  • The traditional changing of the guard of the Evzones is one of the most visited attractions of Athens. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Greek Parliament Building is guarded by the Evzones, the soldiers of the former royal bodyguard.

What an excellent video ! That amazing monument is more impressive when floodlit at night than it is in the daytime.

Thanks for your comment. I am glad you liked it. I agree that in the evening with illumination this monument looks even more majestic.

People ask why the goose stepping is done in slow motion, the reason is probably because its done in front of a memorial to the fallen dead. Normal goose stepping (like Riussian) is done to give the impression of power, this is the exact opposite, its to show respect to the fallen dead.

I think by doing this they show introduction and grief at the same time.

Impressive as usual.................I think this is winter costume. Very similar tio the Scottish kilt especially if you put a Tartan on it.

ναι μπράβο παιδιά! Πρέπει να είναι πολύ δύσκολο να περπατάς έτσι και μάλιστα με τέτοια παπούτσια.

On a historical note this costume reminds me of the clothes worn by the English King Henry Vlll. I'm sure there is no connection though since the fustanella (Kilt) was specifically used (like the Scotttish kilt) for mountain highland wear.

This is the first time I’ve seen such costumes, in my opinion it’s only in Greece, you can’t confuse it with any other countries.

Unusual shape and exciting ritual. I wonder why they raise their legs so high 🤔

Plus, they hit the boots on the ground as they walk, as a means of salute to the fallen, but also to communicate them that the Greek soil they've fallen to secure, is now free

Oh, forgot to add that the raising of the legs is symbolic: They were employed as elite assault infantry, so, they suffered and inflicted huge casualties during their head-on attacks, so they raise their legs to climb over the supposedly hillock of friendly and enemy corpses

For a European viewer, this ceremony in a traditional style looks a little unusual, I agree 😊

      They are THE PRESIDENTIAL GUARDS....
Each time they hit the ground with their " tsarouchia" they're sending a message to the fallen HEROES that they're not forgotten
Each part of their UNIFORM ux carefully hand made
The BLUE AND WHITE the national colours are throughout
The " foustanella " is 30 metres in length and has 400 pleats, representing the 400 years of TURKISH SLAVERY.....
SO A LITTLE RESPECT GOES A LONG WAY
