As a kid in the mid 90s, me and my dad picked up this guy hitch-hiking in the pouring rain in Vermont. He wanted a ride up this mountain road, and we dropped him off in this nondescript spot, he just kinda walked into the woods where there was a sign that just had a rainbow on it.

I just wanted you to know I may only be one person but I've been to going to gatherings since I was 14.i have watched so many documentaries about rainbow gatherings it ridiculous searching for something that I feel I could show somebody who never had been to a rainbow to spark there interest. You are the only one I have ever seen actually put together a video that 100% represents the whole imbodyment of rainbow and its purpose. I just wanted you to know I watched it from start to finish and it really moved me thank you for doing such a beautiful documentary it is a powerful video and I hope you make more.

oh man..that is very sad to hear for me...if every gathering is like that in the video, i never ever wanna go to any one ! and i am a hippie at heart !!!!!!! i love people, music, nature, animals. but i dont need to be touched by 10 people at the same time to feel peace or freedom. it looks very odd to me and even if we want to, we can not come together with 5000 people and love everyone dearly from the start. its not possible. and its good like that.

I went to the national rainbow gathering 2 years ago. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Working to help the others around you, digging shitters, baking bread, random pocket trades, hauling water, chopping wood. It's so beautiful. There is truly an air of love in the air.
I hope to go again next year.

It was absolutely incredible. 90% of the people i met were extremely moving, not only would these people who have nothing more in there pocket than anyone else give you the shirt off their back but they would give you the warmth and love under it as well. The forest looked good and it was maintaned as well. Everywhere you turn people are offering you food friendship and love.can't wait for 2014 and to help clean and set up. We love you!

I'm studying Event Management and currently writing my dissertation on the Rainbow Gatherings. This video has been my favourite thing to stumble across. So much love and hope for how a community of people from different backgrounds can live together peacefully and become a family!

I grew up wanting to be a hippie. I spent my youth seeking out "hippies" from the original generation. When I found the truth I became more disillusioned than I already was with "the establishment." I found a whole lot of dirty, lazy, disorganized, entitled weirdos. A good friend told me a story of trying to start her own commune in 69/70. She had a family farm and invited dozens of "hippies" to come and live with her. Together they would create their own utopia, unencumbered by society's expectations of them. Well, a farm takes work and pretty much nobody would work hard or succumb to a rigid schedule, which is often required of you on a farm. She said they would all lay around getting high, eventually referring to her as "the man" because she was more concerned with the harvest than getting high and having sex.
Many of those people went on to have families in the early 80s, spawning the Millenials. They mostly sold out and ended up, themselves, actually working for the man. Many became government employees (because they loved unions) while others became the greediest generation of corporate leaders to ever exist. Now, their spawn have become a modern, albeit twisted, version of them. The Millenials even resent, or hate, their parents' generation, as hippies did their parents. The difference being, the hippies' parents were actually quite accomplished and fantastic.
It is for this reason, and many others, that I refer to the Boomer/Hippie generation as HippieCrites. You can still find some of the hold outs living in small towns, or on coastal islands, with trashy properties and unkempt appearances. The generation as a whole is selfish, entitled and completely full of crap. I feel sad for the very few who truly believed and lived the philosophy properly, as they do not deserve the same criticism.

See the problem with what your saying is yes there are lazy hippies but there are alot non lazy ones as well. I would stay after many shows fiesties an helped pick up the mess trust me 70 % of the ppl who come are just coming to party but ther are a good number of us who put tons of work into these shows and gatherings. In a way we need to bring in the weekend warriors for multiple reasons one they are ones with money lol not to be blunt but it cost money to do anything second bringing in outside people makes the whole way of life grow it can open up a kids mind or can help ppl who feel they never found others like them. I totally agree that there alot lazy ppl but I no alot hippies that are not lazy at all some might move alittle slower than regular society lol but alot time you just need to find way to motivate an keep ppl on task. Trust me I totally understand what your saying there so many times iv bwn at shows an the parking lots end up trashed an garbage everywhere but most the time those are the ppl are the ones who only come to party its a hard subject but basically my point is your going to find lazy an crazy ppl in all aspects of life but you will also find good people ppl who work harder than most. I know I go three lots of funny situations because I'm a tree worker I get all kinds of tree huggers who don't understand how I could cut them down. That being said I don't work for these huge logging companies that tear forest apart. There are ways to log that actually benefit the Forrest an keep it alive. My point to saying whay I do is that I'm a hippy but also work my but off u promise most ppl nowadays couldn't handle the physical labor I endorse everyday. These gatherings are just about bringing ppl together the connections of tribes from threw out the lands. Things like that have happened in the native cultures forever. It just seem odd because we don't do that nowadays

I really hope I can find the ones in Canada. The scene where people were in a close circle and were hugging a person in the middle made me cry. @Midnight Philosopher we are one with God but yet at the same time different. We are qualitatively the same but Quantitatively different. God does not become illusioned by Maya. His pasttimes are spiritual and he has his own forgetfulness he undergoes for the sake of enjoyment. Not like our foergetfulness. His is submerged in loving assoaction with his devotees. But yet at the same time he is still in control of all.
He is inconceivable. To even consider yourself God is most foolish.
Show me you are God. You hippies pretend to be humble, yet think you are God lol.

