- Fujifilm's Instax instant film cameras have proven incredibly popular. The latest model, the Instax Mini 99, has the most creative controls we've seen yet. Chris Niccolls took the camera and a pile of film out to shoot around the streets of Calgary and he has some thoughts on the shooting experience.

Well played!
He made a flip-book!
It can almost shoot at 3 frames per minute!
idk
😂😂😂😂😂
All these new mini and square instax cameras, while heaps of us are still waiting for a new wide camera
Seriously. Whats it been? 8 years now? Mini is by far the most popular so I get it but come on Fuji. Id love this in a Wide or even Square.
I recently bought a Link Wide printer... and I say YES to this!
Came here to say exactly the same! Why do Fuji hate photography enthusiasts so much!?
More margin and they sell more of mini? I love instax wide too, but can see why they aren't supporting it so much.
@@Ildskalli because it's not the market that gives them the most money
I love my Mini 90 and seeing all the comments deriding the photo quality is pretty funny. They're not wrong but they're also completely missing the point of shooting Instax in the first place. Ofc just getting the printer and printing out perfect digital photos yields better quality, but the fun is in working within the limitations of the format, really testing your skills as a photographer and your knowledge of the gear, only having a limited number of chances to get every thing right, and having that uncertainty of the exact result. And without having to do all the developing of a serious film camera lol
I have plenty of imperfect or just bad pictures that I didn't have the heart to retake because I wanted to save film, it's taken a good bit of trial and error to really understand how to get shots to click with the camera, and even now I still miss plenty. But it all makes nailing those perfect shots even more satisfying. If you want perfect pictures every time it's kinda self explanatory that it isn't the format for that
@@the_wiki9408
Yeah, the film stock just isn't great, it has nothing on the good ole' Polaroid.
@@the_wiki9408 That's fair. And imo it's mostly two things. Major one is cost ofc, they know they can get away with it so why significantly increase production cost for little gain. I'd think it's cool, but serious instant film shooters are a niche within a niche. Ultimately the vast majority are the people the normal Instax 12 is marketed for, those who are just casually enjoying the aesthetic and don't even care about camera controls let alone photo quality, and I doubt increasing the quality would significantly increase sales. Especially since in some places I feel like they're struggling to keep up with film demand as is. And second would be that aesthetic. At a certain point if the photos become too good I do think some of the charm would be lost and people would start questioning, why use an instax instead of a phone or proper camera. So much of the photos we see every day are so perfect now that I do think people are chasing that look of imperfection in their aesthetic and view it as part of the charm of the camera. Same reason there's been like a resurgence in the disposable film cameras look or digicams, most photos are too clinical now and the imperfection makes it almost feel more authentic.
It'd still be cool to see them make a "serious" instant film camera though, I wouldn't be opposed.
😊
Used an older Instax at a relaxed wedding a few weeks back. Handed it around, great for causal happy snaps, put everyone at ease and was a bit nostalgic for the older folks who remember original polaroids. Like the good old days when each table at the wedding had a disposable film camera. Great fun.
> Like the good old days when each table at the wedding had a disposable film camera.
@timfox5341 Hmmm I never seen such thing ('94 here) but seems like such a great idea! Too bad I already had my wedding tho
@@R2r_1337 Was great until you learnt that your drunk uncle took the camera into the toilet for some personal snaps... :/
Those good old day are in fact here already. I am a wedding photographer and at many weddings that I have photographed the couple puts a disposable camera at each table and gets the photos developed after the wedding. At other events, the couple also puts an instax camera in a central table and guest can come up and grab a photo too.
My son and his wife have an older Instax. Whenever we get together, we always take a few snaps. They have a picture board they put them on. It's always cool to look a the board and add new photos. Fun little camera.
lol, had a good laugh with the abrupt stop of the music when the black and white film ran out. great editing baby
Overall, this video portrayed a lot of creativity and fun they had while shooting the review and afterwards in post. Regarding the item they're handling here, I'd say "task successfully completed".
Nice call back to the podcast
Why does Fujifilm never release an updated version of the wide film camera? These upgrades on the wide camera would be awesome
This had to be such a fun day
Every instax day is a fun day ❤️
Absolutely loved seeing you have some fun reviewing this Chris!
Finally an instax with cool Fuji physical controls.....annnnnnd they're for filters.
For your...film camera.
Come on.
Use the dedicated dials for some actual control features. Exposure comp is a good choice glad they did that at least. When you come down to it this is a medium format film camera. Wish they would build one with some actual features for photographers, especially given how much the film costs...would be cool to shoot it with something with actually high quality optics and handling.
Yeah I thought they finally added aperture and shutter control, instead we get more pointless filters.
You want all that? Just buy instax printer and print files from your mirrorless or dslr. That's not hard, isn't it?
