      I came here because of my pottery barn couch… $3000 and it looks terrible I’ve been struggling to reshape the down cushions for a while and this is exactly what I need to do. I bought a memory foam mattress pad and cut that up instead of the poly wrap and it was too much but would work great to keep the shape on the top. Hope it worked out for you, time to tackle mine once again :)

    Finally, some real help, easy instructions, Grant things I was thinking. Thankfully he took out his cell phone to record what they were actually doing, because I could NOT see it!!, just needed to show the last part of the stapling. Excellent, both Paul and Grant are easy to listen to and don't go on with nonsense.

    I would love a video on how to choose a sofa... what to look for in the construction, particularly the cushions. Second hand sofa's too. I go in blind and hope for the best. I slip covered a sofa based on your tutorials and it's holding up great! Thank you so much!

      This is an excellent idea!! I have spent so much money on furniture that didn’t hold up. I do however think that if you get a very firm sitting couch/loveseat that it holds its shape soo much longer. One couch I have now has a very firm sit to it and we’ve had it for 12 years. It is just now starting to give a bit. Also if you can get furniture that has removable bottom and back cushions it makes it so much easier to re stuff.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 роки тому

      Hi Michele, thanks, we'll keep that in mind for the future! And you are right with 18 density foam the firmer the cushion the longer it tends to last, however if you get a higher density foam like 26 density it doesn't make as much of a difference how firm it is.

    Great to see Grant continuing the family business. What to do if cushion is attached to sofa? If I use my seam ripper to carefully remove the cushion, will it have a back? I don't know what the constructon is behind the sewn on cushion.

    It’s midnight and I’m in self isolation due to a COVID exposure but my old pillow I was going to toss is now inside the back of my couch and my decrepit back pain is already getting better. Super informative and helpful! I’m just shoving poly fill from old pillows I was going to get rid of into my couch. They don’t detach and just have a bunch of fill, nothing else, so it explains why sagging began 6 months after purchasing this $800 (!!!) couch. Super easy to follow for DIY failures like myself. Thanks!!

Hey if you have any questions let us know, we will be glad to help. You can hand sew the insert cover closed or even the poly batting as well, you do NOT need to use a stapler. A quick word of advice with back cushions you can easily over stuff them to the point you will need to remove some of the poly for better comfort. Again thank you, please share and subscribe if you haven't already, it helps us a lot. Cheers, Paul

    I like that type of stapler because it allows me to staple through thick materials or thick paper yard bags. But it is surprisingly hard to find mainly because either the stores don't carry it or they seem to stock the shelves with this type of stapler away from all the other staplers.
    The trick is in the name of the stapler. Ask for or search for a Plier Type Stapler. It is sometimes called a Dog Stapler I guess because it looks like a dog mouth.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching our videos! Great question, unfortunately, there isn’t a place where you can buy premade inserts. However, you can mimic a channeled insert by using Dacron. Similarly to how we wrapped each section with dacron before adding it into the insert, you can do the same without an insert. All you need to do is make two sections an upper section and a lower section and wrap the poly fill completely with Dacron to almost make a roll. Once when the roll is made add one more layer of Dacron around the entire inside of your cushion cover then place each polyfill rolls in their respective places. Hope this helps!

      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 роки тому

      Hey boricua3205, Thanks for sending the photos they help out a lot! One thing you could do is take out each individual section of polyfill (since it used to be channeled) and wrap the polyfill (like a sausage link) with Dacron. This will keep the polyfill from falling to the bottom of the cushion and fill out your cushion at the same time. I hope this helps!

    Hi guys! Love the video! What do you recommend I do, if I don’t have a cover. My couch cushion once unzipped just has the poly fill everywhere so it tends to get lumpy and loose the shape.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 роки тому

      Hey, thanks so much for checking out our video! Glad to hear you love it! That’s a great question, what we would do is take a Dacron wrap and make a liner for the cover, by folding it inside the cover so that the opening is at the bottom. Then fill the Dacron wrap with poly fill or shredded foam. This will break lumpiness and provide a makeshift insert for your cover.

At that time when we did the video you saw, that was the best thing that we had to offer to add support to back cushions. So again yes you could do that for a bed pillow. But since then we’ve come out with double shredded foam. That would definitely give you more support for bed pillow in fact we’re looking into making some and see how they work. I hope this helps, there’s live chat at this website if you have any questions. Feel free to get on live chat and then give me your phone number and we can talk. Ucprivatecourses.com. Cheers, Paul

    I have this exact problem with an expensive couch that was a hand-me-down. The inside is a mixture of feathers and batting pieces. I wasn’t sure if I should just stuff more batting inside, because I don’t want to deal with the feathers. They have moved all over my house!
    The inside cover that’s stuffed, has three chambers. I think I’ll just mix more batting in with the other mixture and then put a batting cover around the entire thing like you did. I never thought of that! Perfect! Even I can do that! Thank you!
    PS... I’m not sure if you took the staples out when you sewed the batting at the machine. Can anyone tell me? Thanks. I’ll watch again. I’m sick of looking at half a couch!

