  • Join us live as we explore Robert Carsen's new Royal Opera production of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. We've curated a selection of bonus features and interviews on our site for anyone who would like to delve deeper following the Insight broadcast: bit.ly/ROHrosen...
Director of Opera Kasper Holten will interview American soprano Renée Fleming about taking on the role of the Marschallin, a princess who seduces a much younger lover in the Count Octavian.
Professor Margaret Reynold from Queen Mary, University of London will join the event to discuss the historical context of the work, which had its premiere in Dresden, Germany in 1911.
Later in the evening, director Robert Carsen, whose previous productions for The Royal Opera include Falstaff and Dialogues des Carmélites, will provide further details of his new production. Carsen will also take part in a Q&A with members of the audience and those watching at home - send in your questions via Twitter using #ROHrosenkavalier.

So many things have brought myself and my wife here from Hawaii, and from years ago. Thank you so much ROH and Ms. Fleming for sticking with the part until I grew into the person to see it. We made the trek to ROH and were so glad we did. the Met HD version with my favorite Elina Garanca was excellent also. Now we do not have to get on a plane every time we want live versions. And, thank you all for your helpful, funny comments.

I was in this play at age of 8-9 years old (2000-2001) at the royal opera house. I performed as the young servant. I would love if anyone can find the recording of the opera 🙂♥️

It is fascinating as always when Renee Fleming is talking about her work. The many words of "Prof. Margaret Reynolds however - much ado about nothing...

I disagree with the part about prof M Reynolds entirely ! I thought she was rather good and I learnt things that were new to me as did others I know . Also it is not like she just makes up what she is saying on the spot , she is given specific things to talk about by ROH and it is revised before hand to suit what they want . Also for Renee herself to congratulate her on it was something as Renee knows an awful lot .

Despite the quick speaking linguistic daredevil Kasper Holten is intensively accompanied by conductor Andris Nelsons in advertising for the ROHrosenkavalier I doubt that the extremely high quality of theSalzburg festival (having been restaged for a high definition film at the Baden Baden Festspielhaus with Christian Thielemann) will be reached - let alone be surpassed at the ROH.
Undoubtedly however the beloved star of the premiere will be once again the enchanting Renee Fleming with her ravishing Marschallin.

Ummm... how do neither of them know that there is indeed an opera by Strauss which features Pauline as a main character?!?! It's called Intermezzo, it premiered in 1924.

So this is basically Colette's Cheri? Is it inspired by that book?

Strange that the professor can't even pronounce "Marschallin". But nice talk. :)