Go drop $800-$1k on a MINT camera if you want full manual controls. Thats not what the Instax line is about and given how massively successful it's been, there doesnt seem to be a want for a full manual Instax camera.
@@trym2121 then they would not be acquired on medium format film…
polaroid has one for 500$
The art is just oozing out of my screen, like a digimon.
My first time ever watching your posts. LOVED what you did with the black and white bit. You totally hooked me!
Genuinely excited about this one, I love the Instax line, and I'm going to get one of these!
Still really hoping they do something like this for the Instax Wide, THAT is the best format.
I just want to say that the quality of your videos is superb.
I have an earlier Instax Mini. It is fun to just play around with it. I would sort of like to have a larger format polaroid in some ways, but the fujifilm is also fun.
from Instax to GFX Fuji makes some pretty great stuff
Great review, fun camera. Love FujiFilm.
I'm feeling buzzed about the new Fuji Insects camera, with it surely time will fly by!
I have a bronica ETRS and fitted it with an instax mini back. the image quality is really stunning
We need an instax W I D E version.
Nice
I had a few instant cameras over the years, polaroid, instax, had fun with all of them, used them along side my film and later digital cameras.
Sometimes it's just fun and go take photos without all of the high tech stuff.
Im retired from Media and photography sold most of my gear, I might have to look into this camera when it comes out.
Just use lens cap hack. Harvest lens from the cheapo disposable camera like kodak or fujifilm and glue it to your lens cap. Many tutorial in UA-cam.
Bring tiny flash and instax printer and you have all of this camera feature.
@@trym2121Or he could just buy this and be happy without all the fussing about.
The thing with instax film is that that the environmental temperature you are shooting in seems to influence the colour tint you end up with. I have noticed when shooting in higher temperatures the colour cast is slightly different.
My niece is a fujifilm instax addict. Looks like a fun camera.
I definitely want one
Finally, a slightly more advanced analog Instax
After trying Instax years ago, I found the SP printers are really the best way to go. Take a photo with a camera or cell phone and print it on to Instax film. Photos are properly exposed and you can print the same photo multiple times for friends.
It's not a true analog film experience. No thanks.
@@michaelbell75Didn't draw the picture by hand... Meh, not a *real* artistic experience. Poseur. ;-)
Will have to look into SP printers. Sounds fun.
@@michaelbell75but it gives better results than "true aNaLoG people"
@@michaelbell75It's great to use at weddings though, if you're a wedding photographer. Use the lunch down-time to hammer out thirty or so and arrange them around the cake or guest book, makes a great introduction to those arriving just for the reception and really reassures the happy couple that you're getting the goods.
We had an earlier model and it is both a really good camera and a really bad camera. We used it for fun memories on family trips and in the end it really was the price of the film that was holding it back. I would say half price, maybe more, for the camera to be "worth it". But it truly is a fun and useful little camera.
I heard sepia tone Im sold
Would be a nice add-on feature to common digital cameras to differentiate from others.
.... and now for something completely different. Nice. :)
Oooh a new instax :)
It is such a fun system.
Yes it is a toy, but it is a FUN toy.
Ooo gonna buy this one
My hope from Fuji is for an ultrawide Instax, ideally with Instax Square. A 42mm lens would have a near-identical field of view to the classic Hasselblad SWC. I know that such a thing exists as an Instax back for Hasselblad cameras, but that misses the point--I don't have Hasselblad money. I have Instax money, and want my ultrawide squares.
Anyhow, this looks solid. The older advanced Instax was kind of long in the tooth, and this seems like it has a nicely increased set of controls. I know some folks might be skeptical of the lens, but I've gotten better results typically from that standard 60mm Instax than I have with the Mint TL70.
Nice camera, nice picture quality gives of proper old analogue image quality
Doesn't look anywhere near as sharp as my old polaroid camera.
@sharpvidtube not the point of it it gives nice early 1900s analogue quality
I want Fuji to make better square cameras. Instax square is a great format but the cameras they offer for it could be closer to traditional Polaroids and/or offer more creative freedom.
The best alternative I’ve seen is the NONS 660 but it’s 599 without a lens. It’s nice that it’s interchangeable and seems super professional but it would be nice if there was a middle ground between plastic fixed focus lens and professional medium format body with an EF lens mount and instax back.
Sounds like an ideal type of fun camera great for fun times and the ever mobile grandchildrren !!
Depends on what the price is when released in Australia, always way, way more than North America.
That jacket is cool
would love to see a wide version of the Mini EVO! so you can take the photo digitally and still print it after you take it.
Just buy the Wide printer.
