One of the most beautiful films ever. Period.
Thank you Michael Nyman for giving us such wonderful music.
I AGREE!!! WAS N IS, MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER. THE ACTRESS NEVER SAID A WORD, BUT WITH HER EYES, SHE SPOKEN VOLUMES. A TORTURED SOUL, FREED BY A STRANGERS LOVE...
I totally agree with you. Years and years later, listening to the soundtrack still moves me to tears
@@valeriefoulon6477 instantly! I really can't explain it, but the movie and music are so profound - I can't even explain why. I guess that's what a masterpiece is.
Definitely a masterpiece! Best acting from Holly Hunter. But the music awakens something deep within. It’s a feeling I can’t even put into words but I love how music can do that!
There are some pieces of music that must have come from the gods - this is one of them.
Has a sense of fleeting and impermanence to it. A god wouldn't understand that feeling.
Yoooo, how is Olympia prep going Phil? Think you're going to beat Brandon?

This by far is one of the most moving arrangements of music composed. Every note is a story told by the heart.
Hardly
Who? Me or Jae T?
Well, first of all, I've been playing the CLASSICAL piano my whole life, so I'm sort of biased in that sense. Though I understand why this music appeals to people, I've listened to enough arrangements to, in my opinion, have a say in this.
Jae T said BY FAR and THE MOST, which are strong words to use... Though this piece isn't utter garbage, not a lot of people would agree that it's the, BY FAR, most moving arrangement of music composed. The harmonics are rather predictable and simple, which leaves you somewhat under-stimulated. I've definitely listened to a lot more exciting music, that has had a much stronger effect emotionally. The rhythm is interesting sometimes, but it's not something outstanding, and has in many cases been topped by older music.
And no, I'm not one of those guys who says "new music is shit", because I know how stupid that is (and not true). But you have to realize that the old music is over a time span of hundreds of years. During that time, there have been plenty of bad and good pieces being composed, and the ones that remain played are the masterpieces filtered out over a long time. Nyman isn't a genius in that sense, and most of composers aren't. Therefore, it's really kind of ignorant to claim that this is BY FAR the most moving piece composed. If he had said that it's a moving piece that moved him, sure, but what he said is much more than that.
Also, I know how to play this, and I've analyzed it and everything. It's just that it's not an amazing piece. Maybe you feel all these emotions because you've watched the film and you recognize the song, but the music on its own is not that strong, to be frank.
+nana chan The answer to that will of course depend on who you ask, and there's nothing saying that the pieces I like are the best of the best. But I'll give you some examples of what I mean, nonetheless.
Of course, Chopin's works are amazing as usual and very emotional, but since they're played so much, you may get tired of that (but that doesn't make them less great). A generally known emotional piece is his first ballade, but for me, the middle part of his fourth Scherzo is a great example of how moving his music can be. Then of course, there are his famous nocturnes (I really like Op 62 no. 2, but all are great). Aside from that, I think that Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto is extremely well-written and emotional. Then there is Schumann's A-minor piano concerto (especially the third movement), and a lot of pieces from Beethoven (OH the 30th sonata is incredibly emotional imo, if you listen to the whole thing). Tchaikovsky has a lot of beautiful compositions as well, and a known one is the last part of his 6th symphony.
There is of course also more modern music (and older as well, for that matter) that are great, but I'm not as much of an expert on that.
Those are some just from the top of my head. Really though, the reason I like those are because they're touching to me, and they haven't all always been (some have taken a bit of time for me to like, but once I do, the effect is so much stronger than with other pieces). Since I'm really used to classical music, they may sound different to you if you're not. In that case, you're probably more likely to connect with Chopin's nocturnes. Also, the reason that nearly all are romantic composers is because I assumed that it should be emotional, and romantic composers truly are.
Note that we're used to music that we hear. If you're used to hearing modern music, you will probably enjoy it more than something you're not used to. Even though it may seem that people who listen to classical music are boring and just listen in an intellectual way, it's FAR from the truth :) The people who do have gotten used to that music just like most people have gotten used to modern music, and feel the exact same enjoyment. Trust me, because I've really liked both! Sorry for the wall of text, haha.
it was my opinion please calm down and get a hobbie because you have way to much time on your hands btw how old are you
The sensuality of this piece worked perfectly with the storyline of The Piano. What a journey its characters experienced and endured. Like waves, rising, falling. Strong and determined, flailing, flawed, then rising! We are moved by each note.
And how many of us have stories, to which this passionate masterpiece would serve as an ideal soundtrack?
So deeply moving.
When my mother was pregnad of me came to a concert of michael nyman and when I was 4 years old my parents buy this cd, when they play for firts time the cd I told my parents that I knew that song, my parents get shocked and told me that wasn't possible then I start to sing that song till the end. Traveling by train through fields and farms and over an inlet under a partly sunny autumn sky, I close my eyes and feel this masterpiece flow through and into my ears and into my mind’s eye. I can’t help but imagine the struggle between two angelic hosts, each led by their general.
This piano piece is as free as the boundless ocean...
Remember heard this piece on radio in late 1990-ties. Only thing I remembered about this music was the name of the movie. I watched the movie only few years ago. Before that I had theory that movie with such score must be good. And what a movie. What a play!
Genius. Leaves me speechless every single time.
This score haunted me throughout the film...seriously “where words fail music speaks”! Love nd warmth to all of those listening to this nd reimagining life !
I love classical music since a small boy...my heart nearly breaks hearing such as this. I recall hearing some of Bach, Mozart that ust flooded my eyes with tears.
Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel acted in the best film of the century in 1992 when they did the intensely moving, lovely and heartbreaking, "The Piano." I'd love having this played when people may come to remember something they liked re myself, when I am gone. My Lord, how beautiful this music is...that is why angels sing and music that gives us happiness beyond what we can explain will remain throughout eternity. Thank you for posting this!

