There are tons of videos that show this fix but all that I have found are missing a couple of key points on the reassembly phase. Yours included the extra info that I needed to get it done. Thank you.
Hey man, I've been dabbling in squarebodies for most of my life and I've done this repair a couple times. Usually 5+ years goes by before I get another one to fix and I always find myself looking it back up just to make sure I didn't forget how to do it and this was just the video I needed lol. Thanks for taking the time to post it up. Keep up the great work and Save the Squares!
I took apart old loose steering wheel years ago and just running junkyard find non- tilt and needs a signal switch so this video is gold to know how to put original tilt back after tightening screws with lock tight. I was at a lose to know where that funky white square with 2 copper legs went . Now I know.
Fantastic video, thanks for making it! I only need to change my ignition barrel but this shows how EVERYTHING on the column goes together..glad you got wipers and indicators now!
Memory lane, did my first tilt colum ohh 20 some years ago on my old suburban. No tools to speak off, fresh in Canada. Actually enjoyed doing it. Had forgotten about that till this vid. Good stuff
I like other commenters were looking for the high beam/signal switch installation, that plastic clip from the actuator to the rod that fell out on removal happened to me too, that detail of how it goes in would be great. The beginning was very informative on removal of the various parts.
You fast forward through the steps to replace the wiper switch in the column. Any chance you can show us how to replace that step by step? Mine isnt attached to the puch rod for the high beam switch and I dont know how it goes together.
Same...I just crawled under the dash and activated the high beams. Sounds shitty, but at least I'm able to see on the rare occasions I'm driving my square at night
It is very easy just remember how you took it apart and it goes right back together the same way... Thank you for watching the video I am glad you like it.
Be thankful it's not a 77-86 Chevy custom deluxe I have changed three ignition key cylinders and they are bolted in no button,no screw a bolt .. and have ran into the retaining snap ring under the horn cap on the steering wheel shaft above the nut that holds the steering wheel on, and the horn cap retainer cup with the torx screws in the center of the steering wheel and the 77-81 custom deluxe trucks again are bolts.. fun!!
Damn GM tilt wheel mess. Dodge used those aggravating things in their vans for a couple of years. Currently my wipers only have high speed. I'm hoping that it is a wiper motor but if it is the switch I think that I will try & find another type of steering column. I have rebuilt 3 of these monsters, an 83 Olds, an 83 Malibu & this 88 Dodge camper van, not willing to go at it again. Gotta go that deep just for a wiper switch? And getting the harness down through the column, crap. I can but will try a lot of other options first because those things are a nightmare. Thanks for the video & I hope the engineer responsible for this has nightmares.
I've been looking for this video of changing a wiper switch. It's like the only one available. When you changed out the unit, did it have to unbolt from the housing or does it just pop off easily? I need a new one but they don't make them anymore for my car. And I'm wondering if it's possible to change it without breaking the column down, lol.
Thanks for the video, I dropped my shifter lever spring in the steering column and I’m making an attempt to fish it out. Do you know the size socket that is required for the inverted torx bolts on the tilt that become loose?
I did the same thing and can tell you that once you get about half of the parts in this video out you will be able to fish the spring out with a magnet.
I used a hinge pin puller from AutoZone and the bolt broke off inside the hinge pin on both sides. I tried to drill them out and use an easy out, but the I can't drill through the bolt. ANY IDEAS OUR MAGIC ON HOW TO GET THESE HINGE PINS OUT. THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Did the steering column have the high and low beams on that lever switch. I have a 1985 and to switch my headlights I do not have the floor button it’s in that turn signal lever. And I cannot get my low beams to work and I think it’s within my steering column
I have a 1985 c10 and I saw that you put a 88-94 steering wheel on your truck how do you get the horn to work? I got the wire It just doesn't want to clip in
@@JCustomFab the horn works when the wire is pushed so I know it would work the black sleeve with the tabs just bends out of place and it won't go straight in
on my 85 c10, when i use my turn signal and make my turn my break lights will not work until i jiggle the the turn switch again. then the breaks lights work until i use the turn signal again,. i have jiggle the turn signal arm after every turn. someone told me it is a loose metal ring in the column. they said it breaks the ground. is this true? i have never taken a column apart and very nervous about trying it without knowing what i am looking for. thanks, Bill.
Stupid question. Sometimes me square doesn't want to turn off. Wouldn't that be the switch at the bottom of the column. It's actually New but thinking it's not working properly
You have to turn the lever until the notch lines up with the slot in the wiper switch, then it'll seat , The aftermarket levers are about 1/16th"+ longer than GM's, so it'll have a little end movement in comparison.
I replaced the lock cylinder because it wasn't letting me turn the key all the way back to kill the truck or pull the key out, the new lock cylinder is doing the same thing. Any idea what would be causing this?
Hello good night, excellent video, with it I can already know what that game occurs in the steering column of my chevy, could you tell me the name of the extraction tool you used, I'm looking for it and I can't get, if possible, which one is the manufacturer. Thank you
Awesome video, I'm not looking forward to doing this Job, but my steering wheel is 10x looser than yours so I imagine the screw have completely backed out , or something is broken
ok u have 2 part column housing on 86 and 98 it all one piece, that why ur part number for wiper switch not work on 87 and above a lot of ppl in trouble if not tell the year of ur truck
wish I seen this before, u have the part number for the wiper switch, for tilt all I could find was the none tilt, parts store ppl butt stupid I the ll the what iahve and act like chevy never made one
Sorry man... When I made this video I didn't realize how many people really needed More detail I will be producing a new one here in the future. But it's a few months out.