      Hello Kathryn, thanks for watching the video. It’s difficult to know which route to take when it comes to the poly fill in the feather. Of course you could just add more but the problem with polyfill and feather is they don’t give much support. Wrapping the outside with the poly batting does help some in the appearance but again it won’t give you much support. Since we put together that video we have come up with double shredded foam. Or you could use chop foam. I find that the double shred it is superior to chop foam because it’s not as lumpy. You can check it out at ucprivatecourses.com. Plus you long lasting support like foam and it’s easy to work with. I hope this helps you thank you for watching the video. Cheers, Paul

    1 question though: How do I go about making an insert like you have here? My back cushions don't have anything like this, they're just stuffed with fiber fill and look quite shabby. I added more fill but that just made the backs look worse. Do I use the cushion as a pattern? Any further advice is appreciated :)

    I’m planning to do this, but the insert has three chambers running horizontally. It’s full of feathers and stuffing. My dog sits on the back of either the couch or the chairs, which have the same issue now,. But, for the couch, should I empty out the three chambers and just put in foam? I could also cut the chambers out, and put foam and Dacron in the insert. I’m scared to fill up the chambers because the dang feathers go everywhere! OR, should I go with the double shredded foam and fill the insert further with that keeping the feathers and fuzz inside?
    I had a thought, because I have Dacron at home, but probably not enough, because I’m making cushions for some benches. I also have two duvets. I was wondering if I could cut up the duvets and completely cover the inserts that are in there now, stapling each seam so it looks tailored.
    I know I’m asking a lot of questions, but I really need to save money right now, since I found out a couple days ago that my grown son has 2 kinds of bartonella and Babesia. These are insect biting infections that lie dormant, and since he was living with his father, who let his house go, and it’s full of mold, it lowered his resistance, and the infections took over his central nervous system leaving him neurologically and psychologically impaired. There are other past brain traumas, so it may be permanent, and I’m going to have to save my money for his treatment, since it’s functional medicine. I realize this may not be something you are aware if, but I couldn’t think of another way of saying this. Thanks for being my sounding board! 💕🙏

      This is the question that I came on here to ask. I think you just do the same thing but only if your back cushions have a zipper on the bottom and you can take it out that way. If not you could always take the bottom seam apart and take it out, do what they suggested and put it back in. There are special needles for upholstery that are curved to make sewing it closed much easier. That’s what I’m thinking I’ll do.

    You guys do a great job together with these tutorials! Now I know exactly what to do to update my La-Z-Boy sleeper sofa! It has two large back cushions just like the ones in this video. The problem is, that I attempted a fix that didn't work, and I removed my insert covers and discarded them. They had a top channel that extended into the half-tee and a lower channel for the bottom half of the cushion. I didn't realize that I just needed to add more polly fill! I think I can make new insert covers by using the outer fabric cushion cover as a guide. They were made of a thin fabric....what is that called? Also, I don't remember if each channel chamber had dacron batting around the fill, but do you think I should use it in the new ones? I would really appreciate your help.

    I gather y’all are father and son. Very nice, and good job. Any thoughts on what I might do if I had a cushion on a convertible that is not really sagging yet, but that I wanted to sort of “overstuff” to make a little cushy-er?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 роки тому

      Hi Jon,
      You gather correct, thank you! Do you know what the fill is currently? If it is polyfill you could add more, however that tend to make it firmer not cushy-er. Another option is to change the fill to shredded poly foam, 18 density 20 compression, which should provide a more cushy feel. This a recommendation, though, based on your circumstances it may not work.
      I hope this helps, if it does please tell a friend it really does help us when you share! All the Best, Grant

      Hello there. First THANK YOU for your encouragement and comment. This a problem so many people have. The best is solid foam is the best support the shape comes right back. We have a video on changing the back cushion to foam PLEASE look for that one I am sorry If I look for it now I will erase all writing now. The second best is replace the feathers which give no real support with shredded foam we have a video on that as well. Very easy to do. That will still sag some but is MUCH Better than feathers. Shredded foam your cushions DO NOT need to be boxed. I thank so much for watching the videos. PLEASE share the videos it with others it helps so much. God love you for it. Paul. Thanks for watching! You can Google Upholstery or Upholsterers; and an upholsterer near you should be able to help.
      However unfortunately there is not an over abundance of the upholsterers left so they maybe a few and far between. I hope this helps! All the Best, Grant

    I’m curious about the stapling. Aren’t you concerned that someone will get poked or scratches by them if they come through the fabric?