How is the framing precision ? Because for me the worst default of the Instax Fuji camera is the viewfinder, with a lot of paralllax error, which leads to impossible precise framing, which is very frustrating ! Personaly I finally ended to get an Instax back for my old medium format fil camera to have more precise framing
it's in the video. He was talking about it just as I read your comment. I scrolled up and got the time code but in the time it took to roll the mouse wheel back to your comment, I decided I was going to interpret it as pretentious waffle.
sick! i REALLY want full manual control and a gfx mount on an instax. pretty please?
Thanks for the video. Could you compare it to the mini Evo please? Thank you
Cool that this type of camera is being made. Kind of bizarre. Those controls remind me of my old 110 cameras.
Coincidentally, Lomography just released a new 110 film camera and they sell the film.
@@peterkapunkt6783 Wow. You wouldn't think something like that would be profitable but cool that they're giving it a try. What's next? Disk cameras?! lol.
Very good pics this time Chris 😊
'just sayin' as I made fun of your hockey pics the other day.
As always, a very pleasant-to-watch review.
Keep up the good work guys 😊
The color filters look so vintage and Polaroid-y. Sadly the pricepoint is not for me at the moment but Ill definitely update my Instax mini 90 in a few years. Ill wait again till I can find a great second hand price (got my mini 90 for 50 euros and works perfect lol)
Great little camera! ❤
4:17 Ha!
I'm curious to see if a square version could dethrone the SQ6. So far I haven't seen an instant camera that's more reliable or fun to use for the price.
great idea..But what I/we want is this concept but using our own Fujifilm lens to change whatever we want!! Why this has not happened?
That's sort of neat. I feel like this is the one they should have let Leica badge engineer.
I am a huge instant film fan and user and been waiting for this one! It's a pretty genius design IMO. I do not like digital instant cameras at all, it's not true analog and defeats the purpose of shooting film IMO. Having these different "simulations" on an analog instant film camera is super cool. Mini is my least favorite Instax format though. Really hoping for a Square version and for the love of God, can we please get another Wide camera?! These are going to sell a ton.
We NEED a new wide camera please
Do you guys think Fujifilm will ever release a full manual instax camera? Even at a high price I have to imagine it well sell well and serve as a halo product for the brand.
This does look like a fun goofing around sort of camera for less critical stuff. But damn that film is expensive!
Also, what the heck jacket is Chris wearing that has all that organization inside? I need to get one of those.
You can get 60 shots for $37. Much cheaper than 120 medium format film.
Hello Chris Pixels
I gotta say... none of these made me want to pick up this camera...
But it gives some interactions with people, I started thinking about portable printer
@@iarosnapsinstax mini evo
That may be for you, but I found Instax to bring back the fun to photography, where there's no room for nanometer perfection, but tons and tons of excitement, imperfections, happy accidents, and weirdest "art". Bottom line: tons of fun for fraction of a price of anything else in my kit. Now, I do consider this one a bit expensive, but I have wished for exp compensation and flash contol for my SQ.
It was funny when my zoomer brother asked if I could recommend Instax, myself having shot Fuji X since Nikon abandoned high-end APS-C in 2015/16. I did a double-take but ultimately told him to go for it since all the other instant options are so much more expensive in total cost or worse in result. "Oh hey, Instax is actually made by the same company that made this" (this is me holding up the X-T5 to him) I don't know who did the most whiplashy double-take in that exchange, lol.
Very interesting stuff, but not sure what to think. 200$ for internal color filters?
I couldn't believe the price when I heard it earlier today
What? $39.99?
@@davidhunternyc1 I wouldn't pay that much. Would need a mortgage for the film. Had a polaroid when I was a kid, it was a present, but all my money went on it.
If the exposure compensation works well then that’s all I really need in an Instax camera.
Usually photos from modern cameras looks like pictures. Pictures from Instax Mini 99 looks like photos. Simply amazing feel.
2024 will be a good year for photographers
The year is already 1/4 over lol
Idk why ppl are still talking like it’s January. It’s almost April
Looking at this toy/joke product, it must be irony!! 😂
Imo, I would be specific on that front.
Back when I used polaroid, the prints were larger and looked sharper. Now in 2024, we can have tiny soft looking prints, what an advance. I think 5x4 inch is as small as I would like to go, surely we could have a camera with a built in printer that could do that?
Maybe it took longer to develop because it's colder outside?
Fuji's instax line has gotten better and better and with this one it looks really mature in its design and the style is a lot closer to it's current non-instax cameras. That just makes me want them to join with Pentax in putting out a 35mm camera again because they could really kill it with their design.
Like if there was a film version of the X100 I think many people, myself included, would explode
For anyone commenting on instant film being poor quality, be it Fuji or Polaroid, I recommend watching "The impossible project". The guy that brought Polaroid instant film back to life bought the original factory with the original machines but the original recipe was useless to him - those chemicals didn't exist anymore. So his team had to completely start from scratch, reinventing the whole film completely.
