I just love this. Bob Dylans rendition on Self Portrait was pristine. Different versions of the same magical song. Thank you for sharing this. Love Fairport Convention.
Conversations with myself (not Bill Evans). I'm seeing now that Bob probably got it from Eric Von Schmidt, check out Eric's live version from Boston in 1960. Really good.
I saw Fairport Convention at a smallish club here in Columbus, Ohio in the early 80's. Sandy was sadly gone, but they did a great show. It sounds strange to say, but I was honored to be at a urinal between Richard Thompson and Dave Pegg during one of their breaks. . It was a small place, but packed to the walls with Fairport fans. A really good night!
Great to hear the the voice of Trevor here... and sad to know that in four years time poor Sandy would be gone and then in 1989 poor Trevor would be gone followed by Swarb in 2016.. Trevor and Sandy's daughter, Georgia, lives in Australia
Amazing really what you can do with a song I mean Dylan's and Fair port's are similar enough Anne Soldaat's is very different but I learnt it from Al O'Donnell an Irish folk singer again very similar still a very different song. Thanks for the fun. Paddy P;
I dint's regard Dylan's vocals on Self Portrait as 'raspy' - I'd say they're perfect for the song ! - and if it wasn't for him would you even know about the song?

But Bob added his raging "Dylanism" voice and Nashville studio musicians which took this traditional folk song to an entirely new level. FC, God love em have tried to copy it. And they've done a fairly good job. Although I would like to have heard Sandy Denny belt it out. I think she could have taken it to another level.
@@gostrum1 ok definitely a departure from English folk. Fp were , as you know, more USA influenced before Denny & swarb. So that is an important strand in fp and it's a good song and lineup

Have not heard Fairport Convention for many yrs. Thanks for reminding me, can now listen to them again ! Roy b, Cape Town, south africa 🇿🇦.
Absolutely love this song I've never heard before even if I am a very big long time fan of Fairport. Sounds wonderful

It is of its' time.. the Fairports were magical...
Sydney Opera House - wow - never knew that! Love this song
Dylan got this from an early Joan Baez Vanguard album, can only wonder where she got it. Great version, thanks so much for posting.
Sorry, my bad. It was Railroad Bill that Bob got from Joan. Both were on Self Portrait.

I was there, this brings back fond memories.
The Dylan version on Another Self Portrait.......the Bootleg series is fantastic also...

Poor old Jerry was also stricken a while back.
Great performance.
Great song!!! thanks for sharing!!!! my Friend!!!
I was in Sydney then and did not know about her......I do now !

Half gone. Good performance. I'd not heard this before.
Sounds great.
Given the lyrics, Dylans raspy voice on Self Portrait, really nails this song. Wouldn't want to diss Fair port though!

great voice Trev great band too
Lots of versions of this great song on UA-cam Check out one from a musician you maybe never heard of: Fred Holstein. The best imo.
Lovely! They are so god!

OK. Is it just me, or is it Dave Pegg's bass line that lifts this version up above "ordinary"?
It rolls 🌊
...and Jerry's brilliant guitar
Feel quite silly as Ive not heard this before.
There are 2.1 bazzillion songs out there. If you heard even a fraction of them without hearing this one, you're doing alright.
just people covering it using dylans name is all i can find
Not a Dylan song at all - written in the 1850s during the California Gold Rush. BTW, Dylan can't sing like Trevor Lucas.
anyone got a link to dylan version?

doesn't sound like fp, sounds like us country
Typical of the mid-70s sound when Jerry Donahue and Trevor Lucas were members. The "Live Convention" album gives a taste of that sound.
The subject matter is the San Francisco gold rush of 1849 so
It’s hardly going to sound like She moved through the fair

Once this was a good song, till some bastards had made a mockery of it.
Mother Theresa I'm waiting to hear your version.

I don't think this could sound any more 70s than it does. Haha. 👌
makes sense.