@Midnight Philosopher Wow, your replies to this man who actually wastes his time trying to make you understand the real deal, why drugs are bad and why centering one's spirituality around them isn't AT ALL the way just shows how completely ignorant you can be. "Size doesn't really matter", what do you measure your "size" in? Let me guess, points of DMT, tens of tabs of lsd, grams of mdma, deserts of peyote and all those funky dodgy alternative substances made in labs in China eager to fry your brain harder and give you a "better" understanding of the Universe. Your replies sound like you just read a sentence out of an article or a book and just slapped in here without even knowing how to read, while this man speaks to you from an educated perspective. I bet your brain has like 10 tabs left before you become a mushroom which is "one with the earth auuuuuuuummmmm".
Real spirituality can be most easily seen in the buddhist monks and shaolins especially from Tibet. Not in fried out wannabe hippies pretending to be "Gods".
If you were a God, like everyone else and you'd be also aware of this universal interconnected concsiousness then you wouldn't be an ignorant a-hole making smug remarks on youtube :)
Before you even bother to reply to me and slap another remark or copy-pasted statement, skip to minute 6:44.

A large enough food forest that was properly maintained, could help a community like this out a lot after your gone. Governments do not want peace. A society based on kindness, understanding, where people share what they have and actually love each other makes most of the functions governments assume unnecessary. War, poverty, violence, control of thought, and many other things, are all employed to keep the population of this planet in servitude to those who sit in power. There is a way to change the status quo, but the minds of most people are so welded closed they are impossible to free. Love and Light.

Terrorists are governed by individuals exploiting religious concepts. Governments try to stop these people, and in the process damage the civilian population. Though the government does not benefit the people all the time, they are wholly and utterly necessary, to claim that a government should be dissolved is to wish more death and anarchy than ever seen before.

wish we all can go back in time and live the hippie way of life. i have many hippie friends and glad i got to experience a gathering like this in 1978 in nelson BC Canada. i was 8 yrs old and my parents and i went camping and when we woke up in the morning,we were surrounded by a few hundred hippies! we had a blast! mom bought some pottery, and dad tasted their food. my dad was impressed on how well they made good food. and i got to meet lots of friends in my age group. and never had another one again in nelson BC. so sad. i just love this type of gathering and the openness of the hippie culture.

I have just listened to this for a while and started to weep silently.
We have a fullmoon celebration every month in order to keep the rainbow-feeling from wearing off after beeing back from a gathering .
Of course magic can and does happen during this celebration and it's even close to coming home, but it won't put up with staying at a rainbow site for weeks with more time to really really come home.
    I do really miss you.

I've smoked 5 years of my life and my social integration was not affected, these people are not meeting because of drugs, they meet because they are tired of people that believe in fictional figures and wonder around the streets like robots, with nothing to show for except making their master rich...We are all the slaves of society, I used to work for 2$ per hour, and billions of people work for less, do you think that is the worth of human life? That is the society you praise?? You should contemplate on that! If drugs were controlled by the state do you think there would still be drug cartels? We choose in this life if we want to be parasites on this earth, or just another animal. I've seen more intelligent and moral conscious pets than humans and because of the stupidity of 70-80% of the population, the rest of us have to suffer, and where else to relax and get away from all that than Nature!?

circa 74, Grassy Key, FL, these people literally saved my life.
evidently there was/likely still is, a core group of Rainbow People who are no-mads and travel (like i did--hitchhiked 27,000 miles thru 41 states, canada and mexico over course of 5 years).
well, said date i was particularly despondent after hitching from long island to meet my girlfriend who left me after an argument and was supposed to be in Coconut Grove, near miami, but when i got there i found out she'd just left for colorado, where i took off for later...but before that i met a viet vet and his girlfriend who were very liberal...so i went off with her, but only to pour out my woes after she drove me to buy a fifth of tequila, which i drank in 45 mins on a *two day* empty stomach, and consequently went mad and then wound up dry heaving the entire night. well, one of these rainbow people dudes stood by my side monitoring me ensuring i wouldn't fall asleep and go into a coma, therefore saving my life.
however, it was sad to see in this doc how the forest service law enforcement branch manhandled these gentle people, all because of [an alleged!] law that claimed their gathering was illegal?! a clear violation of the constitutional right to *peacefully* assemble, as far as i can see. even if it was against the law doing so on government land (ie in a state park), why enforce it if no-one was hurting anyone else? it would be different if they were permanent squatters..
    anyway,
    peace.love.peace to all the Rainbows!
and to ALL human beings, unconditionally!

