    I never write comments on youtube. But this documentary touched me in a very special way. When I was 18 I went to India. Somewhere in Rajasthan we stopped for one night in a small town in the desert I don't remember where, perhaps near Udaipur. It was late afternoon and I decided to go for a walk by myself. After some time 2 children started dragging me by my hand into a dusty abandoned area on the side of a busy highway. It was one of these camps just like in the video. I was a little uneasy because I thought I might be being lead to be mugged. But there was something so enchanting about the people I couldn't help but find out what was going to happen. They were the most amazing beautiful people I had ever seen, all in such colourful outfits. Finally they sat me on a wooden bed and told me to wait. A very old man in a huge turban came and did a puppet show for me with dozens of people surrounding me. It was very surreal and only to this day watching this video did i get the same sensation I had that day. Thank you for making such a truly amazing documentary.

Rajasthan is a truly historic, majestic & stunning region in Northern India. I also have some ancestry from Northern India & Rajasthan. I'm told by many South Asian/Indian peoples, that i look very Kalashi or Kashmiri, hence my name here. The Pakistani peoples tell me i look like their peoples, especially from the North of Pakistan, so who knows! haha It's just nice to know where some of our ancestors come from. I'm ethnically diverse, so it's really good to know & be able to put some pieces of the puzzle together. I'm proud to know & i'm sure you are too. Take care.

Thank you for showing me what my distant ancestors must have been like hundreds of years ago before they traveled through so many countries. Beautiful to see how these people look, dress, dance, and their ways of life. This was extremely enlightening, and I love how they welcomed, trusted and included you. Few years ago, when the Roma (Gypsy) Taxi driver in Frankfurt to my amazement almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state in India, I decided to work on this and find out how.

    Since the Taxi Driver understood the language of Rajasthan, I went through the history of Rajasthan or Rajputana as it was originally called and discovered that there was a huge exodus of the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan around 1050 AD who, as the history says, fought 17 wars with Mohammed Ghauri. Most left with women folks leaving empty villages. Most Roma belong to the fine Rajput warrior caste and others were farmers called Jat who also were in the army.

    While the great king was keen on continuing battles, many soldiers did not want to fight more wars and stayed at home. For a Rajput staying at home during war was a stigma. They were taunted for staying home at the time of war.

    Therefore, as a folk song of Rajasthan says, they left their native land in groups. They left from no other part of India. Some went west and are called Gypsies or Roma now and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow color clothes and with huge moustache. You can see them on google by clicking “Lambada in south India ". I am from Rajasthan but live in south Indian city of Hyderabad and hence see Lambadas daily.

    I was further shocked again when our Gypsy (Lambada) maid mostly understood an old Hungarian Roma lady talking in Romani about Nazi atrocities on a BBC program on TV while I understood it by reading the English captions. Apparently, the two ladies 9000 miles away now spoke same language spoken about 1000 years ago in their land of origin. We being from Rajasthan still use many of their words.

    On the way to west, Roma took words from Persian like bibi and many other tongues including Greek (drost for road) and from Armenian and so on. Also, few joined them on the way from Sindh, another Indian province, now in Pakistan. They are still called Sinti within Roma and words like laklo, lakli, chavo are from Sindhi.

    They somehow lost their surnames of fine Rajput warrior clans. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan, Shekhawat, Nainavat Rathore, etc. However, I found only one exception in Poland. One Roma has Mirga as surname which he said was not Polish but Roma. Rajputs have a surname, Mirdha. I am sure this must be same.
    But they kept first Indian names until 19th century like Amos Bihari and his daughter Panna Cinkova, both great Roma musicians from Hungary. Panna meaning Emerald is a pure Rajasthani name not used in other parts of India. You may look in Google for “Panna Cinka . If they were not Indians, why otherwise would they have Indian names in Europe in the year 1711?

    Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani (or Marwari) and Hindi, both of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin nak(nose) bal(hair) angusth(finger) bersh(year) diwas(day), prabhat(morning), gandh( smell)sassu,sussro ( mother and father in law, from rajasthani) saalo , Sali (brother and sister in law) from Rajasthani) chora(boy) chori(girl) cior(chor, meaning thief)) gia sov, thalle, upral purano( old) dukh, kasht, tato, langhal(lame) maang, des, lajja and so on. About half are from Rajasthani and rest from Hindi both of which originate from Sanskrit. I know hundreds. There are thousands. Luis Mori, another Roma has sent me a huge list of Romani words which I match with my Roma maid's vocabulary. Sometimes grammar has changed to European style, like we would say sov gia and Roma would say gia sov. Same meaning though. Has slept. Also, all Indian languages including today's Rajasthani has two yous, one for Junior and one for senior. Romani and the language of Lambada even today have only one you which is "tu "used for Juniors and for very close ones which must have been so 1000 years ago.

    Romani words are from pre-Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit like hiv (him in
    Sanskrit) for snow or ice is used while we in India now say barf which is Persian. Please go to the following in to see more. “Romani an Indian lost Language by Adriano, an Italian Roma from whom I have learned much and also“Roma girl from Kosovo goes to India"

    All Roma had mustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma were till recently practiced in India like Roma breaking the plate if animal licked it. My mother used to give the plates to beggars if our dog ever licked it even once. Also, food once served on table but not eaten does not go back to Fridge or saved for eating later. That is why death rate within Roma during great European plague was so low as claimed by scholars.

