my life to Jesus after reading a book called The Great Controversy that began with the story of men like Luther, used by God, to bring forgotten truths of the Bible to light. My life was forever changed by that book and by inspiring me to read and study the Bible for myself.
@@leerussell451 Happy Sabbath.
I'm so glad to have found this song! I first discovered it in our old hymnal - one we have discontinued- and read the lyrics. It's beautiful and the words ring true
A beautiful hymn....and a good book..the great controversy
Praises to God Suzi for the way He has worked in your life! I was just reading The Great Controversy p206 which tells how this hymn was written and sung to encourage the reformers on their way to Diet. Now we are blessed to have this faith building song! So grateful to God!
1 Corinthians 13:8-10 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Prophecy complete with the book of Revelation. Therefore Ellen G White was a false prophet.
Gal 2:21
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Gal 4:9
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
This song i remember singing it in trinity Lutheran school and when i used to watch Davey and Goliath on tv. It brings me back . I can thank my mom for my religious up bring now iam a Born again Christian ✝️. ❤️ It is still powerful
You're bringing back memories for me with "Davey and Goliath on tv." I watched that show growing up as a child back in the 1960's in NYC.
God bless each and every Christian believer in the whole world.
and every non-christian too right?

I'm from Russia. Excuse me for my English. Very beautiful and inspiring anthem!
Theodorus,
Your English was excellent! 👍
We sang this at my Father's funeral and I know he chose all the music before he died. This hymn is significant to me because as soon as we started to sing I was finally able to cry.
So sorry for your loss. May angels and memories comfort you. 💙🙏
In Dutch this song is called: "Een vaste burcht is onze God" but originaly it's German, then it's: "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott".
This song was written and composed by Martin Luther, probably as early as 1528, so it is nearly 500 years old.
A song to be sang when you're fighting and struggling in faith and in life in this world with all kinds of dangers with all kinds of trouble for getting confidence in God our Father.
Our God is as faithful now as He was 600 years ago. If He is for us, who can be against us?
A truly great and scripturally sound Hymn.
In Finnish it is called Jumala ompi linnamme.
Your math is off; it wasn't even 500 years ago yet.
@Chris: you're absolutely right, mistakes can happen.
500 years and still strong! Praise be to God and our Lord Jesus Christ his Son!
Indeed, no powers of darkness, nor anything that abides in the heavens, nor earth, nor beneath the earth shall ever separate us from the love of God and His loving protection. A mighty fortress He is indeed! Hallelujah!
Amen!
Martin Luther was God's gift to the church.
Thank you God for Martin Luther 🙏
praise the lord
This my anthem for 2021. Gives me so much peace during the somewhat uncertain times.
Laura Quin ...AMEN to that! AMEN, And AMEN!🌹
Sad many churches don't even sing many hymns, much less this one. All taken over by Hillsong and Bethel.
Martin; "Nailed it!"
+tpt100t Who wrote this song was Luther!
tpt100t That was perfect.
I grew up singing this song in church. The words are so powerul & the older I get the more I understand them. Especially powerful today in this world wide pandemic fear & confusion. God is growing my faith through this gospel in a song. Thanks to God & Martin Luther.
“A mighty fortress is our God” - what an encouragement!!!
Amen!
happy reformation day guys
"The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." -Psalm 46:7
Just curious why you say the God of Jacob from ps46 ??
Martin Luther is a very inspiring historical figure who reformed Christianity and wrote the wonderful lyrics of this hymn
God is our fortress, our high tower, our sword and shield.
I grew up listening to this before I became a Christian: The Theme Song to : Davey and Goliath :) xoxo It is one of my favorites now. Glory to God, I thank Him for shepherding me into His Fold.
“One mighty Word will fell him!” That Word is Jesus Christ!
This hymn is about courage and perseverance in the Christian life. Never deny the Lord, nor the way you worship him.
This hymn has been a strength, and a source of encouragement to the one who has been assaulted by the enemy of our souls.
Praise the Lord, the sweet Lamb of God, our Savior!!! Thank you from Brazil!!!
Amen!!!...and you are most welcome, from America!!! Are you happy with your new president, President Jair Bolsonaro? We are very glad here that he won. May God bless and keep your president, you and your loved ones, and all of Brazil. Thank you for your comment, Kerimah.
@@ChristisLord yes, we are very happy too. Thank you!!!
Such a beautiful song. I can't wait for your return my King and my God, Jesus.