Beautiful times. 💜 There was a community in Wales, UK ( Talley Valley ) called the Rainbow People. This goes back to early '70's, but they all lived there a long time, into this Century I'm sure.
They built & lived in home made teepees, schooled their own kids. There was a documentary about them on BBC in the '80's ; I remember seeing my Nephew riding around camp on his bike.
It wasn't an easy life for them, with UK wet weather , I don't know if they still exist there. If anyone knows?

I was at the 1st gathering. At first we had to dodge rangers to get in. But later a ranger came and showed us how and where to build latrines. How to keep the water clean. You have to remember, the Rainbow people are like Martians to the work-a-day people. By being free and loving threatens their ways of life. So IMO, the Rainbow needs a bridge to the work-a-day world. a small group who can communicate "Rainbow" in a language the rangers and others can understand and listen to the Ranger's fears, needs and wants and be able to negotiate respectfully. The Rainbow gathering is pretty fragile which we saw when the rangers freaked and started shooting. How do you deal with freaked rangers with guns? I think strong negotiation might work but you have to meet them half way. May be have a Boy Scout and girl scout uniforms. Speak their language so they can understand you. Good luck Rainbows - you're on the right track.

There was actually a scientific discovery made on 9/11. There are satellites that measure the electro-magnetic field put out by the Earth and on the day there was a dramatic change in it. From there evidence has been seen that our thoughts and feelings literally manifest themselves outside of us in some form. Now imagine a gathering like this, with all that love and spiritual energy being put out by so many people at one place. Perhaps it's the only reason we're not extinct already.

Ghost story.....At the rainbow gathering in 2009 in Pennsylvania. I think thats the right year anyway. It was right before the loads of people showed up and we were camped away from everyone else, along side the main trail that goes from the parking area and leads down a large hill into the main clearing. It was dusk, so light was fading fast and we had a fire going, we were both sitting there having a pretty deep conversation about life and spirituality when we decided to head down the trail to the clearing to find some food. At this moment we were standing up and some people who had been walking down the trail stopped to take a break about 30 yards below us. Anna says hey do you hear that? I could clearly hear someone walking in the wood behind us, the thing is there was nothing out that way as we were quite a ways from the main clearing and facing the direction of all the lights and people. The foot steps could be heard coming from our left and below us, heading straight for those people who were taking a break on the trail. I looked and saw nothing where my eyes said i should be seeing what was making those steps. There was nothing to be seen and I could actually see where the steps were landing, leaves being kicked up and what not. What ever it was walked up to those people on the trail, whom were talking to each other never noticed anything, but the steps definitely slowed down as it made a turn going passed them, like it was checking them out, and then it came straight at me and anna. Anna was fumbling most of this time with her key chain trying to find a little flashlight she had, what ever was making those steps came right up to the other side of the fire pit without stopping just real slow and anna shown her light at it and said "hey", and it took off up the hill right past me. The entire time it sounded like an invisible child power walking, taking short steps but fast, and when it took off passed me it was still powerwalking just machine gun like steps.. if that makes any sense. There would have been no way for me to chase it it was so fast and we both took off running down the hill, on a funny note there are people at these festivals who remain stark naked the entire month of the gathering and roll in mud and what not, so me and anna are flying down the trail in terror no less and run right into this 6ft5 giant naked man and we all yelled in fright, good times.. No idea what it was, anna was really disturbed so i took a buddy back up and got the stuff and we moved camp that night. Ive had people tell me forest spirit, alien, ghost, elf, gnome. It seemed very robotic in a way, just very mechanical in its rhythmic step, like it couldn't come to a complete stop but could only slow its pace... Ive had things happen late at night, or in bed but never when i was standing up fully alert, observation mode, my brain struggling really hard to make sense of this two minute event..

Well, actually the first Rainbow Gathering was in 1972, organized by and for returning Vietnam veterans, who wanted to celebrate the 4th of July, without all the noise and glorification of war.
(I agree with the point you made -- I'm just adding some detail)

Wow just blows me away that 29 years after my last gathering - Vermont '91 - (which I scouted winter of '90 and proposed to site council) just blows me away - what a sweet suprise to see Joanie & Garrick & Fantuzi and Mike aka Nick Beat 😋 after all these years - big hugs you guys 🥰

Like a swarm of locusts , they land , play and party then leave a mess for the unfortunate local people to clean up !
Having a bus myself , but not part of the Rainbow Family , I would come into an area where there had been a gathering just weeks earlier and find the local people looking at me and my bus with disdain just because I had long hair , lived in a bus and traveled around doing my work .

Winter Star It's more of a prayer and a goal.
While not everyone will fully embody this ideal, it will be in their hearts, and it will always remind them what we are here for.

As someone who was born in the 50's I think that one of the most disturbing things I have seen is how the park ranger morphed into some sort of special forces soldier. WTF?

They just want to feel big and powerful over peaceful people who they perceive as nothing more than dirty hippies. :( To people like them, it feels good to treat people like crap. Dont even ask me why. Its just sad.