    Roma had also carried our proverbs like "while choosing a daughter in law, believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girl's family was more important than her beauty. Another common proverb is “If the road is crooked, you can't walk straight.

    Roma eventually lost their religion, quite understandably but Sara kali of southern France is a Hindu deity of Goddess kali favourite of Rajputs. The deity is immersed in water body every year like we do in India. The Vatican has not recognized this deity as it has no link to Christianity. Romani also has an unusual word & quot;trishul & quot; from Sanskrit and Hindi meaning a spear with three fingers. This spear is associated with Hindu God Mahadev or Shiva and the war cry of Rajputs Regiment in India till today is & quot; Har har Mahadev.

    Please see on You tube "Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference Dr. Hancock who is a Roma makes very scholastic analysis of Romani history from European side. He successfully dismantles myths like Roma are old Jews or from Egypt or came from within the earth. He establishes that Roma indeed came from India. However he has not said much about which part of India are they from and which language from India they speak. He only mentions "Indian Language" while there is nothing like Indian Language. We have hundreds of languages. India had hundreds of independent kingdoms. Rajputana, as Rajasthan was called then had many kingdoms too. Prithviraj Chauhan was the king of Ajmer in central Rajasthan from whose army Roma came.

    He also links Romani with Sanskrit while truth is that Romani has words from Rajasthani and Hindi alone both of which originate from Sanskrit. Romani is made of languages which have Sanskrit base and not directly from Sanskrit. There are many words in Romani which none else from India except those from Rajasthan will understand like tato meaning hot. He also says Roma are Doms who burn dead bodies which is certainly not true. Doms live about 1000 miles away from Rajasthan and are dark skinned.

    Many Roma have come to Delhi and Jaipur in Rajasthan to get their DNA tested and were doubly assured of their Rajasthan roots. Also, one may see Romani Dances in India-Kalbelia of Rajasthan which is same as Flamingo dance of the Roma. Even the dress of the dancers are same.

    As a student in the US during seventies, I saw some slightly brown students speaking language somewhat familiar to me. They said they were new Roma migrants to the US from Spain but I did not know about Roma at that time.

    I have received many mails from some Roma stating Roma were Doms and untouchables from India and so on. This should not be true. First, there are no Doms in Rajasthan. Second, Roma who came to south still have mostly Rajput surnames or Gotra and very few Bhil (a jungle tribe, but soldiers too) surnames. Gotras or lineages dont change in India. Third, down trodden and timid would not venture leaving home to travel thousands of miles and fourth, Doms are very dark even for Indian standards while Roma are not. Fifth, Romani has many war related words including a word for prisoner of war as Dr. Hancock says. Only a martial clan would use and keep alive these words.

    There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena (We would say pra and behna). Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while humanity in the entire world now melts away in two generations.

    I am in contact with many European Roma from whom I gather some new facts time to time. I have also gathered the above information from history of Rajasthan. For more information you can what’s app me on +91-9440805300.

      you see these poses they strike, each time you want to take a picture take out money first, no filming or camera without showing the bank note. thats why they they naturally will strike poses because its business.
      its expensive to just to see a show of these dances as all desert dance show agents and tours prey on them and want to keep exclusivity.

A ray of hope and a lost history full of wonders - right from a manuscript dated thousands of years back on how to build an airplane and fly to all the way to deep techniques of meditation and achieving the otherwise impossible unity with the universe through enlightment. Fantastic movie, I loved it and some parts actually made me cry. We here in the US have so much of everything right at out fingertips that the very thought of hardship or survival is unknown and seldom experienced. So much food, so much water and such thick forests yet human beings here in America still seem to resort to crime, to greed and to corruption. A simple lifestyle like this creates such beautiful people with so much happiness in their hearts and souls yet living with so little. With all due respect the term less is more is so very true and this movie hits that point home. Thank you for filming this and sharing it on You Tube. Martin Sleep

    • @helenalford2831
      @helenalford2831 5 років тому +2

      Your points are irrelevant, especially because immigration has nothing to do with this. All humans deserve safety, decent living conditions and the right to practice their culture and be with their family - that's a basic agreement that civilised people have come to. Roma people are not separate from this. Quite honestly when people use the term 'integrated' for people who have abandoned their community and culture it sounds a lot like fascism.

    • @helenalford2831
      @helenalford2831 5 років тому +7

      I live in a neighbourhood in the UK where about 70% of the population are Muslims and the other 30% are Slovak Roma. Not saying everyone always gets on perfectly, but for the most part it works. We had a street party last week with games for the kids, I know nearly everyone in my street. My little stepson plays out every day and we don't worry about him. I know that people are just people, we have different cultures but most people in the end just want to be happy and have a peaceful life with their family. That understanding and being able to live in peace with other people as a result, brings happiness. What you are saying is all about fear of what you don't know. I don't live in a 'mono-cultural hellhole', whereas you probably do.