Nice job! great video and I appreciate it, saved me a lot of messing around.

They are such a drag when all loose and unstable, nice work !
Nice video. I’m going to do this soon. Also going to film myself so I can remember how to go back😂
I'm glad you like the video make sure to share your video with me and I'll check it out

Great job...great video!
Awesome!! made it look easy👍

Cool same steering wheel as my early 94 Chevy Silverado Z71..
At 9:22 in the video do you know what that part is called that has the wires connected to the thing that the wiper and turn signals goes into.
Thank you sir.

In order to get to the switch, you pretty much have to tear the column down.
Thanks for the video, I dropped my shifter lever spring in the steering column and I’m making an attempt to fish it out. Do you know the size socket that is required for the inverted torx bolts on the tilt that become loose?

Wow, you might have to pull the column on and put it in a vice. And try to use a punch on it with a backing plate.
Where did you source the steering wheel? Looking to do the same swap
where did u get par DS397 for ur truck, all the parts store say not for R10 truck
Did the steering column have the high and low beams on that lever switch. I have a 1985 and to switch my headlights I do not have the floor button it’s in that turn signal lever. And I cannot get my low beams to work and I think it’s within my steering column
Yes the column does have high and low beam on the turn switch.
I have a 1985 c10 and I saw that you put a 88-94 steering wheel on your truck how do you get the horn to work? I got the wire It just doesn't want to clip in
You may want to check the ground and the wire but the tabs might need to be slightly bent to clip in.
@@JCustomFab the horn works when the wire is pushed so I know it would work the black sleeve with the tabs just bends out of place and it won't go straight in
I’m in uk wot is that tool u use to get that clip out after u got the steering wheel off plz

How do you replace the wheel bearing.
Stupid question. Sometimes me square doesn't want to turn off. Wouldn't that be the switch at the bottom of the column. It's actually New but thinking it's not working properly
Nice work now I will have to watch it a couple more times to fix my steering column did it have cruise control?
Cruise control is very similar process With a few more wires. thank you for the comments and I really appreciate it
how do you push the blinker lever back in? Mine will only go in 3/4 of the way and pushing it hard but it wont budge.
I'm having an issue after I turned the key the accessory position will not turn back off. Help!
Those bottom 4 bolt hold the tilt release bearing and them getting loose have trashed several gm steering columns..
What’s the wires you replaced?
I replace the turn signal And wiper switch

Why did u speed past the turn switch installation procedures 😢 that is just as important
what year is ur truck
1985
You totally skipped over removing the turn signal/wiper switch
Cool a suntune II tach you don't hardly see them anymore..
wish I seen this before, u have the part number for the wiper switch, for tilt all I could find was the none tilt, parts store ppl butt stupid I the ll the what iahve and act like chevy never made one
You went way too fast through the wiper switch removal and install. And that’s what I needed. Very disappointing.
Sorry man... When I made this video I didn't realize how many people really needed More detail I will be producing a new one here in the future. But it's a few months out.
ok u have no cruise control now I see the difference
H
cut a lot of removal and install parts out of video