      Hello Julie thanks for watching the video. I’ve had other people ask a similar question and I’ve never heard of it ever causing any problems. It’s a very old practice I think from the 1960s. But if you feel more comfortable with glue that’s definitely an excellent option. Thanks again. Cheers, Paul

    I've taken my cushion out of the fabric cover, and the insert cover is just shredded. I can make a new insert cover, I think, but what would be the best way to do that and with what material?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 роки тому +1

      Hello Jill, Thank you for watching our video. YES! You can make another insert and you can use the cushion cover as the template because your insert is torn and shredded. A good fabric to use is a light weight cotton or a blended one,even old bed sheets will work very well. I don't know if you saw this video, but we now offer double shredded foam which is better than poly-fill. Here is that video you might like it better. videoua-cam.com/video/5037r0_sajQ/v-deo.html Thank you again and please share the videos it does help. Cheers, Paul

    My couch pillows have feathers.... any videos on that ?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 роки тому

      Hey there, no we don’t have a video on feathers. But if you’re looking just to make them fuller the only thing you need to do is open up the side. And add more feathers to your existing feathers and then sew it back up definitely do this outside as it’s a complete mess. I’m not sure if you’re wanting to add more or are you wanting to replace them? Hope this helps. Cheers, Paul

    Hi. My insert covers totally disintegrated. If i wrap and staple my existing filling with batting(as you have done).... is it ok to put this batting wrapped insert directly into the cushion cover without it having an insert cover? Thankyou in advance :)

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Chris, excellent question! Yes, you can wrap your insert with just the batting in replace of an insert cover. However, I wouldn't try to remove the insert pieces, if there is any, just to help keep its form. I hope this helps!
      Also, if you haven't already, subscribing really helps! We are coming out with a new series that we don't want you to miss! Thanks, Grant

    Can someone tell me what the "fabric" is that holds the cushion filling together at 4:50 ? My back cushion insert cover has completely disintegrated (feels like paper towel) and I want to sew a new one so I can put it back into the couch cushion cover. I don't think it's dacron (which seems to be similar to batting?) it really looks like interfacing or something.

      Hello Karoline, Yes, that is problem sometimes the insert material disintegrating. You can use any light weight cotton fabric, in fact that is better then what you have now. However if you want replace it with what you have the name is called punch cloth or some call it white ace cloth. Hey if you want to replace the poly fill with shredded foam we now have it and is much better then poly fill. Go to ucprivatecourses.com Again thank you for watching. Cheers, Paul

    Sofas begin at $800. And thats for the cheapest place you can find. For a decent name brand but now no good but high end sofas run around 3 grand. A new stove with cooktop a new stove costs $3000 up to $7000. I live in california. To order a delivery of 3 chicken salads and rice cost us $58.00. Save your old everything including your vehicles and faucets ...

    Back cushion is sewn to sofa and feels like sitting in a recliner that is adjusted back about 15 to 20 degrees. Very "slouchy" and uncomfortable.
    Is there any way to make 4 new back cushions to rest against the existing ones? Or just 3 back cushions since there are only 3 sitting cushions?
    Really need advice and help.
    Thanks so much!

      Hi Linda,
      Thanks again for watching our videos and I didn't comment on this earlier however thank you for your very kind compliments in your previous comment. The easiest thing to do is make large throw pillows for the sofa say 25" sq. or if you would like you could make boxed back cushions, however that does take a little more work.
      Let me know if you have any questions on how to get started.
      All the Best,
      Grant

    is there any reason why I shouldn't use foam instead of poly fill? I was thinking about using upholstery foam wrapped in poly batting to make it crown. Our back cushions have a double seam similar to seat cushions and I figured using foam instead of fill would make it so it doesn't collapse as badly.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  5 років тому

      Hello Trevor,
      Great question, foam will always give more support over polyfill as well as last significantly longer. The foam will keep its shape and possibly be more comfortable. What you described sounds like you have what's called a boxed cushion. However, some back cushions can be very bulky, rounded or thick and filling that style with all foam could be a challenge (the backs were designed for polyfill). Back cushion with a band thickness of 3 to 5" should be fine to use foam inserts. So when you can use foam I believe is the best route to take. I hope this has helped you with your project. Please share the videos with others it helps us a lot when you do. All the best, Paul

    Could I easily make those same cushions more stable using a foam backing with batting or the padding around them? My cushions are worse than that and `I want a more supportive back.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  6 років тому

      Hi Jennifer,
      Great question! You can use foam in back cushions, decades ago removable back cushions were made from foam. However they were BOXED, most today are what we call knife edge (one flat seam or welt at top) IF that is your case and I believe it is, foam will not work will in that style of cushion. YOU can consider shredded foam easy to find on the net, make a shell out of poly batting that fits inside the fabric cover. Fill the poly cover with shredded foam that will give you more support. Jennifer I hope this has helped let me know if you have another question. Please share the videos it helps us when you do. All the best, Paul

    If it takes two of you do you think I can do this myself to a seat cushion?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  5 років тому

      Hello Mary, thanks for leaving the comment. It was just my son and me demonstrating how someone can do this themselves. It doesn’t take two, you could easily do this. However you said seat cushion, seat cushions would rarely have poly fill as an insert. They would have poly foam. here’s a place you can buy poly foam if you need it. ucprivatecourses.com. Thank you again please subscribe and share if you haven’t already. Cheers, Paul