    • @helenalford2831
      @helenalford2831 5 років тому +5

      You're making a lot of assumptions here Fillip and misrepresenting what I said. I feel that I shouldn't be having this discussion because immigration has nothing to do with the video and I don't as a rule respond to this 'white power' drivel. However, your comments really made me think. I don't know what your history is like but this made me think of the way the Aboriginal peoples of Australia must have felt during the program by the white settlers to 'breed the blackness out of them'; a program which involved removal of children and the almost total destruction of an ancient race of people. That program only ended in the 1950s or 60s.
      However, that was a form of genocide which really happened.
      In fact when you look at history and the world today white Europeans control the majority of the world's resources and the power - we are the aggressors on the global stage not the victims. We aren't likely to see the 'breeding out' of the white race, but if it happens it will be because people fall in love and nature takes its course over the generations. It will be because of people coming together, not because of hate.
      Perhaps if we all end up one colour, although that would be sad as diversity is a great thing, it might stop people killing and hating each other so much?
      Peace.

      Actually, caste system is a subcontinent thing cutting across religions. There are caste systems among Christians, Muslims, Jains, etc. It is just such a sad truth of this land and society. Kalbeliyas aren't untouchables. They are a nomadic tribe. But, yes for centuries, they lived on the fringes of society. Their art has finally been acknowledged and is one of the art forms which the Rajasthan Govt put in the Intangible Heritage List of UNESCO.

    • @AshutoshSingh-no6ed
      @AshutoshSingh-no6ed 7 років тому +2

      Nope. Sudras weren't untouchables. There was a group outside of these 4 who were assigned scavenging and handling animal carcasses, they were untouchables. Today, they are called Dalits. Dalits weren't part of the system. Their pitiful state is the reason why so many changed religions, but it was to no avail. That's why there are Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians. Modern day Dalit leaders like Dr. Ambedkar called for them to convert to Buddhism. And, Kalbeliyas are today Scheduled Tribe not Dalits.

Shudras were allowed inside temples, weren't untouchables and there are recorded instances of inter-marriage between Sudras and other castes. No such instance of Dalits and other castes. These are more so Varnas which were meant to be flexible changing with occupation. But, power corrupts and so when Brahmins grabbed power, there was this rigid form of caste system that we see today.
      Plus, these caste demarcations are very old and simplistic. Read up on the number of Castes among Hindus, Muslims, Jains and Christians in the 1931 Census which was done by the British not by any biased agendas. the numbers are mind boggling.

    Raphael you’re gotten a super documentary and got to be the first among them. Wow! Congrats!

    Many Westerners will look at these people and think they are living in poverty, but what they lack in material possessions they make up for with a rich culture. I see beautiful people who are clearly happy living in their close-knit community, sharing what little they do have and enjoying each others company, and having a good dance at the same time lol, while many Westerners walk around looking truly miserable. I loved this documentary!

    I was born and brought up in this region. All the things that this documentary have shown is true and many of these stuff i have done in my childhood. This documentary brought back my childhood memories like collecting the honey from bee's nest, riding camels and collecting wood from forest etc. But now circumstances have changed drastically but still you can find these things easily in western part of Rajasthan. Really nostalgic.

      @ Sunil Beniwal by due respect , I am an Indian too and your name suggest that you belong to Baniya or Jats society. and in this documentary they are showing Kalbeliya nomads, those who lives in wildness and moves around Wildness. you could have live around them in your vicinity. But you cannot claim to be one of them. as to my knowledge Beniwals are not nomads, I am trying to clear the facts. just being an indian, you cannot claim to be one of them.

      @Redwoodrebelgirl Hallo, I understand that you think I am trying to underline Sunil (Male Name) statement. u are right he did not mentioned he is one of them, but he is trying to be a part of the narrative in the Documentary. That is the Fact which I do not agree with him, since in reallity, Kalbeliay Nomads are poorest section of the society and as in the Documentary in beginn showned, that caste System has been abolished in india, but in truth Rajasthan is one of those state in India, where Caste Base Crime are at highest, they rank each year among the top 3 out of 29 states in india. And let alone living in that region, does not give him insight of the life of this peoples. so one cannot claim or compare to have live the same experience as they do(For Example: One cannot compare His Life experince living as White Person in USA with the one of Afro-Americans living in 60s in USA, just because that white person was living in the same cityor vicinity). and apart from that, if he belongs to those community like Jats, as his surname suggest, then these people practice Crime in thousands every year against low society Kalbeliya or Dalits. and this are Facts!!!!
      Just because this documentary is a good one showing Kalbeliya Lifestyle, no one who do attrocities to them should walk away saying to have known them or their Lifstyle when in reality this people make their day today life horrible. I can go on listing the problems they face in the society their, but it will not end.
      I am explaining this to you since I belong to a minority community in my country(india) and experience personally what it means.
      My Grandfather use to have a big property alongside our family graveyard, open Land outside city boundary and each year such Nomads use to travel and camp on his Land for free for few months and move on. but still I wont claim that I know them as this Documentary trying to show us. In reality if People in india belong to upper or higher class then these Nomads, then they ignore them as if they do not exist........ this is the truth.