Yeh and Polaroids film sucks.
I think for stuff like this, simpler is always better, even with my Mini Neo 90- I just popped that bad boy in auto and let it rip. Once you want to start experimenting with filters and effects, might as well get a printer at that point and send processed images from your device.
You should check out the backs Nons makes for the hasselblad 500 series. If you're ever back in Seattle I'll gladly lend mine out for a day.
Love it! It's fantastic. Really frees up the full potential of Instax film. This stuff can actually be SHARP!
whats the point of the focus wheel if all the photos are blurry? 😂
Does it shoot slow motion?
When is the entertainment industry going to turn these guys into a light comedy series?
We need an Instax Wide Evo
Will never happen because of the sheer size of the wide format film. Might get one of these though since it's not a digital camera like the Evo
I applaud y'all covering this camera (even though I'm more of an modded SX-70 and Polaroid person), but from the comments, this is SO not your target audience and they don't understand the desire for instant film. :P
UA-cam is lowering the audio by 1dB in this video because it wants it at 14 LUFS
I like it
Do focus ranges actually work? Everything is so soft
Just a tip, let the photos ‘develops’ upside down (dark). The colours will be way better.
I'm never sure if that's just a placebo effect with me, but I carry one of those soft little lens bags to pop them in as well to develop. I too just have this feeling they develop better in the dark.
Love those guys. I'm not even interested in the photography product being reviewed! That Drake, ha ha ha ha.
I have an Instax.. but why are the images from this blurry?
They dont know how to shoot instant cameras
polaroid sx-70 next week !!!
6:38 I prefer the left one. who cares about shadows and highlights when it's about the edges? ;)
looks really cool but i'm not sure it offers enough to upgrade from the Mini 90.
The monochrome film has charm, but the image degeades overtime I just found out the other day. My instax albums have been sitting in a tote for a couple years and the color shots that were much older are still great the monochrome photos are looking pretty muddy.
Still no Instant camera with manual controls and a decent aperture like the old foldables of Polaroid back in the day, that were bigger than Instax Wide and you did get some separation.
Sure there are. Check out MINT and NONS. The MINT InstantKon RF70 is awesome. Get your $$$$ ready.
I don't like how modern instant cameras like the instax produce tiny images, and I thought normal Polaroid was a bit of a size tradeoff back in the 90s...
Edit: And the lack of focus and proper viewfinder options I just reminded myself of how my generic Polaroid had zoom and focus and all that, some even had autofocus
Tiny? Its medium format lol
@@michaelbell75 the images are roughly half the size (6x4cm) of an actual polaroid (8x8cm), wich itself is already a cropped down 35mm print (10x15cm) size
so yes, its TINY
@@Space_Reptile Huh? 35mm film is 24mmx36mm which is TINY. Instax Mini film is 46mmx62mm Its medium format.
Need an Instax Mini 86 with Mel Brooks' signature...
How does it charge? Internal battery via usb-c?
External charger via USB. No option to charge in camera.
Was just about to buy a Hasselblad 907X 50C but fck that, I'll get this Instax 99 instead!
the weather is terrible XD - i prefer the 20-30°C here :P
This but in wide! Fuji you can do it!
Fuji hates the wide format. Been 8 years now...
@@michaelbell75 Yep, that much is clear. The when the best wide camera is 20 years old at that.

I'm a simple man I see a Monty Python reference and I upvote.
mini evo is the goat.
It's really not. Digital camera that prints out on film is silly.
Seems like the Lomo 110 that Gordon Laing used seems better for a blast of retro photography
Need this but W I D E
Any new Instax Wide?
Nope. Fuji obviously has no desire to make a new one.
Missing metal body, back lcd screen, selfie mirror and please put the hole in the middle, the battery that can be swapped is good 👍
This seems like Fuji's response to Lomo's Automat
When will Fuji put a good lens on these things??????
The film itself is great! If you have the printer and print from your phone e the images are really great, way better than Polaroids.
Just picked up a mini 40, it's cute and fun. I don't see this as worth the extra money... exposure compensation looks useful but the creative options just look cheesy to me. Maybe if it had autofocus I would be interested, but this one doesn't do it for me.
looking at your results, they look soft focus on all settings.... no sale for me
It's instant film lol. No one wants or shoots instant film for sharp photos. Go buy a digital mirrorless camera.
@@michaelbell75 Ansel Adams among other famous photographers sometimes used polaroid cameras. And non of their photos were as bad as this crap.
Do we need to pre-order this one too? 😂
Yep. It's going to sell a ton.
This camera packs all the defects that photographers in the past wanted to avoid at the touch of a dial
I wish I had a film dealer