Joelito7141 Keep learning the hymns and then sing them. You never know who is listening:)
Such a blessing to hear and sing these powerful Truths.
Glory be to God.
We are about to feel the wrath of Satan but who will hide under the banner of Prince Emmanuel will see the Salvation of the Lord.
The Lord brought this song to mind while I was driving ! I had to find it and here I am . Praise the Lord !!!!
This song is now a favourite of mine! Very fitting for this spiritual warfare that we are fighting in.
A very powerful and reassuring hymn of God's conquest over the antics and wiles of the enemy.....Glory to God forever
The Lutheran battle cry. Love it!
I'm a Greek Orthodox Christian. I've been fascinated with this melody since I was a little kid in the early 70s. It was the opening theme of "Davey and Goliath" a sunday morning kids program. It's a beautiful hymn.🙏🕊
Haha...I too watched that program as a child in the 60's in NYC.
I remember "Davey and Goliath" ! Also, I think the Greek Orthodox churches are breathtakingly beautiful ! I look forward to Greek Fest in knoxville, tn every October. The icons and mosaics in the church, the dancing 💃 and baklava, all make me want to be Greek ! OOMPAH ! Love, marybeth 😀💙🙏
Also Greek Orthodox but this is such an uplifting hymn
2021....No need for fear or to be afraid. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. You can have real, true peace inside.
Truly truly His Kingdom is FOREVER. Amen.
This my favorite hymn in the whole wide world. Has been since I was a kid. :)
Love the old hymns
This music calms my soul. I just want a life that pleases God above all others.
We will not fear, for God has caused us to triumph through him.
Listening in May 2020 during covid 19. "And though this world with devil filled should threaten to undo us. We will not fear for God hath will His Truth to triumph through us" Amen.
Thank you for sharing. I am profoundly moved to the point where my hair is raised off my skin and tears are starting. There must be a reason too: God is extending a welcome into His Kingdom. It is an invitation unlike any other; his grace, blessings, presence, and love are truly infinite knowing no boundaries.
AMEN!
Beautiful Hymn On This Sabbath Day!! Let's Keep It Holy!!
Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth By the blood of Jesus and the power of the Holy spirit
We will not fear for anything for God hath will . Your word is a lamp unto my feet
May God help us all in these dark times on earth, and let his word guide all people to the right path. Amen
there is not a more majestic hymn as "a mighty fortress is our God." you can listen to all the rock and roll type hymns of today, but there are not more God-honoring hymns like this one, Wesley, fanny Crosby, john newton, etc. to God be the glory
Thanks be to God for all those who uphold the truth!
Holy is thy name, Jesus our savior was with Luther, and is also with us.
My favorite doctrinal hymn of all time!!!! KICKS THE DEVILS IN FACE!!!!
And also shut Satan's mouth
AMEN
Amen and touche !
Psa 56:11 In God have I put my trust:I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

Wonderful and amazing hymns from a man who stand reformation of our religion. May God bless all believers in the whole world. Thank you for uploading..

This hymn has never lost its message. Look at the state of the world now and you will the relevance of those glorious thoughts penned by the blessed Martin Luther. Glory to God in the highest - A Mighty Fortress indeed .

Happy Reformation Month 2022!
Such a lovely melody, greetings from Turkey.
I love this old hymn because it’s so true and I sing the same song to worship the Lord ✝️ as my ancestors did!
A lovely soft version. Our church organist played it with much more emotional definition and the congregation sang as if they were preparing for battle.
Everyday is a battle
I love this hearty praise of our Lord God. When I'm feeling low - and also when grateful for Jesus's glory - I find myself humming A Mightly Fortress.
The words of this song touched me today. In the season I am in now God is mighty fortress.
Proud to be a Lutheran but a follower of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer
Luther had great taste in music and poetry! God bless!
Iove you jesus

Guilty of changing, removing, and causing confusion in scripture are a few of the things Martin Luther happens to be guilty of! How could this man be praised for the reformation? He has ruined the lives of saints!
+Earl Archibald Campbell of Argyll How does one ruin the life of someone that's dead? The memories of loved ones and followers are challenged, their devotion toward that saint may wane, but then hasn't that always been a function of historical review? Not to praise any reformist then or now, but scripture has always been open to interpretation. Luther had his views, as did dozens of other reformists at that time who disagreed with him and/or with the church in Rome.
Nonsense.
Reformed Theomomist Really? "Papist dog?" I'm surprised you didn't win him over with that loving rejoinder.
Well the end of the protest is coming to an end,if God wills Oct 31st,2017 will be the turning point in history where protestants sign a document of officially coming home back to the Catholic church; here there world will see a fulfilment of 2 Thess 2:3 The great christian apostasy just before Jesus returns, and with the world reaching a population of 7.5 billion people I have a gut feeling God won't allow it to pass 8 billion. The world is ripe for destruction the only thing it back is God's people need to get serious and start surrender fully to God.
2024, and it’s the song of the day! 🙌🏻 Beautiful!
Beautiful and inspiring hymn. One of my favourites.
one of the greatest hymns of all time
Thank you, Mr. Luther, for not only changing the world but making music to.

A Lovely Hymn.

Whenever I sing this hymn, the power n presence of The Living God affirms Himself in a new and fresh way! Hallelujah!
On the Edge of Eternity
The knights of old,
With armor, shields, swords, and bows,
Did yield to but one law told -
That life lived truthfully is one to behold.
Beholden indeed was the Creator to these -
Warriors of such who prayed on their knees,
Never shirking the responsibility to be,
Humble before - God Almighty.
They fought campaigns for decades on end,
On the edge of eternity,
With God as their friend.
And from this edge he did defend,
Welcoming those - on Him depend!
He calls to us, even now,
In each man’s heart,
He’s sown and plowed.
So take this time to think it through,
For Heaven’s grasp is now upon you.
a hymn!whenever i listen it i imagine how the reformed church of 16th century was like!
God's kingdom is forever. It won't fail. Abide in Him
One little word shall fail him indeed because we must win the battle
I love Jesus saved and washed in his blood
✝️