I am grateful of Mr. Nyman's beautiful piece of music. I am trying to mend my heart after I broke it so many times. Your music is helping me to accept that it's okay to fall in love with someone I can't have. It hurts but I have already let my heart have the pleasure of giving love.
This music stirs my heart & pleases my soul every time heart it. I wish everyone would listen at least once, or see the movie:)
The kind of music that stirs the heart, teases your soul, makes your fingers weak and yet your ears yearn for more. Thank you for sharing this special moment.

me too x 12!
My sister introduced me to this piece a year and a half before my parents divorced. It still gives my the most wonderful chills that just seem to course through me. I am a writer and when I first started listening to it I imagined the characters in scenarios I hadn't even thought of yet, helping me to add more detail to the plot. After my parents divorced I forgot the name, the melody, but the memories were still there, I just found it again ten minutes ago, and I keep imagining the characters in my book, looking back at their past and how much they've grown during the the time I couldn't remember this piece. Earlier today, I came across another piece I my sister introduced to me at the same time, I didn't listen to it as much, but immediately it hit me, and all my memories flooded back. I started crying, still trying to remember the name, and then I found it. After almost three years, I found it, I keep seeing all my characters, and all my gf and friend's characters that we added into the story, standing on a high, grassy cliff, overlooking the ocean at sunset, remembering who they were, who they are now, who they loved and lost, who betrayed them, everything in their lives that led up to this moment, a long awaited, bittersweet ending. Our characters lives, and our own real lives, connected in our imagination. If I could thank the composer himself I would. This peice holds a place in my heart that is both heartbreaking and empowering, just like the ending of me and my friend's story, just like some of our past.
aww, I read that and that's so heart warming, I'm glad you found it :)
Thank you for sharing your experience in such delicated and vital way. Glad you found it💫
That was beautiful! Lovely to hear someone so moved by this music.

That is The Piano's soundtrack. A 1993 movie from Jane Campion. The music is from Michael Nyman, adapted from a traditional scot melody, Gloomy Winter, of Robert Tannahill.
I feel the same way 🙏

Just amazing
Such beautiful beautiful comments. Enough said
Can't believe this music wasn't nominated for an Academy Award
I think it is mostly because this is just one song and other great movies such the Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump and the Lion King had a more full repertoire of songs. However, non of these movies were nominated either so I got no clue. The Piano was nominated for Best Picture so that's something.
@@menzoueda2931 i believe it won best picture
At least Holly Hunter won best actress, and she played all the piano parts herself, although obviously she didn't write the score. All hail Michael Nyman.

Music- the great bringer of shared emotions, the arms of flight that surround and lighten the heart, unburden the soul
For all our differences we are much more the same
In that, let us find commonality that we may share, put down our arms no more to fight
But to dance, dance, DANCE in delight.
Every time I listen to it, it's so beautiful that I can't stop crying
How can it be so powerful? I love it!
